IMPORTANT INFORMATIONIt appears that the Tweed Council rangers have been consistently patrolling the front of the school and taking photos of cars in "no stopping" and "bus zones" and parents have been receiving fines. Please make sure that you are dropping off students in a safe and legal manner. We have also been informed that the Swimming Pool car park 3 hours limit will be enforced.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTWelcome BackWelcome back to Term 3, the term has jumped off to a flying start. We held our Semester One Academic and Citizenship Awards Presentation last week with some 250 students being acknowledged and applauded for their contribution to our school and community and for their achievement during Semester One, the reward for hard work and consistent effort. A very “well done” to all recipients.

Year 11 StudentsThis week quite a number of our Year 11 VET students have been placed in local businesses for their first workplacement session as part of fulfilling HSC course requirements. You may have seen them in cafes and restaurants or on construction sites and manufacturing centres. It is always rewarding to hear how successful these placements are with students often receiving offers of employment as a result. All Year 11 students should, at this point be preparing for their first set of HSC style examinations which are scheduled to start in just over a month.

Performance & Exhibition Evening - All WelcomeNext week is NSW Education Week and Tweed River High School will be flying the flag for public education again with our Performance and Exhibition Evening on August 7 from 5-8pm. The program is being finalised with Dance performances – including our primary schools and Music recitals by our students. The organising team have a range of food stalls arranged including Aussie BBQ, great coffee, wood fired pizza, hot soup and popcorn. You will have the opportunity to speak with members of the P&C and hear how you can be involved in our school and your child’s education here. There will also be a range of exhibitions highlighting the curriculum offerings at our school along with a mega raffle with prizes including a Byron Bay getaway. I would ask you to spread the word and encourage all members of our local community to come along on the night at least for a slice of pizza and a “snag” to celebrate and support the ongoing success of public education in this area.

Year 12 StudentsOn August 13, Year 12 commence their final set of school based exams “The Trial” before the HSC. These students are already starting to feel the end of school life approaching – some with mixed feelings about that. We wish them well in these exams and encourage them to put their “best foot forward” in the coming weeks and push themselves to achieve those final few marks.

Reports and Subject SelectionSemester One Reports will be issued in the coming week for Year 7-10 prior to 2019 subject selection beginning later this month. Students are asked to keep an eye out and prepare for these decisions so they have time to make considered choices about want they would like to study in 2019. Timetabling decisions for 2019 will be made on the basis of the choices the majority of students make in coming weeks.

Mr B Mackney,

Relieving Principal

During the July school holidays our local community NAIDOC March was held from the Civic Centre in Tweed Heads to Jack Evans Boat Harbour. The Tweed Aboriginal Community joined with our brothers and sisters from our local Queensland community at the NSW/QLD border. Celebrations of song and dance were presented in the park. Our student Rhiana Leaupepe Perkins performed the song “Took the Children Away” which was very touching, Rhiana also performed with the Aboriginal dance group.

This years’ theme celebrated Aboriginal women “Because of Her We Can”, there were many acknowledgements made during the celebration in reference to our local Aboriginal women who have made and continue to make an impact in our local communities, our families and our rich history to our nation.

A big thank you to our SRC members and school captains, Corey Cox, Hine-Rei Berryman, Amelia Watson and Jazmine Cooke who took the time during their school holidays and marched with our community members. Congratulations Tweed River High School in being the first school to take part in the Tweed Heads and Coolangatta NAIDOC celebrations. This reinforces our commitment to Indigenous culture and the local Aboriginal community.

2018 Ski Trip to Mt HothamThe snow conditions were favourable for the 2018 ski trip this year with all except 3 lifts operating over the mountain. Our group enjoyed the accommodation at Leeton Lodge, managed by ex TRHS teacher, Mr Kirk. With lessons, everyone improved and were able to enjoy their improved skills going down the slopes with Mr Lennox and Mrs Ryan in the afternoon. The groups cooking and cleaning ability shone and I miss their catering now that I am home.

Compulsory School Attendance Information for parents

NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES LEARNING & ENGAGEMENT WWW.DEC.NSW.GOV.AU

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

. What are my legal responsibilities?

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards for homeschooling.

Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

The importance of arriving on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day

Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

Give students time to greet their friends before class

Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.

What if my child has to be away from school?

On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

being sick, or having an infectious disease

having an unavoidable medical appointment

being required to attend a recognised religious holiday

exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)

Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.

Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why.

Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.

Travel

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

In some circumstances students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s school principal.

Can you offer safe temporary accommodation to a young person?Seeking Family Carers in Lismore, Grafton and Tweed Heads

Connecting You supports young people aged 12-15 who are at risk of homelessness. This includes providing accommodation in a safe, home environment while we support them to develop positive strategies and life direction

We have opportunities for Family Carers who:

• live in or near Lismore, Grafton or Tweed Heads• have a spare room in their home• are interested in and respect young people• are flexible, tolerant and understanding• have time to spend with a young person one on one• want to make a difference• don’t have young children at home; and• own a comprehensively insured car.

Ideally, you will have experience with young people (12-16 years) as a par-ent, a teacher or in a similar role. You may have recently retired or be work-ing from home. Full training and support is offered for the right candidates. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.

Generous tax-free retainer offered with additional payments for each night’s accommodation provided. Placements are for a maximum of 28 days at a time.

Family carers help young people to take time out in a safe environment, while they work through challenges with a Case Manager. This role is critically important because it allows breathing space for the young person and their families, while they help to heal ruptured relationships and explore long term solutions.

“You need to have time to spend with them, find out what they enjoy doing – but you also need to give them space. And have a good sense of humour!” says Stephen*, a Family Carer. “Another good thing is pets. We have two dogs and two cats – so there is instant connection.”

“We have found this experience really rewarding. Being a retired school teacher, it is a great thing that I can do. The best thing is being able to provide a safe and welcoming environment for these young people who need some time-out” says Stephen.

Carers can be of any cultural or religious background; they can be part of a couple or single; studying, or retired. The Family Carer role attracts a retainer to ensure that carers are exclusively available. Specialised training, includ-ing supporting young people affected by trauma, is provided as well as intensive support from Pathfinders thera-peutic specialists, and Social Futures case managers.

If you think you have what it takes to be a family carer and give some respite and relief to a young person who needs it, contact us today.*Name changed
