The Mission of St. David's is to follow Jesus, loving our neighbors as ourselves, without exception.

March 2016Reflection from Father Samuel...

Dear St. David's, This month of March will take us through the end of Lent, Holy Week, Easter Day andthe beginning of Eastertide. Hold on, it usually is a spiritual and sometimes physicalarduous journey. This is such a holy time for us as Christians. We continue ourwilderness journey with Jesus, being faced by obstacles to the real call of the gospel, which is not the easy path to take. We enter with joy into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday proclaiming the new reign to come -"Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord". We know our shouts of joyare shrouded by a tense uneasiness to words Jesus proclaims as he arrives inJerusalem. Then comes Thursday of that week, the day we call "Maundy Thursday". Maundycoming from the Latin word - command. Jesus breaks bread and shares the cup ofwine and tells us to do this always in remembrance of him. Then he goes further. Hewashes the feet of his disciples and shows us the way to be great in God's kingdom isto have humility and serve others.

Friday... Good Friday? On this day we go with Jesus through his betrayal, suffering, and execution on the Cross, as the religious and civil authorities could not bear thethreat to their perceived power in this world. Jesus is about turning the rules andways of the world upside down. It is just too much for some to bear, and still is. Nowwe wait in the silence of mourning what the world does when God sends his own Sonto bring good news to all people. We are a stiff necked people. Holy Saturday is a strange time for us. We mourn, but have faith knowing that God isabout to change all that pain and suffering into something that will change the worldforever and bring life to all the world. As the sun goes down, we gather and light thenew fire of new life at the Easter Vigil. We hear the story of Salvation through all timefrom the Scriptures and this leads us to know that God has the last word, and new lifecomes and the tomb cannot hold the Light of the world from springing forth in glory. Then the day arrives that everyone looks forward to - Easter Day, the Day of theResurrection! What a joy. Christ is Risen! Just as he said, he would not leave usever. The world has now changed forever. "For God so loved the world thateveryone that believes in him would not perish but have everlasting life." We beginanother journey of understanding what the Resurrection of Jesus is. Over a time offifty days, we walk with Jesus as he encounters his disciples in so many differentways, always telling them "Do not fear". He prepares them and us to what must come -the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. If you have noticed, we the church, still have much to do. But thanks be to God through our Lord Jesus Christ who hasstrengthened us to be stewards of the love of God. One note. Unless a Christian has a work or physical limitation, each and every one ofus should be at the three holy services of the Holy Triduum: Maundy Thursday, GoodFriday and Easter Day. How can you really expect to understand the Resurrectionunless you have washed feet with him, broke bread with him, experience betrayal withhim, walked and carried a cruel cross and face the shout of all the world: "crucifyhim!" It is then that when Easter comes we are changed and our joy is complete. Don't cheat yourself out of what can change your life forever. Be here and take the fulljourney; you may just be surprised what may happen in your life. On a separate note. If you are wanting to reach me. Unless when I am on vacation oron my day off, which in Monday. I am in the church office Tuesday through Friday, unless I am at an appointment or church obligation that takes me out of the office. Always feel free to call the church office to ask for me. If for some reason I cannotanswer the phone due to being in an appointment with someone or away from theoffice, please, leave a message on my church voicemail with your name, phone

The Music of Holy Week

Palm Sunday through Easter Day is a very special time period where emotions are in a 180 turnaround and then back again to the triumph of Easter Day. We begin, of course, on Palm Sundaywith the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem as we sing, "Fanfare for Palm Sunday" by

Page 5: March 2016saintdavidschurch.com/.../0/9/34098999/_march__2016... · 2016 + St. David's Holy Week & Easter Palm Sunday, March 20th 8:00 a.m. Holy Communion Rite I 10:30 a.m. Holy Communion

Katherine K. Davis. This, as we know, doesn't last very long and we come then to the Triduum orthe three "great" days before the resurrection. On Maundy Thursday we sing of Jesus in the gardenof Gethsemane in "He Prays Alone" by Philip Liebergen. Good Friday reminds us of the lonelinessof the cross as we hear, "O vos omnes" (or, O all ye who pass by this way) as will be sung by ourguest soloist, Patricia McAfee, mezzo soprano. Saturday brings us the Great Vigil of Easter whenwe begin in darkness, only to reveal the glory of Easter Day. The lessons are from the old and newtestaments and recount the events from the creation to the triumph over death. We sing, "ThisJoyful Easter Day" and relish in the beginning of new life for the next two days of services. EasterDay will be filled with the great hymns of the season and will feature the anthem, "Now, O Death,Where Is Thy Sting" by Russell Nagy. If you have never experienced the three days before EasterDay, I encourage you to do so, as they really are important on the continuation and conclusion ofour journey through Lent. We will travel the road from Jerusalem, to the Cross, the grave and thento the victory! Join us for this week of great and inspiring music, both from our choir and in thehymns that we all sing together.

Christian Formation....

Holy Week OverviewA procession of palms is often held in churches on Palm Sunday to commemorate Jesus' triumphalentry into Jerusalem. Later, the palm fronds may be made into simple crosses by the children. Thisvisual transformation of the palms, from a banner of joy to a symbol of torture, portrays the drama ofHoly Week. During Holy Week, families and individuals might read the scriptures appointed for each day or, ifthere are young children, read the events of Holy Week from a Bible storybook. On Holy Thursday (also called Maundy Thursday in some traditions), the Church celebrates theinstitution of the Lord's Supper. The word Maundy stems from the Latin word mandatum, meaning"commandment," and refers to the new commandment of love that Jesus gave his disciples thatnight. Some parishes observe the custom of foot-washing, recalling how Jesus washed hisdisciples' feet at the Last Supper (John 13:1-20). After the liturgy, the eucharist is kept in thetabernacle of repose. Then the altar is stripped.

On Good Friday the altar is bare, and the liturgy includes intercessions, veneration of the cross, and a communion service using the reserved sacraments. Many churches, in addition to the Liturgyof Good Friday, have a meditation on the Way of the Cross (the Stations of the Cross),commemorating the events of the passion of Jesus. Some parishes have also profited from GoodFriday meditations on the seven last words of Christ on the cross.

During the Great Vigil of Holy Saturday, the Church keeps watch, awaiting the resurrection ofChrist and celebrating it in word and sacrament. The Easter Vigil is also the ancient time forbaptisms-we die to our old life, as Jesus died, and are raised to a new life as a child of God, asJesus rose on Easter morning. Many parishes have resumed the ancient liturgy incorporatingbaptism, confirmation and eucharist as the culmination of the catechumenate or initiation process.

"The scriptures and the power of God come rushing together in the person of God's Messiah, only togo tumbling with him, down, down into the dark, bottomless pit of sorrow and shame. And only

when we have stood aghast for three days on the edge of that pit will we be in any fit condition tospeak once more of the wedding banquet, of the lavish welcome, of the new Temple, of robes of

true holiness, and of hope. Only when we have pondered what it cost the king to prepare thewedding banquet of his son dare we once more call God father and pray for the coming of his

kingdom." --Bishop Thomas Wright The Scriptures, the Cross, and the Power of God

Keeping Holy Week

Holy WeekThe Church gives to its people the period of Holy Week as a solemn time to reflect onthe suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ and to prepare for the celebration ofhis resurrection from the dead. Many of the liturgical celebrations of Holy Weekreflect the liturgical customs of the Church in Jerusalem in the fourth and fifth centuries. These liturgies were intended to help the people of the city spend a more intense time of walkingwith the Lord. The various sites associated with the last week of our Lord's life became focal pointsfor the devotions of the faithful. The word holy means "set apart," especially for the worship of God.There are many ways in which we can set this week apart to worship God-by reading the scripturesappointed for the days of Holy Week at home with our families and friends and by participating inthe liturgies that recall the events of this week. During the year we are given opportunities to slowdown our activities and to enter more fully into the drama of redemption. Holy Week is theopportunity during the church year to live out the mystery of salvation. Full participation in HolyWeek will go far in preparing us to join in the alleluias of the Easter Feast, giving us a deeper senseof the riches of salvation in Christ Jesus. Maundy ThursdayMany customs have marked the Thursday of Holy Week over the centuries. Originallyno Holy Communion was celebrated during the week before Easter, but by the end of thefourth century some areas were holding a celebration on Thursday and the custom spread underthe name Cena Domini (the Supper of the Lord). It recalls Jesus' last supper with his disciples.During the middle ages Christians rang bells throughout the Thursday service, then silenced allbells till Easter. The Reconciliation of Penitents was another rite associated with Maundy Thursday. The word Maundy, which comes from the Latin mandatum (commandment), refers to Jesus'commandment to "love one another...as I have loved you" (John 13:34). Foot washing, according toJesus' example (John 13:2-15), came to symbolize this love and service. During the middle ages, kings and lords washed the feet of the twelve poorest men in their kingdoms. In England, thecustom was for kings and queens to wash the feet of as many poor people as they were years old.Records show that in 1560 Queen Elizabeth "kept her maundy" by washing the feet of twenty poorwomen in the great hall at Westminster. Our present service commemorates the institution of theeucharist and restores the ceremony of footwashing as an option. These themes of Jesus servingbread and wine to his friends and washing their feet point us to our own serving ministries in theChurch and in the world.

Joan says her book is not meant to teach ushow to pray, but rather it concerns what we should bring to our practice of prayer "inorder to make prayer an authentic and real, a deep and profound part of our lives...[Prayer] is the beginning of a relationship with a God who is closer to us than we are toourselves...It grows us into the fullness of ourselves, both spiritually andpsychologically." We will touch on topics such as Humility, Authenticity, Presence, andGratitude in our prayer lives. Our seminarian, Nancy Holland, will help facilitate ourdiscussion. The Mary MagdaleneChapter

On February 1st we had our monthly gathering. This included a discussion of the book we arestudying, Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. Wediscussed the first five chapters. We found much that was inspiring, including the idea that we arecalled to live out God's dream. Bishop Curry points out that a deepened relation with Jesustransforms us so we live differently as the community of Jesus. We also had devotions, includingthe following prayer by the Rev. Susan Gregg-Schroeder: Another important event coming upis the Lenten Quiet Day which is being hosted by the Daughters of the King at St.David's on Saturday, March 12th from 9-1:30. We will have a gifted author andspeaker, Lynn Neu, as our retreat leader on the topic of "Spiritual Practicesfor the 21st Century." All the women in the diocese are invited to attend. Divine Spirit, you have bestowed upon each of us such a variety of gifts. Your manyblessings and your goodness fill us with gratitude and joy. And yet we sometimes...hold backfrom sharing from our abundance, out of fear, doubt, envy or mistrust. At other times ...weclose ourselves off to the possibilities of new life that you continually make available to us. Itis your living water that strengthens us in our times of hardship. It is your life-giving presencethat enlivens us when our joy has run dry like wine that has been consumed by too manydemands on our lives.

During the 10:30 service on February 7th we had acandlelight ceremony marking the beginning of thenew member training for four prospective new members:Karen Benedict, Shirley Culver, Ruth Ann Woolery, andRoseann Myers. Our next gathering will be on Monday, March 7th at5:45 p.m. We will begin our gathering in thesanctuary with a special version of the Stations ofthe Cross that we do every year in Lent. Then we will adjourn to the Mission Center

Monthly Models of FaithPatrick of Ireland ~ Remembered on March 17

Somewhere on the northwest coast of Britain in about 390, one of the more popular saints of theChurch was born into a Christian family-- St. Patrick. His grandfather was a priest and his father adeacon, as well as an official of the Roman government of Britain. Slave-traders abducted Patrickand a large number of his father's slaves when Patrick was 16-years-old, taking them to Ireland. There he lived and suffered from hunger and cold for six difficult years, working as a shepherd. He eventually escaped and returned to Britain.Patrick was educated in Britain and France, and then entered the priesthood, later becoming abishop.

Page 12: March 2016saintdavidschurch.com/.../0/9/34098999/_march__2016... · 2016 + St. David's Holy Week & Easter Palm Sunday, March 20th 8:00 a.m. Holy Communion Rite I 10:30 a.m. Holy Communion

Because of a dream in which "all the children of Ireland from their mother's wombs were stretchingout their hands" to him, he announced, to the surprise of family and friends, that he wanted to goback to Ireland as a missionary. Patrick landed in Ireland very near the place he was held captive, now known as Downpatrick. Though not the first, Patrick became the most successful missionary toIreland. He dealt with local kings and through them reached their people. Patrick'sautobiography, Confessio, describes his encounters with fierce kings and proud druids. HeChristianized primitive religions as he traveled through thecountry.

Patrick also states in his autobiography that he was often criticized for his lack of learning--a factthat if true is far outweighed by his spirituality and devotion. He exhibits a profound commitment tothe Trinity (an explanation for the shamrock being one of his symbols): "I bind unto myself today thestrong Name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three."

Saints and Seasons We Episcopalians tend to stress the Incarnation, the birthand life of Jesus, rather his death.

The story (or rather stories) of his birth, the accounts of his teachingand ministry, the miracles of healing and restoration, all tell us whoJesus is. The Venerable Bede reminds us that Jesus most oftenreferred to himself as 'Son of Man,' "what he became for yoursake..." rather than 'Son of God,' "what he was for our exaltation." Like my mother, I am a collector of phrases. I find that thewords used can open up something that I have read many timesand make me think OH YEA! So it was when I read the words of John of the Cross: [It was in his Passion] "that Christfinished that supreme work which his whole life, its miracles and works of power, had notaccomplished: the union and reconciliation of human nature with the life of God." Not even the branches of Christ's life, the "miracles and works of power" weresufficient, because it is nothing less than our human nature, our very essence, which is to be

Page 13: March 2016saintdavidschurch.com/.../0/9/34098999/_march__2016... · 2016 + St. David's Holy Week & Easter Palm Sunday, March 20th 8:00 a.m. Holy Communion Rite I 10:30 a.m. Holy Communion

reconciled and united not just with God but with God's very life. Oh, individuals too: men andwomen, Peter and all the guys. Thomas too, and all the Marys. And Martha, don't forget Martha! Andtheir brother Lazarus whom Jesus had raised from the dead. And you and me. We are all united andreconciled with God and live with Him here and hereafter. But first of all, and most of all, it is human nature that is dealt with, changed. It goes to theheart, deep down where the roots live and thrive and take nourishment from the soil... It's waybeyond what we can do-what we do and don't do, what we take on or give up for Lent. what we dodo do do. So often all the do dos do is to focus our attention on us. And that is the trouble. It's not myactions and inaction that are the problem-they are the result. The problem is at the core of me,my heart, my nature. And only Christ's passion, death and resurrection could accomplish that. Evenhis own doing couldn't do it. Only after He had done all He could do, had come to the end ofdoing, and had surrendered himself into the hands of his Abba, and died, could the Father's realwork be accomplished. And so with us. "If the root is holy, then the branches are holy," Paul says. Only when at longlast we declare ourselves powerless to prevail, and give ourselves into the Father's hands, can werise with him to newness of life. And so once again I am willing to give myself up to the death which is Holy Week, and ratherthan teetering on the edge and hating it, instead, to freefall into it, knowing that "As in Adam all die,so also in Christ shall all be made alive." Allele..... Ooops. There I go getting ahead of myself again.

We are in the season of Lent, preparing for the holist season of the Church Year - Easter. This is the time we set aside to examine ourselves to see how well we are living our Baptismalpromises (see Book of Common Prayer, pp. 302-5). We are focusing on our Lenten disciplines, learning self-examination and fasting or "giving up" to remind us of what Jesus gave up to save us. Both classes, Godly Play and All Things New, continue with the sacred stories of Jesus' life andministry. During Lent the children, each class individually, will take a "Walk with Jesus" - "Stationsof the Cross". Both classes will be learning about a "Rule of Life" - Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgivingwith the All Things New class receiving their Rule of Life booklets. The children are filling their"Mite Boxes" for Episcopal Relief and Development as another outreach project. Dates to remember:

Jr. Daughters of the King

On February 7th the girls had a busy time doing service projects.First they baked dozens of cookies for Kairos prison ministry. Then they made dozens of Valentines--for the Seniors in the GrayBrigade, for the preschoolers, and for some of the parishionerswho have not been able to come to church. Many thanks to Annaand Evie for all their hard work and thanks to Leslie and Anne

Kellett for their help. The girls also had devotions, including the following Jr. Daughters' Prayer: God of love, God of life, God of holy strength, guide us that by our daily practice ofPrayer and Service, we may draw others to Christ. Help us to reach up in hope, receive in spirit, respond in faith, and reach out in love for all. We pray that yourkingdom will come for all creation, all people living together in love and peace. Amen The next Jr. DOK gathering will be after church on Sunday, March 13th. All girls in theparish are invited to come to our gatherings and they are also welcome to bring afriend. Please contact me to RSVP or for information. Blessings, Janet Shaw, [email protected]

These are optimumconditions in which to grow. I like to think that our preschool and church provide that deep
