“Life in Grey” (working treatment)
Wakey wakey, where’s everybody?
(Man wakes up in empty apartment and gazes out the window) I
woke up and it appeared that ash was falling from the sky. (Man
walks down a flight of wobbly stairs, opens the door and steps
into the street) The streets were filled with cadavers and
smelled like Big Foot’s underwear. As I walked through the empty
streets, I remembered the times when my family and I used to go
pick up dead humans from the Ocean. And here I am, still walking
on this empty road, unable to find any people of my kind. Ohh
and I should probably introduce myself to you guys by now, I’m
Mike. I am what you people refer to as a “Zombie.”
The Facts
It’s 2050 now, 50 years after the Human Vs. Zombie war and I
happen to be the only remaining Zombie out there. My kind has
been extinguished and God somehow chose me as the only survivor.
It’s kind of frustrating to know that we Zombies and you humans
used to live together in harmony. I mean, we ate your corpses
while you ate our delicious food and played our sports. If only
I could go back in time and chomp up the idiot who ate your
president to death. Then your multiple nuclear bombs wouldn’t
have wiped out my people. I guess some things are just meant to
be.
A Day in the Life
(Mike is lying in his bed, in his 1500sq. ft apartment that
looks over New York City) This morning, I wake up to the
beautiful sound of my maid’s vacuum cleaner. Can’t say no to a
nice cup of coffee though! (Mike drinks his coffee, puts on his
suit, and heads off to work) Well here I am, walking through the
peaceful radioactive streets of New York. I don’t live a single
second without the thoughts of human flesh in my mouth. (Zoom in
on the face of a pedestrian) Human ladies stare at me like “why
the fuck is this Zbi looking at me, does he really think he can
get into my pants!” Enough with the complaints, I kind of forgot
to mention that I’m what you guys call a “celebrity.” I really
don’t understand why everyone wants to be a superstar these
days. I mean, my days are filled with pedicure appointments
(apparently long nails aren’t really fashionable in the human
world), photo shoots, and boring ass golfing tournaments with my
coworkers from Apple. That’s not really the kind of life I was
hoping for. I mean I can’t walk in a single place without having
the entire room stare at me. All I’m asking for is a little bit
of freedom (Mike walks in to a tall New York skyscraper, steps
on the elevator and greets his boss named Jim).
The Encounter
After work, as I was walking back to my apartment, a grey-necked
individual wearing a hoodie and sunglasses dashed by me and gave
me a glance that I hadn’t seen in over 50 years. Was it tangible
to think that I wasn’t the only Zombie left on this earth? (Mike
runs after stranger but loses him) Well I guess I won’t be able
to find out…
There’s only one Grey?
I walked back to my apartment, sat on my Lazy Boy couch, and
flipped on my 60-inch 3D Sony TV. The first thing that appeared
on the TV screen was a picture of me followed by the words
“Wanted for murder.” In shock, I turned up the volume. (News
anchor speaking) “Microsoft CEO Bill Gates was found
unconscious on Broadway Street. A witness saw the murder and
stated that a Zombie bit Gates’ neck and ran away. As a result
of the bite, Gates fell into a deep coma. NYPD’s one and only
suspect is millionaire Mike the Zombie.” In shock, I got off my
couch only to see the lights in my apartment go out.
(Simultaneously, a group of NYPD officers broke in Mike’s
apartment and shot Mike repeatedly. As Mike was dying, a grey-
necked individual appeared on top of the building across of his
apartment. At that time, Mike knew that a member of his own race
framed him. As everything around him was spinning, the lights
faded out and Mike’s heart came to a stop.)
[Group note: The treatment was a starting point for our group really. We just took
Val’s original idea, and then morphed it into something that the entire group could
have some influence on the way it turned out. The script’s storyline is quite
different than what we have here, but like said before, we really just used it as a
foundation, then the story transformed along in the process.]

1 EXT. BEACH – DAY (DREAM) 1
SETH is walking along the sea shore, and joins a group of
people having a picnic. On the middle of the large
picnic table, there is a strange pile of meat. To the
side of the table, human remains are laid out.
SETH
Hey everybody, sorry I’m late. (Sits down at the
table)
PALE WOMAN
Don’t worry about it we are happy you could join
us!
SETH
Wow, where did you find all these?
PALE MAN
There was a ship wreck a couple of miles away,
and they washed up on shore.
OLDER PALE MAN
So, how’s your job going?
SETH
Pretty good, looking towards a promotion.
OLDER PALE WOMAN
(Walking back from bon fire) Dinner’s ready!
Let’s eat!
The group of people, including Seth, begins to eat the
food that is laid out. Each takes a large portion of the
meat, and begins to scarf it down. Shortly into the
meal, a bright flash blinds out the screen.
2 INT. APARTMENT – DAY 2
Seth jerks awake in an empty apartment, as if he just had
a nightmare. He appears to be sweating and breathing
heavily. The dim light shining through the torn curtains
on the window reveals what appears to be a human leg
lying on the ground. The rest of the room is dark. Seth
walks up to the window, and looks down on the street.
Then Seth looks around the room, finding the remains on
the floor. (Focus in on the leg)
SETH (Seth’s thoughts voice over)
Where am I? (Looks around the room, sees leg)
Shit, not again. The doctor told me the
injections would stop the urges. At least the
guy was already dead.
We see Seth walking down a flight of wobbly stairs with a
large trash bag in hand. He steps out into the streets
and looks around the corner to see if anybody is looking.
He quickly disposes of the bag into the nearby dumpster.
Seth looks at his watch.
SETH
God damn it!
Seth takes off running into the empty streets.
3 INT. SETH’S APARTMENT - NIGHT 3
Seth enters his lavish apartment, looking exhausted. He
throws a bag onto the couch, and sits down next to it.
The maid enters the living room.
MAID
How was the studio today? I bet you were really
busy. (continues rambling)
SETH
Yeah.
Seth walks into his room as his maid is still talking.
He collapses onto his bed and continues to ignore her.
The scene fades into another dream.
4 EXT. BEACH – DAY (DREAM) 4
The group that had appeared before is at the table once
again, eating. The same light flashes, and everybody
panics. The light was miles away, followed by a huge
shock wave. The group piles into a van and the PALE MAN
begins to drive in the opposite direction from the blast.
OLDER PALE MAN
They’ve taken it too far now. We will surely
fight back.
PALE MAN
If there’s any of us left to fight.
SETH
Those fleshy bastards..I’m joining up right
away! They can’t get away with this.
The PALE WOMAN is crying in the back seat of the van.
YOUNG PALE BOY, sitting next to her, stares out the back
window at a large mushroom cloud beginning to develop in
the distance. The group continues to speed away.
5 INT. SETH’S APARTMENT 5
Seth abruptly awakes to the sound of sirens on the city
street. He glances at his alarm clock on the night stand
beside him to realize that is only 2 a.m. He rolls out of
bed and throws on a night robe and makes his way to the
kitchen. He pours himself a glass of what appears to be
‘red wine’. He pulls back the curtains and looks out
over the city. Suddenly he sees a shadowy figure lurking
on a rooftop across the street. He drops the glass, which
shatters, and rushes to another window for a better view.
He is frustrated to find that the figure has disappeared.
6 INT. FREDERICK NEWTON STUDIOS (Seth’s dressing room) 6
Seth is in his dressing room preparing for a photo shoot.
He appears exhausted through his actions. His on-set
assistant SHELLY enters with a clipboard with the shoot
schedule on it and a glass of ‘red wine’.
SHELLY
Good afternoon Seth. Here is your schedule and
your usual. (hands him glass and schedule)
Seth reaches for the glass exposing a wound on his arm
(blood appears clotted and aged).
SHELLY
Seth what the fuck?!
SETH
(mumbling) Oh yeah, that.
SHELLY
What happened? What is that?
SETH
It’s nothing. No big deal.
SHELLY
Well that needs to be cleaned up before the
shoot. Jack will flip his shit if you show up
like that.
Shelly sticks her head out of the dressing room.
SHELLY
Ladies! A little help please.
Several women enter with wash rags and buckets of water
and begin to scrub and wash Seth.
SETH
(to Shelly) The dreams are back...just like
before, but this time it’s even worse...
Shelly drops her pen and stops reading the schedule. Seth
continues...
It feels even more real now...almost like I’m
right there with them...
Shelly looks up at Seth, wide eyed.
SHELLY
Seth they’ve been gone for years... (she
approaches Seth and takes his hand gently) you
need to let this go...Hey the shoot is in ten
minutes and that will make you feel better. We
will talk about this later. Chop chop!
(leaving)
7 INT. FREDERICK NEWTON STUDIOS (Photo shoot set) 7
There is loud techno music playing in the background and
lights flashing. Fans are blowing. Seth is posing in
casual wear. Outfits are changing between flashes.
Shouts of encouragement are able to be heard over the
music. Lights stop flashing, shoot is over, and Shelly
approaches Seth.
SHELLY
Good job.
SETH
What can I say? I’m the best there is!
SHELLY
Let’s go out for a drink.
8 INT. SETH’S APARTMENT 8
Seth and Shelly stumble back into the apartment. They
fall to the bed, start kissing, and the scene fades out.
9 EXT. BEACH – DAY (DREAM)
9
In this flash, the older pale woman, the older pale man,
Seth and the pale man are trying to escape the nuclear
explosion. The van finally stops at a small house. The
older pale man carries Seth in his arms while the older
pale woman carries the older pale boy in his arms. The
older pale man takes them to an underground tunnel.
OLDER PALE MAN
(Looks into Pale man’s eyes) Stay here with your
little brother for at least a week. Take care of
him and don’t EVER lose sight of him.
PALE MAN
(Tear runs down Pale Man’s face) But Dad! I
wanna go with you guys!
OLDER PALE MAN
WALT, somebody has to take care of Seth. You
know he is too young too fight! I’ll come back
to you, I promise Walt. I promise.
SETH
Dad, don’t leave us here, I can do this.
OLDER PALE MAN
Older Pale Man kneels down and looks into Seth’s eyes.
Your mother and I are doing this for your own
good. Now let us leave, time is running out.
Older Pale Man and Older Pale Woman both hug Walt and his
little brother Seth. Everyone is in tears. Older Pale Man
and Older Pale Woman exit underground tunnel. Steel exit
door slams to end the scene.
10 INT. SETH’S APARTMENT - NIGHT
10
Seth abruptly wakes up from his dream. Shelly is sleeping
next to him with her arm around his body.
SETH
(Lifts his head off the pillow)
DAAAAADDDDD!!!
SHELLY
Seth what’s wrong with you! It’s 4 in the
morning. Do you realize we gotta wake up in 2
hours? I’m getting sick n‘ tired of this. I
haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep in ages.
SETH
Ohh shut up I’m the reason you even have to wake
up in the morning. You wouldn’t even have a job
without me. So leave me alone. You have no idea
what I am going through.
SHELLY
I’m just worried about you. Do you want to go
see Dr. Rosen again? Maybe he can help you.
SETH
No, he gets paid to listen to other people’s
problems. He is not a doctor. (long pause) I’m
sorry...I didn’t mean to lose my temper.
Seth cannot go back to sleep so he stands up to go make
himself coffee. (More detail)
SETH
Go back to sleep and don’t worry about me. I can
solve my problems myself I don’t need anyone’s
help.
SHELLY
I just want you to be happy. It’s your birthday
in 2 days.
SETH
(Seth looks into Shelly’s eyes and pauses)
I don’t give a shit about my birthday.
(Seth walks out of the room and slams the door.)
Seth slowly walks into the kitchen and turns on the TV.
He grabs a few tissues to clean the blood dripping from
his nose. He then walks to the coffee machine to make
himself a cup of coffee. Seth goes sits down on a chair
and watches TV.
SETH
(Talking to himself) I know something can cure
this pain. I can’t take these lucid dreams
anymore. Maybe I just need food. Real food. I
need to find myself a dead body.
Seth puts on his coat and exits the apartment. Seth takes
the elevator down and walks to his silver BMW. Seth
drives to the graveyard in light rain.
11 INT. CAR NIGHT 11
Seth is driving and the radio weather man can be faintly
heard through the car’s speakers. Seth begins changing
stations on the touch screen of the radio. As he is
switching stations, a bolt of lightning lights up the
interior of the car. The audience sees a dark figure in
the rearview mirror that Seth does not.
12 EXT. GRAVEYARD – NIGHT 12
Seth parks in the graveyard. The rain has turned into a
thunderstorm. He gets out of his car and moves to the
trunk. He opens the trunk and pulls out a poncho and a
shovel. He walks through the headstones until he finds a
fresh grave. He begins to dig feverishly. During the
process of digging he begins to hear footsteps squishing
on the ground around the grave and looks around. He
finally gets the casket out of the ground and begins to
snack. After finishing his meal, he begins to make his
way back to the car when a flash of lightning allows him
to see the shadowy figure yet again.
SETH
Who’s there!?!?
After another flash of lightning he realizes the figure
is gone.
13 INT. SPICE CLUB IN DOWNTOWN NEW YORK 13
The scene opens with Shelly talking to Seth on her cell
phone. Only Shelly appears in the scene. Seth’s voice is
overdubbed. She is standing in front of the club.
SHELLY
\
Hey babe, are you off the set yet?
SETH
Ya I’m walking back to the apartment as we
speak.
SHELLY
Walk to Spice instead. I have a little surprise
for you.
SETH
I’m not in the mood Shelly I’m exhausted.
SHELLY
Seth it’s your birthday, can we do something
enjoyable for once.
SETH
Sweetie I’m really tired. I really appreciate
you wanting to do something but I would much
rather just relax.
SHELLY
Another morgue delivered a dead body over here
for your birthday. I didn’t want to ruin the
surprise but you had to be difficult.
SETH
I guess I can make an appearance. But I’m only
gonna stay for a few hours.
SHELLY
Deal. I also have a little surprise for you at
home.
14 EXT. NEW YORK STREETS EN ROUTE TO SPICE CLUB 14
Seth is walking down the street on his phone.
SETH
Ok sweetie, I’m excited to see it...I love you
too. Bye.
Seth continues on his way towards the club when he
suddenly notices a shadowy figure down an alleyway that
appears to be the same from the graveyard. The man is
wearing a hoodie which covers his face. He stops and
stares at the individual, which he suddenly notices, has
grey skin. We hear what sounds like his heart begin to
pound. He begins to move toward the person.
SETH
Hey! Who are you!?!
The man quickly turns his head revealing half of his face
to Seth. Seth seems to recognize the face but can’t place
who it is. Before he can see more the grey skinned man
bolts off. Seth gives chase
SETH
Wait!!!Stop!!!
After a short chase down the alley, Seth catches the man
by his shoulders. He slams the man into the wall and
rips off his hood revealing the man’s entire face. Seth
is shocked at who it is and falls into another
vision/dream.
15 INT. UNDERGROUND TUNNEL (DREAM) 15
We see through Seth’s eyes his brother Walt standing and
staring at the closed steel door. Walt suddenly turns to
look at Seth showing us his face for the very first time
in the dreams.
WALT
Well Seth, I guess we’re on our own for now.
16 EXT. ALLEYWAY EARLY EVENING 16
The scene picks up where scene 14 left off.
SETH
Walt?!?
WALT
Hello dear brother. I guess we have a few things
to talk about.
SETH
How are you here? They told me I was the only
one alive. The only Zombie left. How did you
hide away all those years? Why didn’t you come
back before?
WALT
Ohhh Seth. You didn’t think I would miss my
little brother’s birthday. While you’ve been
modeling and acting, I’ve been living the life
we were all supposed to live. Are you happy with
the way you live with those fresh-fleshy
bastards?
SETH
Well it’s not like I had a choice. I was young
and alone. My big brother left me to rot in an
underground tunnel.
WALT
Well if it hadn’t been for you, I would have
died in honor just like mom and dad did. But I
had to stay behind and care for poor little
Seth. I couldn’t take another minute in that
tunnel with you. I was starving. I needed fresh
flesh.
SETH
You ran out on the only responsibility that dad
gave you. I’m very disappointed in you.
WALT
Don’t worry, you won’t have to be disappointed
for long (grinning).
Walt knocks Seth unconscious. Seth drops to the ground
and sees Walt footsteps slowly fade out.
17 EXT. ALLEYWAY LATER EVENING 17
Seth awakes to the sound of police sirens rushing down a
nearby street. He sits up and rests his head against a
brick wall. He slowly climbs to his feet and begins
stumbling out of the alley. He decides to make his way
towards Club Spice to tell Shelly what had happened. As
he approaches the club he notices flashing lights and
several bystanders gathered around the entrance.
Suddenly one of the bystanders notices him and begins to
scream.
BYSTANDER
(Pointing and yelling) There he is! There’s the
son-of-a-bitch that did it!
Seth turns to run in the direction he had come from.
POLICE OFFICERS
Freeze! Stop him! Don’t let him get away!
Seth is able to evade the officers by hiding in a
dumpster during a short chase.
18 INT. SETH’S APARTMENT 18
Seth enters the apartment out of breath and looking
scared. He rushes into the apartment.
SETH
Julia! Julia!
JULIA (the maid) comes running down the stairs, appearing
very concerned and worried.
JULIA
Why did you do it Seth? I thought you loved
her!?!
SETH
Do what!?! I didn’t do anything! I saw my older
brother and he knocked me out. I’ve been in an
alley for the past few hours...Wait, did you say
her? Shelly? What happened to Shelly?
JULIA
She’s dead! She was killed at the Spice Club
downtown! (runs to the sofa end table and picks
up television remote) It’s all over the news!
They’re saying you did it! (turning on
television)
SETH
What!?!
They both begin to watch the television news broadcast.
NEWSMAN
We have some breaking news. Reports from a
downtown nightclub indicate that the model/actor
zombie known as Seth has allegedly murdered his
co-worker, assistant, and more recently his
girlfriend Shelly Thomas. No word yet on a
police confirmation but we do have a reporter on
scene.
JULIA
See! I told you. The whole government is after
you. It won’t be long before they...
SETH
(Cutting her off) WALT?!? How could he? It had
to have been him. He’s the only one that could
have done it besides me. I have to find proof.
Suddenly, lights cut out and Swat breaks through the door
screaming at Seth to get on the ground. Seth decides to
make a run for the backdoor. As he’s running, the
officers begin to fire, hitting Seth several times. After
being hit, Seth falls backwards through the large window
of his apartment. He falls several stories to the
pavement below. Before dying, Seth sees his brother
standing on top of a building. Scene fades into another
dream.
19 INT. UNDERGROUND TUNNEL (DREAM)
Seth and Walt are both sitting in front of a bonfire
that they made in the tunnel.
SETH
You’ve all I got Walt. I have a feeling that Mom
and Dad are never gona come back.
WALT
Don’t worry Walt, I’ll never let you go. I will
always be by your side.
SETH
Walt, what would you do if you were the only
survivor and had to live with the humans?
WALT
I’d have all the food to myself. Do you imagine?
All those years we never had enough food to
ourselves. We lived a life of starvation. I
don’t see why no one even attempted to kidnap
humans. There’s nothing better than fresh flesh.
SETH
Are you kidding me Walt? They say that kind of
mentality is what started this war in the first
place!
WALT
Seth, what if I told you that I started this
war?
SETH
Then I’d have to kill you. (Laughing
sarcastically)
Walt walks away from his brother. Seth does not run after
him because he thinks that Walt will come back. Scene
fades out.
Shelly’s Night Outfit
Costume Design
This outfit is what Shelly wears inthe telephone conversation. Sincethe club is more high end in nature,her dress has to be too. It’s a bubble dress that has feather and rhinestone detail.
Seth’s Night Outfit
Seth is a very laid back kind of person even when he goes out, so a dress shirt, suit jacket, and jeans are good enough for him.

Though it may not look like much now,we envision this space to ultimately be the “underground”. Comsidering the timeof the movie takes place in the future,we can only assume that houses and basements will be the underground, based on if we build on top of what wehave due to the changing Earth. Ofcourse the space will be dressed up to look more so like vagabonds live there,rather than people.
