From El Presidente:First off I want to thank Richard & Carole Jefferson for hosting the 19th Annual “Chilly

Run”. This was a superb event that, thanks to the participating members had close 60 differentfood items with approximately 25 chili dishes.

Next up is the 27th Annual “Get the Dust Off” Rallye, our Rallye Master Eric Salminenand his band of helpers have laid out the course and are ready to go on Sunday, May 1, 2016.Look for a copy of the event flier in this issue of the Octagram. This event will be fun for boththe pro and novice. If you have never participated in aSTD rallye have no fear, there’s normally an award forlast place.

Finally, I want to remind everybody about MG2016 in Louisville, Kentucky this June 13 – 17. We havea pretty good contingent attending from the MGs of Bal-timore. This event is an All Register Event with the lead-ing North American MG Registers taking part. They arethe North American MGB Register, the New EnglandMGT Register, the North American MGA Register andthe Triple M Register. Right now registration stands at550 cars and over 1000 MGs are anticipated. If youhave never attended one of these major national events, trust me they are not to be missed. By Richard Jefferson

If last Sunday’s gatheringis any indication of what’s tocome, then we can all look for-ward to next year’s party. Itkind of all amazed us that thisevent has been ongoing for 19years. The event was first host-ed by Carole and Richard Jef-ferson way back in 1997 andhere we were all back in theirhome for the 2016 version ofthis event. How great is that?

In 1997 we were justlooking for something to breakup thelong winter chill. As we remember it Ithink maybe a dozen people showed upfor the first event and maybe there werefour or five chilies. Then in later yearssomeone said that maybe we should havesome cornbread and chips to go along

with the chili and maybe a desert too.Fast-forward 19 years and I think wehad either 16 or 18 chilies (tried totaste them all and failed) but we hadan almost equal number of side dishesand deserts; oh my God were theygood. We’ll have to give out moreawards for these at future events. A goodaward for deserts may be “Highest CalorieCount”; there would have been multiplewinners this year.

As always we try and single out theyears best offering here are a few of note.First the best overall chili; this popular

vote goes to the offering voted best over-all by all. This year’s best goes to ChipNorman. The most unusual chili went toChuck Moreland; Chuck’s pot of acream based was a crowd favorite. Thebest non-chili we awarded 2nd place toVicky Hineline’s magnificent antipastoplatter; there must have been over a doz-en delicious things on it. The 1st placeaward went to Wayne Pfau for his carrotcake; bummer here is it was all gone be-fore I got some! Now Alex Ollerman andMike Lutz shared the next award in thecategory of “Chili With the Most GasPotential”. Now who wouldn’t want to

win that award? Saving the most coveted forlast “The Hunk of Burning Love” went toMike Lutz for the fifth time. I consulted chiefChuck Moreland who said Mike used someindustrial solvent to get that throat burningeffect of his chili. Mike on the other hand saidhe used some type of super magic juju pepperto get that level of heat. I tried this one and Iwas ok after my vision cleared and of coursethe flashback that occurred the next morning.

Sorry this sounds like a cooking articletotally non-car related , but I can assure youcars and everything else were discussed at theparty. If you missed it I’m sorry; maybe makesure you make it to the 20th.

A woman brought a very limp duck intoa veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on thetable, the vet pulled out his stethoscope andlistened to the bird's chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook hishead and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck,Cuddles, has passed away."

The distressed woman wailed, "Are yousure?"

"Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," re-plied the vet.. "How can you be so sure?" she protest-ed. "I mean you haven't done any testing onhim or anything. He might just be in a coma orsomething." The vet rolled his eyes, turned aroundand left the room. He returned a few minuteslater with a black Labrador Retriever. As theduck's owner looked on in amazement, the dogstood on his hind legs, put his front paws onthe examination table and sniffed the duckfrom top to bottom. He then looked up at thevet with sad eyes and shook his head.

The vet patted the dog on the head andtook it out of the room. A few minutes later hereturned with a cat. The cat jumped on thetable and also delicately sniffed the bird fromhead to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled outof the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said,"I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely,100% certifiably, a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer termi-nal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, whichhe handed to the woman.. The duck's owner, still in shock, tookthe bill. "$550.00!" she cried, "$550.00 just totell me my duck is dead!"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you hadjust taken my word for it, the bill would havebeen $5.00, but with the Lab Report and theCat Scan, it's now $550.00”

Octagram February 2016 17

Torque-to-Yield (TTY) head bolts are used onmany late model engines to clamp the cylinderhead to the block. They differ from ordinaryhead bolts in that TTY bolts are designed tostretch slightly when they are tightened down.TTY head bolts are often used with multi-layersteel head gaskets, so stretching the bolt helpseven clamping forces across the head gasket toprovide a better seal.

TTY head bolts also require somewhat lesstorque when they are tightened than a conven-tional head bolt. This helps reduce distortion inthe cylinder bores. Rounder cylinder boresmean less blowby past the piston rings, loweremissions and better compression.

The metallurgy and heat treatment of TTYhead bolts and regular head bolts is different, and you can sometimes tell one from the otherby their appearance. A TTY bolt may have anarrower shank (so it can stretch more easily),and is often longer than a conventional headbolt. To be sure, refer to the vehicle manufac-turer's service literature. Many parts stores canalso look up your vehicle and tell you if it usesTTY head bolts or not.

TTY bolts may also be used on the engine'sconnecting rods and the crankshaft main bear-ing caps.TORQUE-TO-YIELD BOLT INSTALLA-TION TIPS

* Never reuse a torque-to-yield bolt. Becausethe bolts are designed to stretch once, stretch-ing them a second time may stretch them be-yond their yield point causing the bolt tobreak. They are one-time use bolts, so throwthe old bolts away and buy new ones.

* TTY bolts are usually installed dry. Do notapply any oil, grease, assembly lube or sealeron the bolt threads. The reason why is becauselubricants reduce friction when a bolt is tight-ened. This actually increases the torque loadon the bolt, which may overload and stretch aTTY bolt too far, causing it to break.

* Always clean the bolt hole threads in the en-gine block before installing torque-to-yieldhead bolts. If there is any rust, corrosion orthread damage in the hole, it can increase fric-

Octagram February 2016 18

tion and may cause inaccurate torque read-ings when the bolt is tightened. This canresult in slightly loose bolts that may not sealthe head gasket properly.

* On many aluminum cylinder heads, hard-ened steel washers are required under thehead bolts. The washers help distribute theclamping load and prevent galling when thebolt is tightened down.

* If the cylinder head has been resurfaced torestore flatness, check to make sure the headbolts don't bottom out before they are fullytightened. You may have to use a copper orsteel shim under the head gasket to restoreproper head height so the bolts will tightendown properly. The gasket shim will alsorestore proper overhead cam timing, whichcan be affected when a cylinder head hasbeen milled down.

* Use the procedure recommended by thevehicle manufacturer to tighten torque-to-yield head bolts, rod bolts and main bearingcap bolts. The tightening procedure alwaysrequires an accurate torque wrench and usu-ally an angle gauge. The bolts are usuallytightened down in three to five steps, apply-ing a little more load on the bolts with eachstep. The final step is to twist each bolt aspecified number of degrees to stretch thebolts to their design limit.

* If a bolt breaks when you are tightening it,you may have over-stretched it. Or, theremay be debris in the bolt hole that is bindingthe bolt. Or, you may have mistakenly lubri-cated the bolt threads and overloaded thebolt. Or, the bolt may be bottoming out in

the hold because it is too long, or because thehead has been milled.TORQUE-TO-YIELD BOLT REMOVAL TIPS

Because torque-to-yield cylinder head bolts aredesigned for one-time use, it's not unusual forthem to break when you attempt to removethem. That's bad news because you then have todrill out what's left of the bolt from the hole inthe block, and possibly repair the threads in thehole if they were damaged.

Rust and corrosion in high mileage engines cancause cylinder head bolts to stick, so to helploosen up the threads prior to removing them, try this trick:

* Place a punch in the center of each head bolt, then give each bolt a couple of raps with a ham-mer. The jarring action should help break looseany rust or corrosion between the threads on thebolts and those in the engine block. If a bolt stillsticks, use the punch and hammer and rap itagain. Or, if you have a pneumatic air hammer, use a blunt tip and hammer on the top of thebolt to shake it loose.

* After removing the torque-to-yield head bolts, inspect and clean the holes in the block. Buy anew set of replacement bolts, compare thelength and threads to the original bolts to makesure they match, then discard the old bolts.

The‘Octagram’ is proud tochronicle Matthew Dinner-man’s, a member of ourMGoB family, journey onthe restoration of his MGBGT V8. In this initialchapter we will show youthe beginnings. Some pic-ture to show you its’ condi-tion and some facts andfigures about the MGB GTV8. In April’s Octagram wewill discuss Matt’s LBCheritage with his family. We will follow with hisgoals and periodically wewill add chapters to updateyou on his progress.

Matt’s car is a 1973 MGB GT with a nicetwist. It is a RHD factory V8. This means itwas built with the aluminum-block 3528 ccRover V8 engine. This nice little V8 produced137 bhp at 5000 RPM and 193 lb·ft (262 N·m)of torque helped it hit 60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.7seconds and goes on to a respectable 125 mph(201 km/h) top speed. Fuel consumption wasjust under 20 mpg.

Because of aluminum cylinder block andheads, the Rover V8 engine weighed approxi-mately forty pounds less than MG's iron four-cylinder. Unlike the MGC, the V8 that providedthe MGB GT V8's increased power and torque

did not require significant chassis changesnor sacrifice handling.

Both chrome & rubber-bumpered GTversions of the V8-powered MGB were pro-duced by the factory. Production ended in1976. MG never attempted to export theMGB GT V8 to the United States. Theychose not to develop a left-hand-drive ver-sion of the MGB GT V8 although the RoverV8 engine was offered in US-bound Rovermodels throughout the same period and be-yond. I got this recipe from a newspaper a few yearsago, made it and been making it ever since. If youlove your greens, you'll love this salad. I have alsoused other greens on different occasions. Yourchoice on how much mustard you use......... 1 or 2teaspoons.Servings 4Units US

1 bunch thin asparagus spear 150 g sugar snap peas, trimmed 150 g snow peas, trimmed 150 g shelled fresh peas 50 g rocket 50 g Baby Spinach 2 sticks celery, sliced

DRESSING INGREDIENTS 1 garlic clove 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons white vinegar 1 -2 teaspoon grainy mustard

Remove woody ends from asparagus and cutinto equal lengths. Cook the peas and asparagus in boiling salt-ed water for around 2 minutes or until just ten-der but still crisp. Do not overcook them andwhen removed from water refresh them in abowl of iced cold water. Drain, pat dry andplace into a bowl with rocket, spinach and cel-ery. Combine the dressing ingredients, add saltand pepper to taste and mix well through. Pourover salad, and toss. Serve.

General conversion 10 grams isapproximately 1/3 of an ounce. So 100 gramswill equal about 3.5 ounces. Hope that helps.

We always seem to want an excuseto feast. Well March brings us an early spring feastand party day known as St. Patrick’s Day. So I amincluding some Irish dishes for the feast day. I hopeyou might enjoy one or two.

This traditional supper dish of sausages, bacon, on-ions and potatoes dates back at least as far as the earlyeighteenth century. It seems to be more of a city dishthan a rural one: it was a favourite of Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels and dean of Christ ChurchCathedral in Dublin. In Dublin itself, coddle retains itsreputation as a dish that can be prepared ahead oftime and left in a very slow oven while the peoplewho're going to eat it have to be out of the house for awhile - making it an excellent dish for very busy peo-ple! The name of the dish is probably descended fromthe older word caudle, derived from a French wordmeaning "to boil gently, parboil, or stew". The morerecent version of the verb, "coddle," is still applied togently cooked eggs, "Coddled Eggs". Please note, thesausages used should be the best quality 100% porksausages you can get your hands on! This recipewould also work VERY well if cooked in a crock-pot,reduce the liquid by about half if cooking the coddlethis way. Serve with Guinness and Irish soda bread.Although this is an easy to prepare one pot meal andits simplicity belies its amazing taste and flavour -comfort food at its best! Servings 4-6

2 kg potatoes 2 large onions, peeled and sliced thickly 450 g good quality pork sausages 450 g bacon, piece thick cut 500 ml water 1 ham stock cube or 1 beef or 1 chicken stockcube, if ham stock isn't available 3 -4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped salt (toseason) coarse-ground pepper (to season)

1. Peel the potatoes. Cut large ones into three or fourpieces: leave smaller ones whole. Finely chop theparsley. Boil the water and in it dissolve the bouilloncube.2. Grill or broil the sausages and bacon long enoughto colour them. Be careful not to dry them out! Drainbriefly on paper towels. When drained, chop the baconinto one-inch pieces. If you like, chop the sausagesinto large pieces as well. (Some people prefer to leavethem whole.).3. Preheat the oven to 300F / 150°C In a large flame-proof heavy pot with a tight lid, start layering the in-gredients: onions, bacon, sausages or sausage pieces, potatoes. Season each layer liberally with fresh-groundpepper and the chopped fresh parsley. Continue untilthe ingredients are used up. Pour the bouillon mixtureover the top. On the stove, bring the liquid to a boil.Immediately turn the heat down and cover the pot.(You may like to additionally put a layer of foil under-neath the pot lid to help seal it.).4. Put the covered pot in the oven and cook for atleast three hours. (Four or five hours won't hurt it.) Atthe two-hour point, check the pot and add more waterif necessary. There should be about an inch of liquidat the bottom of the pot at all times.5. To Serve. Guinness, bottled or draft, goes extreme-ly well with this dish (indeed, adding a little to the pottoward the end of the process wouldn't hurt anything).Another good accompaniment is fresh soda bread, used to mop up the gravy!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEFebruary 8, 2016

-- SEMA to Oppose Action as Threat to Modified Racecars and Parts Suppliers --

Washington, DC (February 8, 2016) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hasproposed a regulation to prohibit conversion of vehicles originally designed for on-road use into race-cars. The regulation would also make the sale of certain products for use on such vehicles illegal. Theproposed regulation was contained within a non-related proposed regulation entitled “GreenhouseGas Emissions and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Engines and Vehicles—Phase 2.” The regulation would impact all vehicle types, including the sports cars, sedans and hatchbacks commonly converted strictly for use at the track. While the Clean Air Act prohibits certainmodifications to motor vehicles, it is clear that vehicles built or modified for racing, and not used onthe streets, are not the “motor vehicles” that Congress intended to regulate. “This proposed regulation represents overreaching by the agency, runs contrary to the law anddefies decades of racing activity where EPA has acknowledged and allowed conversion of vehicles,”said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting. “Congress did not intend the original Clean Air Actto extend to vehicles modified for racing and has re-enforced that intent on more than one occasion.” SEMA submitted comments in opposition to the regulation and met with the EPA to confirmthe agency’s intentions. The EPA indicated that the regulation would prohibit conversion of vehiclesinto racecars and make the sale of certain emissions-related parts for use on converted vehicles ille-gal. Working with other affected organizations, including those representing legions of professionaland hobbyist racers and fans, SEMA will continue to oppose the regulation through the administra-tive process and will seek congressional support and judicial intervention as necessary. The EPA has indicated it expects to publish final regulations by July 2016.

Flyers andAnnouncements

The MG TA Midget replaced the PB in 1936.

A gynecologist became so fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork heburned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decidedto become an auto mechanic.

He went to the local technical college, signed up for classes, attended diligently, andlearned all he could. When the time for the practical exam approached, the gynecologist pre-pared carefully for weeks and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the resultscame back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error,he called the instructor, saying, "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding re-sult, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade?" The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which wasworth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is alsoworth 50% of the mark. This equaled an A". After a pause, the instructor added, "I gave you anextra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I've never seen done in my entirecareer."
