LISTLIST

Mercy Health Foundation Springfield Communities Dear Friends of MercyDear Friends,

Welcome to the FY 2015, which ended June 30, 2015, Annual Report of the Springfield Communities Foundations. On behalf of the leadership and boards of Aurora/Cassville, Berryville, Lebanon, Mountain View and Springfield, I want to thank you for your generous support.

Your financial support enables us to carry out the mission “to bring to life the healing ministry of Jesus through our compassionate care and exceptional service” in each of our communities. Whether helping us purchase equipment, support health care programs or construct new buildings, your gift has made a lasting impact on the patients we serve as well as our communities.

Our co-workers in our hospitals and clinics are amazing! They not only give their time and talent each and every day, they give financially through Mercy Way. This past year, our co-workers in this region raised more than $533,255.

Our auxiliaries are outstanding. They donate thousands of hours to care for those we serve, as well as raise financial support through the gift shops and other fundraisers throughout the year.

This last year we launched a new program, Mercy Legacy Society, to recognize individuals who name our foundations in their estate plans. This type of giving is truly leaving a legacy for hospitals to continue providing excellent health care services in our communities. Many of our foundations were started with generous gifts from individuals who named Mercy as beneficiary in their estate plan.

As you read through this annual report, know that your gift matters and has an impact on the patients, families and communities we serve.

Thank you again for your generous giving to Mercy.

Sincerely,

Jim BarberChief Operating Officer, Regional Vice PresidentMercy Health Foundation

Mercy Health Foundation Springfield Dear Friends of MercyThank you for your support of Mercy Health Foundation. In fiscal year 2015, we were privileged to host several openings as a result of your contributions.Mercy was founded as a ministry that cares for children, a tradition that continues today. We take community partnerships very seriously, so during the planning and development of Mercy Kids, we involved several community focus groups. The call of our Springfield communities was clear: “Take care of our children.” Mercy answered. The east wing of the hospital was designated for Mercy Kids, complete with its own entrance and playful environment to appeal to our younger patients. The new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provided 46 beds that allow our tiniest patients to be with their family in a private setting. These areas let parents work alongside the medical staff caring for their baby. The Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center, a St. Jude Affiliate Clinic, treated its 700th patient. This means that patients and their families were able to stay close to home while receiving treatment. Mercy Kids plans include reconstructing the 5th floor for pediatric patient rooms as well as a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). A generous gift allowed an earlier-than-planned start of construction for a designated labor and delivery welcome center. Helping Hands Funds ensured that our financially challenged patients left Mercy with resources and support to assist in their continued health progress. For example, the NICU Helping Hands Fund allows infants to leave with a specifically developed wedge that holds them in place after feeding, which aids their underdeveloped digestive systems. Those same infants and others may also need special bottles, monitors, car seats, etc. A Pediatric Helping Hands Fund is in place to assist young patients and their families when they come to Mercy for treatment. We hope to create additional Helping Hands Funds for other departments with identified patient needs. Also this past year, Mercy Health Foundation, with the help of the J. F. Johnson and Charles and Angelina Sansone Endowments, awarded scholarships to 208 nursing students attending the Mercy College of Nursing. The professional and compassionate care offered by Mercy nursing staff mirrors the vision of our foundress, Catherine McAuley. Health care organizations are facing greater challenges than ever before and Mercy is no exception. Planned capital projects will rely more upon philanthropic support to come to fruition. We sincerely thank all our donors for your confidence and your investment in Mercy, and we encourage you to be strong advocates in our mission to continue to bring the highest level of health care to the families, friends and communities we are honored to serve. Sincerely,

Springfield Endowment FundsAn endowment fund is restricted. Only the interest from the fund can be spent, not the principal that anchors the endowment. Stability is the main reason to have an endowment and it can be enormously comforting for donors, too… the idea that Mercy continues to plan for the future and be around for a long time. An endowment offers donors the option of providing a gift that will keep giving well into the future.

Funds have been named due to the generous support from donors. On going gifts from individual donors and estate gifts add to the endowment and therefore benefit more patients.

Chester Norback Scholarship Fund, also known as the College of Nursing Scholarship Fund, provides tuition support to students pursuing a degree in nursing through Southwest Baptist University. The award is given to incoming students with the highest ACT/SAT scores per nursing class (fall and spring).

J.F. Johnson Estate Fund for Nursing Scholarships, named in honor of J.F. Johnson’s estate gift, supports nursing students pursuing ASN, BSN, or MSN degrees.

Charles and Angelina Sansone Fund, named by D. Bunch Sansone in honor of his parents. The endowment supports nursing education and uncompensated care.

C.H. “Chub” O’Reilly Cancer Center Fund, created by the family of Chub O’Reilly, provides non-medical support for oncology patients.

Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center Endowment, created with a gift from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, honors Jane. The endowment supports the non-medical needs of pediatric oncology patients receiving treatment in the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center.

Jane Pitt Pediatric Oncology – Medical Director Endowment, created through a gift from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. This endowment supports the salary of the medical director serving in the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center.

Kids and Families Benefit from Donor’s DedicationBobby Allison has an immeasurable passion for taking care of kids, and Mercy Hospital Springfield has benefited from that passion. Bobby shares his talents and treasures with our pediatric patients and their families, and through his generosity, he is changing lives.

Dr. Melinda Slack, Medical Director for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), along with her team of highly skilled nurses and Mercy leaders, spent years planning improvements to the NICU. Dr. Slack traveled to many hospitals in the U.S., learning what worked and discovering best practices.

Meanwhile, Mercy worked closely with families who had experienced the old NICU, asking them what changes were needed to ensure that the new level-one NICU could provide state-of-the-art health care in the most family friendly environment.

Bobby’s passion took hold after only a short tour of the old NICU and a glimpse of Dr. Slack’s vision for a new one. Thanks to Bobby, the vision became a reality; the new NICU is more than 35,000 square feet, compared to the old 8,500 square feet, and delivers superior health care to Mercy’s tiniest patients and their families.

“Mr. Allison embraced our plans for the NICU from the beginning. His gift has given us amazing health care technology, that, combined with Mercy’s compassionate care, allows us to save infants’ lives and serve local families every day,” said Dr. Slack. “We couldn’t be more grateful.”

Bobby has also provided a very special garden for young patients and their families: The Betty and

Bobby Allison Children’s Garden. Named in honor of Betty Allison, Bobby’s mother, this beautiful space is located just outside the entrance to Mercy Kids. It is a play space for children, a green spot in which to contemplate difficult medical decisions, a place for parents to ponder the miracle of birth, an oasis in which patients can enjoy fresh air, and so much more.

At night, white lights in the ground illuminate the space with a peaceful glow. “This is such a comforting spot. Everyone loves it,” said Jennifer Murray, NICU Nursing Manager. “It makes people happy.”

Bobby Allison, however, seems to be the happiest of all. He said, “I get so much more pleasure back from this than I give.”

Bobby Allison seated with children who enjoyed playing in the Betty and Bobby Allison Children’s Garden.

Mercy Legacy Society a Meaningful Way to GivePediatrician Dr. Elizabeth Andrews wants to issue an invitation. “Establishing this gift for Mercy has been something that I have found very meaningful and that has brought me great joy. I hope I can inspire others with my experience,” Dr. Andrews said.

A good friend brought up the concept of “Legacy Gifting,” or the act of setting aside a portion of one’s estate to benefit a particular charity, with Dr. Andrews a few years ago. “She was speaking generally about legacy giving, but the idea caught my attention,” Dr. Andrews added.

Dr. Andrews believes that with God-given gifts, one has a responsibility to see that they are passed on to others. Fifteen years ago,

when she first discussed estate planning with her attorney, her focus was making sure that her young children would be cared for if anything happened to her.

Now, with one son graduating from college and one from law school this year, Dr. Andrew’s plans have changed. Though Mercy has come a long way in the past 30 years, Dr. Andrews knows that there are always facilities and programs that can grow – and they’ll depend on charitable contributions to do so. When she revisited her attorney recently, Dr. Andrews made sure that a portion of her estate was set aside to benefit Mercy Kids Springfield.

“My passion is bringing pediatric specialty care to the children of southwest

Missouri and continuing to grow our Mercy Kids Springfield, so that is where I have directed my gift; you may have other areas of interest. As a health care ministry, Mercy has needs in many different areas of care,” Dr. Andrews said.

She concluded, “I am a proud member of the Mercy Legacy Society. Consider joining me!”

For more information, please contact our office at 417-820-6111.

Create a lasting legacy and be an integral part of our future by including a charitable gift within your overall estate and financial plans. Legacy gifts allow you to support Mercy’s health care programs far into the future, as well as provide tax-related benefits to you.

Mercy Kids Pro-Am Golf Tournament

Rock Your Seatbelt Campaign

The Mercy Kids Pro-Am Golf Tournament raised $94,250! All proceeds from our course sponsorship benefit Mercy Kids, making a difference in the lives of children and families in southwest Missouri and northern Arkansas.

The generous support of the Mercy Pro-Am donors help us expand our services for our young patients at Mercy Kids. For example, the Pediatric Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) have outgrown their space, and expansion of this unit will help us better serve our patients and community.

Mercy Kids Springfield is home to more than

20 pediatric specialists whose areas of expertise include everything from hematology and oncology to neurosurgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, behavioral health, psychiatry and more.

The 2015 Mercy Pro-Am was held on Monday, August 10.

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of teen death in the United States. In Missouri there were 766 motor vehicle deaths in 2014; 63% of those killed were not wearing a seatbelt.

Through the Kohl’s grant, Mercy received $53,541 to support the Rock Your Seatbelt Campaign. This campaign is designed to help keep teens safe while on the road. As a part of a culture change, we want to ensure that all drivers – parents and teens alike – are not only wearing

their seatbelts, they’re checking to make sure their passengers are wearing seat belts. Everyone in the car needs to buckle up!

To date, Kohl’s has donated more that $479,176 to Mercy’s efforts focusing on injury prevention.

Auxiliary Raises Funds for a Variety of InitiativesFor more than 50 years, Auxiliary volunteers have routinely supported more than $6.4 million of Mercy hospital initiatives. The tradition of giving continues today with Auxiliary’s recent contributions, which completed the Family Resource Center within Mercy Kids, the Cancer Resource Center within the C.H. “Chub” O’Reilly Cancer Center, and provided needed funding to renovate the Mercy Child Care Center.

Over the years, Mercy Auxiliary-Springfield has assisted with multiple building renovations; the purchase of ambulances and shuttles; the Hugs and Kisses newborn security system; birthing beds; and aesthetic features such as the recently completed gardens at Mercy Kids. The gifts are a result of proceeds raised in the Mercy gift shop as well as jewelry and craft fairs.

“There is no ‘I’ in team – it takes all of us to make Mercy Hospital Springfield one of the best,” said Debbie Tangora, Auxiliary President. “It’s our honor and privilege to be part of giving to the patients and the hospital.”

Mercy Health Foundation Aurora/Cassville Dear Friends of MercyAs I reflect on the charitable activities that occurred in the Aurora and Cassville Hospitals during the past year, I see that we have many reasons to celebrate. During last year’s Summer Food Drive, co-worker teams at Aurora and Cassville competed to contribute food items to our local food pantries. A total of 6,226 pounds of food were donated! Additionally, the hospitals pledged a 20¢ per-pound match for all of the food donated, resulting in an additional cash donation of $1,245. The food and matching funds helped to meet the needs of hungry children within our communities. As part of the annual Aurora Summer Come & Dine Program, the management team and co-workers of the Aurora Hospital prepared and served a meal to 419 members of our community on August 4th, 2014. During our Household Items Drive last year, our Aurora and Cassville co-workers donated 1,662 items to our community. These included cleaning supplies, baby care items, personal hygiene supplies, and paper goods.

Last year 101 co-workers contributed a total of $16,346 to our annual Mercy Way Campaign. These donations provided funding for several scholarships and local projects.

Our communities continue to show their support of our mission through numerous gifts that have been made to our facilities. I encourage you to read about the kindness and generosity of one of our local donors, Kenneth Gillig, in the feature story of this annual report. Additionally, we have received a very warm response to our recent Helping Hands Fund campaign. Helping Hands is a new initiative to provide much-needed non-medical support to our patients in need. So far more than $250 has been contributed by donors from the Aurora and Cassville communities.

Our Hospital Auxiliaries represent an important link to our communities. They work diligently throughout the year to raise funds for various projects. In recent years, the Cassville Auxiliary purchased wheelchairs and exercise equipment; provided funding for community scholarships; tuition assistance for co-workers and a donation to the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. The Aurora Auxiliary, in recent years, has provided funding for a digital mammography machine, community scholarships, the Mercy Mission fund to help patients with specific needs, and a donation to the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. The Aurora Auxiliary is currently finalizing the details for a future donation that will assist with current equipment needs of the hospital.

I find the kindness and generosity of our co-workers and volunteers and the residents of our local communities to be a source of inspiration. Without your support, it would be impossible for our hospitals to carry out our mission.

With sincere appreciation,

Douglas M. StroemelPresident, Mercy Hospitals Aurora and Cassville

Getting Healthier with Help from Friends

Making a difference in the lives of others is something Mr. Kenneth Gillig has done for Mercy many times over. He supported Mercy Kids, Mercy’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Helping Hands Fund to assist patients in need, and most recently, made a gift to benefit the Aurora Cardiac Rehab program.

Mr. Gillig’s recent gift of a T5 NuStep machine was given to the Cardiac Rehab Department in honor of his grandson. The machines are popular with patients because they provide a low impact, total-body cardiovascular and strengthening workout. The T5 model features accessibility through its step-through design, various resistance levels, and workout programs. “The machines are in high demand, and many times patients will wait until one is available,” said Chris Hoge, Director of Rehabilitation Services for Aurora and Cassville.

“I started cardio rehab after my forty-plus day stay at Mercy Hospital in Springfield. It was difficult at first, but I could tell very soon that it was making me stronger. I also made lots of new friends while working out. There were always people waiting to use certain machines, so I decided to help the hospital buy another one,” said Kenneth Gillig. “Once Medicare no longer paid for my rehab, I stopped going, but my friends got worried and started calling me to make sure I was ok… so I decided I needed to continue rehab. I go three times a week to enjoy better health and my new friends.”

Support from Mr. Gillig and others in the community is important to the hospital. Health care organizations are facing greater challenges than before, and Mercy is no exception. Many times, capital projects, including the replacement of equipment, must be put on hold.

“We are very grateful for the donations we receive from individuals like Mr. Gillig. Community support plays a very important role as we strive to meet the needs of our patients,” said Doug Stroemel, President of Mercy Hospitals Aurora and Cassville.

Mercy Health Foundation Berryville Dear Friends of MercyOn behalf of Mercy Health Foundation Berryville Board of Directors, physicians and staff, I sincerely thank you for helping us stay at the forefront of medical technology and care. You help us deliver exceptional Mercy care and signature service to all of our patients in Carroll County and beyond; we are forever grateful for your support!

After a successful $250,000 capital campaign to renovate inpatient rooms at our facility was completed in 2012; an invaluable piece of equipment for use in Ear, Nose and Throat surgical procedures was purchased in 2013. This ENT nerve monitor helped bring cochlear implant surgeries to Berryville, and our location remains one of only two places in Arkansas where these advanced procedures are done. Gracious donors like you carried our momentum into 2014 by supporting the 11th Annual Mercy Health Foundation Charity Ball at record levels. Over $56,000 was raised to purchase new monitors for our patients recovering from surgery. Due to your generosity, these state-of-the-art monitors are in use today. The continuing improvements to our facility – and our care – are impossible without your generosity. The future is bright at Mercy Hospital Berryville, due in part to the philanthropic support of our friends and neighbors.

Thank you so very much for all you have done and all you continue to do.

Mercy Charity Ball Raises the Bar – Again

When it comes to generosity, the Berryville community has outdone itself. For the third year in a row, Mercy Hospital Berryville’s Black and White Charity Ball set a fundraising record.

“We had the highest attendance, the most sponsorships and the most dollars ever raised,” said Cody Qualls, Executive Director of Mercy Health Foundation Berryville. This year’s donors raised nearly $64,000, up from $56,000 in 2014.

“Once again, the support from the community has been tremendous,” Qualls added. “I couldn’t ask for a better outcome.”

The 12th annual event was held at the Inn of the Ozarks in Eureka Springs on February 21. Through private donations,

sponsorships, and silent and live auctions, donors pulled together $63,716; individual donations totaled $20,000. Thirty-four sponsors generated $22,000, which is an increase of $5,500 over the 2014 event.

Premier sponsors at the 2015 Black and White Charity Ball included: Shelter Insurance, Richard and Mary Lou Harp, agents; State Farm Insurance, Derek Bell, agent; Anstaff Bank; Arvest Bank of Eureka Springs and Berryville; Barrows Excavation; First National Bank of North Arkansas; Tyson Foods of Berryville and Green Forest; Thurman and Flanagin, Attorneys at Law; and Northwest Arkansas Pathology Associates.

Attendees at the February 21 event were treated to dinner,

live entertainment by local band “Red Ambition,” as well as a presentation by Mercy Health Foundation Board Chairman Bobby Thurman.

Fourteen Mercy physicians were in attendance, including Mercy Hospital Berryville’s Dr. Janet Shapter, who spoke about the importance of Stryker stretchers. “Funds from this year’s gala will pay for at least a half dozen of the stretchers,” Qualls said. “They’re becoming a standard of care and will greatly improve patient care in our emergency department.”

Qualls could not be happier with the results of the event. “I try to set a far-fetched goal every year, but then we hit it. We’re clearly blessed to be surrounded by such a generous community.”

Annual event raises nearly $64,000

Cochlear Implant Surgery Restores Local Man’s HearingBig-city surgery comes to small-town ArkansasWhen Michael Rissler talks on the telephone he doesn’t hold the receiver to his ear. He holds it to his head so his cochlear implant can do the hearing for him.

Michael received the implant in late 2013 at Mercy Hospital Berryville after struggling for decades with deteriorating hearing. He’d gone almost a year without any hearing at all. “I couldn’t even hear myself,” he explained. “People had to write things on paper for me.”

Hearing aids could no longer help. His audiologist, Dr. Tony Asay with Sound Advice Hearing Doctors in Harrison, told him there was one possible solution. “I conducted audiologic testing to make sure he was a candidate for a cochlear implant, and he was,” said Dr. Asay.

Cochlear implants are surgically-implanted devices that stimulate the hearing nerve. They aren’t like hearing aids, which simply make sounds louder.

Without his hearing, Michael was becoming increasingly isolated. “He couldn’t conduct any business by himself, like shopping,” said his

wife, Anita. “He couldn’t go to social events.” Most importantly, he could no longer hear his daughter’s voice when she called home from out of state. “I think that’s what convinced him to have the surgery,” Anita said.

It also helped that Michael didn’t have to travel far for the procedure, which is often only available at larger hospitals. Dr. Scott Estrem, who’s been performing cochlear implant surgery since 1986, had just begun practicing down the road at Mercy Hospital Berryville. “Michael was excited about the possibilities of the implantation, but I could tell he wasn’t quite convinced it would work for him,” explained Dr. Estrem.

Still, he went through with it. Doctors let him heal for four weeks after the surgery then everyone gathered in Dr. Asay’s office to activate the device. “I heard a mechanical beeping then heard people in the room,” said Michael. “At first it sounded like they were on helium. I was in shock. I didn’t think it would work.”

While thousands of patients across the country get cochlear implants each year, most have to travel to find doctors with experience. That isn’t the case in Northwest Arkansas anymore. “This is an example of how important

specialists are in a rural hospital as they bring newer advances and technology to patients who might not have been aware of all their options,” Dr. Estrem said.

Proceeds from the 2013 Mercy Health Foundation Black and White Charity Ball were used to purchase a special nerve monitor for use in surgery by Dr. Estrem, allowing his practice to begin to offer the procedure in Berryville.

Michael jokes that he asked Dr. Estrem for a “wife filter,” but he and Anita agree the surgery has changed their lives for the better. “I can go to the store and the bank, which I couldn’t do before,” Michael said. “I’m also a Mercy Auxiliary member, and my volunteer work at the thrift store is much easier now. I’d tell anyone who’s a candidate to do this. There was very minimal pain with the surgery and it’s amazing to be able to hear the sounds of nature again, like wind, rain and birds.”

Mercy Health Foundation Lebanon/Rolla Dear Friends of MercyOn behalf of the entire Mercy Health Foundation Board of Directors, our most sincere thanks for your thoughtful and generous donation to the great projects and programs here at Mercy Lebanon. When you reflect back on the progress health care has made in the city of Lebanon, it’s absolutely incredible. Louise G. Wallace gave to make a hospital possible in Lebanon. The Breechs gave even more to enhance the hospital and expand services. There were some dark days financially for the old hospital here in Lebanon. The Lebanon hospital began a relationship with the Sisters of Mercy and in 1999, our new hospital opened just off I-44. On the day of the grand opening of the then St. John’s Hospital, 8,000 guests attended that celebration. What a wonderful reminder of the incredible community support for our hospital. That support from the community has run for literally decades. When you fast-forward to the last decade, we have so much to be thankful for.

We’re thankful for the many generous donors that have made the expansion of the Emergency Department possible. An additional wing of the medical-surgical area was made possible where Mercy Lebanon now has the latest technology in our eICU. Mercy Lebanon also is thankful to now have equipment like digital mammography and the Bioness system. Of course, the constant reminder of the generosity of the community is seen through our Curry Cancer Center. Patients no longer have to travel to other communities for chemotherapy or visit to their oncologist. We are grateful for your helping hands and giving hearts. The future is bright. We are hopeful that the next decade provides even more blessings for our patients and their loved ones.

Mercy Health Foundation Lebanon Recognizes Donors

A decade of giving can go a long way. During that time, donors helped add nearly 20,000 square feet of additional space to Mercy Hospital Lebanon. That’s a lot of brick and mortar – and it’s supported by the strongest of foundations: the community.

To thank the helping hands and giving hearts, Mercy Health Foundation Lebanon hosted a special, complimentary breakfast on Friday, November 14. Among the honored guests were Travis Lynch, Alee Becker, Dr. Dennis Hite, the Mercy Lebanon Auxiliary, Laclede Electric and many more who’ve

funded a variety of projects across the hospital.

“At Mercy, we’re so fortunate to have so many folks step forward and truly give from the heart,” said Karen Simpson-Neasby, vice president of Mercy Health Foundation. “Thanks to the generous donations of folks from across our community, we have seen dreams become a reality.”

At the donor breakfast, the Mercy Lebanon Auxiliary made a pledge payment of $10,000 toward the hospital’s chapel project; that’s part of a $100,000 pledge earlier this year. The City of Lebanon, which accepted Alee Becker’s cancer fundraising

challenge, had a check of its own to present, in the amount of $6,001.

Since 2008, donors have paved the way for the Curry Cancer Center, doubled the hospital’s emergency room size and helped expand a medical surgical unit, which brought specialty care rooms for pediatric, bariatric and end-of-life patients. “We also wouldn’t have advanced technology like the Bioness or digital mammography, and the list goes on and on,” added Simpson-Neasby. “This special time gave us the opportunity to reflect on the amazing projects and express our heartfelt gratitude to those that gave so generously.”

Family Pays It Forward Through “Team Anita” Fund Anita Lynch lost her cancer battle, but won the hearts of many.

Anita Lynch had an unforgettable smile. You could say it’s still shining bright on a community forever changed by her selflessness. “She was the strongest and most caring person ever,” family friend Tricia Knapp said confidently. “Anita was always so positive and refused to throw in the towel. When it was time for her to leave us, we didn’t realize just how bad she was.”

In April 2011, Anita was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. The 37-year-old mother of three knew a lot about cancer, having been a big part of Relay for Life in Rolla, Missouri, so she was prepared to beat it. Despite the grim report, Anita’s smile shined even brighter.

“Even when she was at her sickest and you needed something, Anita was there for me,” said Rachel Allison, a family friend. “I have never met a more generous person. If there was a cause, she’d help, even if it wasn’t that much and even if she wasn’t feeling well. You couldn’t tell she was struggling at all.”

“People would ask her how she was feeling, to get her to unload,” recalled Travis Lynch, Anita’s husband. “But she’d turn the tables and ask what was going on with them and talk about their problems.” Anita’s problems, on the other hand, were quietly stacking up. Following a mastectomy, surgeons in Columbia, Missouri, soon removed all the lymph nodes on her left side. “Twenty-seven of 30 had cancer in them,” Lynch said. “Doctors could only go so far to the chest bone. There was still cancer.”

Anita endured 33 rounds of radiation in Rolla and traveled to and from Columbia for chemotherapy, hormone therapy and a surgery to remove her ovaries. “Sometimes it was nice to get in the car and have some down time, but there was a lot of stopping along the road and we felt every bump. It wasn’t easy,” Lynch explained.

The Rolla community couldn’t help but notice the Lynch family’s walls were closing in. “Anita was a stay-at-home mom who taught Sunday school,” Allison recalled. “When

she was ill, the church asked if I could take over, but there’s no way anyone could fill her shoes. No one wanted to teach at that hour, which is why Anita had once stood up. She was also involved in Mothers Helping Other Mothers group meetings.”

Anita began to realize it was time to step aside. Her friends and family, however, never wavered. “Even strangers would bring us meals and gift cards, share their story, or Facebook would explode with their inspirational messages,” Lynch said, grinning. “You can’t start feeling sorry for yourself when everybody is behind you, pumping you up.” For at least six months at a time, members of the group called Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) would provide the Lynches with meals several days a week. “After they stopped, her Relay for Life team carried it on for months. Then the church would step in,” Lynch continued. “Because of the community, it allowed us to focus on the kids and have some sort of normalcy.”

In October 2013, Anita’s health took a sharp turn

for the worse. “They found a spot on her liver and started oral chemotherapy,” Lynch recalled. “She got really bad while we were waiting to see if the drug was working, and we knew it was time for a second opinion.” The couple traveled to St. Louis where doctors started Anita on weekly chemotherapy – and more back-and-forth trips ensued. “Anita was really showing some progress, but it only helped for about five months. Her liver numbers deteriorated.”

A harsh winter found the couple stuck in Rolla on multiple occasions on appointment days, so they turned to Mercy Clinic Family Medicine in Rolla. “We coordinated with our doctor to see Dr. Ali at Mercy. We assumed he’d wave us through, but he didn’t just do the routine; he went through her whole history. He looked at everything and gave his time, coordinating with the cancer center in St. Louis. One thing we liked when we came to Mercy was the faith-based nature. It kept us strong. But as Anita was trying the last chemo drug, her body just couldn’t keep up the fight.”

The next step was hospice. “She wouldn’t have anything to do with it,” added Lynch. “In her mind she was always going to beat it. But she started swelling because of the liver cancer. She was becoming uncomfortable and in pain, so we called the nurses to the house, where they stood beside us for Anita’s last days.” She was surrounded by her family when she passed, peacefully, leaving behind her trademark. “I asked through my prayers that God would let her show us she was okay. After she passed, just moments after we all hugged, we turned to look at Anita. She had a huge smile on her face that was not there before, during or after she passed. There was no mistaking that it was our first miracle.”

The miracles continued. Through two separate fundraisers, family and friends raised tens of thousands of dollars in Anita’s honor. “It was unbelievable,” added Lynch. “Local businesses sponsored golf outings and fundraisers with very generous donations. T-shirts were made and a silent auction raised an incredible amount of money. So I went to the bank and set up a memorial fund to give back – because this is her legacy.”

“You reap what you sow,” added Allison. “That plays

a big part in why we want to pay it forward. Everyone wants to give back, having been blessed to know and love Anita. And I can tell you it will be continuing. We’re planning yard sales, t-shirt sales and bake sales. We’re even hoping to repeat those successful fundraisers.”

“We were blessed beyond what we deserved,” said Lynch. “I know there are a lot of people who never have that in their life, or struggle through this horrible disease by themselves. We can help change that.”

In the spring, Lynch reached out to Mercy Health Foundation to donate $15,000 in Anita’s honor. The money will help Mercy provide Rolla cancer patients with wigs, nutritional assistance and transportation – things many people cannot afford due to health care costs. It also paid for a special bell. “When Mercy patients finish chemo, they will ring that bell as a symbol of accomplishment and victory, which is what Anita would have wanted to see,” said Karen Simpson-Neasby, vice president of Mercy Health Foundation. “Travis and his family were the very first to ring the bell, and I’m sure Anita was smiling down on them.”

Fifty years. For many, it’s almost a lifetime; but for one Ozarks doctor, it’s a legacy. Mercy’s Dr. Dennis Hite reached that medical milestone this year, but to truly measure his commitment to the Lebanon community, you have to look beyond the calendar.

Dr. Hite and 17 fellow classmates recently returned to their alma mater, the University of Missouri School of Medicine, to finally receive honorary white coats, symbolizing a half-century of practicing medicine. “As students, we never got to wear them,” recalled Dr. Hite. “They represent professor status or a position of merit, so it was a wonderful gesture and a fantastic evening.” The special alumni banquet in Columbia, Missouri, was part of Mizzou’s homecoming celebration, complete with special treatment for the honorees.

“In 1964, about 100 of us graduated together and went on to practice medicine,” said Dr. Hite, who spent his first two years in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “I started with a rotating internship, and then moved on to general surgery.” By 1966, Dr. Hite had moved his practice to Lebanon, Missouri, to become a jack of all trades. “It was Wallace Hospital back then. Forty-

eight years ago, there were few, if any, specialists. So as a general practitioner I worked the emergency room, did surgery, fixed broken bones and even delivered babies.”

And as you can imagine, the filing system was filled with actual files. “We used to keep our office records on a little card, about five inches by eight inches,” said Dr. Hite. “We didn’t have the advanced software used today, I’ll tell you that!”

What began as a team of eight doctors slowly grew into a large system of care, joining Mercy in the 1990’s. “Dr. Hite has offered me so many opportunities to learn,” said Sarah Lane, a certified medical assistant who has worked alongside Dr. Hite since 1991. “When I started, he was very hands-on and checked my progress as I’d work with patients, asking me questions to test my knowledge. Nothing got past him – and it was quite intimidating at first.”

Decade after decade, Dr. Hite’s popularity grew – especially with Ozarks natives. “We’re not far from Bennett Springs State Park, so you can imagine how many fish hooks he’s removed from patients’ fingers or arms,” laughed Lane. “It’s fascinating to watch him because he’s so professional and precise.”

Dr. Hite’s generosity reached beyond the walls at Mercy – literally. In 2008, he and his wife, Deanna, donated $15,000 to Mercy Hospital Lebanon to expand the hospital’s emergency room and medical surgical unit, and build the Curry Cancer Center. Most recently, the Hite family made a $25,000 donation to build a new chapel at the hospital.

“We are so appreciative of Dr. Hite and his family,” said Karen Simpson-Neasby, vice president of Mercy Health Foundation. “Our spiritual lives are just as important as our physical lives, and their generosity just exemplifies that.”

“My thing has always been to help this community,” said Dr. Hite, who is no stranger to mission trips and volunteering. In November, Dr. Hite was inducted into the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce’s Wall of Honor, a designation for those who are considered pillars in the community. “It’s what doctors should do. It’s what people should do. I think the chapel is a thing that will live long after me, and even the memory of me. I hope it will still be here when the name Dennis Hite is forgotten.”

In the meantime, Dr. Hite continues to see new patients at Mercy Clinic Family Medicine - Lebanon. “He’s just so well known,” said Lane. “Everyone speaks so highly of his care and compassion. We’re so close, I even joked that I’d need alimony starting the day he leaves. He got a kick out of that!”

Now in semi-retirement, Dr. Hite has a front row seat to watch his legacy grow. His daughter, a pediatrician in Columbia, was voted by her community as best doctor in town. “And my grandson is pre-med,” added Dr. Hite. “I was so proud when he received the Mercy Health Foundation scholarship.” Being a recipient ensures Dr. Hite’s grandson will return to Lebanon to practice upon graduation. And he’ll likely hear these words of encouragement from his grandfather: “It’s hard, both emotionally and physically, but if you do it, and you love it, then you’re going to have a world of wonderful relationships with people. Then go home at night and say, ‘Well, I did some good today.’ You might be able to change the world a little bit.”

Dear Friends of Mercy

In 1956, responding to a call for help from Father Sylvester Bauer of West Plains, six Sisters arrived in Mountain View on a mission to reopen the local hospital and provide compassionate medical care to the community. Through the commitment of Sr. M. Cornelia Blasko and the other Sisters of St. Francis, compassionate care continues to this day.

After a partnership began with the Sisters of Mercy, the great mission of Mercy continues today, “As the Sisters of Mercy before us, we bring to life the healing ministry of Jesus through our compassionate care and exceptional service.” We couldn’t carry on that great legacy of compassionate care and exceptional service without donations from citizens across Mountain View and the surrounding communities. You have been a part of a great legacy of giving that has enhanced the health care in this great community.

We look forward to continuing the legacy together. We thank you for your past support and look forward to your continued support.

Co-workers from Mercy St. Francis present Sheri Noble, Good Samaritan Care Clinic manager, and Dr. Jon Roberts, physician, a donation for $5,000. The funds were raised through bi-weekly payroll deductions through Mercy Way.

Mercy Co-workers Donate to Good Samaritan Care Clinic Helping others is the Mercy way. For the last two years, co-workers at Mercy St. Francis Hospital have generously donated to the annual MercyWay campaign; now they’re putting those funds to good use.

On Monday, September 15, co-workers presented a $5,000 check to the Good Samaritan Care Clinic. Over the last decade, volunteers at that clinic have provided much-needed medical and dental services to the uninsured.

“These funds will provide medical and dental services to those who simply can’t afford them,” said Sheri Noble, clinic administrator; she’s one of three part-time staff members. “We will be able to buy dental supplies and equipment, as well as pharmaceuticals.”

The Good Samaritan Care Clinic is funded by Mercy Health Foundation, Missouri Foundation for Health, and several churches and community members. It launched in February 2004; its first facility was a home donated by Mercy St. Francis Hospital. After providing services to hundreds of patients, the clinic moved to its current location at 510 W. US Highway 60 in Mountain View, MO.

Mercy St. Francis Hospital Unveils Tribute Wall Nearly six decades ago, a small, abandoned hospital in rural Missouri was given a second chance. Since then, a group of health care pioneers followed their faith and helped build a firm foundation where Mercy St. Francis Hospital stands today.

To thank those pivotal people, Mercy St. Francis Hospital has designated a donor wall in the hospital’s front lobby. It was unveiled during a brief ceremony in which hospital staff and families of the donors

discussed the impact four deeply-rooted individuals have had on the community.

“One thing that separates rural medicine is its geographic independence,” said Robert Rogers, Mercy St. Francis Hospital Administrator. “It is this very separation that gives it its strength. It is community members taking care of community members. It is only through the support and dedication of individuals like Sister Cornelia, Dr. Grace Doane, Dr. Jon Roberts, and

Van K. Smith that rural medicine can thrive.”

Photos of each donor is accompanied by a plaque, highlighting many of the following accomplishments:

Sister M. Cornelia Blasko, born in Slovakia, joined the Sisters of the Congregation of the Daughters of St. Francis of Assisi at the age of 14. In 1956, responding to a call for help from Father Sylvester Bauer of West Plains, she and five other Sisters of Mercy arrived in Mountain View on a mission to reopen the local hospital and provide compassionate medical care to the community. Sister Cornelia led the charge to transform health care in Mountain View for 56 years serving as leader and administrator. More recently, the fundraising arm of Mercy St. Francis has been named after her.

Mercy St. Francis honors incredible individuals who were and are a part of the great mission of Mercy.

Van K. Smith, a lifelong Mountain View resident and businessman, tirelessly contributed time and money to improve St. Francis’ facilities. Smith supported a new hospital emergency room dedicated in 1996. In 1998, he worked closely with the Daughters of St. Francis and Sisters of Mercy to advocate co-sponsorship, bringing

St. Francis into the regionally-based Mercy Health System. His legacy to St. Francis made excellence in medical service available to Mountain View and surrounding communities. Smith’s community involvement extended to Mercy in Springfield, Missouri, through various acts of philanthropy.

In 1990, Mercy expressed appreciation for Smith by naming a hospital library in honor of him. Later the name was amended to Van K. Smith Community Health Library, located at the C. H. “Chub” O’Reilly Cancer Center in Springfield, Missouri.

Dr. Grace Doane became the first woman to graduate with a doctorate from Drake Medical School in ear, nose, and throat practices in 1913. She came to know the Daughters of St. Francis soon after they arrived in 1956, working tirelessly to help meet their many basic needs — including a vehicle for the sisters to drive, and a new oven to replace their

tiny stove. Dr. Doane later purchased property north of the hospital and built the hospital chapel in memory of her late husband, Dante Pierce. In 1959, she broke ground to start construction of the Sister’s House on the property she had purchased. She opened Judy’s Museum in 1958 and all proceeds from this museum went to provide

financial assistance to the hospital. Before her death in 1980, she established the Grace O. Doane Foundation, which provides an endowment gift of nearly $700,000 for Mercy St. Francis Hospital and is still used to provide scholarships to area students.

Dr. Jon Roberts, a US Army veteran, opened his family practice office at St. Francis Hospital in July 1977. He later helped establish and staff clinics in Birch Tree (1988), Eminence (1997), and Summersville (1998). At Mercy St. Francis Hospital, Dr. Roberts’ dedication resulted in a position as Hospitalist as well as numerous terms and leadership positions on the Governing Board and Medical Staff Board. In 1988, with no local health department, Dr. Roberts stepped in to administer free, state-supplied

medicine to control an outbreak of Hepatitis A, and worked with the Missouri Department of Health to control tuberculosis and many other diseases in the area. In 2003, he was instrumental in establishing the non-profit organization Good Samaritan Care Clinic, on which he serves as clinical medical director. He has also traveled in association with Harvest International and Samaritan’s Purse to regions of need, such as Thailand, China, Honduras, Nepal, and Haiti. Before his retirement in 2012, Dr. Roberts frequently made

house calls to the terminally ill, rode in the ambulance with the critically ill, and

gave his own money to help economically poor parents care for their children.
