I would start this month’s letter by simply saying “thank you”! Thank you to the Taste of Vegas committee that has been working

since October to make our first event of 2014 such a huge success. If you were there, you might guess that it took way more than nine committee members to pull of such an event. The food, the drinks, the raffle items, the entertainment, the photo booth, the gaming- Wow, and thank you!

Now that Taste of Vegas is behind us, we begin to look forward to the Firecracker run. Once again, we will be relying on our members to work together to pull off another successful event. As with Taste of Vegas, there are many areas for members to get involved with this committee. There are currently 30 committee members, with room for more. If you’re interested in becoming more involved through committee participation please contact the Chamber office to get signed up on the committee. Our 30th year will be our biggest yet!

Finally, by now you should have received your 2014 Membership Directory & Community Profile. I’m sure you’ll agree that once again, our own Sara Henderson has done a great job designing this piece. I’d like to encourage each of you to use this directory daily, keep one in your car, one in your office and one at your house; only have one? Stop by the Chamber office to pick up more. This is such a wonderful resource to have readily available for all of your community and business needs.

As always, I hope to see you soon. Jeff Arneson2014 Chairman of the Board

construction of these facilities. Those bonds must be approved by the voters tied to a property tax increase (see chart) that would be in place for 20 years. A 4/7 majority of those voting must vote in favor of these projects in order for the City to proceed.

PRoPosition J

Proposition J asks voters to approve the construction of a new Justice Center in the City of O’Fallon. If approved, the Justice Center will provide the City with a 21st Century police and courts facility that will meet the needs of the City for decades to come.

When the O’Fallon Police Station opened as part of the current Municipal Centre (City Hall) complex in 1999, the City of O’Fallon was approximately one quarter of the size that it is today. At that time, even the most optimistic projections called for the City’s population to grow to around 60,000 residents by 2015. Today, however, O’Fallon’s population exceeds 81,000, and it is only expected to increase over the next 40 years.

This growth means that the O’Fallon Police Department has had to expand at a much faster pace than was anticipated. The Department has outgrown its current home and needs more space to meet the needs of the community both now and in the future. The new facility also would provide a permanent home for the City’s Municipal Court, which presently meets in a temporary setting in a City Hall meeting room. City staff is researching possible locations for the new Justice Center so we can quickly begin building the new facility if voters approve the bonds.

PRoPosition P

Proposition P will allow for the completion of two significant Parks and recreation projects: improvements to Civic Park, including a new Civic Hall and expanded Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center, and the construction of a brand new park off of Highway DD called O’Day Park. These Parks and recreation projects will allow the Department to expand recreational opportunities on both the City’s north and south sides, and will increase the amount of parkland in the City by more than 10 percent.

tHe iMPACt on ResiDents

If these projects are approved by O’Fallon’s voters, there will be an increase in the City’s property taxes. Based on the value of your home, the following chart shows the anticipated property tax increase if the City levies the maximum of $52 million for all three projects (beginning in 2015).

huge thank you to everyone who made the 2nd annual Taste of Vegas casino night

such a smashing success! Over 300 people were able to sample cuisine from the finest restaurants in O’Fallon, as well as sampling brews from Krey Distributing including their new Mang-O-rita and raz-Ber-rita drinks. Major Brands distributing brought in some of their top selling liquors, plus Mastermind Vodka made fabulous cosmos and chocolatinis.

Guests were greeted with a tray and a stemless wine glass sponsored by Marshall Ford and entered the transformed gymnasium of the O’Fallon City Hall where Nick Calandro set the mood with a variety of Sinatra and Tony Bennett songs. After our party-goers were filled to the brim with delectable eats, the casino tables opened and guest really got into the Vegas spirit. While everyone took their turns on a variety of casino tables, some took a spin on the dance floor to the music of the Tom Christopher Band. Elvis made his grand entrance via spotlight and entertained everyone for the rest of the evening.

Not only were our attendees able to taste great food, sample from the best drinks available and dance the night away with a terrific band, they were also able to step into the photo booth and get silly with several props and funny accessories thanks to Trotter Photography. Cindy Wiltse with CPI Photography was also walking around capturing all of the casino action, and our beautiful guest dressed to the nines.

After the casino tables closed, everyone traded in their winnings for prize tickets for a chance to win some of the fabulous prizes donated by several Chamber members. A separate raffle with prizes such as a flat screen TV and a set of tires were also sold.

The casino committee was very excited to have had such a fantastic second year event go off so smoothly and couldn’t have done it without all of the sponsors, restaurants, volunteers, and chamber members. Thank you to everyone whose hard work made all of those goals a reality. Casino night proceeds benefit the mission of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce and allow the Chamber to keep their dues low for all types of businesses to participate.

y name is Bethany Brady, and I am the owner and operator of Enterprise Massage Services. I have a wonderful husband and

two young boys. We enjoy camping, science fiction, ham radio operating, and crafts. My family moved to O’Fallon in 2010 from West County. Before that, we lived in Collinsville, IL, and Olathe, KS, due to the nature of my husband’s job. These moves were planned, so I took advantage of the opportunity to stay home with our young children and wait to pick up my massage therapy career. They often enjoyed the benefits of having a massage therapist in the house to help ease growing pains and headaches. I maintained my qualifications and volunteered at events though until our youngest son started preschool. I started work again at a spa in 2012 and really enjoyed working with clients and other massage therapists.

I kept hearing from my clients that they wished they could get massage at work, especially when I would be working on the clients shoulders, back, arms and hands. So I asked the spa if there was a way I could stay employed by the spa and offer clients mobile chair massage at their offices. The spa said that was not part of the franchise business model.

As a result, I left the spa in 2013 to start an independent practice with a dynamic business model: to offer both mobile services for short sessions

and a treatment room in a brick-and-mortar location for longer sessions. I am passionate about helping my clients find relief through touch therapies like massage. Standard massage techniques are frequently modified for the individual client. Access and affordability are also just as easy to customize. I didn’t know why these services weren’t mainstream: so I took it as a challenge to try to make it so.

One unique service I offer include a 20 minute full body stretching session which is gentle enough for children and seniors, and effective enough for the most competitive athlete. Another unique service offered is an open ended focused therapy session for acute pain events, where the goal is to help gently relieve discomfort and to guide home care choices until the client can be seen by a physician. This often involves more stress relief techniques related to frustration over being injured and anxiety about potential missed work or limited mobility. Techniques aim to interrupt the out of control pain cycle with relaxation, as well as using touch without movement to areas surrounding the injury which helps reduce swelling.

It is important to note here that I am not qualified to diagnose, nor to treat certain conditions. I strive to follow Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics laid out by industry regulators, such as the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and

memBer sPotLiGhtbeThany braDy

M Bodyworkers (NCBTMB) and the Association of Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP). This means I often check to confirm that services I offer are covered by my license to practice massage therapy. This is a burden of time and due diligence that I gladly bear for my client’s sake. And I often refer my clients to professionals like chiropractic physicians and family practice physicians for diagnosis and treatment plan recommendations before my service can continue. I consider myself an advocate for my clients, helping them to reach and maintain relief and wellness as much as I can within my scope of practice. I actively pursue connecting with health care providers to be able to refer my clients to others who are qualified to provide services needed that I cannot provide, such as registered dietitians, laser vein specialists, even to other massage therapists who specialize in techniques I have yet to learn or who have extended hours of availability.

Proactively participating in the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce and visiting BNI groups and other networking events has provided me with amazing opportunities for education for myself and the community.

Prior to assuming her current position in 2010, King served as Director of Taxation and Fiscal Affairs for the Missouri Chamber. In recent legislative sessions, King has been the lead lobbyist helping secure the passage of millions of dollars of tax relief for Missouri employers. In 2009, King took the lead on passing legislation that eliminated the franchise tax for small Missouri employers. That provision was passed as part of House Bill 191, an economic development bill. King also was a key lobbyist on Senate Bill 30, legislation that provided tax exemptions of sales tax on utilities, chemicals and inputs used by manufacturers. Her strong presence in the Capitol on these and numerous other tax issues has enabled Missouri employers to hold the line on taxes at a critical time for our economy.
