  • Computer Networks and Bulletin Boards

Computers with modems can be useful tools for obtaining information from selected archives and libraries. In a way, computer networks themselves serve as a library. The Internet, certain computer bulletin boards, and commercial on-line services help family history researchers:

    • Locate other researchers. • Post queries. • Send and receive E-mail. • Search large databases. • Search computer libraries. • Join in computer chat and lecture sessions.

You can find computerized research tips and information about ancestors from New Brunswick in a variety of sources at local, state, national, and international levels. The list of sources is growing rapidly. Most of the information is available at no cost.

Addresses on the Internet change frequently. As of September 1997, the following sites are important gateways linking you to many more network and bulletin board sites:

    • Canada GenWeb

http://www.rootsweb.com/~canwgw/cngenwebe.html A cooperative effort by many volunteers to list genealogical databases, libraries, bulletin boards, and other resources available on the Internet for each county and province.

    • Canadian Genealogy Resources

http://genealogy.about.com/hobbies/genealogy/msubcanada.htm Lists county, provincial, and national sources; personal pages; and publications.

    • Roots-L

http://www.rootsweb.com/roots-l/canada.html A useful list of sites and resources. Includes a large, regularly updated research coordination list.

    CEMETERIES

Cemetery records can be very helpful. Tombstone inscriptions from many cemeteries have been copied and indexed. The Provincial Archives of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Museum have a good collection of these epitaph transcriptions. A list of these holdings can be found in Robert F. Fellows’ Researching Your Ancestors in New Brunswick, pages 236–49 (see the “For Further Reading” section of this outline).

  • CENSUS

The early New Brunswick censuses which list names are basically Acadian French censuses. They provide relationships, ages, and names. They were taken in the years 1671, 1686, 1693, 1695, 1698, and 1701. The censuses of 1703 and 1707 provide the names of heads of households.

The rest of the censuses are as follows:

1714 Head of household (for Acadia and Des Mines) 1714 Names are listed (for the Parish of Beaubassin only) 1731,1733 Head of household in Acadia 1739 Head of household (all Acadia and part of the St. John River

valley) 1762,1763,1767 Enumeration (counting) of inhabitants only 1783 Head of household (St. John River valley) 1803 Head of household (Prince William parish, Hopewell,

Sackville, and Westmorland) 1820 Head of household (Botsford, Dorchester) 1821 Head of household and wife (Grand Manan) 1851 Names, ages, occupations, year entered colony are listed

(whole province) 1861,1871, Names, ages, occupations, religion, etc., are listed (whole

province) 1881,1891, Names, ages, occupations, religion, etc., are listed (whole

province) 1901 Names, ages, occupations, religion, etc., are listed (whole

    province)

The censuses for 1851–1881 are not all complete. Returns for some parishes and sometimes whole counties have not survived. A list of the surviving census returns can be found in Robert F. Fellows' Researching Your Ancestors in New Brunswick pages 128–144 and Genealogist's Handbook for Atlantic Canada Research edited by Terrence M. Punch, pages 7–12. These censuses are available at the National Archives of Canada, the Family History Library, and local Family History Centers. Many of the earlier censuses have been compiled in various genealogical periodicals.

    CHURCH RECORDS

Church records contain baptisms, marriages, and burials. Very few of these records are indexed and most of them are located in the parish itself. Requests for information should be addressed to

  • A great number of church registers have been microfilmed by the National Archives of Canada. A list of their holdings is found in their Checklist of Parish Registers.

The registers of over three hundred Baptist, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Catholic churches are on microfilm at the Provincial Archives which be ordered through interlibrary loan. A list of their holdings can be obtained from the archives.

Many of the above-mentioned registers are on microfilm at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City or at local Family History Centers.

    DIRECTORIES

Many New Brunswick directories up to and including 1900 are available on microfiche:

Pre-1900 Canadian Directories. Ottawa, Ont.: Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions, 1988. (On 4219 FHL fiche beginning with 6360453. These fiche do not circulate to Family History Centers.)

    EMIGRATION AND IMMIGRATION

    Canadian Border Crossing Records

The United States kept records of people crossing the border from Canada to the United States. These records are called border crossing lists, passenger lists, or manifests. There are two kinds of manifests:

    • Manifests of people sailing from Canada to the United States. • Manifests of people traveling by train from Canada to the United States.

In 1895, Canadian shipping companies agreed to make manifests of passengers traveling to the United States. The Canadian government allowed U.S. immigration officials to inspect those passengers while they were still in Canada. The U.S. immigration officials also inspected train passengers traveling from Canada to the United States. The U.S. officials worked at Canadian seaports and major cities like Québec and Winnipeg. The manifests from every seaport and emigration station in Canada were sent to St. Albans, Vermont.

The Family History Library has copies of both kinds of manifests. Because the manifests were sent to St. Albans, Vermont, they are called St. Albans District Manifest Records of Aliens Arriving from Foreign Contiguous Territory. Despite the name, the manifests are actually from seaports and railroad stations all over Canada and the northern United States, not just Vermont.

Border Crossing Manifests. Manifests may include each passenger's name, port or station of entry, date of entry, literacy, last residence, previous visits to the United States, and birthplace. The manifests are reproduced in two series:

    BYU FHLHighlightReligion/Family History CD3648.A1N8

  • • Manifests of Passengers Arriving in the St. Albans, Vermont, District through Canadian Pacific and Atlantic Ports, 1895–January 1921. (608 rolls; FHL films 1561087–499; computer number 423848.) Includes records from seaports and railroad stations all over Canada and the northern United States. These manifests provide two types of lists:

—Traditional passenger lists on U.S. immigration forms. —Monthly lists of passengers crossing the border on trains. These lists are divided by month. In each month, the records are grouped by railroad station. (The stations are listed in alphabetical order.) Under the station, the passengers are grouped by railroad company.

    • Manifests of Passengers Arriving in the St. Albans, Vermont, District through Canadian Pacific Ports, 1929–1949. (25 rolls; FHL films 1549387–411; computer number 423848.) Travel to the United States from Canadian Pacific seaports only.

Border Crossing Indexes. In many cases, index cards were the only records kept of the crossings. These cards are indexed in four publications:

    • Soundex Index to Canadian Border Entries through the St. Albans, Vermont, District, 1895–1924. (400 rolls; FHL films 1472801–3201; computer number 423848.)

The Soundex is a surname index based on the way a name sounds rather than how it is spelled. Names like Smith and Smyth are filed together.

    • Soundex Index to Entries into the St. Albans, Vermont, District through Canadian Pacific and Atlantic Ports, 1924–1952. (98 rolls; FHL films 1570714–811; computer number 423848.)

    • St. Albans District Manifest Records of Aliens Arriving from Foreign Contiguous Territory: Records of Arrivals through Small Ports in Vermont, 1895–1924. (6 rolls; FHL films 1430987–92.) The records are arranged first by port and then alphabetically by surname. Only from Vermont ports of entry: Alburg, Beecher Falls, Canaan, Highgate Springs, Island Pond, Norton, Richford, St. Albans, and Swanton.

    • Detroit District Manifest Records of Aliens Arriving from Foreign Contiguous Territory: Arrivals at Detroit, Michigan, 1906–1954. (117 rolls; FHL films 1490449–565; computer number 432703.) Only from Michigan ports of entry: Bay City, Detroit, Port Huron, and Sault Ste. Marie.

The major port for the maritime provinces has always been Halifax, Nova Scotia. As with the rest of eastern Canada, New Brunswick has a few scattered ship lists for the period before 1865. The few ship lists from the Acadian period can be found at the Acadian Center, Moncton University. There are a few British ship lists from about 1815 to 1860 on microfilm reels F-1697 and F-1698 at the National Archives of Canada.

The Provincial Archives has recently indexed a series of passenger lists. The sub-series RS23E consists of the passenger lists. These lists are for the following ports and years:

    St. John—1816, 1833, 1834, 1838 St. Andrews—1837, 1838 Bathurst—1837

  • Acadian Genealogy

The area comprising today's New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island was once known as Arcadie. Eventually the name became Acadia. The area was first settled by the French, who established Port Royal (present-day Annapolis) in 1605. The territory passed back and forth from French to English hands many times: 1632 (French rule), 1654 (English), 1667 (French), 1690 (English), 1697 (French), and 1713 (English). In accordance with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, France ceded the Nova Scotia peninsula and the New Brunswick area to England. England did little to settle the area, and the French-speaking Acadians were the majority until about 1750. France still retained Ile Saint-Jean (now Prince Edward Island) and Cape Breton Island (now part of Nova Scotia), where Louisbourg became the capital.

A large number of the Acadians were deported by the English from 1755 to 1760. To escape deportation, many fled to Québec or to what is now New Brunswick. In 1759 the Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island areas fell to Britain and the settlers were deported to France. In 1763 France ceded most of its maritime lands to England, and the area became known as Nova Scotia.

In 1769 a separate province, Saint John's Island (Ile Saint-Jean), was established. It became Prince Edward Island in 1799. In 1784 the New Brunswick area also became a separate province. About this time many Acadians who had been deported agreed to sign the oath of allegiance to England and were allowed to take up lands in the Maritime Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island). They worked primarily as farmers and fishermen. For the most part, they continued to speak French and uphold their Roman Catholic faith.

Because of this great dispersion, the Acadian records are only complete for the early years of settlement. There are some good church registers from the late 1600s to 1755. Registers exist for Port Royal only for the earliest years.

The most important remaining sources for Acadian research are:

Parish Registers. Most of the remaining registers are housed in the Centre d'archives de la Capitale in the city of Québec and in Le Centre d'études acadiennes (Center for Acadian Studies) in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Census Records. See the “Census” section of this outline for information about Canadian censuses.

Land Grants. These can be found at the Archives des Colonies in Paris, France, as well as on microfilm at the National Archives of Canada.

Notarial Records. Most of these records have been lost or destroyed as a result of the exile of the Acadians from Canada. There are, however, some records for 1687–1758. These are available at Le Centre d'études acadiennes (Center for Acadian Studies) and the National Archives of Canada.

Other Records. Several sources exist which are primarily Acadian records. These are lists of deported Acadians, Acadians in transit, and Acadians in the British Colonies; petitions of

  • Acadians in Massachusetts; and allegiance lists. These may be found in periodicals published by various historical and genealogical societies.

Good sources for research are Placide Gaudet’s Acadian Genealogy and Notes and Archange Godbout’s genealogical collection. They are both located at Le Centre d'études acadiennes (Center for Acadian Studies) and the National Archives of Canada. Another good source for Acadian research is Bona Arsenault's Histoire & Généalogie des Acadiens (FHL film 873863).

    GENEALOGY

A recent index to many published biographies, cemetery records, census records (through 1881), church records, directories, family histories, genealogies, immigration lists, local histories, Loyalist listings, marriage records, periodicals, probate records, and vital records in newspapers is:

Elliot, Noel Montgomery, ed. The Atlantic Canadians, 1600–1900: An Alphabetized Directory of the People, Places, and Vital Dates. 3 vols. Toronto: Genealogical Research Library, 1994. (FHL book 971.5 D22a.) Indexes over 500,000 names from various sources for the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. Sources are listed at the end of each volume.

    HISTORY

As you do research, it helps to understand the historical events that affected your ancestors and the records made about them. Knowing about these events may also lead you to records, such as military records, that mention your ancestors.

Efficient family research requires an understanding of the historical events that affected your ancestors and the records about them. These events may also direct you to records, such as military records, that mention your ancestors.

Events in New Brunswick history that may have influenced your ancestors and the records about them include the following:

1604 Samuel de Champlain established a settlement on Ile Ste. Croix.

1610 Attempt to settle near today’s St. John. 1631 Charles de St. Etienne established the first permanent

settlement at St. John. During the next 100 years, the French settled Acadia (which included New Brunswick).

1713 By the Treaty of Utrecht, France gave Acadia to Britain. 1755–1758 The French were defeated by the British. Many of them

    were deported, but some remained.

    BYU FHLHighlightF1038.A73

  • 1762 The first British community settled at St. John. 1783 Some 12,000 refugees—United Empire Loyalist families—

came to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. 1783 Founding of Parr Town, later called St. Jean. 1784 New Brunswick separated from Nova Scotia. 1785 Fredericton became the capital of New Brunswick. 1800 Founding of King’s College, which now is the University of

New Brunswick. 1815–1850 The arrival of many immigrants from Great Britain. 1836 The colonial legislature was given control of Crown lands. 1842 The Webster-Ashburton Treaty settled the boundary

between Maine and New Brunswick. 1867 The Province of New Brunswick was formed, being one of

the original four provinces to join Confederation. 1876 Railway linking St. John with Montreal and Halifax was

completed. 1877 A great fire in St. John left many homeless. 1890 The Canadian Pacific Railway from Moncton to Montreal

    was completed.

    LAND AND PROPERTY

The land record collection of the Provincial Archives contains microfilms and originals of many important land transactions. The most useful are the land petitions and the old land deeds. The most helpful petitions were submitted between 1784 and about 1850. In general, the earlier land petitions contain more biographical information. Land petitions after 1850, as a rule, do not provide much information. Land records before 1784 are among the Nova Scotia records. Most of the petitions at the Provincial Archives are on microfilm. The following are also available on microfilm at the Provincial Archives:

General Index of Grants 1785 to 1830 Index to Land Grants 1765 to 1900 Index to Land Grants 1785 to 1852 Abstract Index of Grants 1785 to 1830

After the petition for land was made and the land grant issued, the provincial government was no longer involved in transactions concerning that particular piece of land. The Land Registration

  • Office was created to handle all subsequent land sales. The old land deeds are the most useful of all the Land Registration Office records. They can provide names, dates, addresses, occupations, and similar information. The older deeds contain more information than the more modern deeds. The Provincial Archives have microfilms of these records as well as many indexes and maps.

    MILITARY RECORDS

Some militia muster rolls and pay lists from about 1808 to 1839 can be found in the Provincial Archives and the New Brunswick Museum.

    World War I (1914-1918)

Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) service records are available through the Personnel Records Unit of the National Archives of Canada (see the “Archives and Libraries” section of this outline for the address). These service records contain detailed information from enlistment to demobilization (discharge). Information may include each person's date and place of birth, address at time of enlistment, name and address of next of kin, marital status, occupation, personal description (eye and hair color, height, weight, distinctive marks or scars), and religion. When requesting information from the Personnel Records Unit, please include the person's name, rank, and regiment (where known).

    NATURALIZATION AND CITIZENSHIP

Until 1947, British immigrants from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland automatically became citizens of Canada. They did not need naturalization. Non-British immigrants, however, were required to make oaths of allegiance before receiving land grants. Files containing these oaths and petitions for citizenship covering the years 1817 to 1846 are found at the Provincial Archives.

Records created after 1917 are more detailed than earlier records and are found at:

  • NEWSPAPERS

Many early newspapers mention marriages, deaths, and a few births. J. Russell Harper's Historical Directory of New Brunswick Newspapers and Periodicals, lists the different newspapers in New Brunswick and tells where they can be found. The Royal Gazette has been indexed for the years 1784–1867. This index is available at the Provincial Archives.

    PERIODICALS

Many local periodicals are indexed in:

PERiodical Source Index (PERSI). Ft. Wayne, Ind.: Allen County Public Library Foundation, 1987–. (FHL book 973 D25per; 1847–1985 on fiche 6016863 [set of 40]; 1986–1990 on fiche 6016864 [set of 15]; computer number 658308.) Indexes thousands of family history periodicals. Annual indexes have been published yearly since 1986. For further details, see the PERiodical Source Index Resource Guide (34119).

    PROBATE RECORDS

Probate records include wills, petitions, letters of administration and testamentary, and inventories. Most wills were created by individuals with substantial property. Most poor people, such as farmers and workers, arranged their affairs without legal action. Wills can give relationships, names, and dates.

Until recently, most probate records were held in the county courthouses. These records have been moved to the Provincial Archives. Most of the probate files are arranged chronologically and then alphabetically. Indexes exist for most probate files. Record Group 7 at the Provincial Archives contains probates for the following years:

    Albert Co.1845–1855 (misc.) Carleton Co.1833–1964 Charlotte Co.1785–1965 Gloucester Co.1836–1964 Kent Co.destroyed by fire Kings Co.1786–1964 Madawaska Co.1894–1966 Northumberland Co.1860–1966 Queens Co.1785–1976 Restigouche Co.1839–1968 St. John Co.1785–1904 incomplete to 1963 Sunbury Co.1786–1976 Victoria Co.1845–1960

    VITAL RECORDS

The provincial government began recording births, marriages, and deaths in 1888. For 1810 to 1887 records, there is a “Late Registration” compilation which is indexed. It is located at the Provincial Archives. These records were registered after 1888.

Another dependable source for births and deaths before 1888 is the church register. Records from 1888, although incomplete up to 1920, are available from:

    A. BIRTHS

A1 Late Registration of Births, 1810- Late registration information was submitted by individuals in support of a birth years after the event. The forms used to register the births (Form C-1) include information such as the place of birth, the full name of child, the sex of child, the date of birth, background information on the father and mother, name of doctor, name of informant, date of registration. Up to 1900, these documents are arranged according to the year of the original birth, and coded by letter of the alphabet. Beginning in 1900, they were given a sequential number each year and filed in numerical order. A1a Late Registrations of Births: Index Cards, 1810-1886 [Obselete]

The nearly 25,000 index cards were created by Vital Statistics staff as a reference tool. The cards are on films F9772 to F9783. They have, however, been made obsolete by the creation of a new, more accurate, and more comprehensive index below.

A1b Late Registration of Births: Documentation and Indexes, 1810-1904 The Indexes provided here contain the name of the person whose birth is being registered late, name of father, name of mother, date of birth, place and county of birth, the microfilm number and document code where the late registration form can be viewed. Index to Late Registrations, 1810-1899 F20251 This index includes the names of 45,666 births and is printed in 1202 pages under a separate cover. It is also available on microfilm F . This index replaces the card index in A1a. The information in this index may or may not be included in the Index to County Birth Register found in A2/2 below.
