TheaestheticfeelItriedtocreatewasafilm‐noirdramawithasplashof

colour.Iwantedthethemeofthepiecestoberepresentativeoftheemotionsthat

thesubjectsinthephotoswerefeeling.ThefirstsetofphotographsthatItookwere

thephotographsofmyfriendAlexandShaylayingonthebedandthenlaterAlex

standingoverShay.Itwaschallengingatfirsttogetbothofthemcenteredonthe

bed,letalonegetthelightingperfect.IchosetohavetheknifeonthebedbecauseI

knewIwantedtomakethebedsheetblueandforthesakeofthisprojectIwanted

bluetorepresentpeaceanddepression.ThenextdesignIdeaIhadforthebothof

themwasforAlextostandoverherwiththeknife,puttinghiminapositionof

powerandpositioningthecameraatanon‐dominateangle.Idecidedtogowithred

forherjackettorepresentviolenceandheartbreak.Goingwithredwasanother

decisionthatIthoughtaboutinpreplanning.Iwantedtoevokethefeeloflove,yet

lovewithanunderlyingdramafeel.WhenwetookthepicturesofBekah(Red

Lipstick)andI,Iwantedherlipstobered.Thiswasshowinglustandlove,yetmy

eyesIcolouredbluetoshowloss.TheseweretwocontrastingcoloursthatIthought

wouldworktogethertoshowthecontrastbetweenloveanddrama.Thesongwas

anotherinterestingchoice,itwasaboutthe10thoneIselectedbutassoonaswegot

thepicturesdonewithitseemedlikeitfitthemost,nottooobvious,yetjustsubtle

enoughthatIcouldgetawaywithit.Ilikedthat.Myfavouritebyfaristhepictureof

AlexandAndyinthealley.ItoldAlextolook“distressed”andthatwasthefacehe

made,withAndyoutoffocusinthebackandmakingAlex’sjacketblueitreally

showedthedramaIwasgoingfor.

Visualaesthetic:

TheSpirit.IthinkIgotlike30minutesintothismovieandIquitbecauseIdidn’tlikeit.ButwhatIdolikeaboutthismovieisthatitputswhatisn’timportantinblackandwhite,whileleavingthecoloursthatareimportantandhavesomesymbolicvalue,inaparticularcolour.Iwantedtoevokethe40’sfilm‐noircrimedrama,yetIstillwantedsomesymbolismwithinthepicturesandhowtheywereframed.IusedRed,toshowviolence,love,lustandheartbreak,andBluetoshowdepressionandpeace.

Onasidenote:IpickedJazzbecauseIfeelliketheemotionsseeninJazz,especiallyLeonardCohen,bringthat“Iwanttoloveyou,butyou’dratherhavehim”feeling.
