The earnestly awaited Engineering Council Act was approved by the cabinet. After going through the legal draftsman’s procedure and the parliamentary committee stage the act will be presented to parliament.

Our land at Battaramulla will be developed to construct a five storied building which will house IIESL head office. One floor will be converted to a state of the art training facility, two floors will be rented / leased and the remaining top floor will be made in to a plush auditorium and for recreational facilities. We have received the green light from the UDA to proceed with our building plans in accordance with the land reclamation / UDA drainage plans.

During the current session it is envisaged to enroll 1000 members of all categories to the roll. In keeping with this goal we have been able to enroll 413 Associate Members, 27 Members totaling 440 to date.

Our two overseas branches in Dubai-UAE , Doha-Qatar and the Central Province branch held their annual sessions & AGM’s recently. The events were well organized and patronized by the membership & the annual get together by their families. Our associate organization SPEDA held their AGM & annual sessions with emphasis on having their 25th year celebrations on a grand scale which is due next year.

We have embarked on conducting several CPD programs for the up liftmen of the knowledge base of our members. Points will be awarded for participation and these points can be redeemed when obtaining or upgrading membership. A grand raffle draw with a first prize of a motor vehicle will be launched along with the INCO exhibition launch scheduled for 28th of January as part of our fund raising activities. The new version of IESL web site too will be launched at this occasion.

The flagship event INCO 2016 is scheduled to be held during the latter part of June. A notable event this year is the 30th anniversary of the HNDE which will be celebrated on high note along with INCO exhibition. Another first time event is “INCO Broadcast” to be held in parallel to the exhibition for which negotiations are underway. So, let us group our expertise together and pool all our resources in achieving the vision & goals of IIESL set for the remainder of the current year. Eng. Jagath Arawwawala President

Geometric Patterns & Colours of IIESL LOGO

IIESL News Letter – December 2015 Page No. 04

Page 5: Newsletter 2015 December

Design and Features of IIESL Logo Mathematics and Geometry start from a simple straight line.

IIESL LOGO also starts with a Straight Line. The Straight Line denotes Uniqueness. Then the 1st geometrical figure comes is a Triangle. 2nd geometrical figure is a Square. 3rd is a Pentagon and the 4th is a Hexagon. The last is a Circle.

Path from Straight Line to Circle denotes the Engineering Knowledge achieved through that journey and reaches the state of Incorporated Engineer written in white.

In the IIESL Logo all these figures are shown starting from centre towards perimeter, in different colours.

The Triangle, Pentagon and Gear Wheel are coloured in Yellow. Yellow Colour denotes Unity, Harmony and Satisfaction.

The Hexagon is coloured in Maroon. Maroon Colour denotes Technology & Knowhow.

The Square is coloured in Blue. Blue Colour denotes Environment, Universe & New World.

The Lion placed on the top of the logo denotes Nationality.

Pods of paddy shown either side of the logo denotes Prosperity and Sustainability.

The name of the institution is drawn in White. White colour is used to express Co-existenc, Purity & Neutrality. The name is printed on Blue colour. Blue Colour denotes Universe.

The identity of the institution is written on a Folio ( Path-Iruwa) on the bottom of the logo. This Path-Iruwa denotes Sri Lankan Culture. It is written as one line without lifting the pen from start to the end.

The outer circle of the logo is a Gear Wheel and with the teeth of the wheel the Institution of Incorporated Engineers, Sri Lanka is connected to the outer world.

The Colours used for the Institute of Technology Katubedda and Hardy Center Ampara were used as basic colours for designing IIESL Logo.

Such a Technical Explanation cannot be found in any logo in the world.

Number of Technologists gathered under IIESL Logo is 5000 today. This number is growing daily. One day the IIESL logo will shelter the highest number of members of any institution of Sri Lanka.

In 1990, IIESL logo was designed by Eng. Sanath Rohana Wickremasinghe (1981-1984). He says he is one of the happiest for being able to design the logo of IIESL in which he is also a member. He emphasized that correct colours and correct shape of the logo has to be maintained always.

IMPACTS OF “VAASTHU VIDYAWA” ON YOUR HOUSE Vaasthu Vidyawa is a science which helps to make houses to bring prosperity, health and happiness of the people living there. By implementing Vaasthu Vidyawa people get help from natural resources such as sun, sunlight, air, oxygen, other gases, moon, moonlight, soil, sky, trees, gods, saints and devils. Implementing Vaasthu Vidya procedures in their constructions help people to maintain unity and prosperity of householders make savings from whatever the income they earn, children’s good education, promotions, and the development of the business they do.

To date, I have examined about ninety percent of the old buildings, built by the ancient kings, old houses like “Valauwas” that are still existing, Buddhist temples and churches constructed with the application of theories of Vaasthu Vidyawa. There are separate Vaasthu Vidya theories applicable for religious places.

Almost all the main parts such as doors, windows, ridge plates etc. of a dwelling house represent father, mother and children. The front door represents father, rear door represents mother and other doors represent children. If the rear door is bigger than the front door that indicates, the mother plays the major role of the family. Father is just living without taking any responsibility. So there are many representations of a house that could affect the family in good or bad ways.

The ridge plate represents father. Some people construct the roof without a ridge plate. That roof is called purling roof. In such a house mother earns and runs the family while father remains like a puppet without earning anything. As an example when I came to know such a house, I advised to keep a timber length at least underneath the ridge using two or more vertical struts to hold the ridge plate. I advised a temporary method without removing the roof to save money. After few months later the father got a job. After some time he altered the roof using proper materials such as ridge plate, wall plate, purling, rafters and reefers. Few months later his income increased satisfactorily.

In an incident, about fourteen years ago a young person phoned me and requested me to visit his house. Having agreed, I went to his house in Kadawatha area. It was a two storied building finished up to roof level and the ridge plate had been placed in position. He said after placing the ridge plate work was held up. Carpenter had left the country without informing him. The second set of carpenters also worked only one day. Two months have passed without any progress of the roof. He said, he was planning to get married after occupying the house but still he couldn’t finish the house. I inspected the building from the foundation up to the ridge plate. I could not find any “vaasthu dosa” up to the ridge plate. However I noticed that two timber pieces have been joined together to make the ridge plate. When I looked from slab level the cut made on the wood was perfect according to the drawings. But my experience sensed me that there could be something wrong. There could be nails driven through timber which I could not see. On my instructions house owner brought an old carpenter from a site closed by, to inspect the joint of the ridge plate. He found that a 5 inch nail had been driven through to join two timber pieces and covered the nail head with a piece of timber.. On my instructions, ridge plate was removed and a new ridge plate was brought in. Two sections of the plates were joined by making a proper cut and secured with wooden nails (in Sinhalese we call it timber pen- or pena ). As advised, he placed the ridge plate at an auspicious time. After that, it took only six months for him to complete his dream house. He invited me for the house warming up party where he made a speech to thank me in front of the crowd. Contd. to page 09

IIESL News Letter – December 2015 Page No. 09

From page 09 You may see our ancestors have made use of Vaasthu

Vidyawa when putting up any kind of buildings. There is a

reason, why the nails are not good. The Vaasthu Vidya

theory is, if you nail the ridge plate, Wall plate and or

purling the construction work slows down or holds up.

However there is an exception when fixing rafters. Rafters

can be fixed with nails but they are driven only half to one

inch deep into the timber, not to pass through. If the structure

is completed wrong way, the occupants will have to face

hardships in life. It is believed that some waves are passed

through the body of the timber longitudinally and if you nail

across the body of the timber, those waves are disrupted and

may give bad effects.

Unfortunately some authorities and individuals in Sri Lanka

are trying to destroy Vaashtu Vidyawa. In my view first step

has been already taken. The name of the architecture course

for building construction , “Gruha Nirmana Shilpaya” in

Sinhala earlier, has been changed to “Vaasthu Vidyawa”.

Traditional Astrologists without paper qualifications are

scared to write articles indicating that they are “Vaastu

Vidyakgna”. Anyway, my effort is to educate people to put

up buildings according to Vaastu Vidyawa so they can live

peacefully achieving prosperity in life. And also to educate

masons and carpenters to do a correct job.

Editorial Engineering Should Contribute to Society

Engineering is creating something based on a request from society. Industrializing by undertaking those is called manufacturing.

Engineers have a responsibility to push the country towards a manufacturing economy by introducing more industries to the country. Manufacturing economy is closer to society than an agrarian economy which we are more used to. Most difficult task is to educate politicians who take decisions for the country. Unfortunately there are only few engineers in legislature and generally engineers don’t like to enter politics. We are already late in changing from an agrarian economy to manufacturing economy.

Our ancestors have proved by doing miracles like huge Dagebas and massive Tanks in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. They built them with creativity and their ability to understand nature. In that sense we as a nation, have understood engineering for a long time. We can be proud of our history. But after 1000 years from that era today we have to concentrate for change from agrarian economy to industrial economy which is more economical.

Many countries have developed through industries. Some had raw materials some did not have but they have listened to engineers and have implemented engineering.

To transform a country from agrarian economy to manufacturing economy understanding that industrial sector is more profitable is the most important. Then school education has to be developed accordingly. Political stability and political leadership are also vital.

Engineering is an act of planning and designing something that contributes to society by using and arranging science and technology. Engineers have proved by various means that they are ready!
