IN THE BOX

CAREER SUMMARYTodd Knight has established himself as one of the premier coaches in Newberry history. In his ninth season at the helm, Knight’s 55 wins are second only to the 72 accumulated by Harvey Kirkland from 1952-67.

He is the only 40-game winner in school history with a winning record, holds the all-time record for conference wins with 36, and has the second-highest winning percentage (.556) among Newberry coaches with 10 or more games at the helm.

Four of Knight’s former players are or recently have been in the NFL: Ron Parker (FS) plays for the Atlanta Falcons, Edmond Robinson (LB) is with the Arizona Cardi-nals, and Brandon Bostick (TE) and Corey Washington (WR) are free agents.

Knight played outside linebacker at Gardner-Webb, helping the Runnin’ Bulldogs to the 1987 SAC title, and was a defensive assistant for 20 seasons before being hired as Newberry’s 18th head coach in 2009.

NOTES

A NEWBERRY WIN WOULD• Make Newberry 10-12 over its last 22 meetings with Division I institutions and halt a skid of five

straight losses to Division I schools.• Give the Wolves their first win over Western Carolina since a 17-14 triumph in Cullowhee on Nov.

16, 1963 and snap an eight-game Catamounts’ winning streak in the series.• Be Newberry’s sixth win in 10 season openers under head coach Todd Knight.• Give Knight his 56th career win in his 100th game and move him within two wins of matching

Cally Gualt (Presbyterian, 1975-84) for ninth all-time in SAC history in wins.

A WESTERN CAROLINA WIN WOULD• Extend Newberry’s losing streak against Division I opponents to six games.• Mark the third win in the last 10 season openers for the Catamounts.• Be Western Carolina’s sixth consecutive win over a Division II institution dating back to the 2011

season.• Make the Catamounts 8-4 over their last 12 games.

THE ORDER OF THE GRAY STRIPE• The Order of the Gray Stripe is the Wolves’ football team’s honor council, which can expand when

called upon by the coaching staff. These players will also be the pool from which the game-by-game captains are chosen.

• These players will be easily identifiable on the field of play, as they will be the only players on the team with a gray stripe down the center of their helmet.

A LOOK AT THE RECORD BOOK• Jamarcus Henderson is third among all active Division II players and tied for seventh in all NCAA

classifications with 41.5 career tackles for loss. He also ranks second in school history in the category behind Tony Ransom’s 51.5 from 2003-07.

• Henderson also ranks fourth in school history and tied for sixth among active Division II players with 20.5 career sacks. He is one shy of Ransom and is also chasing Hazel Richardson (23; 1989-91) and record-holder Mark Kennedy (26; 1983-84).

• Markell Castle is in the top 10 of every major receiving category at Newberry; see front page for details.

• Shea Rodgers is fifth in school history with 75 PAT’s made and needs two more made field goals to match Matt Deaton (1995-98) for eighth all-time with 15. He is 46 points shy of entering the top 10 in career points scored. He was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List Monday.

• Joe Blue needs 74 total tackles, 28 solo stops, and 25 assisted tackles to reach the top 10 in school history in each category. Outside linebackers coach Jeremiah Jones currently has the 10th spot in assisted tackles with 126.

• Kevin Weber’s 40.8-yard average per punt is the second-most of any active Division II junior.

DEFENSIVE LINE PLAY• Newberry led the SAC in overall sacks in 2017 with 31. The Wolves’ 21 sacks in league play also led

the conference. One could say the Wolves led the SAC in SAC sacks.

SAC ATTENDANCE• Newberry leads the South Atlantic Conference in percentage of capacity and is second in average

attendance despite only two SAC facilities having a smaller capacity than Setzler Field.

2017 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK• Chance Walker received Special Teams Player of the Week honors in both the South Atlantic

Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference following the Virginia Union game. He returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, becoming the second SAC player in the last 26 years and sixth overall to return a kick 100 or more yards.

• Kevin Weber was named ECAC Division II Special Teams Player of the Week following the VUL game. He was 2-for-2 on field goals (45 and 40 yards), including making Newberry’s longest field goal in 17 years, and averaged 64.3 yards on 10 kickoffs with four touchbacks.

• Markell Castle earned SAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after catching six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 39.3 seconds left, at Carson-Newman on Sept. 23. Five of his receptions went for touchdowns or first downs. Reaching triple figures for the sixth time in his career, Castle moved into a tie for third in Newberry history in 100-yard receiving games and into a tie for 10th with 11 career touchdowns.

• Castle’s second SAC Player of the Week award came after his six-catch, 135-yard performance in the Battle for the Bishops’ Trophy in Newberry’s 34-7 win at Lenoir-Rhyne. Castle caught touch-downs of 12, 26, and 60 yards in the contest while moving into third in career 100-yard games (7), seventh in receiving touchdowns (14), and 10th in career yardage (1,441).

• Shea Rodgers earned his first career SAC Special Teams Player of the Week accolade by going 4-for-4 on extra points and punting five times for a 38.6-yard average with a long of 43 yards at Lenoir-Rhyne. Rodgers is second only to Castle in scoring in 2017 with 34 points.

• Newberry’s Defense earned the award following the season finale against Mars Hill. The Wolves tied a SAC record last equaled in 1993 with six interceptions, tied with Appalachian State (FBS) and Trine (Division III) as the most in 2017 at any level of NCAA football. Newberry ended all five Mars Hill second-half drives with interceptions. The Lions were held to 8-for-25 for 63 yards through the air despite having Division II’s sixth-highest passing average (329.6 yards per game) entering the contest as Newberry set a school record with a 5.2 opponents’ passer rating. The Wolves also had three sacks, seven tackles for loss, a forced fumble, five quarterback hurries, and a pass breakup in holding Mars Hill to 187 total yards, a 2-for-9 mark on third downs, and 0-for-3 on fourth downs. The defense was the first unit or position grouping to win a SAC weekly award since 2012.

football. The Wolves are 3-1 in games played on this date.
