• Ngai pudlunthi naa-itya, ngai wangkanthi warra Kaurna

meyurna, miipudlunthi ngaityu kuinyuntapinthi.

• What I just said, for those of you who lack the Kaurna

language, is that my name is David and while I am not

originally from this country, I am proud to call it my

home and I do so in the language of the Kaurna people as

a mark of my respect.

• Good afternoon.

• It is exciting for me to be surrounded by young engineers

and scientists operating at the peak of their new

knowledge,

Page 15: Mawson Lakes Hotel & Quest Mawson Lakes€¦ · Student Presentations – Group 2 WCSD & SES 1. Gloria Chan (WCSD GIP) 2. Thomas Dalby (WCSD IEP) 3. Dane Plummer (WCSD IEP) 4. Rudraksh

• people who have made such a great impression upon our

Defence Science and Technology partner that you were

invited to join this Conference.

• I am especially happy that so many of you are UniSA

students because it is this kind of exposure, along with

the industry practice that you are currently getting, that

prepares you for successful careers.

• It’s what we do as Australia’s University of Enterprise.

• We make a very big deal of the partnerships we form

with industry and the professions

• and all of our programs are informed by them –

• from co-developed programs to inviting industry experts

onto our campuses as Industry Professors.

• Those links also make placements and internships for

students possible.

Page 16: Mawson Lakes Hotel & Quest Mawson Lakes€¦ · Student Presentations – Group 2 WCSD & SES 1. Gloria Chan (WCSD GIP) 2. Thomas Dalby (WCSD IEP) 3. Dane Plummer (WCSD IEP) 4. Rudraksh

• We do this to keep our programs relevant and give our

students the working knowledge of their future careers so

that when they graduate, they can hit the ground running.

• The opportunities that industry placements and

conferences such as these offer are a major way to

influence your future career choices.

• And, in this industry, our partner of choice is the Defence

Science and Technology Group with whom we have had

a long history of working closely.

• It started as a contract Research and Development

relationship,

• and now we have a strategic partnership which

encompasses all aspects of a globally competitive

innovation system which is vital to the development of

the South Australian and national economies.

• We currently have about 40 active projects which focus

on human/machine interaction, data analytics and the

space industry,

Page 17: Mawson Lakes Hotel & Quest Mawson Lakes€¦ · Student Presentations – Group 2 WCSD & SES 1. Gloria Chan (WCSD GIP) 2. Thomas Dalby (WCSD IEP) 3. Dane Plummer (WCSD IEP) 4. Rudraksh

• so if any of you are thinking of postgraduate work in

engineering, science and computing, particularly focused

on the defence industry,

• this is the place to study.

• Come join us here at UniSA.

• We’re working on innovative new defence-related

projects which include:

o passive submarine tracking systems,

o anthropometric modelling for naval garments and

equipment,

o behaviour modelling systems for testing combat

strategies, and

o nano-engineered colour-changing camouflage

coatings that can be applied to vehicles.

• UniSA is one of seven Australian universities to partner

with DST-G and the Australian Army in the Human

Performance Research Network.

• The HPRnet (HIP ER NET) investigates enhancing

human performance in complex environments through

the integration of virtual reality, wearable computing,

cognitive neuroscience and mental training.

• There’s a lot of fascinating work being done at UniSA

for the defence industry and we’d welcome your skills

here.

• Or, if you’re looking to walk straight into a career, take

your bright ideas to work for DST-G.

• I know Dr Alex Zelinksy has taken careful note of who

the best and the brightest are.

• For now, let me congratulate all of the winners of the

various presentations of the last two days.

• We have seen some wonderful examples of the work of

bright engineers, scientists and computer experts who

will go onto make an impact in the careers they’ve

chosen.

• Of all the great work that’s been shared at this

Conference, I want to make a particular mention of the

eight finalists in the People’s Choice Award.

• You not only have great ideas of interest to your future

employers, you have also sparked the imagination of

your peers - enough for them to vote for you.

• Since that’s an even tougher audience, it’s a great

achievement.

• I wish you all the best of luck in your future and no

doubt we’ll be hearing more of you as you advance your

careers in this vital industry sector.

• Thank you.
