PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO PASTORS PONDERINGS

Dear Parishioners, As we reflect this Sunday on the Lord’s Ascension, there are times when we too probably would just like to leave, or have something end. After 33 years on earth, three years of ministry, death followed by resurrection and 40 days with his disciples afterwards, Jesus got on the ele-vator and … clocked out. He didn’t do this out of anger, just 33 years on earth, 3 years of intense ministry, suffering, death and resurrec-tion were … enough. And our society, having been so devoted to self-care and boundary maintenance, would be probably better able to understand this than most oth-ers over the course of these past 2000 years. But then why would Jesus want to leave, why would it be the right thing to do? Well, God’s plan for the Earth was never one of micro-managing. In the first chapters of Genesis, we hear that God created the earth in six days, and after creating the first humans, rested on the seventh. Afterwards, his interaction with humans was … a nightly walk. The first humans messed up, requiring somewhat more intervention, at times, as in the Exodus for instance, rather decisive. But there is an aspect to God that does clearly “like to keep boundaries.” God is God, after all, of the whole universe, not just of the Earth. So in the fullness of time, he did send his son down to our world. Jesus spent those 33 years, one wonders if there were times when it felt like an Eternity. And he did his best, assembled a team, declared it a Church, left us as we’ll remember next week, the Holy Spirit to guide us even after he went home but … just like his Father, Jesus, the Son, left us to be responsible for our Common Home. And yes, we continue to mess up. And yes we suffer for messing up. And even more painfully, _others_ often suffer for our sins. But God does love us, still has too much confidence in us, his creations, to take away our freedom. So today, we remember that after his time with us, Jesus packed-up and left us again to our own devices. We gave us all that we need to make it work. How are we doing? But we have a God who does in fact trust us. Happy Feast of the Ascension! -- Fr Dennis

- P. Dennis

SANTO DE LA SEMANA

“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION

SAINT OF THE WEEK

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Dolittle Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final desti-ny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory.

SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595) May 26

In a shop near the Vatican, a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent English and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal portrait, when pressed, activated a record-ed blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled disapproval. The shopkeeper grunted, “They’re a very somber order who’ve left the Church. I recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” re-plied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be som-ber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint Peter’s steps defending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially the young to Christ—and frequent confession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provid-ed recreation and devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri chal-lenges each of us to begin improving Church and world by changing ourselves with unfailing joy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J.
