““

Travis Bass was a dear friend of head basketball coach Klint Pleasant. They were teammates together on the foot-ball team at Abilene Christian University from 1994-1996. They remained extremely close after their college days and were major influences in each other lives. Due to the close relationship, Travis ended up becoming one of RC basketball’s biggest fans and supporters. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and fought hard for four years before passing away due to complications from the disease in May 2011. Coach Pleasant traveled to Seattle, WA several times during Travis’ fight with ALS and then assisted with his eulogy.

Travis was a special individual and one of the most talented persons Coach Pleasant has ever known. Travis owned real estate, car lots and mini storages, and was an accountant by trade. He also developed and sold his own BBQ sauce and had a BBQ catering business. Later in his life, he decided to study and practice law and gradu-ated from the University of Idaho with a law degree. He wanted to fight for people that needed help and always envisioned doing most of his work pro bono. He loved life and he loved people and never seemed to meet a stranger.

Travis would take off from work for weeks and sometimes months at a time during the basketball season to watch Pleasant coach while at Wayne State, University of Tennessee-Martin, Kent State University, Abilene Christian, and of course, Rochester College.

Travis and Coach Pleasant shared an incredible bond. They traveled all across the country together and not a day went by, until Travis was too weak to do so, that they did not talk. Most importantly, Travis was a man of deep faith. Coach Pleasant cites his relationship with Travis in college as one of the key influences that helped him in his own faith journey.

Coach Pleasant remains in contact with Travis’ parents (Randy and Sheila) and his wife (Kim) and children (Hannah, Savannah and Tristin).

Travis loved RC Basketball, and his life and memory was honored all throughout the 2011-12 season as Pleasant’s team wore a “TB” patch on their uniforms.

Coach Pleasant is now trying to start an annual “Travis Bass Classic” to honor his friend. The classic would feature RC and three other teams, played every year with anticipation of raising money that would go toward ALS research.

.There is no way to put into words how important my relationship with Travis was and still is to me. He was my hero and my mentor, but most of all he was my dear friend. Not a day goes by that I do not think about him and the incredible influence he had on my life. He was there on my best day (the day Rachel said, “I do”) and he was there on my worst day (the day the doctors told me that Rachel would probably die of brain cancer). I often find myself both sad and angry because he’s gone…but then I remind myself, to have a friend like Travis for just one day was one of the great blessings of my life.

head coach, 2nd seasonklintPLEASANT

Rochester College is a very familiar place for Head Men’s Basketball Coach Klint Pleasant, who took the reins from his father and longtime RC basketball coach, Garth Pleasant, after assisting him from 2007-2011.

Pleasant picked up right where his father left off, tying a school record for wins in a season with 26 in his first season at the helm. That first season also included a trip to the USCAA National Championship game where the Warriors lost by three points in the closing seconds. Pleasant’s first season was highlighted by a 7-1 re-cord versus NAIA competition including two victories over top 25 nationally ranked teams. In addition, Pleasant’s team also played five NCAA Division I opponents and the Warriors had a chance to win each game with 10 minutes left on the clock. Pleasant’s first season was capped off by winning the NAIA Coach of Character award.

Pleasant’s coaching resume is among the best. He comes to RC from NCAA Di-vision II Abilene Christian University where he was cited as the youngest NCAA Division II college coach in the country. At ACU, Pleasant coached the Wildcats to 25 wins in his first two seasons after taking over a program that had won only 13 games in the two previous seasons.

Before coaching at ACU, Pleasant was an assistant coach at Kent State University (NCAA Div. I). During the 2001-2002 season, Pleasant helped coach the Golden Flashes to a Mid-American Conference record 30 wins as the team advanced to the NCAA Division I Tourna-ment’s Elite Eight. The University of Indiana denied them a trip to the Final 4 on a nationally televised game on CBS. Since then, the Kent State team that Pleasant coached was named the “Mid-American team of the decade.” Pleasant coached and played a major role in de-veloping the team’s center, John Edwards, into an NBA player. Edwards went on to play for both the Indiana Pacers and the Atlanta Hawks. He also coached power forward, Antonio Gates, who now plays in the NFL and is among the best tight ends in the game. Following his only season at Kent State, Pleasant was offered a chance to follow Head Coach Stan Heath to SEC powerhouse Arkansas. Pleasant, however, decided to remain at Kent State, only to be offered the head coaching job at ACU three months later.

Prior to joining the Kent State program, Pleasant served as an assistant coach at (NCAA Div. I) University of Tennessee-Martin (1999-2001) and (NCAA Div. II) Wayne State University (1998-1999). While at UT-Martin, he helped the Skyhawks qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. During his tenure at WSU, Pleasant helped lead the team to a 25-5 record, a top five ranking in the country, a conference championship and an NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen appearance. Pleasant completed his master’s degree in education in 1999 while coaching at UT-Martin.

Pleasant’s coaching career started at Lipscomb University where he served as a student as-sistant under legendary head coach Don Meyer, who reached 700 career victories faster than any other coach in the history of college basketball.

Before his coaching career, Pleasant played football in 1994 for Abilene Christian University (NCAA Div. II) under head coach Dr. Bob Strader. He graduated college from Lipscomb Uni-versity in 1998.

As a prep, Pleasant attended Waterford Kettering High School in Waterford, MI and played football for legendary high school football coach Mike Berry. He was a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection in football and was his team’s co-captain on the baseball, basketball and football teams. His 48 pass receptions in his senior year put him among the Top 10 in the state of Michigan.

Pleasant’s roots are planted deeply in Rochester College’s soil as his grandfather Lucien Palmer was a founding father. Dr. Palmer served as the first dean of the College and later served as president for eight years. His father, Garth Pleasant, served at Rochester College for nearly 40 years as the men’s basketball coach, as athletic director, and as a member of the

Pleasant also serves as the RC Athletic Director and Vice President of Enrollment. Enrollment (incoming classes) has increased by 70 percent since Pleasant took over the reins, and he has led the admissions recruiters to three straight record incoming classes while managing the recruiting process.

The Pleasant family experienced some personal struggles after moving back to Rochester Hills as Rachel survived a brain tumor and several surgeries. Rachel and Klint fre-quently travel to various places as they speak about their incredible journey. assistant coach, 2nd seasontomWEBBTom Webb enters his second year on the Rochester College Basketball staff after two seasons as an assistant coach for Purdue Calumet’s men’s basketball program. Webb played a crucial role in the PUC basketball program by heading up recruiting, film exchange and player development.

Webb is no stranger to the RC basketball program where he was a four-year player, helping the team to a record four 20-win seasons, including a school-record 25 victories in his senior campaign. Webb also helped the Warriors earn four-straight USCAA national tournament appearances, while serving as the team captain on the 2008-09 squad that advanced to the national championship game.

The young coach participated in a number of coaching clinics during his time at Rochester, regularly attending legendary mentor Don Meyer’s Coaching Clinic. He was also a part of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan clinics, working with high profile coaches such as John Belien, Hubie Brown, Jamie Dixon, Tom Izzo and Rick Majerus.

Webb graduated from Rochester College in 2009 with a degree in behavioral sciences. He currently resides in Auburn Hills, MI.

COACH PLEASANT ON TOM:

“I am thrilled that Tom is on our staff. He loves basketball and he loves Rochester College. Coach Webb pours his entire self into his job and is always trying to make our program better. I enjoyed watching him play in 2005–2009 because he played so hard and was selfless — he coaches the same way. Most importantly, he understands our program and school mission, and he is extremely loyal to both me and the program. His willingness to work hard and assist me is invaluable, and I appreciate all he does.”

assistant coach, 2nd seasonscottSAMUELSIn addition to his work in our basketball program, Scott Samuels serves as Director of Admissions and Assistant Athletic Director at RC. His main responsibility is working directly with the Admissions Recruiters and serves as their day to day manager. Scott also serves as the international recruiting coordinator, is the liaison for Admissions with Student Financial Services, and works directly with the VP of Admissions and Director of Athletics in creating the overall strategy for Admissions and Athletics.

Scott is no stranger to Rochester as he grew up in Clawson, MI. Scott’s family have been long time supporters of the College dating back to the school’s early years. Scott began his service at Rochester College in 2002 as he brought his strong business background to the classroom as a faculty member in the College of Business. Scott’s success in leading an employee fundraising campaign for the Athletic Center and his desire to work with prospective students led him out of the classroom and into the administration. Scott brings a wealth of experience to Rochester College as he spent 14 years in banking and investment. In addition to his responsibilities in banking, Scott also spent time as a personal financial advisor for professional athletes. Scott helped coach the RC men’s basketball team in 2004 and 2005 when the team won back to back National Championships. He graduated from Oklahoma Christian University in 1986 and went on to complete a Masters of Finance from Walsh College in 1996. Scott is married to Christie (Powers) and they have one son, Jacob Scott Samuels.

COACH PLEASANT ON SCOTT:

“Coach Samuels has become a very good friend of mine throughout the last seven years while at RC. He worked with the team back in 2004 and 2005 as part of my dad’s staff and I asked him to help again. He is invaluable when it comes to organizational duties. He helps with class checks, study sessions, travel plans, stats and budgetary issues. The guys enjoy being around him, and his positive attitude is infectious. I’m grateful he’s willing to help, and the work he does makes our program better. He is constantly putting the program first and his willingness to give of himself is much appreciated. Scott is a major part of the program’s success.”

If his voice goes out, he starts waving a towel. He is a master motivator. Beaudoin’s connection to the basketball program began during the 1983-1984 season, and it continued as his son, Dan, played on Rochester’s 1988 squad on his way to becoming college valedictorian. Beaudoin, who retired as lieutenant from the Madison Heights Fire Department in 1996, and his wife, Mary Ellen, are the parents of two other children and the grandparents of four.

COACH PLEASANT ON GEORGE:

“Coach George has been a part of our program since 1984 and is one of the finest individuals I have ever been around. He is a servant leader and will do anything for anyone. I think next to my father there is no one who has given as much to RC basketball as Coach George. He is an encourager and a motivator. Our guys love being around him, and his presence in practice and at games is invaluable. I was so excited to hear that he was still going to remain a part of the staff after my dad retired. I can’t imagine RC basketball without Coach George.“

PRESEASON OUTLOOK

The Rochester College Men’s basketball program is coming off another highly successful season featuring a 3-1 record versus nationally ranked or recognized NAIA opponents (7-1 vs. All NAIA), 5 highly competitive games versus NCAA Division I opponents, and a trip to the USCAA Division I National Championship game where the Warriors fell three points shy of the title.

The 2012-2013 Rochester College Warriors Men’s basketball team will look to continue its success with USCAA 1st team All-American Dramell Hogan (16 ppg) leading a cast of three returning starters that also include Brad Norman (8 ppg) and Sean Mattia (8 ppg). The Warriors expect to look internally to replace senior point guard Stephan Henning with returning junior Zef Deda. The Warriors have added an extremely talented recruiting class highlighted by 6’7” senior guard/forward, Drew Maynard; 6’5” junior guard, Stavros Schizas; 6’8” forward Jeroen De Baat; 6’11” center Erin Hopkins; and 5’9” floor general, Paris Pereira.

Maynard comes to RC via Oakland University (NCAA Division I) and Valdosta State University. As a freshman at Oakland, Maynard started 20 games while averaging 7 points per game for a Grizzly program that won 23 games. Last season at Valdosta State, Maynard averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game. Maynard is most known for his combination of size and explosive athletic ability.

Schizas comes to RC from Kirtland Community College. While at Kirtland, the junior utility player garnered two time All-Conference honors to go along with two time All-Defensive team and two time all MCCAA All-Star appearances after leading the Firebirds through two of their most successful seasons, averaging 14.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

De Baat comes to RC from Gravendeel, Netherlands, highly recommended by former colleagues and coaching friends of Coach Pleasant’s. As a mature freshman, De Baat will replace and again provide a defensive presence in the paint that was lost in the graduation of center Ricky Doran. De Baat’s toughness, size, and athletic ability will allow him to be an impact player immediately at RC.

Rounding out the Warriors recruiting class are incoming freshman Erin Hopkins and Paris Pereira. At 6’11”, Hopkins will add size to the Warrior’s frontcourt for years to come. Point guard Paris Pereira comes to RC fresh off leading a Rochester High School program to a record-breaking season. Pereira averaged 19.8 points, 4.8 assists, and 2 steals per game while leading Rochester High School through a 20-game win streak en route to a 20-2 finish.

The Warriors again will look to embark on one of the nation’s toughest schedules among small colleges. Getting an early season shot at Kent State University in an exhibition game before joining Eastern Michigan University’s tournament as the only non-Division I program. EMU’s tournament matches the Warriors up against Eastern Illinois University, Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne, Eastern Michigan University, and the University of Texas Pan-American. RC’s Division I schedule will be rounded out by cross town foe Oakland University and Horizon League favorite coming off of 2011-2012 NCAA tournament berth, University of Detroit Mercy. RC’s schedule will also include eight NAIA opponents featuring games against NAIA’s D2 power conference Crossroads League (formerly the MCC) very own Grace College and Bethel College.

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Dramell has blossomed into a very special player. He has an incred-ible knack to score and rebound. He is relentless in the paint and has also become very good on the perimeter too. But most importantly, he has embraced our programs values and is a ‘team first’ guy. It is a unique opportunity to have a player like Dramell in the program for five years (he redshirted in 2010-11) and his leadership, maturity and knowledge of the program will be major keys to any success we might have this year. He has worked on his game tirelessly the last two years and has made himself into an extremely good player. Dramell will leave a lasting impression on this program and we will be talking about him for years to come. Most importantly, we are excited to watch Dramell graduate. He is one of the most likeable students on campus!”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “We will rely on Sean’s leadership and selflessness all season long. Sean has been around for three years and knows our program inside and out. We will lean on him for stability and will ask him to help teach our younger guys all year long. He plays extremely hard and is very quick in the open floor. Sean is our best-conditioned athlete and loves to play. Sean put in a lot of work over the summer and just wants to win. He is coachable, he does many things well and he makes our team better. He has been a tremendous addition to our program over the last three years.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “I am thrilled that Drew has joined our program. I watched Drew play in HS and actually made calls to coaching friends to come watch him and recruit him! He has the chance to really help us during his senior year (after two years at the NCAA I level and one year at the NCAA II level). More than anything, I want to invest in him and help him have a memorable senior season. Drew is a very gifted player. He is as good an athlete as there is anywhere in the country, regardless of level and he also has perimeter skills at 6’7”. He has the ability to be a tough matchup as he can knock down open three’s and is both strong and quick while playing in the paint. Drew and I spent a lot of time over the summer discussing our program and what we are about. He has been great in the pre-season. He is playing hard and has bought into everything we have said. There is no question that Drew has the ability to really help us this year and can be one of the most electrifying players we have ever had.”

Coach Pleasant’s Thoughts: “Brad had an incredible junior season. I think he is one of the best three-point shooters we have had at RC, but Brad does so much more than hit open three’s. He is very good off the dribble and is one of the best defenders I have ever coached, regardless of level. Most importantly, Brad plays extremely hard and is the most selfless guy we have. He just wants to win and has the same attitude regardless of his personal stat line. There is no way to describe how hard he plays. He has become a very special person to me because he is someone I saw early on his sophomore season while playing JUCO, and I had a gut feeling that he would be a special player for us. I can’t imagine ever coaching another player that plays as hard as Brad and defends as well, while also being a knock down shooter. I am looking forward to coaching him another year and will be sad to see him go.”

garthPLEASANTathletic director, emeritus

Having Klint take over the RC basketball program is truly a dream come true. The program has always been a family affair for our family with Pat being the MVP, Kim being a cheerleader and Johnny being a player. Klint literally traveled to games with me since he was 4 years old.

One only needs to attend a practice to see that he is an outstanding coach. He will, without question, take the program to another level. I couldn’t be prouder of him. My dream now, though I will not be around to see it, is that in 30 years when Klint steps aside that one of my grandsons will take over the program, which would mean that Rochester College would have 100 years of Pleasant’s coaching.”

Athletic Director Emeratus and former Head Basketball Coach Garth Pleasant has been an active member of the Rochester College faculty since 1971. Born and raised in Flint, MI, Coach Pleasant attended Ainsworth High School and was a two-sport athlete in Baseball and Basketball.

Coach Pleasant started his college years at Rochester College in 1967 where he starred on the Men’s Basketball team. After he transferred to Libscomb University and graduated with a degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation, Coach Pleasant started teaching at Rochester College. He also took on several other roles at the college including Dean of Students, Coordinator of Housing, and Athletic Director all the while earning his Master’s Degree from Wayne State University.

In 1972, Coach Pleasant became the Head Basketball Coach at Rochester College. In his 38 years of coaching, Coach Pleasant won 720 games, four national championships, and was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame. He was also named the Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the year in 1989. Pleasant’s other honors include NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1994, and USCAA Coach of the Year in 2004.

Aside from coaching, Coach Pleasant was the minister at Lake Orion Church for 30 years and does public speaking to a wide variety of groups. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife Pat and his six grandchildren. Coach Pleasant is the father of RC head basketball coach Klint Pleasant, Rochester High School Head Basketball Coach Johnny Pleasant as well as the proud father of daughter Kim Speck.

RC BASKETBALL TEAM WORKS CLINIC FOR A CAUSEBLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich.- One aspect that Head Coach Klint Pleasant takes serious in his basketball program is giving back to the community. On Saturday, Sept. 22, the Warrior’s men’s basketball team did just that by helping at the 14th Annual Knights Basketball Coaching Academy, a clinic featuring big name basketball coaches with all proceeds going to Coaches vs. Cancer.

The one-day clinic featured three division one basketball coaches in Jeff Smith from Central Michigan University, John Beilein from the University of Michigan, and Jim Christian from Ohio University as well as Rochester College Head Coach Klint Pleasant. The RC basketball team was asked to do all the demonstrations for the event.

“I think the clinic is great because it always attracts quality speakers and is very well attended,” said Coach Pleasant. “It is impressive to have over 120 coaches in the stands on a Saturday afternoon during the football season. Paul Galbenski (Clinic organizer) does a great job and is always very organized. My assigned topic was, ‘Half Court Pressure Defense: Does it Still Work?’ Our guys did a great job with all the on court demonstrations.”

Coach Pleasant was happy to be alongside the NCAA DI coaches who attended. “I was happy to speak alongside one of my closest friends, Coach Jim Christian. Jim and I were assistants together at Kent State and then he went on to become one of the most successful head coaches in MAC history, then became the head coach at TCU and is now back at Ohio University taking over a program coming off a Sweet 16 run.”

The men’s basketball team worked the clinic from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Coach Pleasant canceled the next day Sunday practice in honor of the hardwork and efforts of his squad. “I thought our guys worked incredibly hard and represented our program in a first class way,” said Coach Pleasant.

With all the excitement of working with great coaches in front of a large group of distinguished high school coaches, Coach Pleasant was more interested in talking about the purpose of the clinic and how it hits home for him and his team. “I love the fact that all the proceeds go to Coaches vs. Cancer. All four speakers donated whatever per diem there would have been to the cause. I have a soft spot in my heart for that because of some of the things I have been through with my wife and, of course, so many of our guys have family that have suffered from that awful disease. I am thrilled that we could give back and we are happy to help anytime.”

With the 2012-13 season quickly approaching, the team headed to Lexington, MI for a team retreat to reflect and slow things down before the fast paced season starts.

ROCHESTER COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACH WINS COACH OF CHARACTER AWARD

In just one season, Rochester College Head Basketball coach Klint Pleasant has made his mark not only as a winning coach, but also as the leader of a team honored for its character on and off the court.

On June 1, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the governing body for approximately 350 small-college athletics programs in the United States, honored Pleasant as the Associa-tion of Independent Institutions 2012 NAIA Coach of Character.

The AII Conference, made up of 34 college institutions through-out the United States, honors one coach each year whose pro-gram displays the NAIA five core values: integrity, respect, re-sponsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

This honor carries extra value, as this past year was Rochester College’s first year in the NAIA and AII.

“This award is humbling,” Pleasant said. “I had no idea. I am grateful for the nomination as well as being recognized from this association. I hope this will solidify our standing with the NAIA moving forward and bring some recognition to Rochester Col-lege.”

Sean Mattia, a student-athlete at Rochester College and point guard who helped nominated Pleasant, said, “The amount of work Coach Pleasant puts in to build up our character on and off the court is absolutely incredible. He emphasizes each day that not only does he want us to be the best player on the court but he emphasizes how he thrives on us being the best friend, son, brother and student we can possibly be. Not only does he coach basketball, he coaches life.”

The award has shared meaning with Rochester College President Rubel Shelly. “This award means that Rochester College is being true to its mission,” Shelly said. “We have promised to provide for the intellectual, social and athletic development of the men and women who attend here in a Christian environment. Klint

and his staff in are following through on that promise. The award is certainly an honor for Coach Pleasant at a personal level. It is also and affirmation of everything we are doing as a Christian college.”

Sticking to the mission of Rochester College has not been a tough task for Coach Pleasant as it is “the way” for him and his coaching staff. “The mission of Rochester College stands for all the things that end up making a team great like unselfishness, discipline, being on time, and giving your best. These are things we stand for,” said Coach Pleasant.

Taking over for his father, Garth Pleasant, Coach Pleasant stated that he simply followed the blue print his dad had left. “We just kept doing the same things my dad did for 38 years,” he said. “The important thing has been the kind of student-athletes that we have recruited, guys who fit the personality and mission of the college. When these guys get here, we simply focus on the things that we think are important like servant leadership, leav-ing the locker room cleaner than how we found it, the way we act in restaurants and hotels, the way we act before and after a game. These are things that we are always talking about and are always emphasizing.

“This is an award for our team and for our guys and for the other coaches too, because they all have embraced the Champions of Character attitude,” Pleasant said.
