Volume 1, Issue 2

Early one morning on my way to work, I stopped at the convenience store to g

rab

some coffee. After I poured my cup, I was trying to put the lid on, not doing a

good job. I was paying attention to my cup and didn't notice the l

ovely lady that

was waiting behind me to get her coffee. After I ran into

her and my coffee spilled

all over her purse and coat, I tried to help her wipe the coffee

off best I could with a couple of napkins. She said it was no big

deal; that accidents happen. I

offered to pay to have it dry

cleaned and insisted we exchanged numbers so she could call

me and let me know how much I owed her. We ended up

becoming friends. We dated for only 5 months before I popped

the question. Oh, and she did send me the dry cleaning bill, $10

dollars. Looking back that was the best $10 I’d even spent.

A s PML continues to

grow and spread its

industry wings, we are

no longer known for

just mud logging. In the fall of

2010, PML hired its first

Geosteering Geologist and began

its first geosteering job. Since then,

we are now operating in the

Bakken and are pursuing work

throughout the United States.

According to John Parsons, PML

President & CEO, Geosteering is a

great opportunity for PML in

growth areas of the industry. It

allows us to improve our value to

our clients, which in turn means

more jobs and opportunities for

our employees.” As PML

continues to gain geosteering

experience and credibility, we gain

more ground on separating

ourselves from our competitors.

Since the onset of horizontal wells,

Geosteering has evolved into a

necessary part of our industry.

Over the last few years,

Geosteering has gained respect in

the industry and has become an

important team player. As oil &

gas companies strive to stay in

smaller zones while drilling, the

use of Geosteering Geologists has

become vital. According to PML

Geological Consultant, Gregg

Donley, “Geosteering can be

performed onsite, as well as

remotely. It’s the same; their job is

to guide the drilling while staying

in the pay zone.” Geosteerers also

help to avoid danger areas, which

could potentially cost the client

thousands of dollars if not

avoided.

Venturing into Geosteering is not

only profitable for PML, it also

improves the career path and

options for our current employees.

Prior to geosteering, our geologist

had only one career path available

to them, now they can venture into

something new and exciting while

gaining a valuable skill. It allows

the geologist to use their expertise

in geological analysis.

A quality Geosteerer is an

important member of the Geology

Team. They are responsible for the

interpretation of geological and

geophysical data and accountable

for the accurate placement of well

path associated with the drilling of

horizontal development wells. He/

she works closely with the drilling

engineer and drilling supervision to

insure the accurate placement of

wellbores. They collect, review,

and interpret the geological data to

guide the directional drilling

operator to stay in the “sweet

spot.” The sweet spot equals

money to the client, which equals

more jobs for PML if we continue

to provide top quality work. The

future for PML and geosteering

has never looked brighter. With

this new venture, PML is one step

closer in becoming an industry

leader and top-quality competitor.

PML is definitely a company on

the move…

The two organs communicate via the muscular walls around the heart, which are connected to the brain in the circulatory system. As the brain releases hormones telling the body what to do, receptor cells in your blood vessels pick up these messages. In addition, there are nerve endings that travel from the brain to the muscular walls of the heart. These nerves send messages to the muscle tissue to either relax or contract. Since these two organs communicate, mental health can have a dramatic effect on heart health and vice versa.

Stress The mind’s response to a perceived or actual threatening situation is known as stress. The body responds to the stress by increasing:

Blood pressure

Respiratory rate

Heart rate

Oxygen consumption

Blood flow to skeletal muscles

Perspiration

Muscle tone

When you experience these responses on a regular basis as a result of stress, you are putting your body at an increased risk of heart disease. Stress-reducing Meditation To combat the potentially life-threatening damage stress could have on your heart, there are several meditation techniques you can try. These techniques aim to achieve a relaxation response to reduce stress, improve the immune system and prepare the body for traumatic situations in the future. Here are three ways to meditate:

Go into a quiet environment and sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Then, focus your attention on one thing such as a word, phrase or sound. Repeat that one thing over and over again. If you find that your mind wanders, refocus back. Do this exercise for 20 minutes to escape the stressors of your life.

Progressive relaxation is another useful exercise. Lie down or sit in a quiet area. Focus your attention on the muscle groups in your feet and slowly move through each group

until you reach your head. As you go through each muscle group, try to imagine that you are actually breathing through those organs. As you “exhale”, release the tension from the group. As an alternative, you may tighten the muscles in each group for several seconds, and then physically release the tension.

A third meditation exercise is to imagine that you are clearing your body of the toxins that you want to get rid of. For instance, visualize that you are ridding your arteries of plaque. Concentrate on releasing that energy, which will ultimately reduce the tension in your mind.

Even though the brain and the heart

are located far from one another in the

body, they are intrinsically connected

and have a significant impact on how

each other functions.

The Heart and Mind Connection The link between two vital organs

Heart Patients Need to Relax…

Research indicates that those who already have heart problems are at an increased

risk of a second heart attack if they are extremely stressed, depressed or hostile.

To avoid unnecessary strain on your heart, find ways to reduce the stress in your

Effective January 1, 2011, The following Vacation Policy is an attempt to revise and align both field and office staff

vacation leave.

> Vacation leave is use it or lose it, meaning all vacation accrued throughout the year must be used by December 31st of that year or the

employee loses it.

> Vacation accrued during 2010 will be carried over to 2011 but the total carried over cannot exceed the annual accrued maximum of 10 days or

15 days for any employee of PML. (10 or 15 depends on the years of service, see below.) if the carryover amount is not used during 2011, it

will be fortified as of January 1, 2012.

> Moving forward, on Jan 1st all employees begin the new calendar year with a 0 vacation balance.

> Loggers hired in 2011 and moving forward will not be offered vacation leave.

> All current loggers will continue to receive vacation leave under the new policy as

defined below as long as they are employed continuously.

> All employees eligible for vacation will accrue vacation at the same rate:

> 0-5 years of service = 10 days annually.

> 5+ years of service = 15 days annually.

> Vacation days are defined as 8 hours for office staff and 12 hours for field staff.

> When using vacation leave, all employees must fill out a Vacation Request Form,

forward to their supervisor and the signed form must be sent in to HR/Payroll two

weeks prior to the leave. To get a Vacation Request Form, see your supervisor or visit

the PML website and download it.

> If an employee, with an accrued vacation balance, resigns giving a written two (2) week notice and leaves on good terms, they will be paid for

their unused accrued vacation hours. The total amount paid is not to exceed one (1) year worth of accrued vacation. Failure to give two (2)

week notice, failure to fulfill an approved two (2) week notice, or termination of employment will result in the forfeiture of payment for

accumulated vacation hours.

Lose the SALT But Not the Flavor

Cutting back on the salt in your diet is one way to help control blood pressure. Many people consume much more salt than their bodies need—on average, at least 12 times as much, according to the American Heart Association. If you’re used to salty flavors, know that you can shake the salt habit without feeling deprived. Here’s how…

Limit processed foods, which are usually high in sodium. Eat more

fruits, vegetables and other low-sodium foods instead.

Drain and rinse canned vegetables before preparing them. They’ll

keep a little of their salty flavor, but you’ll rinse away about a third of the sodium, according to the USDA.

Try packaged foods labeled as low sodium.

Season vegetables, poultry and fish with lemon juice rather than

salt.

Try cooking with salt-free seasonings, such as vinegar and herbs.

Prepare plain brown or white rice instead of flavored mixes. Flavor

with herbs or olive oil.

Snack on “lightly salted” popcorn and pretzels and “no-salt-

added” peanuts.

Remember: Try adding these tips gradually to get used to a lower

-salt life. You’ll eat healthier without sacrificing taste.

I’d just came off a 24 hour logging shift and my sister had invited a girlfriend over that she hadn’t seen in about 10 years. My sister had just went through a bad divorce and was staying with me until she could get back on her feet. I was worn smooth that night and in no mood for company. I know I was grouchy as hell to the both of them but my sister’s friend Becky just kept on talking away. We all watched TV until I passed out in the recliner. The next morning I woke up to the smell of sausage. Becky and my sister was making breakfast. After we ate I got dressed and headed to the rig. Becky called me that night. We talked and talked. She ended up coming over for the next month or so. My sister got her own place and moved out. I asked Becky to move in and she’s been with me ever since. That was 5 years ago.

I t is easy to talk about wearing

your hard hat or putting on your

safety glasses, and with the end of

the safety meeting, say “Safety

First,” and go back to work.

Companies have been doing that

for years, talking a good game, but

investing very little in creating an

“Safety First” environment. Time

goes by, and workloads and costs

increase, and more emphasis is put

on productivity and profit.

Then on a long shift, late at night, a

decision is made to either to go

ahead and finish the job right,

follow procedures, or take a short

cut. Because the emphasis lately

has been on productivity and

results, rather than taking the time

to do it right, or to work steady and

carefully, a short cut is taken, or

the job is hurried.

For the last fifty times there has

been no accidents, no mistakes, no

injuries. But this time there is.

Someone gets hurt.

I have worked in

the oil and gas

business for

different com-

panies and have

heard “Safety

First,” for over

twenty years. I

once worked for a

company where

the culture was so

bad, that we had

“safety variances,” that we attached

to procedures systematically,

without any thought, so we didn‟t

have to follow procedures. Our

valves leaked, and it was just too

much trouble and cost too much

production to do it right. We got

away with that for years. But as in

all operations, it finally caught up

with us. It took someone getting

hurt for us to step back and see that

our whole culture; our “safety

environment” was wrong.

It took an accident to change

things. And after that, it took

management to raise awareness

that the “environment” had indeed

changed.

That is why I am here. That is

where we are at PML Exploration.

In 2010, we had one lost time

accident. Our target, our goal for

2011 is zero accidents. Our mission

from now on, is that we do no

harm to the environment, no

accidents, no injuries, and every

body returns home safely.

As Safety Manager, I am going to

be working here in the Oklahoma

City office, catching up, getting my

feet on the ground, and then hope-

fully soon, I will be getting out to

the field to meet everyone.

The topic of conversation will be to

assure you that PML Exploration‟s

Management is taking safety

seriously. We cannot afford

accidents, or injuries. We cannot

afford a compromised safety

record.

And then

I want to

hear from

you. How

can we

improve

our

“Safety

Environment?”

We are going to have a zero

tolerance environment. We are

professionals. Think of your

mandatory training, your

procedures, your work habits and

your “Safe Work Ethic” as your

license to operate. Without those

credentials, you cannot work, you

will have no license to operate in

our safety environment.

Our clients want the best

equipment, tools, people and

product, and we are determined to

deliver it. Our biggest asset is our

employees. Your integrity and

credibility is what we sell to get the

next job. A safe work ethic is an

integral part of your integrity. PML

Exploration‟s success in the

coming year is dependent on your

awareness of that.

I will be working with you to

constantly improve our safety

environment. It will be a

conversation that will never end. I

look forward to hearing your ideas

and suggestions for improvement.

S lips and falls going down the

stairs is a leading cause of lost

time accidents in the oil industry.

Angela Harris is demonstrating a

better way to go down the stairs.

First, if you are on the rig, and the

hand rail is cold, get some gloves.

Many falls have happened because

the hand rail was not used, and the

reason was, “because it was cold.”

Leather gloves with cotton inserts

work well.

Second, instead of grabbing the

handrail with your hand on top of

the rail, turn a quarter turn towards

the handrail, and grab the handrail

from underneath. This does two

things. It gives your grip on the

handrail a lower center of gravity,

and thus gives you better stability

going down the stairs. It also gives

you more strength and reaction

time if you do slip.

Try it and you will immediately

feel the difference.

The Safety Minute

A Smart Move

„Our mission from now

on, is that we do no harm

to the environment, no

accidents, no injuries, and

everyone returns home

safely.‟

What is a Safety

Culture Anyway?

A safety culture has been said to

be the “behavior of an

organization when no one is

looking.”

A safety culture takes time to

develop. It will be successful

when the individuals in the

organization perceive

themselves as part of a team that

shares a strong commitment to a

safe work ethic. It is a social

and professional agreement of

what is “normal,” for an

organization. It is a group of

professionals that tolerate no

deviance from that work ethic,

and employ strong incentives

for conformance to this

standard. So, you can say that

there is some team building

involved.

It is a culture that answers the

question “Who is responsible

for safety, by saying “Me,” or

“Us.”

For example, it is an individual

who feels comfortable in

interceding to stop a job when

he sees an unsafe act. It is a

management team that

constantly reinforces the

message of intolerance for

substandard behavior, and

rewards and encourages

improvement in the safety

culture. It is a management team

that consistently “walks the

walk,” in addition to just talking

about safety.

Here are the keys to continuos

improvement:

•Espouse safety as a core value

•Provide strong leadership

•Establish and enforce high

standards of performance

•Maintain a sense of vulner-

ability

•Empower individuals to

successfully fulfill their safety

responsibilities

•Provide deference to expertise

•Ensure open and effective

communications

•Establish a questioning/

learning environment

•Foster mutual trust

•Provide timely response to

safety issues and concerns

•Provide continuous monitoring

of performance

In moving forward, we will first

try to increase awareness of our

targets, and goals towards

developing a good safety culture

here at PML Exploration. We

will be having a conversation

about how to reach those

targets.

We will be monitoring and

measuring our success against

the keys to continuous

improvement, as we go along.

I am looking for ideas. I would

love to hear your ideas in how

to develop a good safety culture

in the field. I intend to develop

an incentive program for

reaching our targets. This will

involve training, and

accomplishing a zero accident

environment. Feel free to email

me at rbrian@ pmlogging.com

with your ideas and suggestions.

Not the kind of team building

we were looking for

Now what was that safety culture stuff

you were talking about?

Fat Needed to Function

Besides being an energy source, fat is a nutrient used in the production of cell membranes, and in several hormone-like compounds that help regulate blood pressure, heart rate, blood vessel constriction, blood clotting and the nervous system. Fat also helps maintain healthy hair and skin, protects vital organs, keeps your body insulated and provides a sense of fullness after meals.

However, too much fat can be harmful. Eating large amounts of high-fat foods adds excess calories, which can lead to weight gain and obesity. Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis. Too much of certain types of fats, such as saturated fat or trans fat, can increase your blood cholesterol levels and your risk of coronary artery disease.

Bad Fats

All fats are not created equal. The key is to replace bad fats with good fats in our diet. Saturated fats raise total blood cholesterol levels more than dietary cholesterol because they tend to boost both good HDL and bad LDL cholesterol. The net effect is negative, meaning it's important to limit

saturated fats. Limiting saturated fats in your diet, and eliminating trans fat from partially-hydrogenated oils, is key in maintaining a healthy weight, good cholesterol levels, and avoiding conditions such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Saturated Fat Foods

Saturated fat is most often found in animal products like beef, beef fat, lamb, pork, seafood, poultry fat, butter, eggs, cheese and other dairy products made from whole and two-percent milk. Other foods high in saturated fat include coconut, palm and other tropical oils.

Trimming the Fat

Limit fat in your diet, but don't cut it out completely. Focus on reducing foods high in

saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol, and select foods made with unsaturated fats. Consider these tips when making your choices:

Sauté with olive oil instead of butter.

Use olive oil instead of vegetable oil in salad dressings and marinades.

Sprinkle nuts or sunflower seeds on salads instead of bacon bits.

Snack on a small handful of nuts rather than potato chips or processed crackers. Or, try nut-butter spreads, (non-hydrogenated), on celery, bananas, or rice cakes.

Add slices of avocado, rather than cheese, to your sandwich.

Prepare fish such as salmon and mackerel, which contain monounsaturated and omega-3 fats.

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats have fewer adverse effects, but you still need to consume all fats in moderation. Eating large amounts of any fat adds excess calories. Make sure that fatty foods don't replace more nutritious options, like fruits, vegetables, legumes or whole grains.

Did You Know…? Many foods contain different kinds of fat and varying levels of each type. For example,

butter contains unsaturated fats, but a large percentage of the total fat is saturated fat.

A better option is canola oil, which has a high percentage of monounsaturated fat, but

also contains smaller amounts of polyunsaturated and saturated fat.

Now that trans fat has been

upgraded to the worst kind of

fat, saturated fat comes in at a

close second as the “other”

bad fat.

Walking can add years to your life and life to your years. And it couldn’t be easier. You don’t need to join a health club, wear special

equipment or go into training to reap the rewards:

THE CONDITIONER: Walking conditions your heart and lungs and improves your body’s ability to use oxygen more efficiently. Fact: In one study, women who walked briskly (3-4mph) at least three hours a week cut their risk of heart attack and stroke by more than half.

THE PROTECTOR: Walking helps beat other health problems too. It reduces your risk of some forms of cancer and osteoporosis. It fights the battle of the bulge, reducing body fat and building muscle. Walking can even help people with diabetes reduce or

eliminate their need for medication.

THE JOINT-SAVER: Walking can burn about as many calories per mile as jogging does. But it delivers less of the jolt, so it’s much easier on your joints and muscles.

THE DE-STRESSOR: Walking is easy on your mind too, since it lessens stress and lightens depression. Beginning walkers usually report that they feel and sleep better, and that their mental outlook improves.

THE WINNER: Best of all, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any form of exercise. So you’re more likely to stick with it and get all these benefits and more, like better digestion, improved regularity and lower blood pressure.

At noon on Friday, January 28th, 2011 Bob Cook was celebrated and honored with a

retirement luncheon at the corporate offices of PML. Earl’s BBQ was catered in and many

co-workers were in attendance to show their support for Bob. He spent over 10 years

working for PML as a technician in the Production Department. He always had a witty

comment or a smile to share. He was a dependable and loyal employee and will truly be

missed by all. While employed, Bob worked very hard to streamline processes in production

to allow for better software & hardware rollouts.

Prior to coming to PML, Bob worked for Totco out of Oklahoma City as an Electronics

Supervisor. Bob spent 3 years in the United States Navy as an Electronic Gun Fire Control

Technician after attending the U.S. Navy Fire Control Tech School. Bob also attended

Glendale College and the College of the Canyons, where he received his Electronic

Certification.

We want to wish Bob and his family the very best in all their future endeavors.

Thanks Bob for ten good years…Good luck!

I was working off shore at the time. I was looking for a cell phone, and little did I know she had a thing for ole cowpokes like me. When I was getting my phone we just got to talking and I just could not ignore the fact that this beautiful brown eyed baby girl was staring at me as well. Before I left the store there was a note in my bag saying “if you would like to stare more here is my number maybe over a dinner and dancing night”. Well the Cajun people are famous for their music and dancing, so one night we went out and got to know each other. For three yrs I didn’t have a clue that it would start the true beginning of my life, and not a day goes by that we don’t talk about that very special night. See the Cajun folks have four things they live by; God for one, Family, work and last but not least the party side of us. So, my advice is, a lady is like a rose, if you treat her right, keep refreshing her she will bloom. If you don’t she will welter away and I found out I don’t have to be as smart as I think am sometimes; she was smart enough for the both of us. 12 yrs later still fighting and punching it out but I don’t know where I would have wound up if I wasn’t living what we called the Val la vive if I didn’t. That’s about all I can say. As Cajun folks say it, guys you just there to show up, they make all the rules you just go with it cause if mama is happy EVERYBODY is happy!!

Thank you!

I had went out to a nightclub with my girlfriends to celebrate our college graduation. The club had two levels and the second level allowed you to overlook the dance floor on the first level. My friend Julie noticed a guy dancing with a group of people and commented on his green Adidas sneakers. She loved them and wanted to talk with him so we all went downstairs and approached his group. They exchanged numbers that night. At the same time, I became good friends with another guy in their group. After a month of Julie hanging out with the green sneakers guy, she asked me if it was ok if she called the guy that I had befriended; she had really started having feelings for him. Of course I said go for it, because we were only friends. We all went out that night and the guy with the green sneakers and I laughed and danced all evening. From that day on, he became my best friend and we married two years later.

Come on… Be My

Valentine.
