This career development award supports Dr. Humphreys’ pursuit of health services research projects. Dr.

Humphreys is one of five health services researchers in the VA nationally to hold the senior level for this career

research award. This grant runs for 7 years and is renewable indefinitely.

Principal Investigator, “Selection Bias Free Estimation of the Impact of Drug-Focused Twelve Step Mutual Help

Groups”. National Institute on Drug Abuse, Clinical Trials Network Western Node Supplement, 3UG1

This project will use instrumental variables to re-analyze seven previously conducted, federally-supported

clinical trials to generate a selection bias free estimate of the effectiveness of Narcotics Anonymous,

Methamphetamine Anonymous, and Cocaine Anonymous mutual help groups.

Principal Investigator (Multiple PI award joint with Michael Cucciare), “Promoting benzodiazepine

cessation through an electronically-delivered patient self-management intervention”. Veterans Affairs

This project will tailor a self-directed benzodiazepine cessation tool to Veterans and test its effectiveness in

a randomized clinical trial.
