Any other relevant information regarding curricular aspects which the college would like to include. NILCriterion II: Teaching Learning and Evaluation

2.1.1 Student Enrolment and Profile2.1.1How does the college ensure publicity and transparency in the admission process? The admissions to degree classes are governed by the guidelines issued by the Acharya Nagarjuna University. The salient features of the process of admission are

The Principal appoints a committee consisting of five members of teaching staff, one of whom acts as the convener. The committee is entrusted with scrutiny of applications, preparation of selection list and waiting list strictly in accordance with the rules and regulations for admission. The selection lists and waiting lists are prepared strictly in the order of merit, course wise, group wise and medium wise giving preference to students who passed the qualifying examinations in the first attempt.

The committee submits the lists to the Principal. The Principal ensures that the lists have been prepared according to rules.

Admissions are made on the basis of aggregate marks obtained by each candidate in all the subjects of the qualifying examinations.

The rules of reservation are strictly followed in making the admissions. A uniform and foolproof procedure suggested by the University is followed. Any other instructions communicated either by the University or the government from time to time are complied with.

2.1.2 Explain in detail the criteria adopted and process of admission (Ex. (i) merit (ii) common admission test conducted by state agencies and national agencies (iii) combination of merit and entrance test or merit, entrance test and interview (iv) any other) to various programmes of the Institution. No admission test is conducted, as the rules of Government of Andhra Pradesh and the affiliating University do not allow to conduct an admission test, but the merit list is prepared according to the total number of application received against the seats available.

The merit list and selected candidates list is displayed in the notice board for the convenient of the student

2.1.3 Give the minimum and maximum percentage of marks for admission at entry level for each of the programmes offered by the college and provide a comparison with other colleges of the affiliating university within the city/district. As has been said earlier, the college is established in a rural area, we encourage the students by giving top priority of the all interested candidates. The required percentage for admission into under graduate is normally 40%.\

As there is no floating of the students to join degree courses, almost all the students who applied for admission into degree course is admitted here. 2.1.4Is there a mechanism in the institution to review the admission process and student profiles annually? If yes what is the outcome of such an effort and how has it contributed to the improvement of the process? (mechanism to review the admission process and student profiles outcome of the effort for improvement)

Yes.

Above 90% of students who want to join into degree course have come from below poverty line status and therefore the priority will be given during the admissions to encourage them. Most of the parents are not interested to send their children to the colleges. It is because of their poverty that withhold them to send the colleges. Therefore our staff members will canvas during admissions by approaching door to door by convincing them to get their children admitted into degree courses. But as said earlier most of the joined students into degree courses will habituate to work for their lively hood. During the holidays even the working days of the college. So that the staff members happen to see those students engaged in their work the staff counsel and make them realized the importance of studies.2.1.5Reflecting on the strategies adopted to increase/improve access for following categories of students, enumerate on how the admission policy of the institution and its student profiles demonstrate/reflect the National commitment to diversity and inclusion SC/ST

As per the Government norms, differently abled students are admitted into degree courses.

Classes for such students will be conducted on the ground floor and such students are helped by fellow students and also the support staff of our college.

The university also awards 10% of marks for such students.

2.2.2Does the institution assess the students needs in terms of knowledge and skills before the commencement of the programme? If yes, give details on the process.

Yes, all the staff members assess the needs of the students at the beginning of the academic year through questioning. After assessing their background knowledge, they design short term (one or two weeks) Bridge courses and thus initiate them to UG studies.2.2.3What are the strategies drawn and deployed by the institution to bridge the knowledge gap of the enrolled students to enable them to cope with the programme of their choice? (Bridge/Remedial/Add-on/Enrichment Courses, etc.) The students are admitted on the basis of merit, most of them will have low quality skills. Hence at the beginning of the academic year, a bridge course is planned by teachers in their subjects concerned. The bridge course will function as a Refresher Programme and it will help them to recapitulate their previous knowledge and get ready for the next course. Some basic skill tests are conducted in an informal way to assess the performance of the students through seminars, quiz programmes and question games.

A bridge course is conducted in basic grammar principles and LSRW Skills in English. As the students are hailed from low income and illiterate families, they hesitate to come forward and speak. These courses instill courage and confidence among them. In subjects like Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, History, Economics, Political Science and Commerce a course is conducted to revise the topics completed at the intermediate level. Students also find these courses very useful as this is preparing them for the UG syllabus.2.2.4How does the college sensitize its staff and students on issues such as gender, inclusion, environment etc.? Our college follows various mechanisms like establishment of committees, cells, organizing of lectures, workshops etc., to sensitize its staff and students.

Our college is a co-educational institution, students are monitored and lectures are arranged inviting lecturers by the police officials to avoid ragging after completion of admissions.

The Principal used to appoint the anti-ragging / Disciplinary Committee to take care of students. A toll-free number is displayed and circulated to make complaints if they have any complaint Along with this the contact numbers of the Anti Ragging Committee were also circulated.

Womens Empowerment Cell takes care of women students. Gender related issues do not generally spring up because of an impartial and unbiased attitude displayed by the teachers. Time-to-time meetings are conducted to focus on such issues that come up in news papers (Like those of Nirbhaya and Malala) to develop awareness and critical thinking. Through Guest Lectures our institution tries to develop tolerance towards other religions and gender issues. Environmental issues are discussed and topics related to these will be given for development of critical thinking and attitude through Essay Writing, Debate and Elocution Competitions

2.2.5How does the institution identify and respond to special educational / learning needs of advanced learners?

Our lecturers do not openly classify low and advanced learners separately. The input is given in such way that it caters to the needs of both low and advanced achievers. The advanced learners are identified through formative assessment and through active and prompt attendance and student responses in the classroom. These students are encouraged to act as class representatives and they are given special work and encouragement for presentation of papers, seminars to develop their skills in subject knowledge and for the development of higher order thinking. They are also encouraged to take up project work and guide low achievers.

2.2.6How does the institute collect, analyze and use the data and information on the academic performance (through the programme duration) of the students at risk of drop out (students from the disadvantaged sections of society, physically challenged, slow learners, economically weaker sections etc.)? Due to rural setting, our Institution caters only to the needs of the students from the disadvantaged sections of society, slow learners and economically weaker sections. This situation is its challenge and also an opportunity to serve the society. Through formative and summative assessments, the lecturers observe the performance of the students more through classroom performance and behavior.

Our college has been following the practice of collecting feedback from students to assess their interest levels in education, observations about the lecturers and the curriculum they are learning. Thus the data collected is discussed in the staff meetings. The principal and committees meet the students and analyse the issues regarding the drop out of certain students. In spite of the danger of dropouts due to warnings, our institution pursues them to be regular.

The lecturers regularly monitor the attendance of the students and take up counseling sessions for those who are not regular and who appear to join the list of drop outs. The students irregularity is due to their financial backwardness and their requirement for sustenance of the family. Such students are identified and helped by the staff through counseling and financial assistance.

2.3 Teaching-Learning Process 2.3.1 How does the college plan and organise the teaching, learning and evaluation schedules? (Academic calendar, teaching plan, evaluation blue print, etc.)

The Teaching Learning evaluation schedule is prepared well in advance during the summer vacation for the ensuing academic year. Normally the academic calendar prepared by the University reaches us in February/March. Feasible number of hours to be allotted to each paper are suggested. The academic calendar is prepared with the help of the Calendar Committee.

The Calendar committee for the present year consists of Dr. V. Bali Reddy, Lecturer in Telugu, department of Telugu, Dr. A.Kanchiyya, Lecturer in History, department of History with Principal as the Chairman.

The Staff Council plays an important role in the preparation of annual calendar. They decide the number of optional holidays to be given.

The almanac for the year is prepared taking into consideration the number of working days, month wise. The breakup of syllabus unit wise is prepared. For this members of every department meet and prepare the annual academic plan for the whole year in all the papers taught by the faculty. Allowance is made for any unforeseen loss of working days or dislocation of work. While preparing unit wise syllabus the academic plan suggested by the University is followed as far as possible.

The target syllabus month wise is covered by the individuals. Statements regarding the coverage of syllabus are obtained from individuals every two months as a measure of feedback. The information is recorded in the Performance Indicators.

1. Annual academic plan.

2. Coverage of syllabus month wise.

The in-charges of the departments supervise the coverage of syllabus.

At the end of the month each teacher reviews the coverage of syllabus and holds extra classes for the students for whom the targeted syllabus is not covered.

Every lecturer has to maintain a teaching diary in which the coverage of syllabus and a synopsis of the subject taught is recorded. The in-charge of the department verifies the diaries at the end of every month and offers necessary suggestions to the individual lecturers. The teaching diaries are submitted to the Principal once in a month.

In the class rooms a student centric approach is adopted. Smart strategies are used to make the process of teaching a pleasant job. We have a team of well trained and experienced teachers who work with dedication. In the first few days of the academic year the academically backward students are identified and special attention is provided to them.

Students of the first year degree courses who come from a different stream in the +2 stage are provided Bridge courses in some faculties.

Every teacher uses some time to get a feedback from students on the subject he has taught in the previous classes. Special attention is provided to students lagging behind in the class.

Evaluation is mainly through the examinations we conduct. Every year three major home tests i.e. Quarterly, Half-yearly and Hope examinations are conducted. Beside these two or three Bi-monthly tests are conducted. Lecturers allot a few periods for Assignments.

The number of working days is normally 220 inclusive of examination days. We adhere to the working schedule suggested by the University.

2.3.2 How does IQAC contribute to improve the teaching learning process? The IQAC, which we established for effective monitoring of the academic and administrative processes, plays a responsible role. IQAC explains the importance of Teaching-Learning and Evaluation Process and the need for supportive administration.

IQAC also guides lecturers regarding the student-centered methods and helps them in preparing necessary resources.

IQAC helps lecturers in preparing the annual plans, lesson plans, along with procuring of ICT tools from the internet.

IQAC conducts NAAC awareness meetings for staff and students.

2.3.3How is learning made more student-centric? Give details on the support structures and systems available for teachers to develop skills like interactive learning, collaborative learning and independent learning among the students?

In the process of Teaching - Learning priority is given to the learner. There is a lot of diversity in the learning levels of students in each class. Each lecturer is advised to identify the students who are advanced and those who are lagging behind. Our students are largely from rural areas and are accustomed to conventional methods of teaching and learning. We have been inculcating in them a sense of developing knowledge and skills.

Students are encouraged to use the library as a source of learning. They are assigned the task of gathering information regarding the subjects/ topics they studied from magazines and news papers.

They are made to participate in the Teaching - Learning process through seminars where they are encouraged to present papers on selected topics.

The lecturers concerned provide the students the synopsis of the topics covered. The students are given the list of reference books before the commencement of a particular topic.

Many of these students are from very poor families with very little financial support. Their family background has not provided them the necessary awareness in pursuing education on scientific lines. As such we have to adopt different techniques to satisfy the needs of these students from diverse backgrounds when they are taught in a class in combination with the relatively advanced students. Individual attention is paid to students as far as possible.

Field trips and industry visits are taken up periodically to promote experiential learning. Library book exhibitions, academic competitions are conducted. Guest lectures are arranged on important days on topics like great and inspiring personalities, personality development and certain other crosscutting issues. Student made projects, and Seminars are assigned both individually and in groups to promote independent learning. The students browse the internet and complete the project with very little guidance from teachers. Short-term certificate courses also make students more confident and autonomous learners.

IQAC helps the teachers to procure videos and PPTs. The students, though slow in the beginning, turn themselves up and start responding. Thus individual, collaborative and interactive learning is promoted.

2.3.4How does the institution nurture critical thinking, creativity and scientific temper among the students to transform them into life-long learners and innovators? Teaching is carried in a variety of ways - through lectures and interactive methods.

As our institution focuses to some extent on experiential methods like seminars, projects, individual and group work etc., scientific temper and creative and critical thinking skills are nurtured.

2.3.5What are the technologies and facilities available and used by the faculty for effective teaching? Eg: Virtual laboratories, e-learning - resources from National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) and National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT), open educational resources, mobile education, etc. As mentioned earlier ours is a college functioning in a rural area. The students here are used to traditional ways of teaching and learning lecturers are encouraged to prepare models, charts etc. to make their teaching lively. Over the last few years we have been using some modern teaching aids in classroom instruction. In the departments of Botany and Zoology we have Over Head Projectors.

For students of first year and second year degree classes computer systems with listening devices are being used for teaching Phonetics. We use a L.C.D. Projector as a modern teaching device.

2.3.6How are the students and faculty exposed to advanced level of knowledge and skills (blended learning, expert lectures, seminars, workshops etc.)?

In each subject a period a week is allotted to tutorial work. The syllabus is divided into units and in each unit some selected topics are given as assignments. Students are made to work on the subject allotted to tutorial classes through discussion with the teachers. Wherever possible Group dynamics is encouraged on special topics.

2.3.7Detail (process and the number of students \ benefitted) on the academic, personal and psycho-social support and guidance services (professional counseling/mentoring/academic advise) provided to students?

As the students are mostly from first generation rural families, counseling is taken up frequently in and outside classroom. Serious issues related to individuals regarding their behavior etc., are taken up during personal counseling sessions.

Academic and moral counseling is taken up normally in the classrooms and special academic counseling is done through ward-counseling. The ward counseling includes physical, psychological and academic aspects. The students are advised on health related issues, cleanliness, attendance and development of academic activities.

The changes are observed gradually and this has been showing positive results.

Career Guidance and Counseling Cell notifies various employment opportunities and encourages students to utilize such facilities.

To prevent dropout rate due to the non-availability of certain facilities like absence of drinking water, the staff have come up with the idea of jaladaan, through which mineral water is supplied to the students free of cost through the same collective fund. This has prevented many students from bunking the classes on the pretext of absence of water.

This has also controlled absenteeism and drop-out rate.

2.3.8Provide details of innovative teaching approaches/methods adopted by the faculty during the last four years? What are the efforts made by the institution to encourage the faulty to adopt new and innovative approaches and the impact of such innovative practices on student learning?

During the past five years teachers have tried to adopt new techniques in teaching. A Learner centric approach is developed with efforts being made to identify the slow learners and advanced ones where ever needed. L.C.D. and Over Head Projectors with transparencies are used. Students are encouraged to participate in seminars and exhibit their skills through preparation of models. Students are made to play the role of teachers and explain things to their classmates. Field trips and surveys are arranged. Slide Projectors and Bio-visual charts are used to make teaching lively.

2.3.9How are library resources used to augment the teaching-learning process?

Library plays a very vital role (in the college) as a learning resource. In our college students have open access to the library from 09:30 AM to 05:00 PM. If need arises the library works beyond these scheduled working hours. Different classes are allotted different days in the week for issue of books. However they can make use of the reading room whenever they have no classes. Reference books, Public question papers and magazines are made available on request. Students can have access to the reference section during fixed hours with the permission of the Librarian.

2.3.10Does the institution face any challenges in completing the curriculum within the planned time frame and calendar? If yes, elaborate on the challenges encountered and the institutional approaches to overcome these.

The institutional plan is strictly followed and the teachers try to complete the syllabus within the timeframe; but due to the implementation of student-centered methods, certain topics may demand more number of hours can planned. Then our teachers conduct extra classes and revise the difficult topics. We also conduct doubt clarification sessions.

2.3.11How does the institute monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching learning?

Yes. Tutorial classes are conducted for all classes. Each department selects some important questions / topics that are likely to appear in the coming annual examinations and make the students write Assignments. Normally this exercise is done outside the regular working hours. The usual timings for this are from 08:45 to 09:45 AM. Every student has to write a minimum number of assignments.

2.4Teacher Quality 2.4.1 Provide the following details and elaborate on the strategies adopted by the college in planning and management (recruitment and retention) of its human resource (qualified and competent teachers) to meet the changing requirements of the curriculum

Members of the faculty are selected through the process prescribed by the government and the University. Vacant posts are filled up after obtaining permission from the Commissioner and Director of Collegiate Education of Andhra Pradesh. Vacancies are notified on the basis of student strength in each section and work load. Applications are called for from eligible candidates through advertisement in dailies. Selection is made based on the performance of the candidates in the interview and merit. The selection committee consists of the Regional Joint Director, University nominee, Principal and the Correspondent of the college. The selections by this committee are to be ratified by the Director of Collegiate Education.

At present, because of a ban on recruitment of the faculty (except in the case of SC/ST backlog vacancies) in some departments there is a shortage of teaching staff. Part time lecturers are appointed wherever there is need.
