Lower Than Atlantis BAND

Hailing from the London satellite town of Watford, Lower Than Atlantis were formed in 2007 by Mike Duce (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Ben Sansom (lead guitar, backing vocals), whose shared love of bands such as Biffy Clyro, NOFX, and blink-182 would go on to inspire the group’s early sound. Eight years and four studio albums later, the band has taken on a more alternative rock sound inspired by the likes of Foo Fighters and Jimmy Eat World, transitioning from hardcore punk to melodic indie rock. Their eponymous fourth studio album released last year, was called the best album of 2014 by Rock Sound editor Ryan Bird. Last month, a suped-up Black Edition of the album was released, with two new recordings including forthcoming single Get Over It, three tracks that originally featured on the limited deluxe CD, two BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge covers, four further brand new covers, and four alternative versions of album tracks recorded at Rockfield Studios during the album sessions.Ahead of their gig at the Academy this month, we caught up with lead singer Mike Duce to ask him those famous 10 questions...

Jay DROPDJ / PRODUCER

JayDrop aka Jay Jennings, is a Bristol based DJ/producer. From his early dubstep productions to his more recent 170 tunes, Jay has continually gained support from renowned artists across the spectrum. Early support for Jaydrop came from the dubstep / grime pioneer Plastician on his Rinse FM show. This was followed by the Dubstep Allstars compilation released on Tempa which featured two his tracks. 2014 saw an EP release on Swiss label Demand Records as Jay began to speed up his production tempo to 170. Further releases that year came on Alchemic Breaks as well as Skutta Records alongside Mystic State. These gained him support from the likes of Skeptical, Loxy, Icicle, Eastcolours, Youngsta and Om Unit, but it’s the support of Doc Scott which has seen him release his latest EP True Sound on Doc’s 31 Records label. The Bristol DJ and producer is now so in demand, he’ll be playing for legends Dusky and Swindle on the same night this month, running between Colston Hall and Motion on Dec 4. With the continued support from this latest EP, 2016 should be exciting for him.

INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT

SAFFRON RECORDS In this month’s local talent spotlight, Nitelife was delighted to chat to new all-girl record label, Saffron Records. The youth label launched in May this year and helps women between the ages of 16-24 get their foot in the door of an arguably still male dominated music industry.

Having spent years working within the music industry, Laura Lewis-Paul knows first hand some of the pitfalls of being a female, both from a music management perspective and also from talking with the female artists she was representing. There is also a startlingly low representation of women in the industry. So taking the issue into her own hands, Laura decided to create her own record label to provoke a change in Bristol. Enter Saffron Records.

After being welcomed very warmly by the Saffron girls in the Colston Hall foyer, I joined Laura and her two apprentices Emma Morsi and Naomi Harris in the lift as we went up to the next floor. Immediately I felt their warmth and excitement as they told me about the manic day they’d had surrounding the buzz of their launch. As they laughed and chatted away like old friends, you wouldn’t believe they had only been working together for a few weeks.

Once we had settled, I learnt that Saffron offer up three strands of work – apprenticeships, ‘getting signed’ and a schools programme. Naomi and Emma’s roles in Digital Marketing and A&R respectively are examples of what the apprenticeship scheme has to offer. The schools programme provides a “safe environment” for women to learn to DJ, MC or produce. “In electronic dance music there are really low statistics, as low as two percent of women involved in the industry. That’s the reason why we want to get young women involved.”

The main focus currently on Saffron’s agenda is the ‘signing’ aspect of the organisation. “Our campaign at the moment #SaffronSigns is all about finding young artists within the city and matching them up with industry mentors.” Laura went on to boast the great list of names they have lined up as mentors for the process, including patron Eva Lazarus, Beth Rowley, Sian Evans and Tanya Lacey.

“These are really key inspirational women to be working with,” Laura says.

Once the artists have been partnered up with their mentors, they are guaranteed recording time and support from gig promoters to help them work towards live events - the perfect package for any aspiring young female musician.

Despite their reasoning to support female musicians in Bristol, the Saffron team made it very clear they’re not a feminist group. “We work with males and use male mentors and there shouldn’t be any segregation,” says Laura. Saffron’s concern is more about the normalisation of women in the music industry. “It’s small things like not calling a DJ that is a woman a ‘female DJ’ and defining them by their gender, that’s what needs to change.”

But how did the idea of Saffron Records originally come about? Laura’s past experience working with Creative Network and Temple Records helped uncover the need for something like Saffron to appear in Bristol. “During that time we had quite a few women on board and we were going to Real World Studios and on lots of different field trips, but it quickly became apparent we were looking at a male dominated industry. I asked the girls at the time how they felt about going into the industry as it was. They were really positive about it and said at least they would get noticed, but that’s not what it should be about at all.”

Although Saffron Records launched just over six months ago, the support has been overwhelming for the label, especially from local partners Bristol Plays Music, Boomsatsuma and Future Boogie Management, but it doesn’t stop there. “Our partners across the city have been amazing, but we’ve also had a lot of support from people outside the partnerships too. Everyone has jumped straight on board and proven this was something much needed in our city.”

I had to admit to Laura that I was pretty gutted when I found out

Interview by Abi Lewissaffronrecords.co.uk#SaffronSigns

stay put. “I don’t ever really want to leave Saffron! I don’t mind what I do, I just want to be part of it. Not everyone gets an opportunity like this, especially if you come from a rubbish area or have a bad background, people sort of look over you. It’s nice to be accepted and in a building like Colston Hall. The people around you look at you as an adult and treat you with the same respect they’d treat anyone. It makes me feel part of a community.”

Just from talking with the three Saffron members for half an hour, I got a strong sense of the community Naomi was on about. Laura even welled up talking about her admiration for her apprentices. She said, “I thought the other day - oh my god if these girls leave me in a year’s time I’m actually going to be really upset!”

Talking about what’s next for the label, Naomi said, “We’ve got auditions on 13-14 December where we’ll hopefully find our first signing. We don’t have a set genre or type of person in mind - we like spoken word, DJing, bands, singers - it’s just about finding the right person we’d like to work with”.

And it seems as though the buzz around the event is booming. Emma continued, “Without any promotion we’ve already got 12 girls attending. Again, it just shows how much of a need for something like this there is in Bristol.”

Not only do Saffron Records have their first auditions to look forward to, but 2016 is going to be a very busy year too. With a collaborative EP launch set for spring and a trip to Palestine in August to conduct workshops for women, it’s a great start to a fantastic new label in Bristol.

If you’re interested in auditioning for Saffron Records this month, check out #SaffronSigns for more information.

I couldn’t get involved myself because of the age restriction. Laura laughed and said that more than a few people have had the same response. “My experience is very focused in youth work. It’s where my passion is and it’s where I identified the issue. But as I’m doing this I’m starting to realise there is a need for older women too. So we’ll start small and see where it goes.”

Digital marketing apprentice Emma said, “I feel we are involved with women of all ages in music in everything we do anyway. There’s not an exclusive cut off point. It’s about trying to build

and extend those partnerships beyond that age range and working collaboratively.”

It was great to see the Saffron Apprentices getting fully involved with the entire process, so I was curious to find out what both Naomi and Emma plan on taking away from their time with Saffron Records. Emma plans to take her experiences of editing and interviewing and apply it to her role as a freelance journalist with the long-term goal of becoming a magazine editor. A&R apprentice Naomi was quite happy to

ELROW ON THE ROAD: EL BRONX IN:MOTION, 5 DEC

Barcelona clubbing institution elrow bring the party to the UK for the first time ever this year, with a series of hedonistic parties, ‘elrow on the Road’, which will be winding up in Bristol this December as part of the In:Motion series.

A clubbing experience where spectacle, music, color and happiness are essential elements of the DNA, elrow is the brainchild of Spain’s infamous Arnau family, whose legacy over three generations includes Monegros Desert Festival and Florida 135.

Since its inception in 2010, elrow has already made a name as one of the best parties in Barcelona, Madrid and Ibiza (during their summer residencies at Space).

After huge successes in London, Leeds and Birmingham, elrow comes to Bristol for a special ‘el Bronx’ themed party, which promises to recreate the hustle and bustle of down town New York.

We want people to forget about real life and get lost in a kaleidoscopic world of colours, sound and laughter

Clubbers can expect confetti cannons, mountains of inflatables, troops of performers, dancer, stilt-walkers, and who knows what else.

In another unusual twist, the headline acts will remain a secret until they get on stage on the night. Although recent special guests include Jackmaster, Jasper James and Eats Everything, so expect not to be disappointed.

Jo Vidler, founder of Wildnerness Festival and one of the brilliant minds behind Secret Garden Party, is heading up the UK team responsible for bringing elrow to the UK.

Nitelife caught up with Jo to learn a bit more about El Bronx...

Can you tell us a bit about the UK elrow team and how you got involved with the Spanish institution? I was at Sónar festival in Barcelona last year for just 24 hours and Rag, director of Bristol In:Motion, kidnapped me to go and see Subb-an at elrow.

I was standing in the middle of the dancefloor, when to my left a very tall man in a boat appeared, then a big bear and a lady with giant teeth, all towering above me. Surrounded, I was dancing around laughing, the music dropped and suddenly I was covered in confetti. I couldn’t see anything but orange everywhere!

I was grinning from ear to ear and turned to Rag and said, ‘We must bring this to the UK immediately!’ He was thinking the exact same thing.

Rag introduced me to the elrow family and well, here we

lost in a kaleidoscopic world of colours, sound and laughter.

How do you go about choosing the acts to book for your events? We always bring over the elrow residents De La Swing, Marc Maya or Toni Varga, as they represent the true elrow sound and give the party the full Spanish flavour. Then when deciding on special guests we select acts who bring a sense of fun to the party with their music. These are always very renowned DJs and the surprise element adds to the suspense!

Special guests at previous UK elrow events include Jackmaster and Eats Everything. Can you give us any clues on who to expect at the Bristol event this December? We can’t tell you that! Cheeky...

What other surprises can party goers expect? It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you, but the elrow family always have plenty up their sleeves. Keep your eye out for them in the crowd and you never know what could be coming your way!

How is the ‘El Bronx’ theme going to come into play? Get your caps on and your chain key rings, you are entering El Bronx! Make sure you dress up - you won’t regret it.

are. We became one big family very quickly and now we are inviting everyone in the UK to do the same.

Why have elrow decided to bring parties to locations outside of Spain and Ibiza, including the UK? They want to share elrow with the world... who wouldn’t want to go?

Having already hosted parties in America, South America, France, Belgium and Italy, coming to the UK made complete sense. Few places love parties as much as us Brits, and elrow pushes partying to the next level.

How were elrow parties born? elrow is the brainchild of the Arnau Family, a company that has moved through generations and has been in the entertainment industry since 1970 with different projects in operation.

elrow is a Barcelona born brand that started as night club and mutated into a day-time party. It was at that point that elrow became what it is today - anything can happen and the crowd are the always the headliners!

If elrow had a mission statement, what would it be? FUN, FUN, FUN!

What’s different about an elrow party? This party has energy like no other... anything goes. We spend as much time as possible building sets, decor and dressing the venue to create a completely immersive experience. We want people to walk through the doors, forget about real life and get

PATRICK NAZEMI

Patrick NazemiAge: 27 Job title: DJ and promoter

Photography by Martin Thompsonfb.com/Thefacecollective Interview by Rachel Morris22 Dec, Brooklyn Zoo Christmas Shutdown @ Motionfb.com/[email protected]

LA born, Bristol raised and now international DJ and promoter, Patrick Namezi has made his mark behind the scenes as well as on stage. Starting out as a flyer boy for Ramshackle and Propaganda, he now spends his summers in Ibiza and the rest of the year flying between Bristol and the rest of the world, touring as a DJ and promoting his own club nights.

He’s played a big part in shaping some of Bristol’s biggest nights over the past decade. After being promoted from flyering, Patrick worked his way up to become brand manager and booker for the always-packed weekly Ramshackle events, transitioning it from an indie club night hosting 600 people a week into a fully-fledged dance music event which now regularly sees over 2,000 people through its doors.

Patrick holds regular residencies across multiple genres, including house, bass, hip hop and indie, as well as warming up for some of the biggest names around. He’s shared the stage with Rudimental, Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson and Hannah Wants, to name a few, and Radio 1’s Zane Lowe has said that Patrick is “fast becoming a liability to have to follow on the decks.”

Catch him in Bristol this December, when his old school hip hop night Brooklyn Zoo takes over Motion for a Christmas special on 22 December.

Until then, groupies can hit him up on a specially designated email address which can be found on his website…

We’ll start with the obvious question - how did you get into DJing?I started flyering for the Ramshackle and Propaganda club nights when I was 18, whilst working a full-time job at St Nicks Market and two other part-time bar jobs. I flyered for the club nights for almost two years before they offered me a full-time position promoting the nights. Once I had the job, I just bothered DJ Dan (Propaganda’s founder) to teach me how to DJ. He taught me the two most important lessons for live DJing: read the crowd and play the right tune next. From there, I taught myself the rest.

You DJ and hold residencies at a lot of very different nights playing very different styles of music. You must have a favourite?I’m super lucky to have residencies that let me explore and play most genres from hip hop to house, to DnB, to grime, to party, and everything in between. I genuinely don’t have one single favourite genre, but the majority of music I listen to outside of playing or planning my sets is classical influenced, jazz or instrumentals. It helps me switch off!

You’ve shared the stage with some pretty huge names as well. Who has been the biggest coup?Mumford & Sons curated these amazing mini-festivals called Gentlemen of the Road and asked me on tour with them this summer to play some of them. They put me on straight after

they’d finished headlining which meant I ended up pressing play on a beautiful beach in New Jersey to 25,000 people! That was an experience I’ll remember for a while.

And the Snoop Dogg supports this year and last year were also pretty dope. Sorry I gave you two answers.

Zane Lowe said you’re a hard act to follow. Who would you hate to have to follow on stage?Jazzy Jeff. He’s every DJ’s favourite DJ, plays with such effortless skill in a laid back style that I admire, and has a collection that would make every DJ I know envious.

What do you think makes a good DJ?Ability to read a crowd plus a broad selection of music to route from and absolutely no fear to take chances and make people turn they heads.

How did you get involved with Ibiza Rocks and why do they love you so much?I remember going to Ibiza Rocks back in late 00’s and thinking to myself that I wanted to be on that stage. Then in 2012 I won a DJ competition for a residency at their bar on the beach. After a few good gigs at the bar, they wanted me on board to play their boat parties and then finally last year I got offered the position of head resident! It’s been good fun slowly proving myself as a DJ for the Rocks brand and while I don’t know why they love me so much, I’m very glad they do! The Rocks crew are like family now.

Can you tell us a bit more about your night, Brooklyn Zoo?Brooklyn Zoo’s a hip hop night I started in Bristol two years ago through the sheer love of old school hip hop. Lots of my mates were asking if I knew of any parties like it in the city and there didn’t seem to be one that stood out, so I put one on at Thekla.

Now we’re throwing parties in Ibiza, The Alps, Cardiff, Bath, Oxford, Southampton and Brighton - whilst here in Bristol we’ve sold out Thekla, Fleece and Lakota and are now moving in to Motion for a Christmas Shutdown across all three rooms. Mad!

Have you thought about producing? To really conquer production properly I’d have to spend a good year in a studio making mistakes, which I just don’t have the time to do. Right now I’m trying to make my stamp as being the best resident DJ in the country - production can wait for now!

Can you describe a typical working day for you?11am: Wake up and complain that I missed the hotel breakfast. 12pm: Check out, get breakfast somewhere else, reply to

emails and check all socials for my club nights and DJ bookings, and make a move to a train station or airport. 1pm-6pm: Travel to the next city, check some new music, build my music collection some more and make edits of tracks for that night’s DJ set. 6pm: Check in to hotel. 8pm: Get lunch. 11pm: Get to venue. 3am: finish playing. 4am: dinner. 6am: bed.

What’s the best thing about your job?I get to wake up every morning and want to go to ‘work’.

And what are the drawbacks?Constantly being in clubs and venues until the sun comes up, taking daily flights and trains and living out of a bag takes its toll on you physically and mentally, especially as I manage all my brands and bookings - but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

For those wanting to make a career in DJing, can you impart any wisdom or words of advice you wish you had been given when you were starting out?Play as often as you can (5+ nights a week) and vary your genres as much as you can. The sheer volume of 5+ gigs every week will help build your technical ability as well as your following. The variance in genres will help build your musical vocabulary. The wider vocabulary you have, the better you can speak - and DJing is all about speaking to your crowd through music.

Finally, what exciting plans have you got in the pipeline?I’m touring the UK and France, including Rise Festival in the Alps in December, then off to Australia for shows from NYE for a month.

February will be some more UK shows, March is SXSW Festival in the States then hopefully some Canadian dates, April I’m working on getting to Hong Kong for the month and then we hit May and the lead up to my fifth Ibiza season kicks in. Who knows what else will get booked in on top of all that between now and next May - I ain’t sleeping though that’s for sure
