President Steve Morgan called the meeting to order. President Steve told us his mustache is proof of how much air he can grow in a month. He reminded us that this is Foundation Month.

Katherine Henski led the club in the pledge to the American flag.

PP Tony Gedeon shared an inspiration. He shared a prayer that thanked Rotary and as we get ready for a new year we need to be sure to keep Rotary in our hearts.

President Steve asked for guests to be introduced. Dave Livingston introduced Leila who has been a speaker for our club. She is interested in finding out what old people do for lunch. Peter Ehrhorn’s wife was introduced. President Steve asked that all Past Presidents and Past District Governors stand and be recognized. We had three Past District Governors in attendance: PDG Phil Sammer, PDG Roy King, and PDG Dave Benson.

PDG Phil Sammer lead our club in our welcome song. PP/PE Carol Riley welcomed our guests and they introduced themselves to us. We welcomed PP Ann Lockhart and PP Robert Burns from Scotland.

Announcements:

1. President Steve told us that tomorrow is Books for Kids at Waikiki Elementary School (8:00 a.m.). In addition, we are collecting Toys for Tots (Marines), Christmas Party on December 17th at PP/PE Carol Riley’s house, Rotary on the Road next week at Hawaii Theatre, Serenity Gardens project on Saturday, thank you for giving food with Rotary Clubs of Alamoana and Honolulu Sunset. President Steve also shared that we gave money to the Rotary Rose Parade float.

PDG Phil Sammer inducted PDG Dave Benson into our club. PP Dave Livingston was his sponsor and said that PDG Dave was in law enforcement in Honolulu and was a District Governor in the state of Vermont. He used to be a member of the Rotary Club of Honolulu but has selected to join our club! PP Dave Livingston gave PDG Dave Benson his Certificate of Membership. He received information on Rotary and his first bill! PDG Dave Benson told us that he was glad to be joining our club and that the time is just right.

Lisa Ahmed shared the bucket. PP Dave Livingston said he is turning 68 on Christmas Day and thanked everyone for the lights on the Christmas trees in celebration. He said that

there is a golf tournament for the Navy Club and if anyone wants to join in, just let him know. He thanked everyone for bringing Toys for Tots. PP Janet Scheffer said they are just 2 likes away from having 1,000 likes, so please like the Facebook Page and Instagram page if you have not yet done so. PP Gloria King mentioned the Books for Kids at Waikiki Elementary School and Toys for Tots. Lisa Ahmed gave in honor of her brother-in-law who passed away two weeks ago and her uncle, a long-time Rotarian, who has also passed away.

PP Gene Grounds introduced our speaker: Mufi Hanneman. As Mayor, Muffi cleaned up the West Side of Oahu and made a positive difference in so many ways.

Mufi thanked us for the invitation to speak at our meeting. He gave $10 happy dollars because the hotel strike is over! He likes speaking with Rotarians because always give back. He told us that he was going to talk about an important issue: Overtourism.

The world now has 1.8 billion tourists a year. The growth rate continues to rise. Many places are crafting ways to curtail tourism, like in Boracay and Machu Picchu.

In Hawaii, we need quality tourism, not quantity tourism. There are five points to consider: Marketing, Airlift capacity, Public Safety, the Aloha Spirt, and Infrastructure.

Currently transient taxes all go to the general fund. We need to improve our airport. We need an airport authority.

When Mufi was Mayor, changes were made at Hahauma Bay. The charge for getting in went back to Hahauma Bay, the bay was closed one day a week. Tourists and locals just

pay for parking. This is a model that could be used for other parks.

King Tides on Maui, the rising sea level is a problem. We need to take global warming seriously. The Ala Wai is a problem. In 2006, while Mufi was Mayor, we had a 48,000,000 gallon sewer spill. We had 48 straight days of rain. The sewage was dumped into the Ala Wai canal. We now need a flood mitigation plan. We must fortify for potential flooding. We need plans to fix our infrastructure.

There were plans to build condominiums in Waimea Valley. Muffi worked with others to get enough money to buy the land. The land now belongs to Hawaiian Affairs.

We have challenges today: Haiku Stairs on the Windward Side. Hawaii Island flumes. Illegal vacation rentals. All must play by the same rules. Kauai Tourism has developed a strategic plan. The Big Island and Maui are addressing transient vacations. All islands need to do these things.

President Steve gave a Four Way Test plaque to our speaker. He facilitated the drawing of our lucky ticket. PP Janet Scheffer had her ticket pulled. She pulled a red marble. Better luck next time! We all said the Four Way Test together and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, PP/PE Carol Riley

WEEKLY REPORT — WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2018

The Rotary Foundation inducted into Oxford Chancellor Court of Benefactors

The Rotary Foundation has been welcomed into the University of Oxford’s Chancellor’s Court of Benefactors for its continuous support of the university.

Since 1949, The Foundation has provided scholar-ships to more than 200 Oxford scholars including a former American ambassador to the United King-dom, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and investiga-tive reporter with the New York Times, and a Direc-tor & Senior Fellow at the Ansari Africa Centre.

“The university is enormously grateful to The Rotary Foundation for their support of graduate scholar-ships at Oxford,” said Professor Louise Richardson, Vice-Chancellor, University of Oxford. “For almost 70 years, this support has enabled students from around the world to benefit from all that Oxford has to offer.”

Membership of the Court of Benefactors is con-ferred by the Chancellor on those who have been outstandingly generous towards the university. Mem-bers may be individuals, or nominated representa-tives of companies and trusts.

Michael Webb, trustee of The Rotary Foundation, accepted membership on behalf of the Foundation on 11th October at a ceremony in Oxford.

“The Rotary Foundation is honoured to receive this designation and I am humbled to accept on its be-half,” said Mr Webb. “The Foundation has fostered international interaction and understanding through academic scholars at Oxford for decades, and we will continue our efforts to help develop the world’s future leaders through academic support at this prestigious university.”

The Rotary Foundation is Rotary’s only charity, es-tablished over 100 years ago to support Rotary Inter-national in its mission to achieve world understand-ing and peace through international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs.

Today wie had a slight improvement in attendance with a total of 38 members and guests. Food was acceptable but nothing to talk about. Another four meetings then The Prince!

Entertaining and Educating Hawaii’s Audiences

Hawaii Theatre Center is dedicated to providing a broad range of entertainment, cultural and educational experiences to benefit the people and visitors of Hawaii in a facility of recognized excellence. It is our mission to provide arts education to Hawaii’s youth, promote the revitalization of downtown Honolulu and stimulate nightlife while enhancing the overall quality of life in Honolulu.

Coined the Pride of the Pacific

The historic Hawaii Theatre is owned and operated by the Hawaii Theatre Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and hosts over 100,000 guests annually. Built in 1922 by Consolidated Amusements of Honolulu, Hawaii Theatre was established as a venue for theatre, popular entertainment and film. In

the mid-1930s, the theatre became a predominately popular grand movie palace and remained such until the advent of television in the 1950s.

As television grew popular, Hawaii Theatre slowly debilitated as a movie palace and Consolidated Amusements announced the theatre closing in 1984. Pending its disposition, the building was nurtured by the Aloha Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society, ATOS. ATOS interest was anchored by the continued residence of the Rob-ert Morton Unified Orchestra Theatre Organ ¬– one of two theatres Consolidated had brought to the islands in 1922.

Protecting the Future of Hawaii Theatre

In 1984, citizens dedicated to protecting the theatre from demolition formed the Hawaii Theatre Center, HTC. HTC obtained both the theatre itself and sufficient landbase to insure future viability.

In 1986, the Hawaii Theatre and the adjacent Austin, Pantheon and McLean Buildings were purchased. Hawaii Theatre continued to operate on a limited basis until the fall of 1989, when it was closed for renovation.
