Month of Mary

On Wednesday 1st May there were 2 celebrations to recognise the start of the month of Mary. Firstly, Luke gave a whole school assembly on the rosary. He explained why we say the rosary, how to say it and the prayers involved. Afterwards some children paid homage to Mary by placing flowers around her statue. Joshua, age 8, wrote the following: “The nine First Holy Communion children went to the statue outside and Darcie crowned Mary with a halo of flowers. We placed other flowers at her feet and prayed the Hail Mary together.”

Easter Candles

Last week Father Damian came into school to listen to Luke’s assembly on the rosary. Afterwards, he visited Class 2 to talk about Easter candles and brought the candle with him from Our Lady & St Benedict. The candle, very much larger than any other candle used in the church serves as a symbol of Christ present. The children then made and decorated their own candles using card and tissue paper.

Football Match

On Wednesday 1st May, a year 3/4 football team played a friendly against Our Lady’s in Alcester. We got off to a brilliant start with a goal from Zach but unfortunately it wasn’t long before Our Lady’s equalised. We took the lead for a second time thanks to a cheeky goal from Joshua only for them to score again minutes later. Jonny scored our 3rd goal with a great long range effort but soon after we began to show signs of tiring and the team from Alcester scored twice more to finish 5-3 winners. Albert showed terrific promise in goal and we are very grateful for the practise time he put in at home before the match. Despite the loss, we are immensely proud of how they played as a team and the enormous improvement they showed from their last game.

Marvin the Monkey

In a quest to improve handwriting in key stage one we have recently introduced Marvin the monkey. The children learn through an adventure story with Marvin leading them through the correct letter formation in a fun and easy way. All of them eagerly await the next lesson when Marvin wakes up from his bag and teaches them another letter. Each new letter is learned with story cards and an associated rhyme or ditty, which they then remember and repeat in their writing. In just a short period of time, we are delighted with the vast improvement in their handwriting.

Easter Holiday Success Two girls in key stage one had very busy Easter holidays. Whilst the rest of us were eating chocolate, Sienna and Daisy were busy competing in their favourite hobbies.

Sienna entered two competitions at the beginning and end of the holidays for baton twirling. This event combines dance, agility, coordination, flexibility

and gymnastics while manipulating a baton to music. In the first competition in Skegness, Sienna was awarded three first places for

mascot in Baton, mascot in pom and 1st place in duo baton. We can only assume those trophies are very heavy and that’s why she’s grimacing! In the second competition in Bradford, she remembered how to smile and achieved 1st place for mascot Baton and 1st place for duo baton.

Meanwhile Daisy went to two horse shows with her pony Caramel. In both shows, Daisy won many rosettes and qualified for the Championships where she was awarded Champion lead rein rider and Champion Junior Novice Rider. Daisy told us the following: “I had to do lots of trotting to

win the sash. Caramel is 11 years old and I’ve been riding her for three months.” Daisy proudly brought her winning sash into school for show and tell. Well done girls we are very proud of both of you.
