Recognize Cause and Effect How do you think the cult of domesticity that developed during the late 1800s affected the women’s suffrage movement? Explain your reasoning.

SAMPLE ANSWER:The cult of domesticity hindered the efforts of the women’s suffragemovement. Popular publications and songs during this period created animage of the ideal woman as a tender caregiver who provided a nest forher children and a peaceful refuge for her husband. This stereotypeestablished a woman’s place as in the home, not in the world of businessor politics. Supporters of women’s suffrage had to overcome this idealizedimage of women to show that women are equally capable of participatingin business and politics.
