Year 3/4 It is another busy start to the term. This week students are able to view the items available at the Book Fair. During Week 2 students will be able to bring money if they want to purchase any of these books etc. Thursday Week 2 is our School Book Fair Parade. Students are asked to come dressed as their favourite book character and participate in the parade. Next Tuesday, 25th July, we have approximately 12 girls and boys participating in the PSSA Touch Footy against Narromine PS here in Mendooran. These students have been given a permission note that they must return to Mrs Norwood or the office before Tuesday. Starting this week, on Thursdays period 5, during the next five weeks our class will participate in the Primary Rugby Union Skills Program. This term, 3/4 will be investigating The Solar System/Space with Mrs Davis in Science. We wish Bailey Thompson the very best of luck as he travels to Sydney to participate as a Para-athlete in the State Cross Country! We look forward to hearing of his result! Our class has been producing some great artwork. In keeping with the current season, 3/4 created winter silhouettes using the technique of paper tearing.

V Parnaby

Kindergarten Welcome back to Term 3! We hope everyone had an enjoyable and refreshing holiday. The students have returned to school in a very settled frame of mind which is great to see! This term our focus will be on increasing our reading fluency and comprehension of text, extending our sight and written vocabulary to thirty words and on counting forwards to 30 and beyond and counting backwards from 20. The students have a good understanding of the names of the basic shapes and now are learning to recognise the number of sides and corners. The students have also been discussing the days of the week. In Art this week we discussed and painted patterns using the colours of the Aboriginal flag.

Year 1/2

Welcome back to Term 3! The year is absolutely flying by and students have worked hard so far. I hope to see everyone put in as much effort for the remainder of the year. In Week 6 we have our K/1/2 excursion to the Warrumbungles. If you have misplaced the note for this excursion you can get another one from the Front Office. The veranda outside our room (on the stage) has been overflowing with jumpers, hats, drink bottles, containers, tracksuit pants and much more. If your child has misplaced any personal belongings they may be there. Students need to come and have a look. Unnamed clothing that has not been claimed for many weeks goes over to the clothing pool in the Front Office. We have not had any homework this week in class - it will go home on Monday. Students have been reminded every day this week that they can grab a home reader. We are beginning a History unit about Celebrations and students have already been able to identify a number of holidays and celebrations and what makes them unique. We are also beginning to look at the Weather and Seasons in Science. On Tuesday we watched a short clip to find out the difference between the weather and seasons. Students were interested by the information, so we then looked up the weather on the Elders weather site for Wednesday to find out it would be very cold and there was a high chance of rain (it turned out to be a very cold and rainy day indeed!).

Year 5/6

Welcome back everyone for an exciting and productive Term 3. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday. In Literacy during Week 1 we have been concentrating on a range of different text types including both recounts and writing a resume. For Spelling we have been focusing on the “m” sound as in “Mum”. For Grammar we have been looking at anagrams. An anagram is a word made by rearranging all the letters of another word. The students used critical thinking skills to make numerous anagrams. Some examples are; antler - learnt - rental and mean - name - amen - mane In Maths we have been focusing on whole number. We have been using a range of strategies to order numbers in ascending and descending order which include negative integers. In Geography we have started a unit called A Diverse and Connected World. We are learning how nations interact with one another for a range of different purposes. During the discussion we discovered that 11 out of 19 students had shoes that were made in China. This made the students realise we connect with other countries on a daily basis.

Secondary News All secondary students across Years 7 to 12 are about to embark upon the adventures of learning poetry.

Years 7-8 Stage 4 will be looking at a selection of poems that are centred on an environment and sustainability theme. These poems will introduce students to literary exercises, poetic devices, and songs as poetry, whilst educating them on the importance of looking after our environment.

Years 9 -10 In our war poetry unit students will be introduced to poetic devices and language, and will be encouraged to recognise the emotion and beauty that poetry has to offer. War poetry is an intriguing genre that will have the ability to engage students in the works of: Lord Alfred Tennyson, Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon, Thomas Hardy, David Campbell, Dylan Thomas, John McCrae and Robert Laurence Binyon. The poems will be taught alongside related song materials such as: Zombie (The Cranberries), I Was Only 19 (Redfern) and Hero of War (Rise Against).

Year 11 English Through the study and analysis of Bruce Dawe’s life and his following poems students will develop an understanding of how the ideas, forms and language of a text interact within the text and may affect those responding to it: ‘Homecoming’, ‘Enter Without So Much as Knocking’, ‘Life-Cycle’, ‘Home Coming', ‘Homo Suburbiensis’, ‘And A Good Friday Was had by All’, ‘Weapons Training’

Year 12 English Year 12 will be completing a study and analysis of Wilfred Owen’s life and his following poems. Students will develop an understanding of how the ideas, forms and language of a text interact within the text and may affect those responding to it: ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’, ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori’, ‘Futility’, ‘Insensibility,’ ‘Next War’.

English Homework Homework will be given out weekly on a Monday and it needs to be returned on Fridays. For homework to count on the tally board it needs to not only be handed in, but it also needs to be completed. I have a handful of students in each class who are now creating superb study habits whilst others could use some improvement. The homework over the course of the year will be a series of reading comprehension, writing and research tasks. I have designed these tasks to help address the areas of need as demonstrated in our NAPLAN and assessment results last year. These tasks are not designed to be overly difficult but they are needed to help our students develop their writing and comprehension skills. If anyone wishes to contact me about this program please feel free to call me at the school or we can arrange a meeting.

Deadly 7’s Rugby Union Program Mendooran Central School will be participating in the Deadly 7’s Rugby Union program on Thursday afternoon over the next 5 weeks. This program provides primary school students across Australia with their first taste of rugby, whilst also educating them about the importance of education and healthy lifestyles. Luke Mack, the Rugby Union Development Officer for the Western Area, will be facilitating the lessons on Mendooran Oval. Students will walk across the road and be supervised by their Classroom teacher. Please ensure your child comes to school in full sports uniform including appropriate footwear. It is also recommended that students wear a hat and have sunscreen for the day.

Tell Them From Me survey Our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. Our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is confidential, is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 21st August and 13th October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey has been sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 11th August. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
