Midterm Write-‐up
T206
For my midterm project I chose the first verse of the song Hands Held High by
Linkin Park. I think the song has an angry feel to it. It relates to the feelings about the war in
Iraq and feelings for the past presidential administration. The visual aesthetic I went with
for the project was sort of a underexposed, warm colored, oversaturated feel. It almost
gives it the effect of being an old or worn picture. I went with this aesthetic because it is
exactly how I think the people of America feel about the war in Iraq. That it is becoming
worn out. The pictures are meant to feel depressed and give a feel of being nonconformist.
The design process for each picture was a little different. The picture with the fist in
the air has the lines of the sides of the roads on the 3rds. I attempted to make it a high
angle shot to emphasize that the American citizens feel inferior and do not get their point
of view heard. The picture with the two people watching a speech from the former
president is a low angle shot to emphasize that the president was in complete power. The
light shining through the window onto the side of the TV was intended to show that the
president has a god-‐like feel. Again, the two people are on the 3rds and the TV is In the
dead center of the frame. The picture with the man pulling out his pockets to show that he
is broke has the man on the line of 3rds. The hallway in the background is meant to
emphasize that people are stuck in a tunnel and it’s a long road ahead. The picture with the
person looking at the loose leaf pieces of paper is featuring his arm on the line of 3rds. His
hand is showing his contemplation of the words written on his papers. Also, there are a
couple really bright spots of light that are relating to the lyrics “I promise to let the sun in”.
The last picture showing the man laying on the couch with his hand on his heart has his
hand on the vertical and horizontal 3rd.
This is my inspiration for my visual aesthetic. I started by trying to match this identically but ended up venturing off a little bit. However, this was the original feel that I was going to try to accomplish. The worn out look of this and also the color scheme. Theses are the lyrics to the the first verse of the song I chose, Hands Held High. Hands Held High (Verse 1) – Linkin Park Turn my mic up louder I got to say something Light weights step to the side when we come in Feel it in your chest the syllables get pumping People on the street they panic and start running Words on loose leaf sheet complete coming I jump in my mind and summon the rhyme, I'm dumping Healing the blind I promise to let the sun in Sick of the dark ways we march to the drum and Jump when they tell us that they wanna see jumping Fuck that I wanna see some fists pumping Risk something, take back what's yours Say something that you know they might attack you for
Cause I'm sick of being treated like I have before Like it's stupid standing for what I'm standing for Like this war's really just a different brand of war Like it doesn't cater the rich and abandon poor Like they understand you in the back of the jet When you can't put gas in your tank These fuckers are laughing their way to the bank and cashing the cheque Asking you to have compassion and have some respect For a leader so nervous in an obvious way Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day In their living room laughing like "what did he say?"
