Dear American Milking Shorthorn Society Members: Your American Milking Shorthorn Society Board met on Novem-ber 30 and December 1 in Beloit, Wisconsin. Upfront we need to share that AMSS has faced financial challenges in the last couple of years. While income has declined from AMSS Syndicates, the Journal and registrations, costs have slowly risen while fees have re-mained constant since 2007. The result is that we have had to move $30,000 in the last two years from investments to cover operations. While the investments have solid returns they have not been enough to cover the short fall in operations. The Finance Committee gave long thought to the situation and reported to the AMSS Board. After serious and extended discussion the Board voted to raise fees as sug-gested by the Finance Committee in order to balance the operations budget in 2013. The fees were raised effective January 1, 2013 as follows:• All registrations to be raised by $5 except for cattle over 24

months of age.• Classification to be raised by $1 a head. • AMSS Express to be raised by $2 per animal with the addition

of another break out: 0 to 80 cows $19.00 81 to 160 cows 17.50 161 to 241 cows 16.00 241 cows and over 14.00 The Board also reviewed the All-American contest. The current projection is that it will cost $7,500 to print in 2013. After review of income (entry and nomination fees) and a failed motion to raise all entry fees to $10 the Board passed the following: Beginning for the 2013 All-American contest entry fees for the Open contest will rise by $5 bringing the entry fee to $15 for indi-viduals and $25 for Best Three. The fee for a nomination will rise by $10 to be $60 for an individual and $90 for Best Three. The Junior entry fee will rise by $10 to $30. There are a number of positives to report. The Foundation Fund has year to date received $9,000 in donations. As stipulated in the Foundation Policy, 10% of the Value of the Fund needs to be spent each year in promotion, advertising and travel. $900 was put into the budget for promotion from the Foundation (note year end will show a decent growth of invested Foundation Funds as well). Fur-ther the Oklahoma-Arkansas-Texas Association has donated $2,000 with the stipulation that the funds be used for advertising in Graze and the Cattle Connection. This combination allows AMSS to return the advertising budget to $4,000 with only $1,100 from operations. To help defray costs relating to awards the Board approved send-

ing a letter in this package seeking members who would wish to sponsor awards at Conventions and Shows. You can help promote the breed and get advertising for your farm at the same time. Some members may have heard about the following great gift to AMSS. The American Milking Shorthorn Society and AMSS Foun-dation are the largest single recipients of the Jim King Estate. One half of the money received from Jim’s estate is to be used at the dis-cretion of the AMSS Board and one-half of the funds to be placed in the Foundation. While we do not know the final sum the Board did take action to move the first $30,000 received back under the Board discretion element into Board investments, to replace the funds that have been removed to cover operations the last couple of years. The only other action that the Board took relating to Jim’s estate is the creation of the Jim King National Champion Triple Crown. Be-ginning September 1, 2013 at the time of registration breeders will, for $1, have the option of nominating their heifers for their lifetime to the Jim King Triple Crown. To win the Triple Crown a cow must win Grand Champion at three of the four National Shows in one year, with one of the shows being the International at World Dairy Expo. Currently the prize will be $2,500. The Board is looking at other ways to expand the Jim King Triple Crown, stay tuned. Clint Cribbet was the mind behind this exciting idea. In other action the Board voted to: Create a committee to research having a second National Sale us-ing online and video format. The goal is to expand the availability of Milking Shorthorns to more buyers. Clint Cribbet was appointed Chair person. Motion passed. The Board voted to request that the World Dairy Expo return to the previous format for Judge selection for the International Show. This was at the request of the All-American/Show Committee. Mo-tion passed. The Board voted to initiate an All-American Lifetime Merit Class in 2014. Requirements will be 100,000 pounds milk, 4,000 pounds fat or 3,500 pounds protein. This was at the request of the All-Amer-ican/Show Committee. Motion passed. The Board voted to recommend that the Junior Society add the Cindy Climer Total Performance Cow at all National Junior Shows. Motion passed. Please note that the AMSS Board only recommends actions to the Junior Society. The AMSS Juniors are a self-govern-ing body who establish their own policy and procedures. The Board voted to add the color: “White with Red Marks”. This color is described as 25% red or less. Motion passed. The Board voted to initiate the Red, White and Roan Club. This award will recognize animals once they have finished their milk pro-ducing careers and have left the farm. To qualify a cow must meet two of the following levels: 150,000 pounds milk, 6,000 pounds fat, 5,250 pounds protein. Motion passed. The Board voted to initiate the AMSS Milk Quality Award to

The Winter Board Meeting was held the first weekend in De-cember at the National Office in Beloit. The meeting was lively at times and the enthusiasm was contagious. Many

old items were reviewed and new ideas brought to the table. The motions passed at this meeting are listed in this Journal. A couple of new ideas were visited and it was decided to follow through. First, a bull book will be compiled with all bulls available, including those from AI Studs as well as individual breeders. The Society will pay to put this booklet together this year but in the future there will be a charge to include your bulls’ information. Another item that the

board thought would be useful is an issue of the Journal dedicated to Dual Purpose. In addition, in this Journal they also decided to include and highlight Genetic Expansion animals. Genetic Expan-sion has been an integral part of the expansion of our breed and this will show the impact of this program. Now is the time for reviewing 2012 – looking at the projects ac-complished and completed but sometimes understanding what items did not work. We lost some key people that were very influential in our breed and they will be missed. I feel the best way to honor them is to push forward and be the best we can be. They would expect nothing less! Thanks to the board members who got on Facebook and made our goal of 3,000 registrations a reality.

Meet the Future of the Milking Shorthorn Society

Ashlynn Foster

Ashlynn Foster is the 13-year-old daugh-ter of Mark and Nichole Foster. She

is a seventh grader at Middleberry Union Middle School in Vermont where she is in the band and choir and a defensive player on her soccer team. She is also a member of the Milking Shorthorn and Brown Swiss Junior Associations. She is involved with her church youth group, and takes sew-ing and crafts and of course, dairy in 4-H. Ashlynn has been in the showring since she could walk she said. “It’s like a family tra-dition,” she said, “Mom grew up on a dairy

farm and showed Swiss. Dad worked on the commercial side with dairy cows. Mom and Grandpa taught me all I know.” And they taught her well. Ashlynn was in the winner’s circle quite a bit this sea-son with her Fall Yearling heifer, Kellogg-Bay Liriano Nettie EXP who was Junior Champion at the International Junior show in Madison, WI, Reserve Jr. Champion at the Eastern National Junior show in Harris-burg, PA and she was Junior Champion at the state and local fairs. Ashlyn also won showmanship at the Eastern National in her age division. Ashlynn was very involved in acquiring and developing her heifer. When asked why she wanted a Milking Shorthorn she replied, “I wanted something different and unique. I like the color and attitudes of the Milking Shorthorns. Nettie came from the neighbors who had Milking Shorthorns, Claudia Allen.” Ashlynn says she was re-sponsible for breaking Nettie and getting her ready to go to the shows. Her heifer is due in March and she is hoping for a heifer calf as well as expecting a great udder on her heifer so she can continue showing her as a two-year-old this year.

Ashlynn says that although she doesn’t live on the farm, she helps out all she can on weekends and in the summer, feeding calves and making sure the show cows are ready to go when the show season comes around.

The American Milking Shorthorn...

Functional & Elegant

recognize outstanding genetics and man-agement through somatic cell counts. Herds will qualify and receive the award if their yearly DHIA SCC average is less than 150,000. Motion passed. The Board voted to live stream the 2013 National Sale if capabilities exist and the cost is $500 or less. Motion passed. The Board voted to accept the bid from Ohio to host the 2016 National Conven-tion in the Columbus, Ohio, area. Motion passed. The Board decided to leave Cindy Clim-er’s seat open until the election at the 2013 Annual Meeting. The delegates will then vote on Cindy’s replacement per the By-laws of AMSS. For 2013 keep the dates of May 29 till June 1 in mind for the National Convention, National Heifer Show and National Sale. The Heifer Show and Sale will be held on June 1. Considering the timing now is the time to think seriously about your National Sale entries. Two pedigrees were in the recently mailed packets for two bulls that are in the AMSS Syndicates Program for 2013. The first is GMC Ace Hal-ET to be sampled with Se-lect Sires, the second is Zenas Kourt Zippo to be sampled with Accelerated. Both of these bulls have 15 shares available for $200. For your $200 you receive 20 units of semen and the knowledge that you are help-ing to advertise and promote the American Milking Shorthorn. Our goal is to return to the times when AMSS Syndicates contrib-uted $6,000 to $10,000 for promotion. State Secretaries please remember to get your state membership lists into the office as soon as possible, it helps in both account-ing and for planning the Annual meeting.

SoapboxContinued from Page 4

2013 will be bring new changes and challeng-es. The first item of business for your board will be to hire a new Executive Secretary. This will take some time and we will need the cooperation and understanding of every member as items might take a bit longer than normal to complete in the office. We want to thank David for his time and dedication to the Red, White, and Roan. His knowl-edge, not only of the breed but his genetic background, has been valuable in addressing the many issues facing the breed during his tenure. We know David will be available to help guide us through this transitional period as we search for, and ultimately hire his successor. We wish David the very best in his next adventure. The Society is not in a good financial posi-tion. Your board is being very responsible and has raised fees for the first time in five years to help us reach a break even level. The Board explored all programs to put us in this position. The future looks bright with all the new ideas and programs that are under consideration. The board is looking at breed improvement in all sections of the breed. With everyone working together success is inevitable! The board discusses, reviews all options, and makes decisions. The goal is always consistent – breed improvement. Working with staff is essential and communication has improved throughout the year. Your board is fully engaged and we realize that success takes time and all the members working together. The board hopes to lead and teach in this next year but also requests your input whenever you think we need guidance.

Cheri Oechsle has been hired as lead editor effective January 2 of Pure-bred Publishing. Oechsle returns to

Purebred and the Guernsey Breeders' Jour-nal with over 25 years of media and mar-keting experience as well as a strong back-ground in the dairy industry. A graduate of The Ohio State University in dairy science and ag communications, Oechsle has served as editor of numerous publications, including the Wisconsin Hol-stein News and Guernsey Breeders’ Jour-nal. She has worked in ag radio, print and marketing in Central and Northwest Ohio. She has spent the past six years as the Mar-keting Director for the Niswonger Perform-ing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio in Van Wert where she handled all areas of graphic design, marketing, sponsorships, fundrais-ing, and artist marketing for the 1200 seat venue. Raised on a registered Holstein farm, she traveled the tanbark trail of state and na-tional shows with Muddy Lane Holsteins. She and her husband, Jim stay actively in-volved in the dairy industry showing their Jamaro Guernseys and JaCher Holsteins with their four sons. Oechsle and her hus-band also serve as junior advisors for the Ohio Junior Holstein Association where their three youngest sons, Harrison, Matt and Korey are active participants. The old-est son, Stephan and his wife Crystal still maintain an active role in breeding and heifer raising decisions. The Oechsles are members of the Ohio Guernsey Breeders Association as well

as serving on additional committees for the Ohio Holstein Association. Oechsle is also a member of the Van Wert County Farm Focus Committee, Extension Levy Committee and leads the Worship Team at their local Methodist Church. She serves as parent rep for a variety of her sons’ sports teams as well. Oechsle will work from both the Colum-bus office and her home in Van Wert, Ohio. She says, “I look forward to returning full throttle into the dairy industry as editor of these breed magazines and can’t wait to get out on the road this spring to renew old ac-quaintances and make new ones. One of my goals is to work with each breed association to find ways to increase communication to their members through both the printed and online media realm.” To contact Cheri, call her at 614.339.5393 or email: [email protected].
