METRO GRAPHICS Men and women who have tried to sell a home are likely familiar with the phrase "curb appeal." Curb appeal is similar to getting ready for a big date, only you're not dressing yourself up to make a strong first impression. In- stead, improving curb appeal involves dressing your home up in the hopes it makes a strong first impression on prospective buyers, many of whom will have a strong opinion about the property before they even get out of their cars to have a look around. A home with strong curb appeal can entice buyers who are likely to believe that a home with a well-maintained exterior is likely to have an equally impressive interior. Homeowners who want the process of selling their home to go smoothly can improve the property's curb appeal in a number of ways, many of which don't neces- sitate a substantial home improvement budget. Clean up. The most effective way to improve curb appeal is to clean up the property. Many homeowners are savvy enough to remove toys and other items from the yard before showing a home, but cleaning up goes beyond removing clutter from the property. Make sure all hedges are trimmed and remove weeds, sticks and other debris from any flower beds. Lay mulch in the flower beds and garden, as mulch prevents weed growth while helping the soil retain moisture, resulting in more attractive gardens to catch a buyer's eye. Get an "edge" on other sellers. Edging is another easy and effective way to improve curb appeal. Edge driveways, sidewalks and other walk- ways around the property, removing or trimming anything that is hanging over the driveway or walkways. If the boundary between your driveway and lawn is not distinct, consider install- ing edging materials such as stone or bricks. The edging can be level with the driveway or elevated, but keep in mind that elevated driveway edg- ing can protect the lawn, preventing kids from riding their bicycles onto the lawn or cars from driving onto it. Adding edging is not a very difficult do-it-yourself project. Take to the trees. Many homeown- ers grow accustomed to overgrown trees around their property and may not notice that low-hanging, unsightly branches are hiding the home from view. Buyers want to see the house, so take to the trees and trim any branches that hang too low or obscure your home. Clean the gutters. Leaves and sticks hanging from the gutters are a red flag to buyers, who tend to associ- ate clogged gutters with roof damage. Clean the gutters thoroughly before putting your home up for sale and keep them clean throughout the selling process. If your property includes lots of trees, install guards to keep twigs and leaves out of the gutters. Make the home accessible through the front door. Many homeowners enter their home through a side door or through their garage. If you fall into this category, keep in mind that prospective buyers will be entering through the front door, so make this area accessible. Clear any clutter, such as overgrown hedges, away from the front door, and consider upgrading the door handle to a more modern feature. In addition, make sure the lock on the front door doesn't stick, forcing the realtor and buyers to immediately struggle before entering How to Improve Your Home’s Curb Appeal Ensuring a home’s primary entryway is welcoming and well-groomed is one way homeowners can improve curb appeal. STATEPOINT Life has its ups and downs — and adver- sity touches everyone at some point. But some experts believe that a focus on the positive can help you persevere through tough times. For Anita Moorjani for example, life took a horrific turn when she was diagnosed with late stage Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Admitted to the hospital as a terminal patient, Moorjani slipped into a deep coma, nearly dying before she ex- perienced a spontaneous remission and recovery. Her case has since fascinated the medical community. While spontaneous remission of breast cancer is not uncommon, accord- ing to a study done by physician re- searchers at Dartmouth Medical School in 2009, it is rarely seen in a terminal cancer case. “Her recovery was certainly remark- able. Based on what we have learned about cancer cell behaviors, I am unable to attribute her dramatic recovery to chemotherapy. I speculate that some- thing non-physical switched off the mutated genes,” said Dr. Peter Ko, an oncologist. Moorjani attributes her vic- tory in overcoming cancer to a belief in positive things, learning to live fear- lessly, and finally loving herself. In her New York Times bestseller, “Dying to Be Me,” Moorjani candidly shares her story, discussing the les- sons she learned from her near death experience, what she would have done differently and what she wants people to know now. Here are some tips Moorjani feels can help others face their own trials: Prior to her devastating diagnosis, Moorjani’s life was driven by fear of illness. Rather than letting similar fears and stressors get the better of you, learn to enjoy yourself and take care of what’s inside. Much of our suffering stems from feeling “less than.” Love yourself unconditionally and be yourself fear- lessly. Remind those close to you that you love them just the way they are. Don’t obsess over problems or allow your days to revolve around solving them. It’s actually far more productive to distract yourself and stay occupied with activities that stimulate you in positive, creative ways. Thinking positive can be tiring. Never suppress negative feelings when they creep in. Instead of bottling up your emotions, experience them naturally. After all, a bad mood won’t last for- ever. Everyday joys can go a long way toward helping you cope with stress and depression. Be it a box of choco- lates, a home cooked meal or a great bottle of wine, don’t be shy about indulging yourself in moderation at meal time with foods that make you happiest. “What’s most important for your well- being is how you feel about yourself during tough times,” Moorjani says. You can’t always eliminate adversity from your life. In the way of tax legislation, 2011 was a relatively quiet

year. However, that doesn't mean there aren't tax law

changes that will affect this year's tax returns.

"The changes enacted at the end of 2010 will still

impact this year's and next year's federal tax returns,"

says TaxACT spokesperson, Jessi Dolmage. "With the

debate over the federal budget and taxes unlikely to end

any time soon, who knows if the soon-to-be expired tax

breaks will be extended. So, take advantage of all your

benefi ts while you still can."

fifiThree out of four taxpayers receive a federal refund,

and last year's average refund totaled $2,805. To help you

maximize your refund, here are some tax law changes

you should know about before fi ling this year's return.

fifi

Your federal return must be fi led by Tuesday, April

fifi

17, 2012. April 15 is a Sunday and Washington, D.C.,

is recognizing Emancipation Day April 16. Don't use

the extended deadline as an excuse to procrastinate,

though. When you rush, you're more likely to make

mistakes that could cost you money and time. Fur-

thermore, fi ling, paying or providing information late

will result in IRS penalties that have increased this

Though CFLs reduce the demand for power, they can be

dangerous if broken. Broken CFLs can release mercury vapor into the air. While manufacturers are working to reduce the amount of mercury used, it's best to exercise caution when a CFL breaks. Here are a few tips on what to do when a CFL breaks in your home or office.

Prior to cleanup:y Empty the room of people and pets. Mercury vapors can be harmful, so reduce risk of physical harm by asking people to leave the room and take pets with them.y Air out the room. Let fresh air into the room where the bulb broke. Open windows or a door to the outdoors, and air the room out for 5 to 10 minutes.y Turn off the air conditioning or heating system.y Gather materials for cleanup, including stiff paper or cardboard,

how to clean up a broken CFlsticky tape, damp paper towels or wet wipes and a glass jar with a metal lid that can be sealed. If you don't have a jar on hand, a sealable plastic bag will work.

During cleanupy Do not use the vacuum. Though it might be tempting, it could also be risky. A vacuum could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapors, so only use one if there is still broken glass after all other cleanup steps have been taken.y Be thorough. When cleaning, be sure to pick up every piece of broken glass and sweep any visible powder.y Discard cleanup materials. Once finished cleaning, discard the materials used by placing them in a sealable container.

After cleanupy Immediately discard bulb debris and cleanup materials (including vacuum bag if applicable). Place in a trash can or protected area until they can be disposed of.y Be sure you are legally disposing of the materials. Local governments have their own laws about discarding CFLs (broken or unbroken), with many mandating that CFLs be taken to the local recycling center.y Keep airing out the room if possible. Though 5 to 10 minutes might be adequate, when possible, air the room out for several hours. In addition, if possible, keep the heating and cooling system off for a few hours after the bulb has broken.

With technology dominating more and more of people’s per-sonal and professional lives, it’s easy to lose track of passwords for smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops and more. in addition, for many people, keeping track of online user names and passwords for various accounts — email, shopping, social networks, etc. — has also become a hassle, and therefore an inconvenience.

in fact, according to a survey, when given a list of potentially challenging activities, 40 percent of people ranked remembering passwords among one of the top three most difficult tasks. this ranking preceded even balancing a checkbook.

that same survey also found that 70 percent of respondents had forgotten at least one pass-word in a single month, which is why for many, opting for an eas-ier-to-remember, though weaker password is preferred. But weak passwords leave accounts and de-vices more vulnerable to hackers and scam artists, which also plays a role in identity theft. therefore, it’s important to create strong passwords.

Creating a Strong Passwordaccording to the united States Computer emergency readiness team (uS-Cert), following these steps can help you create a stronger password:

■ use a combination of both up-percase and lowercase letters,

numbers and special characters when possible.

■ longer passwords are more complicated and thus stronger. if a website allows for pass-words between six to eight characters, make sure to take advantage of the longer charac-ter allowance.

■ refrain from using personal dates, such as birthdays, or names, such as those of your spouse or child. this infor-mation can be discovered by people within your social circle, as well as hackers, so creating codes around words you’ll remember makes for stronger passwords, rather than full words or names.

■ Do not use the same password across multiple accounts. For example, if you have created a password for online banking, do not use that same password to access your work or personal email account.

For more tips on creating a stron-ger, less vulnerable password, visit www.us-cert.gov/cas/tips.

Conveniently and Safely Store Your PasswordsFor those who have difficulty remembering complicated pass-words however, new services can lend a hand. Norton identity Safe — a free service - allows you to conveniently save and synchro-nize your passwords on all your devices, while keeping you safe and secure. the service also allows you to avoid potentially

risky websites, and share urls via email and social networks safely through identity Safe itself.

With identity Safe you can log in with a single, master password, then access all of your other accounts and passwords through your work or personal computer, or via the app on an iPhone, iPad or android device.

While it may be tempting to create simple passwords to use across multiple devices or ac-counts, taking the time to create secure passwords can save you from having to sort out fraudu-lent charges on banking or credit accounts. it can also save you from the time-consuming process of having to recover from the damages of identity theft.

Want to give your home a fresh look, but don’t have the time or energy for a complete makeover? Ditch the daunting Diy projects. think small projects to make a big impact according, to design bloggers from VeccoStudio.com, an online resource for simple, customizable Diy design projects.

“i like to think that small changes create a mighty wow factor in homes,” says Jamie Wood, design expert and Vec-coStudio.com blogger. “Simple switches like fabrics and display-ing seasonal collections in an interesting way elevate a space from common to highly cre-ative.”

Wood is big on swapping out to celebrate seasonality. the transformations happening outside often inspire her décor on the inside.

Wood’s Seasonal Swap OutsArt: Switch out art in frames with nature-inspired, seasonal illustrations. For example, leaves for fall or flowers for spring.

Furniture displays: Create a “cabinet of natural curiosities” by putting seasonal elements from nature on display. Birds’ nests, seashells, moss and acorns take on a sculptural quality when displayed in groups.

Rugs: Change up area rugs ac-

cording to season using natural fibers such as jute in the summer and shaggier materials in cooler months. Better yet, create your own custom rugs with kits like those from Vecco, which allow you to paint rugs using stencils to create patterns inspired by the season for a truly unique look.

Flowers: if your home receives natural sunlight, try growing plants inside. Bright flowers in pretty and unique pots can bring great pops of color in your design.

Herbs: Growing herbs in a

kitchen window isn’t just pretty, but it also spices up a room with great scents, and of course makes dinner taste better.

Creative Entertaining Don’t stop the refresh at just the décor; entertain the idea of changing up how you host your next soiree.

“unique and quirky elements will stand out,” said Brita Olsen, blogger and design and event planner. “an easy way to give life to a party is putting an unexpect-ed twist on normally expected items, like a super stylish serving platter or antique rose-colored

water pitcher.”

Glassware: Forget the matched set of glassware. Quirky or vintage mix and match glass-ware makes a unique statement and makes it easier for guests to remember which drink is theirs.

Menus: use inexpensive chalk-board paper instead of a tradi-tional tablecloth to transform your table into an interactive writing surface. Or as an alterna-tive, grab candles and write menu items directly on them with a gold paint marker — a menu that melts away as the night wears on.

Curb Appeal

FaMily FeatureS

Homes trap all kinds of smells — last night’s salmon dinner, dirty gym clothes in the laundry basket, the cat’s litter box and more. When it comes to ensuring the home looks, feels and smells clean, 64 percent of homeown-ers have even gone to extreme measures to rid their homes of pungent odors, such as replac-ing a rug or carpet (34 percent), purchasing a new trash can (26 percent) or replacing a couch or another piece of furniture (17 percent),

But if you’ve become accus-tomed to the scents of your own home, how can you really know if it’s odor free? Healthy living expert, Building Biologist and author lisa Beres shares these simple solutions to naturally cre-ate and maintain a fresh home:

Kitchen refrigerator: remove foul odors and stains from left-overs in the fridge by cleaning the drawers and shelves with a homemade cleaning solution. Simply add a few drops of natural dish soap to a bowl of baking soda and stir until it creates a thick paste. also, store an open box of baking soda inside the fridge to help eliminate odors before they start. replace it with a fresh box at least every three months.

Candles and air fresheners: Store-bought air fresheners can contain synthetic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which can irritate eyes, skin and throats, ac-cording to the u.S. environmen-tal Protection agency. instead, create your own air freshener by combining 10 drops of an essential oil — such as lavender or eucalyptus — with two cups

of water.

Pests and repellants: Pesky ants and other insects can make their way into your kitchen pantry when they’re on a mission to find food, but dousing them and your kitchen’s surfaces in toxic repellent isn’t a healthy solution for the home or the fam-ily. instead, set a line of coffee grounds, lemon juice, cinnamon or cayenne pepper around doors and windows to create an effec-tive barrier they won’t cross.

Cooking: Help prevent unap-pealing cooking odors, such as fish, from spreading and lingering throughout the home by upgrading to an odor reduc-tion filter. it helps remove odors and gases from the air pass-ing through the filter and helps keep the home fresh for families and houseguests. Synthetic air fresheners, candles and incense only provide temporary relief from odors by masking them in one particular room but will do

nothing to remove the odors from the entire home.

Damp towels: Wet towels from a shower, a trip to the gym or a day at the pool can be a breeding ground for mildew to develop if they sit too long without drying. to rid towels of the mildew smell, first wash them once in hot water with a cup or two of white vin-egar. then wash them again with a natural or eco-friendly laun-dry detergent. Finally, dry the towels in the dryer on high heat.

How to Freshen Up Your Home, Naturally

the home. you want buyers and their real estate agents to get in and out of the home as smoothly as possible.

Make sure all plants, including flowers, are living.Dehydrated or dead plants and flowers are eyesores, and they will give buyers the impression that you didn’t pay much atten-tion to your property. Make sure all plants are alive and thriving and replace those that aren’t. you can replant new flowers or plants or just use potted plants instead. When purchasing new plants, choose low-maintenance varieties that appeal to buyers who want good vibrant plants but might not want to put in much work into the garden.

When selling a home, home-owners can employ a number of tactics to improve their home’s curb appeal.
