Hanging of the Greens Service
Sunday, November 29 - 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary
Advent is a season for preparing, not only do we prepare
our hearts for the celebration of the coming of the Christ
Child, we also prepare the Sanctuary for this festive
time!. The service will be family-centered, including children
as readers and participants. Following the service, we will
have refreshments and Christmas caroling in the Parlor.

A Note from the Senior Pastor
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.
Luke 6:23
Christmas is a vision that enables all of us to look around us and see what is amazing and good in our lives. It is a reminder that we all need the laughter of God to keep us from taking ourselves too seriously. I think of it as the Christian idea of humor that says whatever falls into the earth will rise again. Our laughter is the echo of Christmas joy in each one of us.
If you really understand and accept the mystery of Bethlehem, “glad tidings of great joy,” you heart will be filled with the laughter of God. “You are sad now but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy, and that joy no one shall take from you” (John 16:22).
I know that Christmas is a season of busy and hectic, my prayer for you is that every day, you would take a moment, look around you, experience the joy, the laughter, that is in Christ Jesus.
Peace,
A Note from the Associate Pastor
16 The word of Christ must live in you richly. Teach and warn each other with all wisdom by singing psalms,
hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 Whatever you do, whether in speech
or action, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus and give thanks to God the Father through him.”
Colossians 3:16-17 (CEB)
The other day I wandered into Lowes. I was in need of a few nails to hang pictures, but when I entered the
doors I had to stop and check my watch. Yes, it was still November and I wasn’t going crazy, but the Christmas deco-
rations are already out! What happened to Thanksgiving? Thankfulness is not something that comes naturally to
most of us, even us Christians. It’s a skill that we have to develop, but like any other skill the only way to do this is
through practice.
One of my favorite ways to practice this is to keep a thankfulness notebook. Before bed every night, write
down 5 things you are thankful for. They can be small (someone who smiled at you) or huge (family and friends).
Everyone can find five. If you do this, each day it will become easier. You will start to notice those things for which
you are thankful, and you will become thankful for more things. This holiday season, let’s not skip over thankfulness
or the joy that it brings.
Blessings,

Service of Hope
Sunday, December 20 at 6:00 pm
in the Sanctuary
The magic of the holidays is often missing for those suffering grief and loss. Bright lights and the
sounds of Christmas Carols do not always lift heavy hearts. If you or someone you know is experiencing
the loneliness and sadness of loss, you are not alone. On December 20, the longest night of the year,
First United Methodist Church of Nacogdoches will have a worship service honoring and remembering our
losses in a place of faith, hope and love, where prayers, music and messages will comfort and uplift you.
This service will be held in the Sanctuary at 6:00 pm. First United Methodist Church is located at
201 E. Hospital Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. For more information, contact the church office at
936-564-8308.

Chancel Choir Cantata
Sunday, December 13 during the 10:55 am Traditional Worship Service
Magnificat: Mark Hayes setting of the "Song of Mary" from Luke 1: 46-55 is a
lyrical and poignant setting of one of the earliest Marian hymns in
Christianity. Hayes combines the purity of the Latin text with English for the sake
of congregational understanding to bridge past traditions with a fresh, vibrant
setting of the text in a contemporary manner. We hope you will love it!
Sunday, December 13 at 9:45 am in the Family Life Center
Children are invited to “Journey to Bethlehem.” Pass through time and into the days when
Jesus was born.
Sunday, December 20 at 9:45 am in the Chapel
During the Sunday School hour, Children’s Ministry will have a Live Nativity in the Chapel. Come visit
the Holy Family. You are invited to take pictures with your children and loved ones. Please bring your children

COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING SERVICE
Each year the churches of Nacogdoches sponsor a Thanksgiving Service and
Dinner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2508 Appleby Sand Road. The ser-
vice is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Monday, November 23, 2015 followed by
dinner at 7:00 pm. Rev. Leo Douglass from St. Paul’s CME will be deliver-
ing the thanksgiving message.
Thanksgiving meals are also delivered each year to those who are home-
bound and to poor families in the Nacogdoches area. In order to provide the
necessary amount of food, we need six volunteers who will agree to cook a
turkey and deliver it to the gym at Sacred Heart by noon on November 23,

noon (2 – 4 pm) on November 23. Everyone is invited to join the Commu-
nity Choir which will rehearse on Sunday, November 22 at 3:00 pm at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church. If you would like to participate in this mission
of sharing during the Thanksgiving season, please email - [email protected] or call Sharon Bright in the

HELP US DECORATE OUR CHURCH
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…
At least it has been if you have been in any store. The first Sunday of Advent is November 29
and by then the church will be decorated as well. The Worship Committee will be decorating the
Sanctuary and other areas of the church on Sunday, November 22. If you could help that would
be great! If you have questions contact Caryl Hall, 936-560-3322.

ANGEL TREE
Angel Tree (Nov 22 - Dec 6)
During advent there will be a tree at the “Preschool Reception Area”
by the FLC decorated with “angel” cards, each representing a child
who has at least one parent in prison. Each card has the sizes and the needs of the child. Choose an
“angel” from the tree and buy presents for him or her, totaling around $50. The gifts are collected at the
Church (by Sunday, December 6) and delivered to the children in the name of their parent, along with a per-
sonal message from the parent to their child. Remember to pray for these children and their parents, that
God will be very real to them this Christmas and that they may be reunited next year in a Christian home.
CALLED CHARGE CONFERENCE A portion of our regularly-scheduled Church Council Meeting on Thursday, December 3 at 5:30 pm in the Parlor
will be a Called Charge Conference. Church Council Chairs, please be reminded to email [email protected] your
reports by Thursday, November 19 to be able to view it online.
BRING A FRIEND TO CHURCH SUNDAY On Sunday, November 29, 2015 the First Sunday in Advent.
We hope you will bring a friend to church with you. Help us initiate the glorious season of Christ Birth.
MISSION NEWS Volunteers needed for Nacogdoches County Christmas Blessings
This year’s event will be held at the Expo Center on Wednesday, December 16th
. Love INC, Toys for Tots, Empty
Stocking, and other organizations have united in this event to qualify participants and avoid duplication. There are a
wide variety of activities that you can participate in to help the Love INC staff make this a wonderful Christmas for the
working poor and others in need.
Set Up – Love INC will collect toys and other donations up to the event. The day before the event, Tuesday, De-
cember 15th, they will set up the Expo Center like a “store”, sorting toys by age and gender. MANY volunteers
are needed to put this together. You may want to encourage your UMW Circle or Sunday School class to partic-
ipate. They will begin at 9:00 AM and work until they are “done.” Depending on the number of volunteers, they
are usually through by 5:00 p.m.
The BIG DAY – December 16th. They need ‘shoppers’ to walk around with the clients while they choose gifts for their
children. There is also a place for children who come with their parent to do crafts. Volunteers are needed to
supervise the craft area while their parents shop. Clients will have assigned appointment times, and volunteers
can sign up to help in 3-hour increments beginning at 8:00 a.m. The event will last until 8:00 p.m.; volunteers
are needed to help with “tear down”.
Provide refreshments for the volunteers – You are welcome to provide refreshments for volunteers on December
16th.
Love INC wants to thank those volunteers who have helped in the past. They hope you will join them this year.
This is as much of a blessing to the volunteers as it is to the clients! For more information, call Love INC at 936-
569-8555.

2015 Advent Bible Study Sunday Nights at 5:00 pm from Nov. 29th-Dec. 20th
In the coming weeks of Advent, I hope you will join us in exploring the meaning of Christ’s incar-
nation, through an innovative study entitled Embodied Light. The book, written by Melissa Tid-
well, provides short daily readings (2-3 pages) to re-focus your day and help to explore the pur-
pose of the season of Advent.
We will be called to deeper faith, incorporating our whole selves (body, mind, and spirit), as we
seek to follow the fully human/divine Jesus Christ. The study will be led by Rev. Trent Oliver.
Please contact the church office or sign up on the sheets just outside the sanctuary. (Books will
be $10).

GREETING MINISTRY
2016 Greeting Ministry
The greeting ministry is one of the most important ministries of our church. It’s a way
we participate in God’s prevenient grace, which beckons us to come and bids us to
grow. Our greeters’ warm welcome and smile are the true beginning of worship to-
gether in our community.
Since this ministry is so important, we are working to expand the greeting ministry,
and that’s where you come in! If you feel called to practice hospitality and make oth-
ers welcome, we would love to invite you to become a part of the greeting ministry.
Our greeters sign up for a month of at a time. What this entails is coming 15-30
minutes before service and welcoming people. That’s it! As soon as service begins, you are welcome to return to your
seats and worship like normal.
I hope you will consider serving next year with our greeters. There will be a training/interest meeting on Dec.
6th in the sanctuary immediately following both services. If you are interested, please contact Rev. Trent Oliver at
When the church went into our remodeling program we ask the Red Cross to take us off the shelter list. We think it is time to “re-enlist” in some form or fashion. There are several options open to us and what sheltering could look like for us in the future. But first, we need to retrain and organize. The Red Cross would like to come in and spend a few hours with as many of us who would volunteer. They will guide us through some new approaches and skills we need to learn to be certified as a RC shelter. If you are interested and will give a small amount of your time to train, we need for you to sign up. When we get a good list together, we will set a date for the Red Cross to come in and take us through the course.
You do not need to call the church office. Just contact Jim Jenkins at 936-554-1408. As the list grows, he will post it near the office along, with any other needed information. This Church has always had a heart for sheltering, and we know you will respond to this call for help.

~~~Thank you for your help in decorating the Church Sanctuary this Christmas~~~
THANK YOU
The words “thank you” are spoken by people every day. They are used at every type of event. However, at this time they are just inadequate to express all my feelings. I cannot imagine shaping words into sentences that would be moving enough or powerful enough to express the honor I feel. The oak tree dedicated by the Church is a symbol of fidelity and strength that far exceeds any contribution I may have made. The announcement in Church
stunned me. Pastor McDonald’s words at the dedication overwhelmed and humbled me. The efforts of many people were necessary to compile the survey that the Pastor spoke about at the dedication. It was a yearlong project by the trustees in 2014 and implementation began this year. The work produced a property- condition report and ten-year plan for repairs and renewal. However, I stress to you, this was group effort. So when you see them you should thank, Colleen Abernathy, Jerry Andis, Jim Jenkins, Bob Palm, Brian Payne, Pat Rayne, Sam Smith, Bob Stevens, Dawn Stover, John White, and Tim Young. Moreover, your prayers and thoughts of stewardship should now be directed to our church’s Finance Committee, for it is they who will determine or develop the ways and means to complete the work. Thank you,
Harold Hall
