Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of the Hill

United Presbyterian Church: As we arrive in the Advent and Christmas Season, over against the “bad news” that the world often gives us, the messenger of God, the Angel, announced this to the shepherds in Luke 2: 10: “...I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; …” What amazing and awe-inspiring news that was and is and ever-will be: that “God with us (Emmanuel)” has come in Jesus Christ! Because of Jesus’ birth, life, ministry, and resurrection, we can live in the lively joy of faith, hope, and love, engaged in spiritual, abundant, and eternal life. I pray for you a Blessed Advent and Merry Christmas! I am also grateful to God for being able to serve as your Pastor over these past fifteen years in our service and witness together for Jesus Christ. Thank you for your support, prayers, cooperation, and love!

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,

the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be yours!

Pastor Clark

Rev. Clark T. Sawyer

Come and be with us in this Advent and Christmas Season, inviting and bringing friends, neighbors, and family members. Blessings to you!

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

LETTER OF APPRECIATION FROM A STUDENT IN GHANA

I am in the person of Matilda Stella Ayesu, a 20 year old third year student at the Catholic University College of Ghana situated in Fiapre, Sunyani. I am in a four year degree programme in Public Health and Allied Sciences Informatics to be precise. My current grade point average is 3.10. Religiously, I am an active member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana which is a sister church to the Hill United Presbyterian Church, USA. It is in the view of the scholarship offered that has made me write this short letter of appreciation so as to show my gratitude towards your humble assistance and to also say a big thank you for all you have done for me and members of my church. It is with regret that I could not write to you earlier due to some circumstances beyond my control. I sincerely apologize for my inability to write to you within the shortest possible time. I will be glad if you could please kindly pardon me. At this juncture I will like to thank the entire congregation of your noble church for everything you have done for me. May the Almighty God continue to bless you in all your endeavors and may He continue to shower His abundant blessing on you. Thank you Yours faithfully Matilda Stella Ayesu (Catholic University is affiliated with Boston College and Catholic University of Washington D.C. Fiapre is a small town just northwest of Sunyani, the Regional capital of the Brong Ahato Region of Ghana, a region in west-central Ghana. It is northwest of Accra about 200 miles. The town is near pottery making, Kente cloth weaving, and wood carving facilities.)

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO STUDENTS The Task Force spent an evening in early November signing and preparing Christmas cards for our current class of 46 students. These cards were mailed out just prior to Thanksgiving.

PRAYER CONCERNS CONTINUE Please continue to keep the Bubiashie District churches, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie Scholarship Committee, as well as the students, and Joshua Heikkila, the West Africa Liaison for the PC(USA), in your prayers. James Ihlenfeld for the Ghana Mission Task Force

“Keep Me Warm Trees” We will once again this year be asking for contributions to decorate our “Keep Me Warm Trees”. We will have one set up in the Church Annex and another in the Fellowship Hall downstairs. Your gifts of mittens, hats, scarves, socks, sweaters, and other warm winter clothing will be greatly appreciated. They will be taken to local organizations to be given to folks in need. Bless each of you for your generosity.

Hill Church – Changing Lives for Jesus Christ!

“You will be enriched in every way for great generosity… to God…and for all others.”

The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee would like to thank the members of the Hill Church family

of faith for generously pledging their time, talent and treasure during our 2016 stewardship campaign. To

date Hill Church has received 57 pledges totaling $122,307.

You may never know how deeply a person’s life has been changed through the ministries and programs

offered at Hill Church. The person whose life has been changed may be the one who sits beside you

during Sunday worship. Or, it may be someone you don’t know who receives a bag of groceries from

Covenant Cupboard to feed his family. But because you support the ministries and programs of Hill Church

lives are being changed every day for Jesus Christ!

If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider how you can support the work of Hill Church.

You may contact the church office for a pledge form or you may contact Elean at the church office and she

will take your pledge by phone.

Thank you for honoring God through your support of the ministries and mission of Hill Church. Your

generosity and commitment is deeply appreciated.

The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee

Update from the Forward in Faith Task Force

The Forward in Faith Task Force completed its report and submitted it to the Session at the November 9, 2015 Session meeting. The report contained a summary of data and information collected from the congregational survey and from the October focus group on missions. The Session will take time to review this report and will discuss it at the December Session meeting. At that time the Session will decide how to share information from the report with the congregation. As part of its report, the Forward in Faith Task Force recommended that two more focus groups be held during the next six months. The topics for these focus groups would be Christian education and accessibility of the church building. More information will be forth coming if the Session decides to schedule these focus groups. The Forward in Faith Task Force would like to thank those from the congregation who participated in this process. It is our hope that the information received will be useful as we search for a new pastor.

Stewardship and Mission Support Committee Year End Reminders December 27th is the deadline for receipt of any offerings to be included in the 2015 financial statements of Hill Church and on the final individual giving statements mailed to our donors. All checks and donations must be dated on or before December 27, 2015 and received in the church office by noon of that date. Boxes of offering envelopes for 2016 will be labeled and set out on tables in the overflow area of the church. You may pick up your box of offering envelopes anytime between December 13 and January 3, 2016. Boxes of envelopes that have not been picked up by January 3, 2016 will be mailed. A number of members have asked about the first envelope in the box entitled “Initial Offering”. Money received through the “Initial Offering” is used to help offset the cost of purchasing boxes of offering envelopes and if necessary mailing those boxes. Please note that it is likely that your offering envelope number will change each year. Please remember to use your new offering envelopes beginning on Sunday, January 3, 2016 so that Elean can properly credit your offering on your giving statements.

From Jamie Petroski: Hi Elean My son sent this letter to the church thanking them for the scholarship for his college education. Could you please share with appropriate parties? Thank you! Dear Hill United Presbyterian Church, I am writing to thank Kathy Sawyer, Clark Sawyer, and the all of Hill United Church for the generous opportunity you've given me to further my studies and the amazing experiences I've received over the years through Hill United. From the mission trips that I have been on, to the plays that you have produced, I cannot explain in words how much I absolutely adored taking part in all of it. They truly were amazing life-changing experiences, especially the Hill Youth Chorale. The trips that took us around the country to sing were very life-changing and I am still extremely grateful for those opportunities. With the church scholarship, I've been able to kick-start in my education in music and get all of my theory books! I also cannot go without mentioning how much fun and how thankful I am to have been able to perform in so many master classes and recitals, along with the early lessons I had received when first starting piano. From singing so much in Chancel Choir every Sunday and Hill Youth Chorale every other Sunday, I have improved my hearing/ singing skills in and outside of the classroom at school. There are so many people I'd like to name personally for my church experiences. Thank you Kathy Sawyer, for always keeping me in line and being an AMAZING leader, whether it's in HYC or our next play production. Thank you Clark Sawyer, for being the best and kindest pastor in Butler, and never failing to tell exhilarating sermons that send a deep message. Thank you Steve Arn, for being an excellent youth leader to me and everyone else in the mission trips that I have taken part of over the years. Thank you HYC, for being an astonishing group of singers and friendly group of people. Thank you Chancel Choir, for also being an astonishing group of singers and friends that always sing their heart out at the wake of dawn. Lastly, I'd like to thank everyone involved in making the Church plays come alive every year without fail. It always astounds me how quickly you are able to put together an amazing full production within a limited amount of time not once, but twice a year. Once again, I would like to thank all of Hill United Church for the countless memories that have made a very positive impact on my professional and social life. You have helped me and guided me in the best way possible to be the best I can be, and I cannot thank you enough for that. Everyone from Hill United Church and the memories you have given me will live with me forever. Sincerely, Jona Brown
