Music “Year” Set to Kick OffAt the end of this month and in September, all music groups will return to rehearsal and performance schedules. Many of our music groups have had a summer’s rest. But please note that many people continued to work hard to lead worship during the summer. The Epworth Choir arrived early for church each week to help lead the 8:30 worship, and the Aldersgate Choir has had some Wednesday evening and many Sunday morning rehearsals. Thank you, singers.
Music time for children: On Sunday, August 23, Godly Play classes resume at the Sunday school hour, and this will include music time for children,
as before. Soon Mount Vernon's angelic younger voices will be heard in worship again!
Something exciting happened to Mount Vernon’s handbells this summer: they traveled to Columbia, S.C., to be tuned and refurbished for
the first time in many years. They look and sound brand new! In the coming weeks the handbell ringers will resume rehearsing.
Christmas pageant: On September 16 our Wednesday dinners and programs will resume, and we will begin rehearsing our children’s Christmas
pageant. All kids are encouraged to participate.
New This year: An Orff /Handbell ensemble: Immediately before the pageant rehearsals begin at 6:30, kids in third grade and up can participate
in an Orff/Handbell ensemble. This group will rehearse from about 6:10 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Kids should have time to eat betweem 5:45 and 6:10, before rehearsing.
As always, anyone is welcome to join a music group or help with one (such as the Wednesday night pageant rehearsals and performance). The beginning of the music season makes a natural time to join. Feel free to just come to a rehearsalto learn more about a group, or to talk to me about it.
Rehearsal times Epworth Choir: Sundays at 8 a.m.
Aldersgate Choir: Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.
Aldersgate Ringers: Tuesdays at 11 a.m.
Wesley Ringers: Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Orff/Handbells: Wednesdays at 6:10 p.m.
Godly Play/Sunday Music Time: Sundays, 9:45 a.m.
Pageant/Musical: Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m.
I hope to see you there! – Tim Navis
Youth Activities to ResumeAll 5th through 12th graders are invited to be part of our Mount Vernon Youth Ministry! We have two groups: Younger Youth Fellowship (grades 5 –8) led by Beth deAristizabal, Cathy Hawkins, Michelle Larking, and Nikki Parrish, and High School Youth (grades 9 – 12) led by Nik Tiver Belanger and Beth Bauman.
Sunday, August 23 – First youth meetingSunday, August 30 – Parent/Youth Covered-Dish Dinner
Children’s Sunday School to ResumeSunday morning classes and music for two-year-olds through high school students will resume on Sunday, August 23. Godly Play is a method of Christian formation and spiritual direction for children that features engaging storytelling, beautiful objects that illustrate the message, and materials that encourage a creative response. Based on the teachings of Maria Montessori and Jerome Berryman, Godly Play teaches children the art of using religious language to help them become more aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives.

Lude, our Haitian student, and Delma are from the same hometown, Cap-Haitian, in Haiti, and they have known each other for years. Delma is fully supportive of Lude’s dream to establish a dental clinic in Haiti and will be by her side as she completes her final year at
Averett and goes on to dental school. Delma lives in Miami, and of course they would
like to be together. He plans to move to Danville if he can secure employment here. What a wonderful gift it would be if we at Mount Vernon could use our social
capital to help Delma network for a job here as Lude finishes her final year. Ask Lude or call the
office for Delma’s resumé. They will also need an inexpensive apartment in the Averett area so that Lude can continue to walk
to classes. If you know of employment or apartment possibilities, please contact Lude (548 -1264).
Whitmell UMC Hosts Mount Vernon UMWomenWhitmell United Methodist Church was the site of a dinner hosted by the members of Whitmell’s United Methodist Women in June. Lura Lawrence, President of Whitmell’s UMW, organized this time of Christian fellowship to give Mount Vernon’s members an opportunity to meet Sherri Krauss, our district “Membership and Outreach” officer. Sherri’s enthusiasm was evident as she spoke movingly of her “belief in mission and service to others.” She looks forward to meeting new friends and sharing “hope, love, and faith experiences by helping to grow and strengthen United Methodist women along their faith journey.” Audrey Daniels, the Danville District’s UMW Vice President, shared upcoming events for the fall of 2015. Rosalind Morton, Lois Love, Marlyn Sigmon, and Betty Ann Smith represented Mount Vernon’s UMW at this delightful event. We extend heartfelt thanks to the ladies of Whitmell UMC for their devotion, fellowship, and friendship...and the delicious dinner! – Rosalind Morton

Debut of New Timpani
Mount Vernon Church has beautiful new timpani! Thank you to Jean Vernon and her family, who donated the timpani in loving memory of Melvin C. Vernon, Jr., Jean’s husband of 53 years, who died 6½ years ago. The timpani were dedicated at the 11 a.m. service on July 26 and were played by Joe Northen for hymns and special music during the service.
We are looking into doing a new church directory! Anyone
who would like to assist, please contact Susan Davis:
[email protected] or 792-0998.

Circle #2 to Meet at the LakeCircle #2 welcomes all women of the church to participate in our circle this
year. At 4 p.m., on Wednesday, August 19, we will meet at Betty Leggett’s lake house. Please bring a covered dish to share and plan for an afternoon of good food and lots of fun. We will use this time to enjoy the beauty of God’s world while planning for the upcoming year. Stay tuned for more news of this event in the Sunday bulletins.

Estate Planning SuggestionGood estate planning dictates that:
1) You have a last will and testament, and2) you review it periodically and make updates as needed.
We hope that in your estate planning you will consider Mount Vernon Church. Lifetime gifts and bequests under your will are tax deductible and will certainly add to the financial strength of our church. Gifts may be made to the
church or to the church’s foundation or to both, if you wish. – Budge Kent, Treasurer

Project Crossroads ’15Our Crossroads team of youth and adults traveled to Marion, Virginia, July 26 – August 1 for the group’s 14th annual summer mission trip. They installed underpinning and repaired roofs, porches, and ceilings in Saltville, Chilhowie, Rural Retreat, and Atkins. They also worked in the community garden near Hungry Mother Park.
The team will lead worship on August 23 and looks forward to sharing from our trip
in word, song, and photos.

Younger Youth Group“Caring for Creation” Mission Event
“Caring for Creation” (with a focus on Genesis chapters 1–2, and Psalm 139) was the theme of the Middle School Youth mission event held on July 29 and 30. Nine youth and three leaders – Beth deAristizabal, Cathy Hawkins, and Michelle Larking – participated. Day 1 took the group to White Flint Farm, where Bill and Chérie Guerrant put their theology into practice with sustainable, chemical-free farming that emphasizes respect and care for land, animals, and people. The kids visited many of the gardens, fed the chickens, watched the pigs wallow happily, dug some potatoes, and learned about ways that God provides for insect control, crop rotation, and land management. Day 2 took us to the weekly lunch program at Epiphany Church. The youth prepared lunches that included fruits and vegetables from the farm and shared in the sack lunch that they distributed to about 40 members of the community. The days were also filled with games, crafts, and worship through music, prayer, and Bible study. God showed the leaders and kids that it truly is a blessing (as he promised in Genesis) to care for his creation – fruitful land, amazing animals, and every unique person. – Beth deAristizabal and Cathy Hawkins
