During the 2014 Emmanuel College Dance Marathon, several student-athletes filled leadership roles on the planning
board while countless others served as general members in an effort to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network and
patients at the Boston Children’s Hopital.
Athletes are competitive by nature. It’s what defines sport. There is a winner, a loser and very rarely any middle ground. On March 22 & 23, the Emmanuel College Dance Marathon team scored a huge win raising $67,700.13 in funds that will go directly to the Boston Children’s Hospital. This year’s total was more than $15,000 dollars higher than their goal and lifted the college’s three-year total to over $127,000 dollars. The ECDM board made up of 17 full-time Emmanuel students featured six student-athletes. Senior men’s basketball player Brandon Jones (Windsor, Conn.), junior men’s soccer player Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.), freshman men’s soccer player Wojciech Kopacz (Garfield, N.J.), senior women’s soccer player Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.), sophomore women’s soccer player Jess Dasilva (North Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore women’s soccer player Ari Cardillo (Richmond, Mass.) represented the student-athlete
population on the board. Planning for the event began last summer as board members began delegating tasks and responsibilities in preparation for the big day. “It’s amazing how much work went into making the Dance Marathon a successful event,” said Cardillo. For this year’s Dance Marathon, Cardillo was appointed co-chair of Sponsorships and Fundraising, a daunting task that required countless hours of work and outreach to local businesses in an effort to raise money and awareness for the cause. “We got a lot of no’s at first and it was frustrating for sure,” said Cardillo. “It wasn’t that businesses didn’t want to contribute, they did, but many were already donating directly to Children’s [Hospital].” Dasilva, in charge of Food & Catering found similar struggles at first. “First semester we struggled to get any restaurants or companies on board,” said Dasilva, “but second

By the Numbers – The Emmanuel College men’s and women’s lacrosse teams combined to go 9-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action during the month of March. This marks the first time for both programs that a team has gone undefeated in conference play during an entire month of action.

726 By the Numbers – Emmanuel College junior men’s volleyball player Ashanti Jackson (Sacramento, Calif.) recorded his 726th kill in a 3-0 win over Emerson College on March 29. The junior is currently seventh all-time in career kills and needs just two more to move into sixth place.
Women’s Hoops Land Two on GNAC All-Conference TeamsEmmanuel College junior forward Lena Negri (Arlington, Va.) and sophomore guard Sarah Higgins (Groveland, Mass.) were named to the GNAC Women’s Basketball All-Conference Teams. Negri was tabbed a First Team selection while Higgins was named to the Third Team.

Ashanti JacksonMen’s Volleyball
Junior outside hitter Ashanti Jackson (Sacramento, Calif.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s
Volleyball Player of the Week for his play during the week of March 17-23. The California native averaged a double-
figure kill total over his four matches played and swung at a clip of .354 for the week with 51 kills in 96 total attacks. He
averaged 3.19 kills, 1.75 digs and 0.81 blocks per set on the week. His overall standout week included smashing down a
season-high 19 kills to lead the Saints to a 3-2 win over Wentworth. The outside hitter hit at least .400 in three of his four
matches played during the week he was honored.
Val KiersSoftball
Sophomore pitcher Val Kiers (West Warwick, R.I.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of
the Week for the March 3-9 week. In her season debut, Kiers tossed five innings of three-hit ball to lift the Saints over Pitt.-
Geensburg. The season opener was Emmanuel’s first game in the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic played down in Myrtle Beach,
S.C. Kiers pitched efficiently, allowing just one walk and one run, while recording one strikeout, over her 21 batters faced
in the victory.
Kristen TulejaWomen’s Lacrosse
Sophomore middie Kristen Tuleja (Mansfield, Mass.) was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conferenc Women’s
Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll for her play during the week of March 17-24 and the GNAC Player of the Week during March
25-31. Over the two week period, the sophomore scored 21 goals to go along with 11 assists the help the Saints jump
out to a 5-0 record in GNAC play.

Women’s Lacrosse Tops Simmons, 11-10, in 3OTBOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore middie Kristen Tuleja (Mansfield, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal 56 seconds into a sudden-death third overtime to lift the Emmanuel College women’s lacrosse team over Simmons College, 11-10, on March 25 at Roberto Clemente Field. The win for the Saints was their first-ever over Simmons since the teams began competing in 2011.
With the score deadlocked at 9-9 after regulation, Emmanuel took a 10-9 lead 59 seconds into the first overtime session as Tuleja finished a feed from freshman middie Abaigeal Merrigan (Rye, N.H.). The Sharks responded with a free position score from junior attack Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.) with just five seconds left in the first OT to even the score at 10-10.
A scoreless second overtime period included a pair of brilliant saves by EC sophomore goalkeeper Lauren White (Lynnfield, Mass.) and forced the sudden-death period, setting the late-game heroics for Tuleja.

Dance Marathon cont.semester things picked up in full force when we moved back onto campus. Once we were able to lock in our first two sponsors in Ally’s Doughnuts and El Pelon, more and more continued to come in.” Other food sponsors for the Dance Marathon included Pizzeria Uno’s, Tasty Burger, Whole Foods, JP Licks, and Pepsi. Like the food donations, sponsorships began rolling in closer to the actual event as Cardillo and her crew were able to secure raffle items from the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Bruins and Boston Harbor Hotel. “The raffle that we were able to assemble based on the donations was incredible,” said Cardillo. “The raffle alone raised somewhere in the $1,000 range. We had bids coming in up until the very end which was exactly what we wanted.” And in the end, hundreds of Emmanuel students, faculty and friends of the college came out for a night to remember. There were many laughs, hugs, tears and of course dancing as the community went non-stop from 10:00 PM until 10:00 AM. For the final hours, families and children from Children’s Hospital joined the celebration for the big moment in which the team would reveal the total amount that was raised. “We were all incredibly anxious, excited and nervous all at once,” said Cardillo. “A couple of weeks before the event, our coordinator told us we were still under our goal to push us through the end. Turns out we were already over our goal but that push helped put was well over the mark which we couldn’t be more proud about.” “This event was blood, sweat and tears for our crew,” said Dasilva. “This
team put everything into it and the results show that hard work, dedication and commitment payoff.” Looks like the Saints were able to apply some of the lessons they learn on the field, off the field this time around but to them, the Dance Marathon was much more than just an event. “It was the best night of my life,” said Dasilva. “It really was, making the kids smile and seeing how strong they are at such a young age put everything into perspective. If they can fight for something, so can we.” Cardillo echoed the same sentiments saying, “The Dance Marathon was an eye opening experience for many people including myself. I have aspirations to go into the medical field and this event goes to show that even without a license to practice medicine or a fancy piece of paper that says I’m a doctor, that I can still help people and make a difference. Everyone involved with this project did just that. We made a difference and I’m so proud to be a part of such a hard working team.” Dance Marathon is a nationwide movement involving college and high school students at more than 150 schools across the country, all raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in their community. These students spend a year learning invaluable leadership and life skills while raising funds and interacting with children’s hospital patients and families. After three years of involvement, the Emmanuel Dance Marathon efforts ranks within the Top 5 for funds raised among all college, university and high schools in the Northeast region. Congratulations to the entire EC Dance Marathon team!

Break InviteTrack Opens 2014 Season at Wesleyan Spring
Junior Ryan Thomas placed second in the 110mH event with a time of 16.16 seconds which qualified him for the DIII New England Championships.
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Teams kicked off the outdoor season by competing in Wesleyan University’s Spring Break Invite on March 22. The Saints ran well in their first met of the spring season, posting 16 top-five finishes, including five Division III New England Championship qualifying performances and one ECAC New England qualifier.
Freshman Ashley Brooks (Danvers, Mass.) and senior captain Kelly Ulf (Lunenburg, Mass.) led the Saints in the field, topping the podium in the women’s high jump. Brooks captured 1st place with her jump of 5’1. Ulf snagged 2nd place, jumping 4’11.75”. Both athletes’ jumps qualified them for the Division III New England Championships.
Ulf went on to notch 2nd place in the long jump, reaching 15’9”. On the men’s side, senior captain Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.) also took 2nd place with his leap of 20’4.50”. Perdue captured a top-five finish on the track as well, crossing the line 4th in the men’s 100m with his time of 11.66.
Senior Nate Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) returned to action with a pair of victories, topping the ticket in the men’s 110mH and in the men’s 800m. Bruno’s 110mH time of 15.51 was a personal best and qualified him for the ECAC Championship. He also ran a 2:00.69 time in 800m.

Emmanuel Hosts 2014 MIAA High School Tournament Games
Over the Emmanuel College spring break week, the Massachusetts
Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) hosted a pair of State
Tournament basketball games in the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium.
On Friday, March 8, the Fenway HS girls basketball team squared off
against the New Mission HS squad while on the boys side, the Saint
Mary’s HS (Lynn) team took on Saint Clement HS (Medford.)

events. Junior Ryan Thomas (Wakefield, R.I.) ran well, despite his knee injury and took 2nd place in the 110mH with his Division III New England qualifying time of 16.16. Thomas also qualified for the Championships in the men’s 200m, racing to his PR time of 22.99 and picking up his second 2nd place finish on the day.
Senior captain Chris Baker (Holden, Mass.) raced to a 2nd place finish in the 800m with his time of 2:01.30. Senior Patrick Callan (Pawling, N.Y.) ran 5th in the 800m with his time of 2:07.32.
Junior Chloe Egan (Burlington, Vt.) took home 4th place in the 400mH with her time of 73.21. Senior captain Meghan Mauer (South Hadley, Mass.) grabbed 7th in 76.22. Sophomore Zoe Pierce-Dickens (Franklin, Vt.) sprinted to her personal best time of 65.57 in the 400m, crossing the line 5th overall.
The Emmanuel distance runners also faired well on Saturday. Sophomore Richard Thompson (Norwood, Mass.) chased down 1st place in the men’s 3000m. Thompson’s time of 9:47.85 was a personal record. Classmate Thomas Tallo (Lincoln, R.I.) ran his PR time of 10:20.23 for 6th place in the same event. Freshman Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.) ran 4th in the 1500m with a time of 4:26.49. On the women’s side, Julie Roberts (Williamsburg, Mass.) crossed the line 2nd in the 3000m with a time of 12:15.76.
Freshman Katherine Zombik (Holyoke, Mass.) notched a trio
of personal records on the day, including her 4th place time of 16.93 in the 100mH, her 31.18 sprint in the 200m and her 63’4” launch of the javelin. Also notable on the afternoon was senior Richard Morrow’s (Woodstock, Conn.) personal best throws of 41’8” in the discus and 84’8” in the javelin.
The Saints are slated to compete every weekend in April. They travel to UMass Dartmouth (4/5), Wesleyan University (4/12), MIT (4/19) and Regis College (4/27).

On Friday, March 21, Emmanuel College softball Head Coach Rob Spofford coached his EC softball squad to a 5-3 victory
over Colby College, notching the victory over his daughter Robin Spofford who is a first-year player for the Mules.
Prior to the start of the game, the Emmanuel College athletic department took a moment to honor the unique moment recognizing the fact the Spofford was coaching against his daughter Robin, who started her first collegiate game for the Mules as the designated player.
“It was a very special moment for me and my wife,” said Spofford. “I had been Robin’s coach since she was playing ponytail so to see her develop into a collegiate athlete was an incredible journey. To be able to coach against her in her first collegiate game was special beyond words.”
After the ceremony, Spofford rallied his Emmanuel troops for an impressive 5-3 victory over Colby for the program’s first-ever softball win over an institution in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).
EC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of a few early base on balls that turned into runs. Sophomore shortstop Catherine Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) drew a walk to lead off the game before senior designated player Jennifer Garrity (Lynn, Mass.) followed suit. Freshman first baseman Susie Kieselback (Wethersfield, Conn.) drove in Davis to make it 1-0 with an RBI double to right field. Freshman left fielder Samantha Adams (Sandford, Maine) drew the third walk of the inning to load the bases with nobody out. Colby senior pitcher Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, N.H.)

The Saints made sure not to waste the bases loaded opportunity though as senior third baseman Kayla Howard (Belmont, N.H.) reached with an infield single, knocking in Kieselback to make it 2-0. Next up, senior catcher Julia Levins (Uxbridge, Mass.) drew the Saints fourth walk on the force in Adams to bump the hosts lead to 3-0. Polimeno was then able to retire the side with another groundball out, stranding the bases loaded.
The Saints made it 5-0 with a pair in the fourth. Adams delivered the big hit with a two-out, two-RBI single to left to give Emmanuel the five run cushion.
The Mules made things interesting in the fifth, scoring three runs to cut their lead to 5-3 heading into the late frames of the contest. With one out, sophomore Carylanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine) singled up the middle and next up, freshman Katie McLaughlin (Glenburn, Maine) also reached with a single up the middle to put two on with one out. Freshman second baseman Robin Spofford (Cohasset, Mass.) loaded the bases with a walk. Colby got on the board with an unearned run as junior second baseman Meghan Lewia (Wells, Maine) reach via a fielder’s choice where the throw to the plate was dropped to score Wolfington. Next up, junior Erica Pulford (Glen Rock, N.J.) connected on a two-RBI single down the right field line to make it a 5-3 game. Sophomore shortstop Emily Schatz (Lyman, Maine) walked to load the bases but EC sophomore pitcher Val Kiers (West Warwick, R.I.) was able to get out of the jam with a groundout to second to retire the side.
Freshman Jill Kilcoyne (Worcester, Mass.) relived Kiers in the sixth and recorded the final six out to preserve the win and earn her first collegiate save, striking out four batters. Kiers earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the year, scattering four hits while striking out two.
