FAREWELL: On Wednesday we said goodbye to our caretaker “Chuck” as he is retiring
after working at the school for almost 12 years. His final job as caretaker was to open our
new sensory room, which will be known as the “Chuck Hughes Sparkle Room”.
THINKING DAY: To celebrate Thinking Day on Monday
22nd February, the first day back after the half term
break, all Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs and
Scouts, if they would like to, may wear their uniform to
school.
CONGRATULATIONS: To Grace Hamilton, in Year 4. The name she suggested for
the new housing development at the top of Green Lane has been selected by the
developers, David Wilson Homes. She was presented with a certificate and her prize in
today’s Celebration Collective Worship. The development will be called FIVE ACRES.
CHURCH VISIT: As part of their RE studies next week, all the children in years 3, 4, and
5 will be visiting St Mary’s Church. They will walk down and back during lesson time. If you
have any concerns or would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact
Miss Thompson who is arranging the visits.
-
THE RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET: The children in years 4 and 6 have been
invited to watch the dress rehearsal of the Teesdale School production of “The Return to
the Forbidden Planet” on Tuesday afternoon, 9th February. They will have an early lunch and
walk over to Teesdale School for the show, returning before the end of the school day. If
you would like any more information about this trip, please contact your child’s class
teacher.
VACANCIES: We currently have vacancies for a cleaner and a midday supervisor. The rate
of pay is £7.43 per hour for both posts. Full DBS clearance will be required. If you know
anyone who might be interested please ask them to contact Mrs Enzor, our School Business
Manager, in the school office or on 01833 690298 for further information. Thank you.
CLASS COLLECTIVE WORSHIP: The children in Miss Southern’s’ class will be leading our
collective worship this Thursday, 11th February at 9.10 am, and parents of children in this
class are invited to join us. The next class leading collective worship will be Mrs Hartley’s
class on Thursday 3rd March.
SPARE TROUSERS: If you are able to let us have any boys’ trousers that your
child has grown out of and that we might be able to use as spares, we would be
very grateful. Just hand them in at the school office.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Please remember that all children should wait on
the yard until the bell goes for the start of the school day. If the weather is
inclement they may be able to come in earlier, but not until 8.45 am as there is
no one available to supervise them before then. The staff will be busy getting
ready for the school day. On such days it is best to judge your arrival time so that you and
your child are not standing in the playground getting wet before 8.45 am. And please avoid
the temptation to drop your child off at the front entrance!
MONKEY WEEK: In celebration of the Chinese New Year and
to support this term’s topic work, next week, week
commencing Monday 8th February is going to be “Monkey
Week” at Green Lane CE Primary School! We have a very busy
week ahead of us and most of the activities are listed in the
diary below. Please note that on Friday 12th February we are
having a non-uniform day when, if they wish, the children may
come dressed on an animal theme – perhaps in an animal
costume or an animal t-shirt.
YOUNG SAVERS CLUB: Tom
from Darlington Credit Union is here every Monday
morning in the school office at 9.00 am to receive the
cash that the children bring to pay in. They only need to
give 7 days’ notice if they want to withdraw any money. It
is not too late to join the Club – you can do so at any time,
just come along and see Tom on Monday morning.
-
COOL MILK: Did you know that children under five are
entitled to free milk? And if your child is over five you can

People love using Instagram for communicating with family and friends and many young people
also use it for learning and creative expression. When it comes to making good decisions
about photos online – whether it’s how to control your own or what do with other peoples –
children in the UK should be able to ask their parents for guidance. That’s why as parents,
you need to be well informed about the issues children face when they go online.
There are risks in using Instagram?
Although there isn’t anything inherently dangerous about
Instagram, the main things parents worry about are
typical of all social media: mean behaviour among peers
and inappropriate photos or videos that can hurt a child’s
reputation or attract the wrong kind of attention. There
is also a concern that strangers can contact children
directly.
Instagram has a minimum age!
Yes, it’s 13, which is similar to most other online services.
But, Instagram doesn’t ask users to specify their age, and
there are many younger children who use the service, often
without their parents’ permission.
Whether Instagram is “safe” depends more on how it’s used
than on the age of the user, but Instagram will delete
underage accounts if they’re notified and can verify that
the users are under 13.

Snapchat is a photo- and video-sharing app with a twist. The media you send disappear
seconds after they’re viewed—you get to decide how long a photo will “live,” from 1 to 10
seconds, after it’s viewed. Users love the spontaneity of that—it feels like socializing that’s
(digital) footprint-free—but, there are ways to capture and recover images, so no one should
develop a false sense of “security” about that.
There are risks in using Snapchat! Though there’s nothing inherently dangerous about Snapchat, it’s
often used to send inappropriate pictures. Snapchat can be used
for cyber bullying and harassment. It can be particularly hurtful
if that happens, because Snapchat is typically used among
friends (or atleast people who have each other’s username or
phone numbers).
Snapchat has a minimum age! Yes, the minimum age is 13, in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy
Protection Act. But, when you download it, Snapchat asks for your date of
birth, and—if your birth year tells it you’re under 13—you’re redirected to the
kid version, called “SnapKidz.” SnapKidz users can’t add friends or share
anything, and the app doesn’t send any information to the company. Instead,
kids’ photos and videos are saved just to their devices’ “camera roll.” If you’re
a kid, that means you can only play with the photos, etc. in SnapKidz on your
own device—not share them. So, children might look for work-arounds such as
sharing them with a different media-sharing tool on your phone, such as
texting, email, Facebook, etc. —or they might just delete Snapkidz and start
over with a fictitious birth date.
If you have any issues or would like further information – please
contact the school.
