A Message from
Our Pastor
Jesus said to them, "Come, have
breakfast." And none of the disciples
dared to ask him, "Who are you?"
because they realized it was the
Lord. Jesus came over and took the
bread and gave it to them, and in
like manner the fish. - Jn 21:12-13
Back in the middle of March, Bishop Perez published a
letter basically restating the proper procedure for receiving
the Holy Eucharist at Mass. Since that time several people
have asked for a clarification of what all that means. Well,
the answer is fairly simple! The Mass is a community prayer,
which implies that we act as a community. During the
Liturgy of the Mass, the basic postures of standing, sitting
and kneeling are appropriate at various times: standing for
processing and singing, sitting for listening, kneeling
for worshiping God in the Eucharistic Prayer. Since we are
worshiping God together in the Mass, it makes sense that as
far as possible we do things together. Obviously, some folks
are just not able to kneel and some are not able to stand for
a prolonged period of time, so there are exceptions to every
rule, but by and large, the community acts as one. In the
Bishop's letter he was simply reiterating what other liturgical
documents and directives have already stated. The points of
clarification were simply to point out that standing during
the communion rite is meant to be an act of solidarity for all
those at Mass. Standing as we sing and during the time
people are receiving the Eucharist is a reminder that this is
time we should be praying for one another. AFTER
everyone has received, it is then time to either kneel or be
seated for a short while of private prayer and adoration.
Probably the most notable item in the Bishop's letter is
the mention of "sacred silence". We live in such a noisy age
and are surrounded by a cacophony that sometimes makes
it difficult to think. Sacred silence is an ancient concept
based on the Word of God: "Be still and know that I am
God!" I love good music as much as anyone, but for a little
while at least, to be able to sit or kneel in silence, perhaps
interrupted by a baby's cry, can be a profound experience
just in itself. I do not think that it is meant to prevent all
hymns or reflection pieces in the time after Communion, but
rather to give equal weight to the simplicity of silence that
can be so difficult to find in our world today.
The "bottom line" of all this is found in the Catechism of
the Catholic Church, #1140, which refers to the Constitution
on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council which
states: "Liturgical services are not private functions but are
celebrations of the Church..., the holy people united and
organized under the authority of the bishops."
So when Communion is completed, it is not necessary to
wait for the Eucharist to be reposed in the tabernacle, or for
the priest of deacon to cleanse the altar vessels; rather,
when you see that all the ministers of Holy Communion
have returned to the altar, then either kneel or be seated for
a few quiet moments of prayer.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to call
or drop me a note.
Thanks for your reverence, and your cooperation!

Jesus invited the disciples to “come and
have breakfast.” Through this breakfast
at the beach and the Last Supper, Jesus
teaches us that meals can be more than
eating. Meals are opportunities to
share prayer, the stories of our lives,
understanding and forgiveness for
one another. Expect Jesus to be present
at family meals.

You Are Invited: Learn About the
Eucharist! Join St. Barnabas for a three-
week video study about Christ’s real
presence in the Eucharist! The Eucharist
may be the most difficult concept for
us Catholics to believe – the miracle of
the bread and wine becoming the body, blood, soul and
divinity of Jesus. When you examine the Passover meal and
its connection with the Old Testament, it all comes together
and makes sense in a whole new way. This meal changed
the course of human history, but WHO is the Eucharist? It is
a taste of Heaven. Join us for this three-week event, held in
Bedell Commons: Wednesday mornings: May 8, May 15,
and May 22 @ 9:15 a.m. You can also experience this series
at home through FORMED! Visit the FORMED Community

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion EMHC is a ministry composed of
parishioners trained by the Diocese of Cleveland to
distribute Holy Communion to the people during
Mass. Some may take Eucharist to the homebound

Confirmation; you attend one training session provided by
the diocese and another to be trained as EMHC for St.
Barnabas.
How do you do this? The diocese will be training
ministers, at various locations, between April 27 and May
19. Share your interest with one of our priests and call Marie
at 330-467-9747 for more information or to register. WE

Notes from the Blue Army: The following is the fifth of a series
on the titles given to Our Lady in the Litany of Loreto
written by Fr. Donald Calloway. Remember, Every Hail
Mary Counts!
Virgin Most Prudent- Mary embodies the virtue of
prudence. Being completely Immaculate, Mary possessed
the height of every virtue. Being prudent involves making
good decisions. Mary can steer us to the path of virtue.
Virgin Most Venerable- We venerate Mary. When you
venerate someone, it means you hold them up in high
esteem. We're doing something right if we hold Mary in
high regard. We need to pray to Mary, remembering that
she's our mother, but at the same time, the greatest of all
the saints, the most powerful intercessor before God. Only
the Holy Trinity is above her in status. She's the Queen of
Heaven, the Queen of Earth, the Queen of Angels, and
Queen of Saints. So when we pray to her, we ought to
remember that we owe her the highest reverence and
respect. In her perfection, she is incredibly merciful and
compassionate and can help us seek pardon and grace from
her Son. That's why people all over the world have
venerated her through images, statues, and devotions such
as the Rosary.
Virgin Most Renowned- Mary is famous. Even from the
beginning, she was held in the highest regard among Christ's
apostles and disciples. She's so renowned because she's the
most perfect reflection of the Holy Trinity that a human
ever could be. She leads people to Jesus. That's what makes
her so well known, so well liked. Globally, she's the most
recognized painted person in the history of the world. The
Madonna and Child is stamped throughout art history.
Virgin Most Powerful- Mary is the most potent creature
ever created. Her holiness makes her so powerful. From the
very beginning, God intended to place within her feminine
foot the power to crush evil. She did that and continues to
do that today. This makes Satan so angry. He hates that he
was beaten by such a seemingly insignificant woman. But
through her "yes," the Lord gave this young woman from
Nazareth the chance to lead us to Christ, to victory over sin
and death. That's pretty amazing. When you pray to her,
never forget her power. She's the Mother of the Creator,
the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, the Mother of Christ. Only
the Holy Trinity has more power than she does. Remember,
Every Hail Mary Counts!

TODAY IS BUNDLE SUNDAY A Cleveland Furniture Bank
truck will be in the parking lot this weekend from 4:30 p.m.
to 6:15 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday from, 7:30 a.m. to
1:15 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to accept your
donations of clothing, household goods and small furniture.
It’s time to donate all the “stuff” you haven’t used in ages.
Remember – your cast-offs are someone else’s treasures.
Thanks for helping us to help others!
HELP A LOCAL FAMILY We are in need of a queen

teenage son is currently sleeping on an old mattress on the
floor. If you would be willing make a monetary donation
toward the purchase of these items, please contact Laura at
330-908-1527 for more information.
We are aware of parishioners who need help, but are too
embarrassed to ask. SVDP is here to help you. All
information is confidential and is not shared with anyone
outside the SVDP. Call the Parish Office phone, 330-467-
7959, press “7” and leave your confidential message. Your
call will be returned in 24-48 hours. Please, do not hesitate
to call.
