On November 5, 2015, CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Family Literacy Program cele-brated their long awaited adult course completion ceremony for the participants of the Garapan Community Development Center. Due to the damages sustained from Ty-phoon Soudelor, the GCDC was unable to hold the completion ceremony as sched-uled. Participant Sister Stella Mangona volunteered her Dan Dan home to host the ceremony. The following 16 parents participated in the Motheread/Fatheread Adult Course: Rita M. Castro, Ma. Isabel T. Magpoc, Agnes E. Camacho, Ellen A. Vidanes, Candy Panaga, Meyther Cervantes, Arnold Puno, Noel G. Trinidad, Rosedelyn Tu-pas, Ma. Kristina Matsunaga, Maricel Aldan, Sister Stella Mangona, Candido S. Ada, Somjai S. Ada, Jeanette Awas, and Jerryson Mani. Parent Trainer Angelina Yobech facilitated this Adult Course and was on hand to congratulate the participants. Pro-gram Coordinator Viola Deleon Guerrero, Assistant Coordinator Beth Demapan, and DYS Program Manager Vivian Sablan were also present to celebrate and congratu-late the participants. A great big thank you to our Division of Youth Services partners

CNMI Motheread/Fatheread celebrated their Adult Course completion ceremony on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 for the San Vicente village outreach at Stanford Apartments. The Adult Course is facilitated by Parent Trainer Beth Demapan. Classes began on October 6, 2015. Participants of the class are as follows: Rita Demapan, Gloria Hernandez, Nympha Sharts, Marilou Donarye, Mario Monte, Susan dela Cruz, Ma. Mylene Manglona. On November 9, 2015, Moth-eread/ Fa-theread Pro-gram Facilita-tor Bryan Man-abat was invit-ed to perform a Read Aloud at the Chalan Kanoa Head Start . He read to more than 50 chil-dren the book Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell from the Moth-eread collec-tion.

On November 10, 2015, the Northern Marianas Humani-ties Council and Lay Minis-try’s Program of the Diocese sponsored a presentation by Fr. Francis X. Hezel, SJ at the Pacific Islands Club. Titled: “The Founding of the Church in the Marianas: A Clash of Cultures.” Fr. Hezel’s presentation provided an overview of the establishment of a Catholic mission in the Marianas in 1668. Team CNMI Motheread/Fatheread attended this event which drew over a hundred participants from the community.

On November 19, 2015, CNMI Motheread/Fatheread’s Assis-tant Coordinator Beth Demapan attended the cooking demon-stration for Saipan’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge Champion Claire Park at the Hyatt. CNMI Motheread/Fatheread on behalf of Let’s Move Marianas Alliance congratulated Claire Park for her winning recipe and her promo-tional efforts of healthy cooking in the CNMI. Claire Park hails from Saipan International School. As the CNMI winner in the national competition, Park’s was this year’s state representa-tive to the Kid’s “State Dinner, “ which was hosted by President Barack Obama and first Lady Michelle Obama.

Angelina N. Yobech was born and raised in the Golden State of California. She is married to Rengesuul Yobech, and they have 3 beautiful children— Jireh, Micah, and Jether. Mrs. Yobech first visited the CNMI in 1988 and again in 1989, and she has made Saipan her home for 20 years. Angelina holds an Asso-ciate’s degree in Liberal Arts and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Northern Marianas College. Moreover, she is the recipient of the competitive PREL Library (LEAP) scholarship, wherein she has earned a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science.

In 2011, while teaching at Hopwood Junior High School, she was chosen as the Gover-nor’s Humanities Awardee for Outstanding Humanities Teacher. She was honored for her commitment for the Council’s signature Motheread program. She has spent over 232 weeks and more than 464 hours working with

many parents to teach them “how to build dynamic learning environments in their own homes.” She has been an active Parent Trainer since being certified more than 17 years ago. “ I love volunteering with CNMI Motheread/Fatheread program because it connects people. It helps build relationships in the home

and in the community.” For more than 17 years, she has actively volunteered her time to the Motheread/Fatheread Program as a certified Parent Trainer and a certified Children’s Storysharing Instructor. Since her certification in Octo-ber 1998, Mrs. Yobech is the only active trainer from the first cadre of 18 volunteers. She has facilitated countless Motheread/Fatheread Adult Courses and Story Sharing classes in the CNMI — Department of Corrections, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, Garapan Community Development Center, Northern Marianas College, Marianas High School Li-brary, Tanapag Head Start, Oleai Head Start, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, San Antonio Head Start, Kagman Head Start, and Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-purpose Center, et.al.

Besides the regular Motheread parent trainings that she has led, she is also a Teacheread trainer/presenter. The Teacheread Program is a locally developed Motheread program designed to provide aspiring teachers from the North-ern Marianas College and center-based teachers and caregivers from the DCCA’s Child Care Program with the skills necessary to build children’s reading and critical thinking skills. Mrs. Angelina N. Yobech currently serves as the librari-an for Marianas High School. In November, she successfully completed another Motheread/Fatheread Adult Course in partnership with the Division of Youth Services. Her students issued glowing remarks as they recounted their learn-ing experiences with her at the helm. On behalf of the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Program, we thank you and we appreciate all the hard work and commitment you do for the CNMI. We are truly blessed to have you be a part of our Motheread/Fatheread family.

Taotao tano’-ta: People of the Island encompass a collection of local leaders, individuals, and groups from the CNMI

whose vision, wisdom and skill have made an enormous impact in the lives of the people of the Commonwealth in many

ways. These are progressive local leaders that showcased exemplary leadership roles in public service, community

building, and undertakings that benefited the CNMI as a whole. Taotao tano’-ta are Individuals & Artisans that promot-

ed and represented the CNMI local culture and traditions through the arts of healing, music, crafts, dances, culinary,

and language enhancement in the Commonwealth and beyond the Pacific. These are also groups and innovative indi-

viduals that contributed generously in the development of agriculture, fishing, education, health, law, religion, public

safety, and good governance in the Northern Marianas Island. Their untiring efforts to lift the Commonwealth to pros-

perity leaves no question of their true leanings; that is for the betterment of the CNMI.

Motheread®, Inc. is a nationally acclaimed private, non-profit organization that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues. Motheread® offers classes for both the adults and children. In adult classes, participants learn to be story readers, writers, and tellers in a group structure that supports their own sense of worth and ability. These classes are appropriate for all adults, regardless of reading ability or prior educational experience. By teaching the “why” of reading rather than just emphasizing the “how”, classes encourage parents to be reading role models for their children. For children, Story Exploring provides a structured environment for learning reading, critical-thinking, and problem solving skills.
