As members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, another department goal is to compete at the highest level in all athletic venues. Our coaches are recruiting not only young men and women of character, but also athletically gifted and talented young people. It is my belief that you will see well-rounded student-athletes who demonstrate both integrity and athletic prowess as Duhawks.

venue for concerts/speakers provides seating capacity between 2,289 and 2,913.— A two-level fitness center overlooking lower campus provides 9,500 square-feet of strength and

conditioning and cardiovascular space.— The locker room facilities support

Loras students, visitors and comprehensive student-athlete needs. In addition, there are coaches’ offices, a concessions/retail area, hospitality area, an athletic training room and storage.

Hello From TEAM DUHAWK!

We are embarking on a new academic and athletic year at Loras College. As Denise Udelhofen and I begin our third year of our administration of Duhawk Athletics, our goals remain the same. We want to teach our student-athletes to be great citizens and people through their involvement in athletics. We, also, always strive to compete at the highest level in the Iowa Conference and in the NCAA. While our season and year are new, our goals remain the same.

Denise and I have worked extremely hard to rebrand what was once called the Duhawk Club. The Duhawk Club worked to financially benefit the entire department. In reorganizing this booster club, our discussions revolved around how we could move forward by garnering more support for our student-athletes and, at the same time, provide more benefits for our members. The true greatness of Loras College revolves around the people who make up this proud institution both past and present. We want to take advantage of these Duhawk relationships for our members. Our goal is to be more accessible, visible and provide more opportunity for members to celebrate and connect to Loras College Athletics. Denise, our coaching staff and I will be on the road to see and celebrate the Duhawks with our members. Consequently, we hope more alumni and friends of Loras College participate in this new program. We also hope that TEAM DUHAWK serves its members at a more beneficial level.

Please consider becoming a member of TEAM DUHAWK! Serve the Duhawks, Support the Duhawks and Socialize with the Duhawks!

As Always…GO Duhawks!

IIAC Conference

Founded in 923 and recognized as one of the top NCAA III leagues in the nation, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consists of nine private, liberal arts institutions.

The IIAC sponsors 5 intercollegiate championships in men’s and women’s sports. The IIAC has proven to be one of the nation’s most dominant conferences, annually having many of its teams finish highly at the NCAA III national level.

IIAC MISSIOn StAtEMEntThe Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) consists of independent, regionally accredited, residential four-year, liberal arts colleges that share common academic philosophies and goals and that place primary emphasis on the academic progress of students. To that end the athletic programs of IIAC member institutions facilitate the intellectual, spiritual and physical development of all students, whether as participants or spectators.

Members of the IIAC place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience of our student-athletes and their successful completion of it. Therefore, the member colleges seek to provide an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of our student-athletes’ educational experience. In that vein, intercollegiate competition is provided by the IIAC to develop participants’ skills in self-discipline, teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and ethical conduct; it is not provided primarily to serve the entertainment needs of spectators nor the talent needs of professional sports teams.

Student-athletes in the IIAC should experience growth of physical and mental skills as well as an appreciation for the rewards of adequate preparation and superior performance. They also should learn to work and play with others who are unlike themselves but who are talented and productive persons. They also should experience the pride of representing an organization, not just themselves, and the responsibility of proper conduct that comes with it. But primarily, they should have the opportunity to excel in their academic work as well as in their athletic endeavors; competitive events and practice sessions will be scheduled to minimize the potential conflict between academic and athletic excellence. In sum, athletic competition in the IIAC serves to encourage our students to participate in activities beyond the classroom, to enhance skills helpful to career success, and to assist them in their general development as human beings.

Men’s Basketball PhilosophyWhy would someone want to be part of the Men’s Basketball team at Loras College?

• Balance – We preach balance in your life. For a student-athlete who has achieved great things, this is a school that will cater to your ability to balance many different activities well. We have been recognized as a school of distinction from US News and World Report and are ranked in the top 20 out of 37 Midwest colleges for academic excellence. Nothing is more important to us than your success in the classroom.

• Relationship to Coaches – We consider this to be our ultimate strength. The only way we help to affect your future is by getting to know you so well that we understand how to motivate you personally. We want you to feel comfortable coming to speak to us about anything. We are uniquely willing to show you how important that is to us by giving you the cell numbers of all the players in our program. I want you to ask them how much we care about each of them personally. It is very important to us that we influence you personally to set a great purpose and to achieve more than you thought possible.

• Undecided direction – Many students who enroll in college are undecided on a major. Loras thrives in the area of helping a young person determine which direction he or she wants to go academically and completing it in four years. We, as coaches, find true meaning in helping you find something that drives you as passionately as basketball.

• State of the Art Arena – Just over two years ago, through privately raised money, Loras constructed the Athletics and Wellness Center. This Arena serves as a symbol of both the importance of athletics at Loras College and the value of the education you receive as a member of our basketball program. There are no boundaries to your development as an athlete with state of the art facilities at Loras College. This attitude permeates throughout our campus and is a great example of the great balance we hope to achieve with every participant.

• Serving the Community – Our team takes very seriously the importance of giving our time and resources to building a better community. Loras College was again admitted to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction in 20 for its strong institutional commitment to service and compelling campus-community partnerships that produce measurable results for the community. Our basketball program continues to be a leader on this campus in this area.

• team Building Experiences – Building a family atmosphere around our team is an important factor in our success. From playing paint-ball to bowling to service projects, we are committed to the emotional connectedness our team feels. We, as a basketball staff, believe chemistry wins games. Our team communicates well and trusts each other which is the byproduct of team building.

• Championship Level Success – We have a history of championship level success in our program. We have an environment where National Championships are realistic goals. If your goal as a player is to compete against the best division III competition in the country, then Loras College is the place to be.

• Affordability – Barron’s Best Buys in Education guide, a national publication, consistently places Loras College on their list of the 240 most affordable colleges in the nation. In addition, our 2.3% student loan Cohort Default Rate is well below the national average of 8.8%. Julie Dunn, director of financial aid, sums it up best, “It is a great achievement for Loras students to have such low debt after receiving a four year degree from a private institution.”

• Retention – Loras College carries a 79% student retention rate.

Season PreviewOn behalf of the entire coaching staff, welcome to another great season of Loras College Basketball!

The 20-2 team is eager and excited to get started. Everyone associated with our team is focused on daily improvement, playing a difficult schedule and competing at the highest level possible every day. The coaching staff shares in this passion and will hopefully guide this team to our third national tournament appearance in the last six years.

At the center of our preparation is the commitment we’ve made to each other in this season as we fight for an Iowa Conference championship. Our unified message as a team is “Together” as we play this game for each other. That commitment and focus begins with our senior captains – Danny Pawelski, Tim Kelly, Jordan Harrelson, Brian Gaughan and Zach Peterson. Not only are these five great teammates, but they are terrific examples of the balanced student/athlete we pursue for our program. This team will also have a great mix of underclassmen we hope you get to know and enjoy watching compete.

The Iowa Conference will again be a very balanced league with many of the teams returning their best players. I expect this season to be a dogfight for that championship trophy. We are committed to competing with class and sportsmanship in our pursuit of this championship.

As you look around our facility know that we are blessed to have one of the best arenas in the Midwest. The Athletic and Wellness Center gives our players all the best tools to achieve their dreams on the basketball floor. The value of competing in athletics are the lessons we learn about teamwork, accountability and adversity. Loras College puts a premium on the pursuit of these valuable life lessons and is an example of how sports here are in concert with the vision and mission of Loras College.

As you can see from this booklet, Loras College men’s basketball has a rich tradition of success both on and off the basketball floor. We have had a great preseason of team building which includes service work at Camp Albrecht Acres, reading to local elementary students, team paintball, Duhawk Dunker elementary basketball camp, bowling and team meals at my home. We are delighted you are here to join us for a game and we appreciate your support for our Duhawk family. Please enjoy the game and again, thanks for supporting my team.

My Best,

Greg GortonHead Men’s Basketball Coach

This spring the Loras College men’s basketball team volunteered their time to Camp Albrecht Acres in nearby Sherrill, Iowa. Albrecht Acres “provides a unique environment for people with special needs” in the tri-state area. Activities offered by Albrecht Acres include nature study, camping, fishing, swimming, dances, nature trails, hay rides, volleyball and disc golf.

The Duhawks provided some manpower for the non-profit organization with a day full of maintenance and manual labor. The coaching staff and players worked mostly outdoors to clean up the wooded land and high traffic areas of the 40-acre campus. In one day’s work the team was able to once again help the appearance and function of Albrecht Acres so they may offer the best service they can to the people who utilize their services.

“Coach and entire Duhawk team! Wow, you have no idea how grateful we are for all your help. The director was surprised you got so much done. Amazing.” - Shiela Vandermillen, Camp Assistant

Dear Duhawk Fans,

Welcome to the Loras College Athletic Department and the Loras College 2011-12 Men’s Basketball Media Guide. The entire Loras community is thrilled that you are experiencing Loras College and “Duhawk Nation.” We hope you are able to visit Dubuque, Iowa, so you can experience our historic, beautiful and state-of-the-art facilities firsthand. Please always know that whether you visit for the first time or are able to see us regularly, you are welcomed by our athletic department, faculty and staff and, most importantly, our student body.

The Loras College Athletic Department is constantly striving to extend the classroom for all of our student-athletes. Teachable moments occur for our coaches and student-athletes literally hundreds of times a day at practice and games. Traits like strength of character, sportsmanship, a solid work ethic and teamwork are taught and reinforced to produce Loras College alumni who will serve the world with integrity!

In the end, we hope you, like thousands before you, enjoy and experience the tradition and engaging personalities that make us all Duhawks.

Thanks for your time and as always…Go Duhawks!

Athletic and Wellness Center

The construction of the 74,189 square-foot athletic and wellness facility began in June 2006 and opened in November 2007. This newest structural addition to our campus includes:— A basketball/volleyball arena with maximum traditional seating for 1,732 spectators. The same

venue for concerts/speakers provides seating capacity between 2,289 and 2,913.— A two-level fitness center overlooking lower campus provides 9,500 square-feet of strength and

conditioning and cardiovascular space.— The locker room facilities support

Loras students, visitors and comprehensive student-athlete needs. In addition, there are coaches’ offices, a concessions/retail area, hospitality area, an athletic training room and storage.
