Today’s ObjectiveI can explain how the themes from WWI still are impacting our world today.

NATO’s essential purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.Established in 1949 (After WWII)

NATO’s MissionPOLITICAL - NATO promotes democratic values and encourages consultation and cooperation on defence and security issues to build trust and, in the long run, prevent conflict.

MILITARY - NATO is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. If diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military capacity needed to undertake crisis-management operations. These are carried out under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty - NATO’s founding treaty - or under a UN mandate, alone or in cooperation with other countries and international organizations.

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Note: Some themes may be more apparent than others, but work to identify connections to each theme.

You will read individual articles and then share you’re the main ideas of the article and the connections to the themes that you found within them.

You will read articles about the Paris Terrorist Attacks and explore Newsela to find general news articles.
