The cool breeze is a welcomed experience at the end

of summer. Leaving your bedroom windows open

while sleeping and throwing on an extra soft blanket is

my idea of the perfect weather. The beautiful colors

of God’s handiwork are displayed everywhere, and it is

nothing short of stunning!

Our new fall kick-off has already begun at Messiah. There are SOOO many things happening here that we wanted to inform you of a change to the 11:00 worship service. The staff and music department has been praying for several years that God would move the hearts of more people to become interested in helping provide Contemporary Worship once again here at Messiah. We have been blessed.

Beginning October 6th, our service times will reflect the new Sunday Standard for Worship! The 7:30 & 8:45 services will be the same. Their type of worship will be more Traditional, using the organ as the main instrument for leading the singing. The 11:00 service will be a service that is Contemporary with different Praise Teams, youth and adult leading the singing using guitars and piano. It has been a rather long time since we have been able to offer 2 different types of worship here at Messi-ah and we are all thankful for the blessing of so many individuals that want to help lead the singing for the 11L00 worship. The adult and youth choirs will continue to offer-up music to edify our Lord and Savior throughout the school year at all 3 services. There is always room for ‘1 more’ in our groups!! Wednesday afternoon, the youth handbell group; “Joyful Ringers” meets in the sanctuary at 5:00 pm. The adult vocal choir; “Messiah Singers” also rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 PM, in the sanctuary. The adult handbell choir; “Jubilant Bells” rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 PM, in the sanctu-ary. Youth Praise Team will usually rehearse the First and Third Tuesdays, at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary. The same rehearsal will also take place on Thursdays at 3:30 – for those who are unable to make the Tuesday practice. This group will lead singing at the 2nd and 4th Sundays each month. The Adult Praise Team will usually have rehearsal on the Second and Fourth Tuesday. This group will lead the music on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. There is ALWAYS room for 1 more!!!!

Are you like me? Do you enjoy a challenge? This month Messiah will begin the Red Letter Challenge.

Here is what my friend and fellow Pastor Zach Zehnder, the author of the Red Letter Challenge has to say.

“The mission of Red Letter Challenge (RLC) is to help people live more like Jesus. Sadly, when people think

of Jesus-followers it is a far cry from who Jesus actually is. After all that Jesus has done for us, we cannot

be content with the picture and representation that we are sharing. We must change the story and

perception of who Jesus is. At RLC, we believe that if people truly met the real Jesus, they would really

fall in love with Him. So how do we change the story that we are telling? We go back to Christ’s words.

You know, those red letters in your Bible. It turns out he had a lot to say to His followers about what we

are called to do and how we are called to live.

The RLC is unique because it takes Christ’s literal words and gives you practical daily challenges based on

those words. The RLC will give you targets to shoot for to help you measure how you are practically

following Him. RLC believes that Jesus followers want to be the best Jesus followers that we can be not

out of obligation, but out of gratitude for what Jesus has done for us!

Do you have what it takes to really follow Jesus? To truly do what He said? I believe you do! The RLC will

help you:

1) Have a deeper relationship with Jesus.

2) Receive God’s forgiveness in your life and give grace to others.

3) Give you a greater heart of service.

4) Help you become more generous.

5) Give you confidence to speak about what Jesus has done in your life.

The Sunday Mask

I love Sundays. They are usually the highlight of my week. I know I know I get paid to say that I am

a pastor after all. But for me, Sundays are especially significant because it is Sunday when the church is full

of noise. It's Sundays when you get to see people greeting one another with warm handshakes, heartfelt

hugs, and little ones running down the hall to clamp onto a leg of their loved ones. On Sunday I get to see

the church come together in one place in one time and be a family.

It's an ideal time for the whole of Gods people to be together, drink a little coffee, eat a couple of

donuts, and enjoy being with one another. What happens on Sunday though often doesn't look like what

happens Monday through Saturday. We wear clothes we don't wear any other time of the week. We wear

a smile that comes Monday morning will be replaced with a scowl. We put on makeup that by evening will

be streaked because of tears streaming down your face. We leave church get into our cars and take a deep

sigh, only to drive home hurry to change out of our church clothes and back into the 'real' you for the 'real'

world.

Worship isn’t designed to be a one-day thing. Worship is an everyday thing that culminates with a

gathering of folks who serve the same God you do. They may not walk, talk, or act like you, but they love

the same Father in Heaven. Worship goes from God to man and man to God. We receive Gods gifts and

promises and praise him with thanksgiving for these beautiful blessings. No designer label or fancy knotted

tie will make you worthy to receive any of it, but none the less it's your because he says it's yours.

You don't see me in a suit and tie on every Sunday. I am usually in jeans and a button-down with

sport coat thrown on (even though I’m sweating). I don’t do this because I am a slob or because I hate wear-

ing a tie, I do it because I don’t want to be fake. I don’t want to wear a Sunday mask that looks different

than the rest of my life. I am the same guy standing at the altar on Sunday that you will find at La Casita on

Tuesday night. For better or worse, you get to see who God is in my life on a daily and weekly basis. I am a

wretched sinner in need of a savior thankful for the gift I don't deserve. I give God my very best, and that is

the real present self that wears jeans, sings loud, taps his foot, laughs at his mistakes, cries way to quickly,

complains about coffee, plain spoken bald and bearded self.

As you make your way through the next week ask yourself, are you bringing your best self to God,

or are you wearing a mask? John 10:10 says that the thief comes to steal kill and destroy (all the things

you think you need to be before God) but Jesus says “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the

full. God knows who you are to the very core of your being and no perfume, designer label, fancy suit,

jeans, flip flops, or shorts will change that. You are beautifully and wonderfully made, be the reflection

of the one who saved you, not the thief that says you must be better.

Women Of Messiah The in-reach and out-reach recipients of proceeds from the bazaar were decided at the September meeting. They are LBT Becky Grossmann, Habitat For Humanity, Global Health Ministries, Community Service Center, Community Partners with Youth, our carpet fund, AV fund upgrade, preschool playground, and church management software.

Upcoming Events October 5th is LWML Rally at Our Saviour’s Lutheran in St. Paul. Breakfast is served at 8:45 and the meeting starts at 9:30.Cost is $7 at the door. The speaker is Evelyn Seton, president of Chance International Outreach which rescues young girls and their babies by providing a safe environment and education, including basic computer skills. Call 651-631-8956 to register. Call Donna if interested in attending. October 6th is LWML Sunday. We will be serving sweet breads between services. Help is needed to make bread, set up, serve, and clean up. All ladies are asked to wear purple or gold. This is an opportunity for us to encourage others to join us to grow in faith and service. October 8 is the next meeting date with potluck at 5:30 and meeting at 6:30. We will be finishing up projects for the bazaar. In preparation for the bazaar on Monday, October 28 we will make rosettes at 9:00. Wednesday, October 30th at 9:00 is cookie frosting. Bring unfrosted cut-out cookies and ideas for deco-rating them. Frosting is provided. (Bring a bag lunch if desired.) Thursday, October 31st we will be making lefsa, starting at 9:00. (Bring a potluck lunch item.) Also on Thursday, October 31st starting at 8:30 tables will be set up in the bazaar areas. We need some able-bodied helpers for this. Set up in some areas begins on Thursday and gets into full swing on Friday, November 1st. (Bring a potluck lunch item.)

Leadership Council Minutes

Present: Pastor Steensma, Pastor Matt Albright, Brady Bargman, Brian Thistle, Phil Dommer, Dayle Boyce, Candace Johnson, Pam Groscost, Jeni Aabel and staff representative Kay Knutson The meeting started at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, July 30 18, 2019 with Jeni Aabel opening with a prayer.

Status of monthly minutes: A motion was made to accept the June 18, 2019 LC meeting minutes. The motion was seconded. The motion passed. Member Changes: There was one new family that was received by transfer. There were no baptisms. There were two weddings; one was a vow renewal. There was one funeral. A motion was made to accept the membership changes. The motion was seconded. The motion passed. Treasurer Report: The income for June was $50,949. The expenses for June were $62,444 versus the budgeted $66,253 resulting in a shortfall of $11,495 for the month. The mortgage is currently at $1,104,018. Staff Report: Kay and Heather have all the scheduling done for music groups for the fall. There were no other new items from other staff. Pastor Report: Pastor Steensma gave the pastor’s report. The annual staff performance reviews were completed the week of June 17th. We had a wonderful week of Vacation Bible School with over 55 students and 45 volunteers. The National Youth Gathering began on Thursday, July 11th. Messiah sent 14 students and 6 adults along with Pastor Matt and Haley. All staff will be heading off on a three-day retreat, August 1-3 to spend time together team building and dreaming about Messiah. Messiah as a whole church will begin the Red Letter Challenge on October 20th. More details will follow in the next few months. Old Business

After touring the rental property, the review group presented two recommendations and a pros and cons list. One recommendation was to subdivide the property and the other was three options for repair or sell. The LC decided to go forward to subdivide the property and review the other options over the next month to be discussed at the August LC meeting

Construction in the Pre-School area is done. The playground installation has been delayed until next year, since the contractor couldn’t start the job until October and that would interfere with Pre-School classes.

Brian Thistle will address the congregation in August with information on the new Budget and Repair Fund.

Everything is almost completed with the Boiler Service update and they will do a follow-up check in September.

A motion was made to approve the Policies Book as amended by email. The motion was seconded. The motion passed.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL MINUTES (Con’t.) New Business

Curt Flor reported that two air top units are not working, and they will be looked at. The riding lawn mower is down and will see if it can be repaired or if a new one needs to be purchased.

The Elders Policies was given to the LC to review over the next month. Heather was given the go ahead to seek other Office Management Software. She is running into many

unsolvable problems with the current software. Next LC meeting will be Tuesday, August 27th.

STEWARDSHIP

“How Should a Steward Use His/Her Gifts”

The Christian steward must recognize that all his gifts come from God and are to be used for

building up the Church (1 Peter 4:10).

While pride is always a danger we must guard against, so is the lack of acknowledgement of

a gift the steward may consider insignificant.

There are some famous Biblical heroes with whom we’re all familiar, but there are others less

well-known who are named in the Bible because they used their God-given talents and

abilities for the work of the Lord. Exodus 35:30-35 recognizes Bezalel and Oholiab as men

whom God had filled with His Spirit and “…..with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of

crafts …..” When the tabernacle was built, these were men “willing to come and do the

work” (Exodus 36:2.

Galatians 6:3-5 offers this balance: If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he

deceives himself. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself,

without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load.

Being mindful that all we are and have is from the Lord, we will realize that is right and

proper to give Him glory, rather than ourselves, and to use our gifts for service to God and the

Church.

And this is why we are offering coloring sheets and markers in the pews! Contrary to how it

may appear to those of us who need to sit still to concentrate, other folks— kids, teens and

adults alike— actually can focus their attention better on what they are hearing. “it forces

SO BREAK OUT THE MARKERS! GRAB A PICTURE! There is no judgement here… if your

hands are busy we’d love to see your “work of art.” Put completed doodles in the tray on the

Welcome Center under the big TV and we will hang them in the hallway by the nursery. Pick

them up the following Sunday if you have a masterpiece you want to take home.

Markers are in plastic containers with red

covers. Find these boxes in the

pews, or on the table by the rear entrance to the

sanctuary. Coloring sheets are also

available with the markers.

FALL CLEANUP DAY

SATURDAY OCTOBER 26th

Fresh air! Donuts! Exercise! Funny people! Big Rigs! These are a few of the reasons to

join in on the ANNUAL CLEAN UP DAY! We rake leaves, clean up the church grounds and

other outside tasks to prep for the winter. Coffee, Hot

Chocolate and Donuts will be ready at 9:00am but you can

start any time! We aim to finish by noon. BRING rakes,

leaf blowers, gardening gloves, and especially TRUCKS

and TRAILERS that can be used to haul leaves to the

Mounds View compost site. ALL AGES ARE WELCOME.
