MARCH 18, 2018 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

A VIEW FROM THE PEW

For the Month of March, 2018 Month of Saint Joseph

That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the

personal and communitarian levels.

Holy Father’s Intention Today’s Sunday Readings

First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 Second Reading: Hebrews 5:7-9

Gospel: John 12:20-33

Fifth Sunday of Lent Previously called "Passion Sunday", this Sunday marks the beginning of Passiontide, a deeper time of Lent. This is the third Sunday of the scrutinies for the preparation of adult converts, and the final Sunday of Lent before the beginning of Holy Week. The Liturgy of the Word of this day speaks of re-creation, resurrection, and new life.

Lenten Reflection “Lent is like a long “retreat” during which we can turn back into ourselves and listen to the voice of God, in order to defeat the temptations of the Evil One. It is a period of spiritual ‘combat’ which we must experience alongside Jesus, not with pride and presumption, but using the arms of faith: prayer, listening to the word of God and penance. In this way, we will be able to celebrate Easter in truth, ready to renew the promises of our Baptism.”

— Pope Benedict XVI

We Invite All to Participate in our Holy Week Services!!

Holy Week is most definitely a very sacred time of the year, for it is now that we will commemorate and remember the last week of Jesus’ life on this earth. These are the days leading up to the great Easter Feast. The Lenten season of sacrifice and self-denial is about to come to an end, but this coming week is extremely important for all Christians. The greatest focus of the week is the Passion (suffering) and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the events that led up to it. March 24/25 - Palm Sunday - Regular Mass Times March 30 - Good Friday: No Masses March 29 - Holy Thursday: Meditative Stations: 2:00 pm Soup Supper: 6:00 pm Passion of the Lord: 3:00 pm Mass: 7:30 pm Blessed Sacrament Reposing: 8:30 pm March 31 - Easter Vigil: Mass: 8:00 pm (Note: Easter Sunday Masses: 6:30 am, 8:15 am, 10:15 am, 11:45 am — NO 5:30 pm Mass) Attention All Soup Chefs: Kindly drop off your favorite soup and bread creations to share at our Holy Thursday Lenten Soup Supper at 5:30 pm in the Cafeteria. For questions, please call Maria Adversalo at 426-0023. As always, thank you ever so much for your contribution and your support.

What a turnout by the MSOS youth at last Friday’s Stations of the Cross! Congratulations, Youth! Well done, God’s good and faithful servants!

Lenten Reflection On Spring

An inexhaustible source of human unhappiness is the tendency to recall and relive painful past events. In no time at all you can find yourself digging up regrettable past events, painful mem-ories and long-held resentments. Fortunately, Spring (March 20th is the first day of Spring 2018) reminds us that God is forever looking forward. Bulbs are ready to burst forth. New blades of grass emerge. Buds appear on tree branches. All of creation moves forward. Shouldn’t we as well? “The things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind.”

Lenten Recollection

Tuesday, March 20, 2018

As part of our Lenten journey, please join us for an evening of Recollection on Tuesday, March 20th, 6:30 pm in the Church. Feel free to bring your family and friends. It is such an honor and privilege to welcome, as our esteemed keynote

speaker, the Very Reverend Monsignor Gary Se-cor, Vicar General/Moderator of the Curia and Pastor, Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. Since most of us find that we often wander from God’s path, Lent becomes that second chance to “return to God with our whole heart.” Let’s journey together through this annual second chance by attending what promises to be an evening to remember. ___________________________________________

As we prepare ourselves to enter Holy Week next week, let’s reflect back on our Lenten journey thus far. Lent focuses on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Honestly ask yourself how you have done thus far and think about how you can continue your Lenten journey for the next few weeks. 1. Ask yourself what you need to refocus or focus on. (i.e. more prayer, fasting, or almsgiving)

a. If you need more prayer time, consider following the gospel readings this week at home, or attend Stations of the Cross on Friday. b. If you need to focus on your fast, pray for the discipline and self-control to hold your fast or restart your fast for the remainder of Lent. c. If you would like to serve others more, take advantage of opportunities to help at home, school, or our parish. (i.e. chores, volunteering/serving community)
