Fr. Ken’s Corner

Dear Sisters and Brothers of St. Rose of Lima,

I have the memory as a child – though that seems like a million years ago – of my mom saying, “Come on, move yourself and get ready. We’re going to church.” It was a very simple and direct statement, and yet something I misinterpreted. I think that many people today also misunderstand those four words, “We’re going to church.” In my mind as an eight- or nine-year old, my understanding was that we were going to THE church. The church, St. Hugh of Lincoln, was a building, a place where we attended mass, a place to pray. That one little word – THE - that I added in my mind made a big difference.

Now you may ask, “What is the difference?” And here’s the answer. Church is a living, growing, active and loving body – people of faith coming together. THE church – to me – was just a building, a place where people came together because it was big. The building was built in a certain way to hold lots of people. The difference is that when the edifice is empty, the church is just a building. To be sure, it is a special building, a holy place, a significant building because it holds the Blessed Sacrament. Yet “the church” becomes CHURCH when the People of God gather. That’s a title which has been emphasized since the Second Vatican Council. We are the church – you and I – and the many people of faith throughout Long Island in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and in dioceses all over the world. You and I and over 7,000 families form the local church or parish of St. Rose of Lima. This church is not just the brick and slate and stained-glass windows that have stood for almost 70 years. Our church is the many families who gather each week to form what is known as the Mystical Body of Christ.

Yes, we celebrate the Body of Christ – The Holy Eucharist – sacramentally. But we are that Mystical Body because today we are Christ’s hands, we are Christ’s feet, we are Christ’s compassion and mercy in the world today. The church – you and me in union with the bishops and the Holy Father – is Christ’s visible presence today. We don’t just ‘come to church.’ When we gather together - we become church. That’s what I confused as a young boy – we gather together to be in a visible way what was born on Pentecost. We recall Jesus saying to the first pope “You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church.” Jesus builds his church with Living Stones – living stones of faith – and from St. Peter all the way down to this present day, we know that while it is possible to destroy a building, Christ’s church still remains. The second part of that passage of Jesus speaking to Peter is just as important as the first half – “…And the gates of the underworld (Hell) can never hold out against it.”

Until recently, in past months, we, as church, haven’t been able to gather together as these living stones of faith. We’ve been dispersed – isolated. We’ve been able to use social media to share the message of the gospel, yet as a good number of people have told me, sitting at home and watching the mass on television isn’t nearly the same as coming together on Saturday night or Sunday. And transmitting those celebrations while in an empty building isn’t the same as having the parishioners of St. Rose of Lima come together in living prayer. These last few weeks when we have been able to come together in prayer and worship have strengthened our family of faith. Our coming together as this family also reminds us of the many people – particularly the elderly and infirm – who, being conscious of their own health, haven’t been able to join us yet. Although we aren’t able to resume at full capacity yet, I invite our parishioners to come back to the table of the Lord to be strengthened and nourished and healed.

Because of the separation we experienced through the coronavirus, there can be a natural feeling of discouragement. For some, there can be the feeling that they like sitting on a soft comfortable couch. But as church – both in ministry and in worship – we can never be merely observers, but active participants. That’s why gathering together is so important; to share the strength, the vitality, the wonder of our faith that isn’t possible when we’re alone. Yes, God is everywhere. God is in all creation and at the same time, Jesus reminds us that when two or three are gathered together in his name, he is present. He is present as the Head of His Mystical body; He is present with his people as church.

As we continue into this long-awaited summer, naturally we should be conscious of those gatherings that may present a concern about the transmission of the coronavirus. As has been said, we’re not out of the woods yet. At the same time, let us long to GO to church, and through the celebration of the Eucharist, let us long to BE Christ’s church more visibly, more charitably, more perfectly.

Help us Support A Place to Call Home

Charles spent 17 years deployed at military bases throughout the world. Returning home after an incident involving nerve gas, he began struggling with debilitating bouts of anxiety and depression.

His circumstances worsened and he couldn’t maintain a steady job. Charles moved in with his mother, but within a year she died and his childhood home went into foreclosure.

Catholic Charities’ Project Veterans’ Independence, which guides homeless veterans into permanent housing so they can live independently and have access to support networks that get them back on their feet, reached out and helped Charles.

“I was out of the service, out of a family, out of a job and out of a home. Catholic Charities found me

and helped me to not only find a place to live - but they helped me to turn my life around.”

• Charles, honorably discharged US Veteran

Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone’s life.

Thank you!

Prayer Line Ministry "And we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours." – 1st John 5:14-15

Are you feeling called to pray for the intentions of fellow parishioners? The Prayer Line Ministry is one form of pastoral care we can easily provide for those in need. This ministry consists of parishioners committed to offering some time each day, individually, in prayer for the needs of individuals in our parish and beyond.

What the Prayer Line Ministry is: Our parish receives numerous prayer requests from parishioners and non-parishioners for a variety of needs, but mostly for those who are experiencing an illness. By using email, we can share the prayer requests of our community in a respectful and confidential manner. However, this ministry is not limited to those who have email; those who do not have access to the internet can participate as well. Our coordinator will send out an email with prayer requests weekly. Everyone’s personal prayer style is different, but each minister is requested to pray for the special intentions listed in the weekly email for a few minutes each day within their daily prayer time. Requirements include your commitment to praying for those listed, a caring heart, a computer &/or telephone.

How the Prayer Line Works: • Members of this ministry pray in the privacy of their own home at their own convenience. • Prayer requests are sent via email. This enables members to access prayer intentions and pray when it is convenient (for non-internet users, call the rectory on a weekly basis for your list). • To join this ministry, please send an email to Maria Pinzone at [email protected] or call the rectory stating you would like to be added as a member. Be sure to include your full name, phone number, and email address. • Once your email address is added to the group, you will receive emails with prayer requests on a weekly basis. All email addresses are kept confidential. • All prayer requests to the ministry volunteers are sent through email in order to ensure that all members receive the prayer requests and to ensure the most up-to-date prayer request list is used. All prayer requests are kept confidential.

Some tips for praying for the needs of others: Pray when you can…whenever your schedule allows. Pray alone, with a friend, or with family. Feel free to print out the request list and keep it nearby.

As a community of faith, we are blessed to have people willing to spend some time in prayer for the needs of

others. We invite you to join us in the joyful and rewarding work of praying for the needs of others, and

and thank you in advance for answering this call to Ministry.
