    Celebrate in style

When you purchase your new vehicle, look outfor the best offers from different carcompanies and dealers.

THE festive season is back and this year, carcompanies are again offering packages thatcan make your purchases worthwhile.

The offers you find at car dealershipsdiffer from one showroom to another, evenfor the same brands. This is because eachdealer is often willing to offer somethingextra to attract customers.

There are also companies that offer hugediscounts to clear their stock. However, if thecar is more than a year old, be extra carefulto check the tyres and all rubber parts.

You do not know where they have storedthe car for the past one year or more andrubber and plastic parts can get damaged ifthey are exposed to sunlight for a long time.

If you are buying reconditioned vehicles, make sure that the AP form matches thevehicle you paid for.

Do not accept the car until you have seenthe AP form. Some buyers are not aware ofthe form and years later, they find it difficultto sell the vehicle.

The best option is to buy reconditionedvehicles from popular outlets because theyare more established and they get the firstpick of the lot.

There will also be an influx of peoplebuying new vehicles and car companieswould have taken steps to prepare for this.

Here are some tips that will help makeyour next purchase hassle-free:1. Check out all offers from car companies

and dealers near you.2. Some companies offer free maintenance

packages. However, make sure that the

offer is written in black and white.3. All payment should be given a receipt

and receipts should be from the company(dealer) and not from an individual.

    4. If you are promised a specific deliverytime for the vehicle, ask forcompensation if the dealer fails to doso, such as a discount. Ensure that anyagreements made are written on paper.

    5. Check the vehicle throughly before youput down your signature on the deliveryform.

    6. Do not allow the bank to disburse themoney if you have not received the caryet.

The festive season can be made even moreenjoyable if you land a great purchase thatgives you good value for money. So keepyour eyes peeled for the great offers outthere.

CAR companies have many waysto attract buyers to buy theirproducts. In making their productssound better than theircompetitors, they use what theindustry calls unique selling points(USP).

Car companies believe that theUSP is what makes their productsstand out in the market and whilesome features are useful and bringreal value to a vehicle, others aresometimes for-show items thatserve no real practical purpose butonly offer aesthetic value.

Some of the items below arewhat one could consider eye candyrather than practical features.

    Sunroof/moonroof

Believe it or not, most ownerswith vehicles that come with thishardly use it even after six

months. In fact, after a few years, the weatherstripping needsreplacement, which adds to themaintenance cost.

    Panoramic roof

This item used to be a majorwow factor but the market hasgradually matured to realise that itis an expensive gimmick.

Like the sunroof, owners hardlyrealise it is there even after sixmonths. What they do realiseis that they will have to spendextra money on tinting as theglass roof allows more heat to

    enter the cabin.Fortunately, unlike the

sunroof, the weatherstrippinglasts longer as it does not openand close.

    Huge wheels withlow-profle tyres

    While some people pay

thousands for this option, the truth is that most carcompanies will spec theircar with lower-sized wheels.

An upgrade in wheels willnot include a suspensiontuning, which means thatthe expensive big wheelswill make the ride harshand uncomfortable.

Satellite navigationThis used to be an essential item

a while back, but with theintroduction of navigationproviders such as Waze and GoogleMap, satellite navigation has takenthe back seat. What you need is themirror-link feature that allows yourphone screen to appear on the carstouchscreen panel.

    Chromed exhaust tip

You will likely get a better deal ifyou do this at an exhaust shop. What car companies normally sellis a tailpipe garnishing, which is achrome metal tube slipped on tothe original tailpipe.

After a few years, the chromewill turn black and the screws willstart rattling. If your exhausttailpipe is hidden behind the rearbumper and points downward, having the garnishing may lookquite unsightly; sporty tailpipesshould point to the rear, notdownwards.

While somefeatures are usefuland bring real valueto a vehicle, othersare sometimesfor-show itemsthat serve no realpractical purposebut only oeraesthetic value.

Certain features add visual appeal and glamour to your ride but do not add practical value and often requireexpensive maintenance.
