Eliminating StigmaWorld Sicide Preention Day eent

Because not talking about it isnt

working, local agencies have banded to-gether and planned an evening to shareinfo & experiences, and hold a candle-light vigil to remember loved ones lost tosuicide, in observance of World SuicidePrevention Day on September 10. Thisevent will be held in the Theatre at NVIT,7-9pm, doors open at 6:30pm.

This is the first major event Merritthas held to commemorate World SuicideDay, although last year several agenciesmanned an info booth at Coopers. Thisyears event will consist of info booths, apanel discussion, video presentation, andan opportunity to share experiences as away to combat the stigma associatedwith suicide and mental illness.

With suicide as one of the leadingcauses of death in the world, especially

among young people, local agencies areworking toward breaking down stigmaand begin the dialogue to reduce thelosses in our community.

To remember loved ones lost to sui-cide, there will be a Soles to RememberSouls collection. You are invited to donatea pair of new or nearly new shoes or

boots to remember a lost soul, as a re-minder that we dont need to walk alone.Shoes will be donated to a local charity. There will also be a giant kite on site to at-tach names of loved ones to the tail. Thekite is a symbol of World Suicide Preven-tion Day, a symbol of loss and connection.

Local agencies encourage and wel-come everyone interested and especiallyanyone affected by suicide or mental ill-ness to attend our gathering on Septem-

ber 10. FMI contact Mary Ramsey378-3401 or MJ Berezan 378-9222.
