Lower payments from one large payer (government) are driving major reforms and creating budgetary challenges. Yet growth remains an imperative. What kind of growth? How can/should we grow? Breakfast Breakout Sessions

General Sessions

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Registration Desk Open 7:30 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. Breakfast Breakout Sessions (Breakfast served from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.)

Session 1

The Hidden Costs of Malnutrition for Health Providers Molly Hegarty, Founder and CEO, RDnote

On average, hospitalization costs for malnourished patients are two times higher, and lengths of stay are up to 6 days longer than their well-nourished counterparts. Malnourished patients require more care and have poorer outcomes. Research shows that up to 50% of acute-care patients meet the diagnostic criteria for malnutrition, yet only 5% to 7% of patients are diagnosed. As a result, up to 19 million malnutrition cases go undiagnosed and untreated annually. Learn how Lafayette General Health (LGH) leveraged technology to close this gap, improve clinical care standards, and drive patient outcomes and quality improvements. The presenter will share LGH’s story and demonstrate how other providers can learn from this case study.

Session 2

Hospital Worker Safety: We Have a Problem and We Can Solve It Stephen Muething, MD, Chief Quality Officer and Co-Director, James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

According to federal data, healthcare has an extremely high rate of harm for our employees, and our workers are more likely to be injured than industries that are generally considered more dangerous. As every hospital balances many competing priorities, there are clear and compelling reasons why every hospital leader should personally commit to improving the situation. Examples of progress are developing, and actionable steps are becoming clearer. Adoption of early best practices and continuous learning across hospitals are leading to acceleration in improvement. This session is designed to give leaders concrete steps to achieve improved safety.

Session 3

The Landscape of Rural Health Brock Slabach, MPH, FACHE, Sr. Vice President for Member Services, National Rural Health Association

Rural providers of care have seen major changes during the last decade in the landscape of healthcare delivery in America. These changes present challenges and opportunities. This session will focus on the potential impact of federal policy on rural providers of care and their communities with emphasis on value-based purchasing and population health.

9:00 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. Welcome/Announcements 9:15 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. General Session: The CANDOR (Communication and Optimal

Resolution) Approach David B. Mayer, MD, Executive Director, MedStar Health Institute for

Quality and Safety

Unexpected patient harm is far too common, and the responses typically fail to meet the patient’s and family’s needs or promotes learning that could prevent future harm. Communication and Resolution Programs (CPRs), like CANDOR, are a principled approach for responding to patient harm. They are an integral component of an effective, empathetic patient safety and quality improvement program, implemented for the benefit of the patients, care professionals and our healthcare communities. Dr. Mayer will share insights of success stories of their demonstrated legacy of improving patient safety and reducing medical liability and a roadmap of their journey.

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Breakfast Buffet

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. General Session: What You Need to Know About the Current and Future State of the U.S. Healthcare System Anthony Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, Speaker, Healthcare Executive, Practicing Physician

Whether you have been working in healthcare for decades or merely participate as a patient, how much do you really know about the forces that have molded and are currently shaping the overall U.S. healthcare system? This session looks at the data at a macro level to view the U.S. healthcare system in both a historical and present-day context to help participants understand the stakeholders and the myriad of incentives and various directions by which those forces impact those who provide care and those who receive care. Using comparisons to other industries, as well as examining the role of technology and the role of the media and public opinion in shaping the debate over healthcare policy, this session will not only help participants better position themselves in the healthcare debate, but also help healthcare leaders and providers better understand the “why” in the current national discussion.
