When I started Moms in the Know six

years ago I had a six year old and a

three year old and we had been back

in Charleston a few years. Most of

my Charleston friends had children

after me and would call for advice

on everything from breastfeeding

to time outs. I was sometimes

referred to as “Auntie Mommy,”

and I loved all of those conversations. I still do, talking about what

worked with my children, what worked for my sister’s children, mentioning an

article that I read. Now that my children are a little older I am fortunate enough

to have new friends who have children older than mine, and I feel lucky to be

able to benefit from their advice and experiences. We all need advice from

experienced parents. We need all kinds of knowledge to help us make decisions

every day.

That is why this issue of Moms in the Know has a focus on knowledge. We want

to share information on family friendly businesses, events and tips to help you in

the world of parenting. Check out our article on how to pick the best learning

environment for your child. In this issue we also continue our series on the top

ten great things you can do for your child; this time we are focusing on accepting

your child as an individual.

Our next issue’s theme is health and we want you to share your knowledge with

us. Please send us your tips, ideas and concerns. We have so many ways you can

share information with us: email us at [email protected] , call us at 843-

573-4846 or write on our facebook fan page. Let’s all be Auntie Mommy---getting

help when we need it and helping out when we can.

top ten Great things

#4 Love Your Child for Who He or She IsWe are continuing our list of some of the best things you can do as a

parent to help your children lead happy, fulfilling, useful lives. Our first three items in previous issues were reading aloud, eating as a family, and

establishing family traditions . In this issue we focus on accepting your child as an individual .

“It just depends on the baby you get.” This was a chance remark from a conversation

with a new mother, years before I had children of my own, but for some reason it stuck

with me. I can’t remember now what we were talking about, but she was describing

something that had changed since she’d had her baby-- maybe it was shopping or taking

walks. When I asked her why she couldn’t just take the baby with her in a stroller, she

paused. “Well,” she said, “it just depends on the baby you get.” It was vivid to me

-- kind of like something my father used to say, “play the hand you’re dealt.” Although

environment does have much to do with the child you are raising, experts agree that

each baby is born with a predetermined temperament and set of talents. your child

comes to you -- is born with--- a package: a disposition and other characteristics that

make her unique. your personalities may be compatible, or you may clash. your

husband may hope to coach your son’s soccer team, but your son would rather play

chess. It just depends on the baby you get. your job is to slowly open the package, and

then exclaim, and mean it, “It’s just what I wanted!”

Play the hand you are dealt.

In The Baby Whisperer, tracy hogg’s main idea is that babies have their

own styles, and those styles may or may not be compatible with their

parents’ natural style. you may have a baby who thrives on routine, who

needs it to stay happy and well balanced, but you yourself may chafe

at routines and schedules, preferring to be more spontaneous. hogg

recommends paying attention and getting to know your baby early on,

and doing what works best for him and his style. She divides babies into

five categories, with tips for recognizing your own child’s personality, and

the best way to keep that personality style happy and comfortable. you

don’t have to change who you are, but it’s best if you try to understand

early on what kind of person you are working with, and what works best

for her.

Even pre-schoolers are people.

For help past babyhood, What to Expect: The Toddler Years (Eisenberg,

Murkoff, and hathaway) has helpful advice. these trusted advisors give

down to earth, comforting advice. First, get rid of your expectations

of what your children should be like, and try not to criticize them for

being who they are. Try not to blame anyone else either, even if you

recognize your mother’s contrary streak in your daughter. resist labeling

a child, because the labels attached by families are hard to shed later

on. the authors advise working to accept your child’s inborn preferences

and talents, and suggest taking them into account when making plans,

buying gifts, disciplining, and choosing child care. two children in the

same family can have very different needs and will respond differently.

It’s also important not to accept an inborn trait as a final verdict. I am

pretty sure that my son has inherited my terrible sense of direction and

my poor math skills, but I am working on helping him discover ways to

cope with these weaknesses-- and I’m not letting him know I think they

are weaknesses. the authors also recommend the Difficult Child by

Stanley turecki MD, for parents struggling with children that seem hard

to manage.

Page 11: Moms in the Know - October 2010 issue

top ten Great things

Get to know your child.

As children get older, it is important to try to stay tuned into their

individual needs. We tend to think we know our children very well,

better than anybody else, but it’s an ongoing process. As they get older

they need us less, and we spend less time with them as they start school.

Make an effort to really listen to your child when he talks, to spend one

on one time together when you can, doing things that your child finds

absorbing.

Treat childhood as a buffet, and offer your child a variety of activities.

this doesn’t mean you should sign her up for a different activity every day

or start piano lessons at age three, but it is good to pay attention to your

child’s interests and allow her to explore them. If you have a preschooler

who loves music, check out different CDs from the library and play them

in the car. If your older child is fascinated by the Civil War, show him how

to search for books on this topic in the library. When new passions come

along, find ways to explore them, too. you can introduce your children

to adults who share their interests, take them to community events, and

make an effort to plan activities with these enthusiasms in mind when

planning family vacations. you’ll find that you are learning as you help

your child grow.

Get perspective.

My son has a friend who wears a mohawk-- he sported it in kindergarten.

Another friend’s daughter wore a Chiquita banana sticker on her forehead

for several weeks running. It’s easy to stress over things like this-- you

want your pretty little girl to wear darling little smocked dresses, but she

wants to wear her big brother’s camouflage. one of the best tips I found

in my research was to ask yourself this question: will this matter in five

years? Clothes? no. hair, stickers? no. not taking school seriously? Maybe

we should pay attention. Allow your child to try things on-- interests,

styles-- while continuing to help him become the best version of himself

that he can. As parents we can’t change the genetic package, but we can

influence who our children will ultimately be, and the attitudes they will

have. We can teach responsibility and tolerance, and we can model a

love of learning and a good attitude.

Walking tall is so important. Even at an early

age, a child can learn to pull their shoulders

back and hold their head up. The Marching Band exercise

accomplishes this well. Make your own instruments using

the paper towel empty roll as a horn and empty milk gallon

jugs beat together as a creative instrument. Have the child

follow you through the house or outside walking with your

shoulders back, head up and knees lifted high. It works

wonders!

Learning Environment

By Jocelyn Ruth

F I n D I n G t h E B E S t

F o r y o u r C h I L D

Learning Environment

Deciding on the type of learning environment you’d like for your child

can be a confusing process for many parents. Here are things to

consider during this decision making process.

v I S I t y o u r t o P S C h o o L S

After deciding between full and half day programs, secular and non secular schools

and a price to fit your budget, narrow your search to 3 schools that meet those

needs. then, make an appointment to visit each school, with time scheduled for

you to tour the classrooms and chat with the director.

I do not recommend just “dropping by” unannounced to your chosen schools, as

you will usually not be given enough time and attention to get all of your questions

answered. A helpful school will schedule parent visits during a part of the school

day that will showcase as many classroom activities as possible. For example, you

do not want a tour during lunchtime, end of day pick-up or during the first 2 weeks

of the school year, when all of the students are adjusting to a new environment

and interruptions would not be helpful.

C u r r I C u L u M A n D E n v I r o n M E n t

keep in mind that the lower the stress-level within the classroom, the greater

the chance that your child will enjoy their learning experience. the school you

choose should also have a developmentally appropriate curriculum that integrates

music, art and play into the classroom schedule. A good school environment will

Page 22: Moms in the Know - October 2010 issue

Moms in the Know®20

Learning Environment

encourage your child to have fun, follow directions, use good manners and

share cheerfully An activity as simple as walking quietly in a single file line in

the hallway teaches the children to follow directions and to be thoughtful and

helpful to others within their group.

Classroom activities should flow in an organized manner, but should not

be rigid. teachers should be engaging the group on the child’s level,

while seated with them or moving around them. Table time should be

limited to crafts, puzzles and snacks. It’s nice to see a comfy corner in

the classroom for reading and story time, with many age appropriate

books available for the children’s use.

Integrating music and song into the daily educational experience will assist in

your child’s comfort and ease of learning. Music played within the classroom

setting to encourage movement and singing seasonal and silly songs are great

social learning tools.

A cheerful, positive, learning- through-play environment should include both free

play and guided play. Play Centers should include a home living

area, books, manipulative items like blocks, legos and counting

bears, an area for pouring, dumping and molding, such as sand

and water tables, areas that encourage imaginative play, such as

vehicles and roadways, and one on one time with the teacher.

Crafts may be guided by a general plan, but individual creativity

should be encouraged. Look for the use of many different mediums in the crafts

sent home, such as feathers, pasta, yarn and brightly colored paper shapes used

to create a picture.

Children want to know what to expect and are comforted by routine. Look

for a classroom that sets a daily schedule, such as daily greeting, play time,

clean-up activities and songs, circle time, snack, and recess. your child should

be encouraged to join in group play as a toddler, and will naturally progress to

partnered play by the age of three. Look for a school that encourages the child

to play with all of their classmates. rotating individuals within center groups

is a good way to achieve this. Playing organized games is a great way for your

child to learn to follow directions, cooperate and wait their turn. number and

color recognition games that involve matching, like Bingo, are examples of this

method.

Page 23: Moms in the Know - October 2010 issue

Moms in the Know® 21

Learning Environment

t E A C h E r r A t I o A n D q u A L I F I C A t I o n S

teachers should be trained in CPr and First Aid, and be experienced educators

who clearly enjoy their jobs and encourage the child’s social and academic

growth in a positive, cheerful way. Background checks, preferably national

rather than state, should be passed by all school employees. Be sure that the

school also follows a child protection/safety policy and that all employees are

trained in it.

Ask about teacher: student ratios as well as how many teachers will be present

daily per classroom. A low teacher: student ratio is good, such as 1:4 for

toddlers or 1:5 for two year olds. (the 2009 South Carolina DSS regulations are

1:6 for toddlers and 1:7 for two year olds.)

Look for teaching teams made up of at least two teachers per classroom. Also,

ask what the average length of employment is for the teaching staff. A happy

workplace will be demonstrated by an average length of service longer than 2

years and will translate into a positive school environment for your child.

C o M P A r E y o u r n o t E S

once your visits are complete, compare notes on all schools visited. you are

now ready to enroll your child in a learning environment that meets the majority

of your criterion for a happy, safe school experience. keep in mind that most

schools register in January and February for the school year which begins in

September, but many also have active, ongoing waiting lists that your child can

be placed on if classes for fall are full.
