SPRING CLEANUP SCHEDULED For the spring cleanup, we will be doing a curbside pickup again this year. Residents will be allowed to put their items out on the curb from April 5 th - 7 th . Curbside pickup will begin at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, April 8 th . The following rules will be enforced: Items must be set out by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, April 8 th . The maximum amount per residence will be the equivalent of two pickup truck loads. All material must be loadable by hand without the use of heavy equipment. Please have items bundled together or bagged. Tree branches must be cut in lengths of 5' or less and must be tied together in tight bundles not to exceed 50 lbs. Tree limbs not tied in bundles will be rejected. Loose items such as leaves, weeds, grass and shrub trimmings need to be placed in bags or suitable disposable containers. Individual refuse items must weigh less than 50 lbs. Not accepted: construction material, wood, sheetrock, concrete, sod, soil, rocks, highly volatile material, lead products, asbestos, hazardous waste, refrigerators. Do not block mailboxes or fire hydrants. Items not meeting requirements will not be picked up. The city appreciates your cooperation in the cleanup. If you have any questions please call 801-394-5541 ext. 1201. THE FUTURE OF GARBAGE AND RECYCLING The disposal of solid waste (garbage) and the proper recycling of recyclable materials is a concern for all of us. Landfills are quickly filling up and becoming harder to find and with the value of recyclable materials at a low, it is becoming more and more costly to dump these materials at recycling centers. cities use to get paid for their recyclable materials. Now, we pay as much to dispose of recyclable materials, as we do our solid waste, at the transfer station. Recently, I attended, along with other city and county officials, a presentation titled “The Future of Garbage.” The main topic of discussion was the company HERHOF GmbH of Germany that builds and operates several plants in Europe, which ecologically converts waste to energy. The plants also compost green waste. For example, a plant could be built in Weber County by a private company, for 30-40 million dollars, which could process all of our solid waste, recyclable material, and most of our green waste. Trucks would pick up the material, as they do now, at your home. You would not have to separate the recycling material from the solid waste, no more blue cans. Separate cans would be required for green waste. The trucks would dump the material at the ‘no-odor’ plant for processing. We were told at the county meeting that there would be no ‘tipping fees’ to dump the material at the plant. We currently pay about $40.00 per ton in tipping fees for solid waste and recyclable materials. The only cost to cities would be for the cans and to pay the hauler, as we currently do. When the material is dumped at the plant, it is dried and then sorted by machines. This includes glass, metals, plastics, fiber products (paper and cardboard) and other materials. Green waste is processed separately. The fiber and plastics are made into a fuel that burns much like coal and is used in coal fired furnaces, such as is used in the cement plant in Croydon, Utah. The big difference in the fuel produced, is that it burns clean, unlike coal. Following the extensive processing at the plant, only about 10% of the original waste material is transported to a landfill. I, along with the others, who attended the county meeting, came away excited about the possibilities of having such a processing plant in Weber County. County and city officials are now looking to see if such a plant can become a reality. Hope you find this information as interesting, as I did! Spring is just around the corner! Norm Searle, Mayor

RECREATION NEWS

BONNEVILLE CTC CORNER

Underage drinking – isn’t it a rite of passage? Most kids will drink alcohol, won’t they? It can’t cause long-lasting harm as long as I monitor it, can it? No, no, and YES!

As more research is done on the effects of underage drinking, it clearly shows that if a person does not drink any alcohol before the age of 21, their chances of developing addictions are significantly reduced. And – since the brain is still forming connections, alcohol can impact and alter those connections. The only safe amount of alcohol for young people is zero.

What can you do – how can you talk about this to your child? You can visit the “Talk, They Listen” site and download the mobile app at: https://www.samhsa.gov/underage-drinking/mobile-application. Then at any time you can browse different topics and be prepared for when you make an opportunity to talk to your child about why they should not drink alcohol while they are underage. Or go online from your computer/tablet to browse and learn.

We’re here to help – if you would like more information or are interested in joining our efforts (it takes as little as two hours a month to make a difference!) please contact us at [email protected]. Thanks!!
