Reflections on the

Cover Page

The original Marathi article of Shri Shreedhar Parab

published under the column ‘Mukhaprushtha

Pahatana’ in Yoga Varta's issue for the month of

December 2016 has been excellently translated into

English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of

39th batch of YTTC). The said English version of Shri

Shreedhar Parab's article in Marathi is being

published hereunder with profound thanks to Shri

Nitin Tawde (Mob. : 9819186655).

Moment the images of Yoga Sadhaka, Soorya

Namaskar Sadhaka, Walkers & Cyclists were seen on

the cover page of Yoga Varta along with the appeal -

‘Let’s Welcome New Year with Health-Promoting

Resolutions’, a long list of such resolutions got

unfolded in the mind.

New year is the time to scour in the memoirs of the

past year for the pleasant and bitter happenings and

build new resolutions in mind. Really, new year gives birth to new hopes.

New year is like one more new enlightened pathway discovered in the

long journey of life. It is like a new golden opportunity to step on this

enlightened path with new vigour, enthusiasm and confidence to

accomplish the resolutions. But to make this opportunity a golden one, all

the resolutions in our mind have to be in accordance with nature, laws of

nature, society and must comply with all of them. Not that all resolutions

are auspicious. But those who deviate from path of virtue, rules of

nature and society by giving rise to inappropriate or ill concepts in

mind and build resolutions thereon have to pay heavy price for the same.

Yoga Varta : January 2017 6

`moJdmVm©

Life of those who behave irrationally, deviating away from the laws of

nature and social justice, are more likely to be infected with

disappointment. It is quite easy to avert such disappointment. Regular

and devout practice of Yoga under proper guidance, helps the Sadhaka

to consolidate rational thinking powers that doesn't allow the antisocial,

irrational or other negative thoughts to ride over his mind and thus he

can strengthen his ability to differentiate between the good and the

evil. Sadhaka who imbibes in his mind the resolution of practising

Yogabhyas with consistency, is awarded with sound physical, mental,

emotional and spiritual health. As a result, all his actions reflect natural

ease, gaiety and proficiency. The various good resolutions planned in

mind by such Sadhaka, are then timely accomplished easily, with

enhanced confidence. Then it becomes possible for such a person to

achieve, the otherwise seemingly impossible distant and attractive

milestones of the career, more comfortably. With these thoughts in

mind, I recalled a beautiful poster seen sometime in the past. It depicted

a picture of a bird soaring with its wings spread, above a high mountain

peak. The picture was captioned, ‘You can, if you really feel you can!’,

meaning you must first have confidence in your capabilities, then only

you can soar high in the ‘sky of resolutions’ and fly there fearlessly to

scale new heights in life!

Some days back, I had read Shri Purushottam Berde’s article in

Marathi titled ‘Sankalpa’ which was published in Marathi newspaper

‘Maharashtra Times’. There the author says - ‘Sankalpa’ means a strong

resolution, an order given to one’s own mind, an agreement with the

mind or to say in today’s language - ‘Sankalpa’ is like a chip of any

determination uploaded in the computer of mind. The importance of

resolution is universally accepted since ancient time. Gods-demons,

saints, rishi-munis, many kings, valiant warriors are known to have

acquired great success on the strength of their strong resolutions. Thus,

it is proved that resolution has tremendous power in it. Person’s inner

strength is put to test when mind is made to comply the order given to

7 Yoga Varta : January 2017

`moJdmVm©

it on the strength of intellect. The extent of the success of the resolution

depends on how much strong and unshakable is the determination

therefor. However, be rest assured that on successful completion of the

health-promoting resolutions, the person will be bestowed with an

excellent health, personality development and blissful experience of

living a successful life. We can have many such good resolutions. The

most sought after new year’s good resolution by many amongst us is to

rise early in the morning, by retiring timely to bed and to go for morning

walk in the nearby park or garden. Many people will have resolution to

practise regularly either in the morning or evening Yoga and/or Soorya

Namaskar or any exercise of their choice. Some of them would decide

to enjoy having a leisure, aromatic bath after a good oil massage and

application of ‘Utane’ i.e. a special fragrant herbal paste used as a scrub

before bath, at least once in a week or fortnight. Sports lovers would

decide to devote quality time for jogging, running, cycling, swimming or

pay more attention towards sports like badminton, hockey, table tennis,

tennis, football, basketball, etc. Music and art lovers would go for

honing skills in their respective choices like singing, dance, acting, etc.

Few of them would simply spare more time for cultivating hobbies of

their liking and regularly devote some time for good reading-writing.

Acquisition of necessary knowledge and skills to prosper expectantly in

business or job could be the resolution for some of them. Outings in the

nature, planning for domestic or international tours, or to spare time for

entertainment, escaping from daily busy schedule too, could be a

resolution for few. Some people will decide to devote time exclusively

for the family and self from their hectic schedule. Bringing about

positive changes and improvement in one’s own behaviour after

becoming aware about the bad effects of temper, anger, jealousy and

the way they hurt others, could also be a resolution for few. Getting rid

of the negativity and pessimism from the behaviour and abreast

positivity to become optimistic could be the resolution for some people.

Resolution of new year for some could be to give up or at least reduce

Yoga Varta : January 2017 8

`moJdmVm©

the consumption of alcohol, smoking or tobacco, Gutakha, etc. After

realising the ill effects of fast food, tasty but spicy and oily food from

hotels leading to fat accumulation, excessive consumption of tea or

coffee, soft drinks like Cola and Pepsi, some people will have resolution

to keep such food and drinks at bay. Keeping in mind our obligation

towards family and society, conscious development of friendship,

relationship and direct or indirect participation in social activities for

the betterment of society can also be a resolution for some.

However, mere preparation of an extensive list of good resolutions

prior to or at the onset of new year may not fetch desired results. It is,

therefore, necessary to see which amongst many such resolutions are

really imbibed within. It is observed that many times we make the

resolutions quite superficially and therefore, they don't last even for

months but wane away within a short span of few days. Lack of our

earnestness towards them is the main cause behind it. Hence, only

those resolutions, for which we would be serious enough, should be

adopted, to avoid such disappointment. Thereafter, we must prepare

ourselves to do whatever best that is needed, very sincerely,

systematically and devotedly to accomplish the resolutions we earnestly

wish to adopt for ourselves. Then we can be assured that all the forces

in the Universe will conspire to help us in accomplishing our desired

resolutions.

You too must have decided on some such good resolutions for

yourself for this new year. Wishing you all very good luck

wholeheartedly for attaining success in accomplishment of these

resolutions, let me request you affectionately that all of us should

unanimously adopt one resolution for sure, that under any

circumstances we will not lose balance and not allow our peace of mind

to get disturbed. We shall obviously take all possible measures, sincerely

to maintain the blissful state of mind. To see all our good resolutions

accomplished in this new year, it is necessary that our mind remains

favourably disposed and peaceful. At some point of time each one of us

9 Yoga Varta : January 2017

`moJdmVm©

must have experienced that the concentration, steadiness and calmness

of the mind is attained quickly and easily when it is peaceful. Maharshi

Patanjali has stated in the aphorism below what exactly is required to

be done to maintain this serenity of mind.

_¡ÌrH$ê$Um_w{XVmonojmUm§ gwIXþ…InwÊ`mnwÊ`{df`mUm§^mdZmV{üÎmàgmXZ_²&& (nm.`mo.gy. 1.33)

This means that feelings of pleasure, pain, virtue and vice (observed in

other persons) should be responded through friendliness, compassion,

joyfulness and equanimity respectively. This will keep the mind in

blissful state. A general emotion is to feel jealous or sometimes even to

be irate about the state of happiness of the other person. Sadhaka’s

mind can remain calm and attain the state of happiness and pleasure

and can develop emotions of love and affection about the happy person

if he imbibes in his mind that the other person's happiness too can bring

happiness in his own life. Actually, the ultimate objective of life, is to

have concern for the happiness of others. In a way, we are only helping

ourselves to be happy. It is a common feeling to have sympathy for the

sorrow of other person or to have pity for the sad person. There could

be a possibility of the trace of pride or even a feeling of relief from not

having to suffer the same, in the minds of those who express their

sympathy. This kind of ego or ill feelings doesn't exist if there is

compassion instead of mere sympathy about the other person. Reason

being compassion is a very natural, unselfish emotion. We should

extend a helping hand selflessly and empathetically to those in distress,

if we believe that our act can ward off their problems. Such empathetic

behaviour helps in maintaining our blissful state of mind. Our mind

should be content with happiness about the good work being carried

out by others, without being jealous. The habit of acknowledging good

deeds of others needs to be nurtured. We must feel joyous and not

jealous from within, while communicating with or being in company of

good-natured people. Thus the pleasant state of mind can be

maintained. Equanimity is to overlook the ill deeds of other persons by

Yoga Varta : January 2017 10

`moJdmVm©

adopting a non-judgemental stance without going to extremities

impulsively and irrationally. This equanimity leads to positive

introspection helping us to maintain inner bliss unobstructed. Also

helpful in maintaining the inner peace is to remain neutral, without any

prejudice, about the thoughts, actions or strategies of certain people

even if we dislike them, or differ in opinion. However, all said and done

we must remember that these four emotions namely, friendliness,

compassion, joyfulness and equanimity empathy, are not so easy to

adopt. A Sadhaka has to practise devotedly to imbibe them with

perseverance and consistency. Further, this should happen with natural

ease. And not artificially.

So, let us have a resolution to do something good and constructive

in this new year by taking inspiration from the cover page of Yoga Varta.

Undoubtedly this New Year - 2017 will certainly be a memorable one for

all of us in terms of health, peace, happiness and contentment if we

work in full confidence for accomplishment of our resolutions by

adopting the Yogic lifestyle and respecting the nature, it’s laws and

society!

TRUTH, GOODNESS AND BEAUTY

Purity of thoughts enables a person to appreciate

and love 'Truth, Goodness and Beauty' in life. In our

mind, there are always some ugly, some unworthy and

some unnatural thoughts as also the seeds of some

worthy, natural and beautiful thoughts. Almost all

normal human beings, commoners, saints or even

saitans possess such thoughts. The difference may be only in their

number or degree of strength.

If you intensely think of truth, goodness and beauty, these thoughts

would soon percolate into your behaviour and make your mind more

pure, removing impurities from mind. If the seeds of ugly, unworthy and

unnatural thoughts in the mind become stronger than the good

thoughts of truth, goodness and beauty, the same would exert adverse

effects on the person's mind and behaviour. So, it is for a person to

decide whether he wants to become a slave or master of his mind. One

can intensly and genuinely think accordingly and become an ardent

lover of truth, goodness and beauty i.e. purity or fall prey to ugly,

unworthy and unnatural thoughts and become impulsive and indulgent

of impure behaviour.

Truth, goodness and beauty, forming a desirable trio, are inter-

connected. If one starts thinking, concentrating upon and behaving as

per one of them, one gets the purity of mind and the other two of the

trio automatically follow the first.

Once Mahatma Gandhi went to see great poet Rabindranath Tagore

Yoga Varta : January 2017 12

`moJdmVm©

at Shanti Niketan. Both of them were philosophers, thinkers and more

importantly, the worshippers and lovers of this desirable trio i.e. ' Truth,

Goodness and Beauty'. Gandhiji used to love and stress more on 'Truth'

whereas Rabindranath used to love and stress more on ' Beauty'.

Rabindranath welcomed and received Gandhiji. They talked on various

subjects. Gandhiji wanted to see Shanti Niketan and its activities.

Therefore, both of them planned to start next day at 9 O'clock morning

to go around Shanti Niketan. Accordingly, on the next day, they finished

their breakfast and became ready to walk. Before they could start

walking, Rabindranath remebered something and said, "Gandhiji, kindly

excuse me. I have forgotten to comb my hair. Within two minutes, I will

comb and set my hair. Please wait for a while." Saying this, he went

inside the room and Gandhiji sat outside. Two minutes passed, five

minutes passed, ten minutes passed. Gandhiji was waiting for

Rabindranath. By then, he became very anxious to see what exactly

Rabindranath was doing inside. Therefore, he entered the room. He saw

that Rabindranath was sitting in front of the mirror combing and setting

his hair in a very relaxed way so as to make himself attractive.

When Rabindranath saw that Gandhiji was observing him, he said,

"Gandhiji, I am a lover of beauty. To me, beauty is God. I love the nature

which is beautiful and attractive. The trees, their branches, leaves,

flowers, birds, animals, mountains, rivers, sky, etc. are all beautiful

because I believe that God exists in them. I sincerely feel that we also

must keep ourselves beautiful and attractive. That is the real worship to

God. In my younger age, I could do combing and setting of my hair within

a minute or two but now that I am old, it is taking pretty long time to

do the same. Kindly pardon me for this delay.''

Gandhiji carefully and silently listened to Rabindranath's views and

soon got himself engrossed in pondering over those thoughts relatied

to that desirable trio - 'Truth, Goodness and Beauty.'

TWO DAYS EXCURSION of YTTC Students

`moJ{ejH$ à{ejU dJm©Vrc {dÚmÏ`mªMrXmoZ {Xdgr` e¡j{UH$ ghc

Mrs Pradnya Patil, 40th YTTC, Vashi

‘Successful people build each other up. They motivate, inspire and

push each other for good cause.’ This was the essence of wonderful two

days’ Educational Excursion held at Karla, Lonavala organized by our

Yoga Vidya Niketan for the students of 40th YTTC, Vashi. The trip started

with journey from Yoga Bhavan, Vashi by two buses which started at

around 7:30 am in the morning of Saturday, the 3rd December 2016.

The giggling, laughter sounds and playful melodious songs from

Antakshari and the ‘Kombda Aaravla’ & konkani songs by Rupesh made

the bus alive with full scale entertainment and we didn't even realize

when we reached our destination which was the beautiful complex

around Durga Parameshwari Temple at Karla, Lonavala. We were already

late to reach because of initial bus problem and later jam over toll naka.

So, immediately on arrival, we had wonderful breakfast of poha-tea/

coffee and we were given our accommodation which was seemingly like

beautiful hotel rooms with all necessary facilities especially with hot

water in that chilled Lonavala environment. Everything was functioning

so smooth which clearly showed that a lot of hard work, planning and

efforts were put in by our beloved teachers many days in advance to

make everything here, so organized. We got proper instructions, rules

and regulations explained well in time by our teachers and Savant sir.

There were so many activities held at excursion that we didn’t even

get half an hour spare time, but still we weren’t exhausted because of

lively environment prevalent there which started with debate and

discussions. The participants were well prepared due to which the

atmosphere filled with knowledge and educational waves on various

topics. In Debates, audience enjoyed being with different parties and

encouraging the participants. Teachers also gave a lot of encouragement

and motivation to every activity throughout those two days. After lunch,

we had ‘Vamakukshi’ for relaxation and ‘Maun Vrata’ explained by

Gholkar Sir. We also played games and quizzes organized by Das sir,

Amol sir, Santosh Sir and Vidya Madam. In the evening, we visited the

Ashram, its Temple, Cow Farm and Organic Farms. Ashram was very

peaceful as it is a sacred place. Then we had a lecture on

Ashtakumbhakas by Das sir who with his utmost humility and

knowledge, conducted the session with comfort and peace.

Next was dinner session followed by the most awaited 'Variety

Entertainment Programme'. As the name suggests, the entire program

was wonderfully performed by the participants. The melodious songs,

plays, fashion show and dances (many of them choreographed by

Swadesh Varanakar, popularly known as Swady, one of the participant of

40th YTTC) in colourful and traditional costumes became a wonderful

treat to the eyes. The program was compered by Vidya Madam. The

highlight of the program was the Yoga Dance by Mr. Dilesh Telawne and

his drama of Bhikari. Similarly, flexibility and body-mind coordination

exhibited by Rupesh Mayekar was also outstanding. The Sairat dance of

Swady spread laughter in the audience. The indo-western themed

Fashion Show was managed well with 25 participants on such a small

stage area. Everyone enjoyed all the performances. The program ended

with comedy fishponds read by Manjushree madam and Anita Madam.

The next morning all were asked to get up early. All were ready having

warm water bath before 6am. That day early morning began a Meditation

Workshop conducted by our loving Savant sir. He explained how we can

stable our Mind by performing 'Dhyana' with the five sensory organs. It

was a wonderful learning and meditating experience to all of us in that

lovely morning. Next, the Administration of Oath ceremony was

conducted, which gave us the lesson to ‘Disseminate the Knowledge of

Yoga with Humility, Sincerity and Devotion.’ Then Suryanamaskar session

was conducted by Savant sir and it gave us tremendous life-full energy and

heat in that cold morning. Then after breakfast, last round of discussions

was held. This was followed by very important training & information

session through which we were given general idea about forthcoming

events. Bandana madam informed about Annual Exhibition and Posters

display on ‘Yoga for Peace’, Anita Bidvai madam about Essay competition;

Neha madam gave fare idea of conducting Practical Project Workshop;

Nitin sir focused on importance and methods of publicity for Yoga Summer

Course. Savant sir explained the differences between the syllabuse,

duration, programmes, venues, fees, etc. of Yoga Summer Course and that

of Practical Project Workshop. He also informed that Yoga Summer Course

centers to be conducted under Vashi YTTC are divided into 4 zones and at

the end of this session we were asked to sit in 4 zonal groups as per our

convenience for conducting Yoga Summer Course and PPW. After lunch,

we could take rest and group photos which was followed by tea. The

excursion ended with Prize Distribution ceremony and Vote of Thanks.

People were happy with the prizes won. They congratulated each other

and took blessings from elders. The various activities held in two day’s

excursion built up the team-work quality in all of us and now we think, we

are not merely a team but one strongly united family. This is not because

we work together but because we respect, trust and care for each other.

This excursion brought all of us, the participants and teachers, closer to

each other with the bond of love and affection. With a smile and joy on

our faces, with contentment in our hearts and the beautiful memories in

our minds of the quality time spent at the Durga Parameshwari Temple,

Karla, we returned to Mumbai. We are very thankful to Nimbalkar Guruji

for this meticulously planned YTTC program and to all our loving teachers

who take so much of efforts to teach us the subject knowledge properly

and prepare us to become perfect Yoga Teachers!

 Mrs Hetal Nagda, YTTC, Dadar

The much talked and long awaited educational excursion for which all

the YVN’s 40th YTTC batch was waiting took place on 10th and 11th

December 2016. A divine holistic place Shree Durga Parmeshwari Temple

Trust complex of Chitrapur Saraswat Community was located, in the midst

of serenity at Karla near Lonavala. There, one experiences being close to

nature as it is surrounded by organic farms and Goshala. An amazing life

time learning experience which would never come back again and

memories would just stay in forever. A well-organized and disciplined

excursion was executed as per their high standard by YVN’s faculty. The

staying arrangement was in Swami Parijnanashram Arogyadhama

premises of the temple complex. The hospitality, the food served and

other facilities provided were very nice. The treatment received from the

management of the Trust was really commendable as accommodating

more than 100 people and providing them with delicious saatvik food, hot

water in early morning hours at 5 am was really a challenging task.

On the early morning of 10th Dec 2016, all teachers and students

gathered at YVN’s Dadar premises with their luggage and backpacks with

excitement at its peak. The bus started at 7.30 from Dadar and thereafter

picked up other participants from Sion and Chembur. The journey of

about 2 hrs. did not seem long as everybody was enjoying and singing

melody of old and new songs. On arrival at 10am, all the participants

were allotted rooms and then followed the breakfast. Everyone gathered

in hall for Discussion and Debate competition. The session started with

our YVN’s culture of chanting omkars followed by prayers.

After brainstorming discussion and debate, it was time for Yogic

Indoor Games specially designed by our teachers which everyone must

have played during childhood. Trust it, these games seemed so easy and

funny but they involved lot of mind and brain coordination and

alertness. It took us back to our golden childhood days. Everyone

seemed to have so much of fun and enjoyment. It was time for some tea

and coffee and chats. This excursion brought everyone so close to each

other inspite of the group they belonged to, whom they knew already.

It was more like a family now. Tea/coffee was followed by walk around

ashram, goshala, organic farms and visiting Durga Parameshwari temple.

After nature’s walk and experiencing freshness around, it was time to

get serious. Yes it was time to study for a while. The Lecture was on

Ashtakumbhakas by Shri Vishwanath Mahajan Sir. The lecture provided

very useful information on Pranayama and its 8 types mentioned in

Hathapradipika and Gherand Samhita. Impressive demonstration was

given by Ashish sir. Students were made to practise all the different

types of Pranayamas and their techniques were taught in detail which

made this subject easy to understand. Lecture was followed by dinner

which energised everyone for upcoming cultural events. The event was

hosted by our favourite Kamlesh Mam and Mitali Mam. Event was

inaugurated with omkar prayer followed by medley of dance

performances, lavani dance. Few of them sung their heart out with

beautiful melodious songs, witnessed regional Bengali dance

performance, also to add there was a short act by Modern Jyotishi who

conducts poojas, havans and marriages online through video chat. All

the audience present including teachers and students everybody

enjoyed the performance to the core. Last but not the least, awaited

event of the day was Fish Pond. Anxiety was all around as to whose

names would appear in Fish Pond. There was laughter all around as

Madhura mam and Mahesh sir started reading fish ponds. Day ended

with lots of learning experience and happy moments.

Day two i.e 11 December 2016 Sunday started well off early at 6 am

25 Yoga Varta : January 2017

in the morning with Workshop on Meditation by Shri Mahesh Sinkar sir.

Different aspects of meditation were brought to notice. Everyone was

very much engrossed in mind-calming experiences experimented with

all the five senses. The 90 minutes session ended with different

techniques of performing omkara and its soothing effect on our mind.

Meditation session was followed by Administration of Oath. Breakfast

was served therafter. After breakfast, it was time for brief discussion on

Yoga Summer Course, Practical Project and Posters Exhibition which was

quite informative and inspiring. All the participants got geared up for

the upcoming YVN events like poster making, essay competition,

practical project, yoga summer course. Good to see such smiling faces!

Again we had a very informative, impressive and inspiring session of

Group Discussion followed by Debate. Finally, all events came to an end

and now it was time for lunch. After lunch, the last activity of the

excursion was certificate and prize distribution to all the winners and

participants. Memories were built and bond became stronger amongst

everyone. The two day educational excursion came to an end with lots

of memories, lots of new learning, new bonds of friendship - in short,

altogether a different experience indeed! For two days staying together,

eating together and being together has strengthened our bonds of

friendship. For us, it was a program for total transformation of

personality. Thanks to YVN for arranging such a wonderful lifetime

experience of the residencial excursion for 40th YTTC batch!

 Ms. Neha Ghate, YTTC, Dadar

For two days educational excurtion, we started our journey at 7.00

am on Sunday the 10th Dec.2016 at Dadar YTTC venue with two full

packed buses and everyone siting along with their groups and prefered

group teachers. With Antakshari, lots of eating and exchange of food,

thoughts, views, lifes and literally seats, we didn't notice how time

passed by and we already have arrived at our excurtion venue. Super

excited gazes trying to get a glimps of the venue, i.e. Aarogyadhama and

Durga Parameshwari Temple at Karla, Lonavala, got very happy with the

very site of the clean, calm and serene beauty of the temple, the ashram

and the open space with surrounding of mountains.

As we had alread chosen our 7 partners to share rooms there was

no hurry to go inside the Aarogyadhama as we all just wanted to be

mesmorised by the location. Finally, with bit of reluctance and bit of

excitement to know our roommates better, everybody got settled into

rooms. The rooms were neat, clean, tidy and cozy, very homely and

comfortable. People giving seva at the Aashram were very kind. We had

an amazing satvik breakfast of upama. It was followed by tea/coffee.

We then settled down in the auditorium for the most awaited program

i.e. disussion and debate.

The first discussion was between 'S' and 'G' group. All the

participants did very well. We could feel the confidance boost in each

individual present an stage. The subjects were studied very well and

everyone spoke very impressively. Debate between 'K' and 'S' group was

also very interesting. It did clear a lot of points on Shuddhi Kriyas. Now,

I feel much more confident to handle queries of my students in future

on this topic.

The best part was the announcement of results post each event. I

think that dissolved our competition mode. I was in 'P' group disscussion

as moderator and hence, a good amount of pressure was built on me to

do the disscussion as good as that of today and all my friends in

disussion were supertensed.

After having nice filling lunch and a bit of rest (no one really rested

though), we had very intersting indoor games. Hats off to Sinkar sir for

conducting the games with high energy, enthusiasm and promptness.

Here we lost all our inhibitions about our image in the group and each

one of us enjoyed every bit of it thoroughly.

Visit to Ashram was very relaxing part. The view of the mountains,

ingrown vegetables, the cows inspired us to think on how far away we

are going from nature and natural living. I thanked all the food chain in

my heart right from mother earth, farmer, all animals and persons who

take part in bringing my everyday food to my table.

Lecture on 'Ashtakumbhakas' by Mahajan sir alongwith

demonstration by Ashish sir was very informative. Also, as it was

accompained by practice, it helped our information being turned into

knowledge.

Dinner was cooked with love. Garam garam simple but tasty khichadi

with ‘Amruttulya Kadhi’ in that cold winter night next to nandadip of

temple and soothing moonlight was just a perfect way to rewind.

I was pleasantly surprised to see so many students participating in

cultural/entertainment program. Lovely dances, song sung, poems told,

small acts, all was very nice. I felt like witnessing school gathering. All

who participated poured their hearts into their act by doing the dressing

and everything so aptly and with full enthusiasm. The night fell really

short, or I think we made it short by chatting and enjoying company of

our groups in rooms.

Next morning waking up at 5 am, bathing and getting ready for

Meditation Workshop at 6 am was a most difficult task I felt; but the

workshop was excellent. This was my very first time to learn/understand

any Meditation. Omkar Meditation presented by Mahesh Sinkar sir was

very inspiring, felt like 'must include' in every day practice.

Thereafter, the Oath taking Ceremony was conducted very

impressively by Parab sir. It put right responsibilities on our shoulders as

Yoga Teacher and I think, it was a must for us. It gave our goals a clarity

of the path. Taking oath in front of Parab sir was an event of one of a

kind as Parab sir is the backbone inspiration for all of us, for all his

students so far. All felt blessed taking oath in his presence.

After Summer Yoga Cource, Exhibition details (we were super anxious

by then) came the turn of our discussion. We did well for others but not

so well for ourselves. The other group was very strong contestant and

we loved competing with them. Finally, we won-Yeey!!! The discussion

was good too though not as good as that held on previous day.

Yoga Varta : January 2017 28

`moJdmVm©

We had a very nice lunch, followed by group photos and selfies and

what not. And with lots of happiness and memories of Antakshari on

the go, we finally arrived at Mumbai with hope to meet soon in the next

class where we can share the pictures - ha ha!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank YVN and all our

dedicated teachers for giving us opportunity to witness such an amazing

event, extremely well-planned, well-executed, educational yet fun-filled

and competitive yet bonding. Thank you very much from all of us! This

inspired us to propagate the goodness that's in our teachers hearts to

the world. The true meaning of Yogic Living - simple yet interesting and

heart touching with genuinity and clarity of thoughts and actions!

KEEP THE SPARK ALIVE

...Today I am going to talk about keeping the spark shining. Or to

put it another way, how to be happy most, if not all the time. Imagine

the spark to be a lamp's flame. The first aspect is nurturing - to give

your spark the fuel, continuously. The second is to guard against storms.

To nurture, always have goals. It is human nature to strive, improve and

achieve full potential. In fact, that is success. It is what is possible for

you.

Nature designed with a random set of genes and circumstances in

which, we were born. To be happy, we have to accept it and make the

most of nature's design. Are you ready? Goals will help you do that.

I must add, don't just have career or academic goals. Set goals to

give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before

successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental

peace are all in good order. There is no point of getting a promotion on

the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back

hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.

You must have read some quotes - Life is a tough race, it is a

marathon or whatever. No, from what I have seen so far, life is one of

those races in nursery school, where you have to run with a marble in

a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there Is no point coming

first. Same with life, where health and relationships are the marble.

Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you

33 Yoga Varta : January 2017

`moJdmVm©

may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and

alive, will start to die.

Reasonable goals, balance and not taking it too seriously that will

nurture the spark. However, there are four storms in life that will

threaten to completely put out the flame. These must be guarded

against. These are disappointment, frustration, unfairness and

loneliness of purpose i.e. isolation.

Disappointment

Disappointment will come when your effort does not give you the

expected return. If things don't go as planned or if you face failure.

Failure is extremely difficult to handle, but those that do, come out

stronger. What did this failure teach me? is the question you will need

to ask. You will feel miserable. You will want to quit, like I wanted to

when nine publishers rejected my first book. Some IITians kill

themselves over low grades - how silly is that? But that is how much

failure can hurt you. But it's life. If challenges could always be overcome,

they would cease to be a challenge. And remember - if you are failing

at something, that means you are at your limit or potential. And that's

where you want to be.

Frustration

Disappointment's cousin is frustration, the second storm. Have you

ever been frustrated? It happens when things are stuck. This is

especially relevant in India. From traffic jams to getting that job you

deserve, sometimes things take so long that you don't know if you chose

the right goal. After books, I set the goal of writing for Bollywood, as I

thought they needed writers. I am called extremely lucky, but it took me

five years to get close to a release. Frustration saps excitement, and

turns your initial energy into something negative, making you a bitter

person. How did I deal with it? A realistic assessment of the time

involved - movies take a long time to make even though they are

watched quickly, seeking a certain enjoyment in the process rather than

the end result - at least I was learning how to write scripts, having a side

Yoga Varta : January 2017 34

`moJdmVm©

plan - I had my third book to write and even something as simple as

pleasurable distractions in your life - friends, food, travel can help you

overcome it. Remember, nothing is to be taken seriously. Frustration is

a sign somewhere you took it too seriously.

Unfairness

Unfairness - this is hardest to deal with, but unfortunately that is

how our country works. People with connections, rich dads, beautiful

faces, pedigree find it easier to make it – not just in Bollywood, but

everywhere. And sometimes it is just plain luck. There are so few

opportunities in India, so many stars need to be aligned for you to make

it happen. Merit and hard work is not always linked to achievement in

the short term, but the long term correlation is high, and ultimately

things do work out. But realize, there will be some people luckier than

you. In fact, to have an opportunity to go to college and understand this

speech in English means you are pretty damm lucky by Indian standards.

Let's be grateful for what we have and get the strength to accept what

we dont. I have so much love from my readers that other writers cannot

even imagine it. However, I don't get literary praise. It's ok. I dont look

like Aishwarya Rai, but I have two boys who I think are more beautiful

than her. It's ok. Don't let unfairness kill your spark.

Isolation

Finally, the last point that can kill your spark is isolation. As you grow

older you will realize you are unique. When you are little, all kids want Ice

Cream and Spiderman. As you grow older to college, you still are a lot like

your friends. But ten years later and you realize you are unique. What you

want, what you believe in, what makes you feel, may be different from

even the people closest to you. This can create conflict as your goals may

not match with others. And you may drop some of them. Basketball

captains in college invariably stop playing basketball by the time they

have their second child. They give up something that meant so much to

them. They do it for their family. But in doing that, the spark dies. Never,

ever make that compromise. Love yourself first, and then others.

35 Yoga Varta : January 2017

`moJdmVm©

There you go. I've told you the four thunderstorms - disappoint-

ment, frustration, unfairness and isolation. You cannot avoid them, as

like the monsoon they will come into your life at regular intervals. You

just need to keep the raincoat handy to not let the spark die.
