NEW UD PIANO PROGRAM DIRECTOR TO PERFORM IN RECITAL

N e1JJS Release

Sept. 3, 1992 Contact: Pam Huber

DAYTON, Ohio- Eric Street, recently appointed director of the piano studies

program at the University of Dayton, will perform in his Dayton debut at 3 p.m. Sunday,

Sept. 13, in the Boll Theatre on campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Street will perform pieces by Bach, Mozart, Chopin and Gabriel Faure as well as two

Spanish pieces, "Tango in D" and "Asturias" by Isaac Albeniz. He will also perform George

Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."

He recently returned from his third trip to Russia where made his Moscow and St.

Petersburg debuts, playing duo piano with his manager, Linda Newfield. He performed at the

American embassy in Moscow, and the audience included faculty members from the Moscow

conservatory. Following Street's performance, American Ambassador Robert Strauss led the

audience in a standing ovation.

"It was a real thrill," said Street of the embassy performance. He was the first

American to play in Obninsk, formerly a closed, scientific Russian community, where they

built the refrigerated coffins for Mao Tse Tung and Lenin. "I'm better known in Obninsk

than in Ohio," said Street. He performed twice in Obninsk and also appeared in two

television broadcasts in the region.

Street has taught at Indiana University and Bethany College, where he was the

youngest distinguished professor in the history of the college. "I love teaching piano," he

says. "To me, training a pianist is the most exciting task imaginable. You're not just

teaching a few facts but building a performer. You guide them in so many ways."

He earned his doctoral degree in piano performance at Indiana University, and he

studied opera coaching with Joan Dornemann, head coach at the Metropolitan Opera. He has

appeared in recital with a number of singers from the Metropolitan and New York City Opera

rosters. He toured Japan in 1990, giving 12 recitals in Tokyo, Kyoto and other cities, and he

made his New York debut in Carnegie Hall in 1991. National Public Radio featured him in a

broadcast of ragtime music composed by women.
