2.1.0 Direct-Attached or Local Backups Figure 2-1:

Filer backupand restore to

direct-attacheddevice

In the direct-attached or Local Backup model, the NVBU Server instructs the NAS Filer to write backup data to the device directly attached to the Filer (via Fibre Channel or SCSI). The backup index information is transferred from the Filer to the Server over the LAN via NDMP. During restore, the Filer reads the data from the direct-attached device on Server instruction. The actual data is not transmitted over the network during backup or restore, eliminating network congestion altogether.

device

In the Filer-to-Filer model, often referred to as Three-way Backup, the NVBU Server instructs Filer A to start backing up data to the tape device attached to Filer B. Backups and restores for Filer B are performed directly, while backups and restores for Filer A are routed through the network. The backup index information is transferred from Filer A to Server over the LAN via NDMP. This model allows sharing of tape libraries among multiple filers.

In the Filer-to-NVBU Server or Filer-to-SmartClient model, commonly referred to as Remote Backup model, the NVBU Server instructs the Filer to perform backup to tape devices attached to the Server. Both the data and the backup index information are transferred from Filer to the Server over the LAN via NDMP.

In this model, the NVBU Server instructs the Filer to start backing up data to the NDMP-compliant network-attached storage device. Via NDMP over the LAN, the data is directly transferred to the tape and the backup index information is transferred to the NVBU Server. The network-attached storage device can be shared by one or more filers, NVBU Server and any number of Clients.

When performing a restore, an error message is produced every time a file is overwritten. This can quickly add up to thousands of log messages causing system degradation. The Filter 1 box on the NDMP Restore Log Filters tab contains a default expression “Warning: cannot create directory” which automatically blocks this type of error messages. BakBone recommends that you do not change the default expression in the Filter 1 box.By default, the text in Filter 1 appears in English regardless of the locale setting for NVBU. This string should match the log messages sent by the NDMP Filer indicating that it was unable to create a directory while performing a restore. If the Filer log messages are in a language other than English, then the text in Filter 1 should be changed to match.

5. Click OK to save the settings.

4.5.0 Configuring Filer-attached DevicesFor the administration of backups and restores to direct-attached devices, the device must be added to the NVBU Server. The direct-attached devices are configured in the same manner as a standard device used with NVBU. Based on the device and its capabilities, NVBU offers the following methods for adding a device:

Automatic Device Configuration – If configuration of the NDMP Server has been performed properly and the storage device to be added is capable of serialization, NVBU will automatically detect the device and begin a step-by-step configuration of the device.Manually Initiating Automatic Device Configuration – While some devices may meet all of the requirements mentioned in the point above, the network configuration of the SAN environment may interfere with the automatic recognition of the device. In such cases, you can initiate a command that forces NVBU to search the network for a suitable device.Manually Adding the Device – Devices that are not capable of serialization will not be automatically recognized by the Automatic Device Configuration tool, and therefore must be added manually. This accounts for some older devices, but manual addition may also be required based on the SAN configuration.

For complete instructions on adding a storage device to the NVBU Server, refer to the NetVault: Backup Administrator’s Guide.
