Ahhh, springtime in Charleston - is there

anything better? The great weather and our

beautiful surroundings make me feel like I

am living in a heaven on earth. We all seem

to want to get out and have fun! That is why

the April issue is our Recreation and Camp

issue, full of information on great events,

fun and adventurous camps for children of

all ages and interests, and businesses that

all families need in their everyday life. We also have great

tips from several “Moms in the Know,” our readers and facebook fans. Share your

knowledge with us about great businesses, events, fun activities and tips that work

for you and your family and we will include them in a future issue of Moms in the

Know. You can email us at [email protected], call us at 843-573-4846 or

join us on facebook. Facebook fans get up to date information and are eligible for

lots of fun giveaways and contests.

The first thing that may catch your eye in this issue of Moms in the Know is the

cover color. Moms in the Know changes the color of the cover with each issue, but

this issue’s color has meaning. Our beautiful colors of lavender and green show our

support for Child Abuse Awareness Month. We have partnered with the Dee Norton

Lowcountry Children’s center, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving victims

of child abuse and neglect in Charleston and Berkeley counties. Their mission is to

keep children safe from abuse, and when abuse occurs, to work with our community

to bring healing to these children and their families. Don’t miss their “Movie Night

at the Joe” April 29th - it’s going to be a fantastic event. Some other things you

don’t want to miss in this issue are our articles on fun things to do this spring break,

and our continuing series on the Top Ten things you can do for your child - this time

we focus on how to slow down and enjoy each stage of your child’s life.

Enjoy this issue of Moms in the Know, and use it to help you get out and take part in

all that Charleston and spring time have to offer. Stay in touch with us through our

website www.momsintheknow.com and our facebook fan page!

Top Ten Great Things

We are continuing our list of some of the best things you can do as a parent to help your children lead happy, fulfilling, useful lives. Previous

issues have focused on reading aloud, eating as a family, establishing family traditions, accepting your child as an individual, and teaching

your child that he or she is a PART of the universe, not the CENTER of the universe.

Sometimes parenting seems incredibly frustrating: clearly my child will NEVER be potty

trained/do his science fair project/stop arguing with me about everything. Other times

it’s just tedious -- the endless repetition of packing lunches, folding laundry, giving

baths, wiping bottoms, nagging about homework, clearing everybody’s junk off the island

in my kitchen for the third time today. luckily, these times are relieved by the exciting

moments of agonizing: should we change schools? Should we have her tonsils removed?

Exactly when and how and how much should I explain about sex?

These things readily present themselves every day, popping up relentlessly. What’s

harder to find is the joy, the small moments of happiness with my children -- the

pleasure gets lost in the pressures of hurrying to do the things that have to be done, and

the irritation of not being able to cross a task off my list. In that tizzy of getting out the

door every morning, it is so easy to lose sight of how FlEETING childhood is. I know it

doesn’t seem fleeting -- it is actually an agonizingly LONG time between picking children

up from school, homework, baseball practice, supper, clean up, bath time -- until

everything is squared away, children are in bed, the kitchen is clean and the lunches are

packed, and I have a glass of wine in my hand.

Top Ten Great Things

This too shall pass. It’s my new mantra. It helped me out when I was making endless

trips to the crummy bathroom stalls at the Parks and Rec when lily was potty training and

John Henry was playing baseball. It’s reinforced a zillion times over when I zoom through

my pictures in iphoto and see fat, sweet, smiling baby lily. When she was that person it

seemed like she’d be that person forever. Now, a blink of an eye later, she’s a tall, slim

four year old with no traces of toddler left, much less baby. Why did we even bother

getting all that baby equipment -- the babybjorn, the supersaucer? She was only a baby

for 15 minutes!

I am pursuit of being in the moment. I am not a guru of it--I am trying to figure it out.

Right now is the whole point -- not some final product or unknown end point.

Step OneR E D u C E T h E P R O B A B I l I T Y O F C R A z Y T I M E

You always read that it helps to check the calendar the night before, lay out clothes,

make a list of your priorities for the upcoming day. These things do make it less likely

that I will be rushed in the A.M. It also helps me to look even further ahead on the

calendar -- get the Valentines early, make John henry start now on the project due in

three weeks, even if it is just reserving the books he’ll need from the library. When we

do things at the last minute I am more likely to be grumpy -- not enjoying it, and then

feeling bad later for being so cross and impatient.

Step TwoS C h E D u l E I N T h E G O O D T I M E S

The things that work best for me are the things discussed in previous articles: reading

time, meal times, family traditions. lily and I read three books together in her bed every

night. She picks two, I pick one. We read under the covers, then we turn off the light

and snuggle. This does take up a bit of time, but afterwards I AlWAYS feel loving and way

closer to serene than I was when I was listening to her argue about why she did not need

to try to go potty before bed. When I snuggle her in the dark I make a conscious effort to

take deep breaths, to enjoy the scent of her freshly washed hair and the feel of her little

shape in her pajamas, to think about how luCKY I am to have her.

Tonight we are having a root beer party. When my son was dragging his feet in the details

of a project for school, I spontaneously told him we’d have a root beer party if he made

a 4 on his project. he got motivated, and with a 4 under his belt, we are now making up

just what a root beer party is. At this point it seems to be tacos, root beer (in the freezer

first for a little while), and Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. Celebrations that are easy and

not loaded (like Christmas can be) are fun and lend importance to things in a good way.

Page 13: Moms in the Know - April - June 2011

Moms in the Know® 11

Top Ten Great Things

Every once in a while, I read a book that John henry has fallen in love with. It makes

us have a content for conversations that we wouldn’t otherwise have. A loving auntie I

know says that the best time to connect with her nephew is when they play catch, just

throwing the ball back and forth, talking about anything that comes up. My friend, a

single mama who works full time, is reading Gone with the Wind with her ten year old.

They can’t do it every night, and there are many pages that lie ahead, but they are

loving the time together, unplugged.

Really listen. Children can tell when you aren’t listening. I for some reason have a very

clear memory of my mother listening with what seemed like real interest, when in the

4th grade I was telling her what song had moved up to number one and how long the

previous song had been in that spot. My son endlessly tells me stats from baseball cards

and story lines from Star Wars books. I try to listen until I can’t anymore.

Make an effort to sneak in separate time for each child in little stolen moments. When

my son had an early release day recently, he and I went to lunch together before picking

his sister up from school.

Step ThreeK E E P l O O K I N G F O R W AY S T O E N J O Y Y O u R C h I l D R E N

Here are some things I am thinking about trying:

• Working a jigsaw puzzle with my children. I am not really a puzzle person, but

maybe it will help us all with our spatial skills.

• Putting out a bowl of water and lettuce for the rabbits that we spot now and then in

our yard. It would be fun to watch together if we did attract any.

• Scheduling a block of fun into a day. In Charleston there are so many things to

do with your children: a trip to the aquarium, a walk on the beach to collect for

seashells, or a bike ride through James Island County park. Planning ahead makes a

special time a possibility that won’t happen if you leave it up to chance.

Please share your ideas for enjoying the moment! Check out Moms in the Know on

Facebook, or email your thoughts to [email protected].

Five Ways to Play Over Spring Break

Lately you’ve been rushing around, taking the kids to school, practice, helping them with homework, the list never ends! You’ve only noticed Charleston’s beautiful weather as you’re driving to and from, with the

windows down in your car. Any little bit of fresh air that you can get, you’ll take. But now, spring break is quickly approaching, a full week with your

kids and a blank schedule to fill. What better way to spend your time than sharing adventures with your kids. Whether it’s a visit to the South Carolina Aquarium, playing in Charleston’s waters, or reconnecting with nature, here

are five ways to explore the Lowcountry’s beauty.

E x P l O R E Y O u R C O u N T Y P A R K

Grab the picnic basket, some cold drinks, your sneakers and your sense of adventure

and spend the day at your nearby county park. Pick a trail and just start walking, you’ll

quickly come across wildlife, whether it’s a tiny ladybug, a lizard, or even a heron;

always keep your eyes peeled for some hidden surprises. Soak up the springtime fresh

air while taking in beautiful lowcountry marshes and old oak trees. Find a seat by

one of those beautiful trees or a bench and enjoy your picnic lunch. Then head to the

playground to burn off some energy with your little one, swing, laugh, play and just have

fun!

P l A Y O N T h E W A T E R

It’s time to hit the water! Teach your children about nature by playing in it. Whether

it’s going out for a day-sail, kayaking in the river, or paddle boarding in a saltmarsh;

being on the water is one of the most fun ways to play in the lowcountry. Check out the

pelicans diving for a fresh catch, or the dolphins playing just ahead of you, wherever you

go, you’re sure to experience nature first hand.

hop on a bike and take advantage of your neighborhood. Check out the beautiful

historic mansions downtown, expansive hampton Park, or ride to a nearby body of

water. Biking is one of the best ways to get around town and just have some fun. Take

advantage of your own pedal power and race your kids! Or stop at an overlook and count

how many different kinds of animals you spot. Be sure to bring plenty of water, you’ll

need it because you’ll never want to stop riding and exploring!

B E A C h W A l K

A week in the lowcountry isn’t complete without at least one visit to one of our

beautiful beaches. Whether it’s Sullivan’s Island, or Beachwalker County Park, you’ll

always see something new by just taking a stroll on the sand. umbrella, chair and child

in tow, you hit the shore. Thousands of shells, colors and shapes run on as far as the

eye can see. Be sure to explore the tidal pools, sometimes you’ll find horseshoe crabs,

urchins, and if you’re lucky, a sea anemone. Out in the surf, porpoises love to play so

be sure to bring your camera to get that picture perfect moment on this picture perfect

day!

A q u A R I u M

Where better to go after your family fun nature activity then the South Carolina

Aquarium. Bring shells you and your little one collected, and photos you took, and find

out all about what you saw and experienced. Explore the mountains of South Carolina

all the way down to the deep ocean. In between be sure to check out the new Toddler

Cove play area and the famous albino American alligator, one of only 50 in the entire

world. Get hands-on with interactive learning activities, enjoy daily dive shows and up

close animal encounters! Your children will walk away with a greater appreciation for

the world around them and how they can do their part in caring for it!

Moms know that taking care of a family is one big balancing

act. We have to prioritize, organize, systemize everything

from breakfast to bedtime. Whether you stay at home,

work out of your home or outside your home, family life

is a hectic proposition. Each issue of Moms in the Know

highlights a mom who has a good grip on the situation. We

are always looking for ways to do things better or easier

and these moms have found a way to balance their lives,

families, and careers.

beach right down the street and the mountains only a few hours away.
