asking if he wanted to jam and we started writing music a week later.

Can you tell us about your subscription service, Kate’s Mysterious Monthly Musical Parcels?I wanted to find a way to keep sharing my music and thoughts with the people who supported me after I’d finished with YouTube. I’m writing songs all the time, so I figured it’d be easier to send these songs in a mailing list to the select few who wanted to follow and support my career. People can be so generous - and it helps me so much financially. I feel very lucky!

You’ve said your new title track from Paraffin was written about your ex-boyfriend who went travelling for 6 months. Are all of your songs about such personal experiences? Our songs vary quite a bit when it comes to meanings. We always write about things that have had a significant effect on us. Whether that’s music or stories in the news, ultimately, we want to connect with people. So it makes sense for us to write about the things that have connected with us.

MEADOWLARK

Local alt-pop duo Meadowlark have had an incredible run since forming four years ago, after old friends Kate McGill and Dan Broadley met up for a jam.

At the time, Kate was an internet superstar who was known mainly for her covers of other artists’ songs on YouTube, especially her stripped-back version of Adele’s Someone Like You. Kate had racked up over 30 million views on her channel, making her the 13th most subscribed-to musician on YouTube.

But wanting to pursue a music career based on her own material, Kate publicly said goodbye to her YouTube fans and ended her five-year stint as a covers star.

At the same time, Dan had grown tired of playing in the rock band he was in and was also looking for a new project. Kate reached out to him and within a week they were writing music together as Meadowlark.

They’ve just released their third EP Paraffin on Believe Records and have been announced at multi-venue festival Dot-to-Dot in Bristol this month.

Nitelife met up with the pair in Bristol to grab some mugshots and talk about Meadowlark’s rapid ascension…

Kate, you found fame on YouTube in your teens performing cover songs before packing it in to make a name as an original artist. Four years on, do you think you made the right decision? 100%. I’m a big believer in following your gut instinct - it’s only ever made me happier. Dan and I get on so well and we love writing music together. I feel inspired and motivated all the time in Meadowlark - I didn’t feel like that at all as a solo artist. Plus, it’s so much more fun when you’re travelling around with your friend!

How did you and Dan come together to form Meadowlark?Dan came up to Bristol to see a The Tallest Man on Earth gig and popped around mine beforehand to catch up. We were chatting about music and I mentioned that I was looking to get out of the solo stuff and into a more collaborative project. He was in a rock band at the time and had had enough of that scene. I text him that night

that surrounds our music. It’s something we enjoy and something we will always have some kind of hand in.

How did you feel about being asked to play Dot-to-Dot festival? Really excited. It’s such a prestigious festival and the line up looks incredible this year. It’s one of those festivals that you can’t wait to tell everyone you’re playing.

For those with Dot-to-Dot tickets, why should they stop in and check out your set? We are working really hard at the moment to bring some really interesting elements into our live set up to create a more immersive audio and visual experience for the audience. We can’t wait to show everyone at Dot-to-Dot!

and you really feel encouraged just by living in and amongst it!

What’s been your most memorable gig as Meadowlark? This is a hard question; we’ve done so many that we’ve loved for different reasons. I think it would have to be Glastonbury though, it was such a surreal experience to be on stage and say to the audience, “Hello Glastonbury”. We also got the opportunity thanks to the local guys at BBC Introducing Bristol, so there was a real sense of city pride rolled into it.

You’ve been pretty busy, with two EP releases in just over a year – is there an album on the way? An album is definitely on the cards. We’ve written and recorded a full length album’s worth of songs and will be releasing it bit by bit as the year goes on.

You’ve been pretty involved in every element of most of your music videos. Why do you like to keep creative control over these?Coming from a very DIY background it feels natural to be involved in all elements of the creative process

Paraffin is hugely different to your first EP and has almost entirely lost that ‘folksy’ label you were often given starting out. Is this a deliberate shift or has it happened naturally?Very naturally. We actually started out more in the realm of where we are now, but ended up pursuing the folky route because the songs really did lend themselves to that genre. I think bands can restrict themselves too much with the boundaries of genre, but we always strive to never limit ourselves like that. We just write and pursue the genre that the song decides it wants to be.

How would you describe your sound today?Melancholy alt-pop is what we seem to get a lot and we are happy to go with it. I wish we could have ‘decide for yourself ’ as our genre.

Has being in a city like Bristol – with such an important musical heritage and strong musical output - influenced your music?Bristol has influenced to no end. There’s a lot of scrutiny when you pursue art as a career in any sense but Bristol is art - the city is full of character and colour

LOVE SAVES THE DAY, 28-29 MAY RONI SIZE & KRUST

Kicking off the festival season, Love Saves the Day returns to Eastville Park this month over the spring bank holiday weekend - and we can’t wait.

Since launching in 2012 as a one-dayer, it’s quickly grown to become one of our favourite festivals, getting bigger and better year on year.

As well as bringing in huge international acts like Dizzee Rascal, Stormzy, Katy B, The Martinez Brothers, and Shy FX; the born-and-bred Bristol festival continues to stick to its roots with a discernable leaning toward homegrown talent on the bill.

Luckily, that’s easy to do well in Bristol with the huge pool of talent the city has on offer. Headlining the new and very welcome addition, the Arcadia Afterburner stage, are the legends themselves, originators of the much-loved ‘Bristol sound’, Roni Size and Krust with their newly resurrected Full Cycle Records.

Roni and Krust surprised us all at the beginning of the year when they announced they would be working together

again after 12 years to bring the influential Full Cycle Records back from retirement. We had a chat with them both about the label’s ‘second coming’...

“It’s an exciting time for music at the moment,” says Krust. “There’s lots of new artists coming through and music has become good again. I’d been in the studio experimenting anyway and when the opportunity came to do it again, I thought, why not? It felt like unfinished business as well.

“Bristol has such a rich history of art, music and culture and we were fortunate to be part of that when it first came around. 20 years later and jungle is still a dominant force in the landscape. Every other artist is trying to get a jungle

beat now. Which is amazing when you think about all the other music that has come and gone.

“I think we’re at the beginning of what’s emerging next. There is definitely something going on and people are doing new things. I’m amazed at the level of new music that has been sent in to us since we restarted Full Cycle.”

The last time Nitelife spoke to Roni Size, exactly one year ago, we were sitting in his recording studio listening to a sneak preview of the forthcoming Reprazent album. But with the return of Full Cycle, the release has been put on hold, but Roni explains that it’s all for a very good reason.

“Last year was a focus on Reprazent and it was such an overwhelming response. Along the way we met a lot of supporters who begged the question, would we bring back Full Cycle?

“So there was a demand for that sound and we felt like there was space within the scene. The fans wanted it and it was a great way to rekindle friendships and work again with like-minded people. It’s the second coming!

I think we’re at the beginning of what’s emerging next.

“The new Reprazent album is still a working progress. We’ve got the opportunity to make a really strong record and now all this music to sit around the perimeter – Full Cycle and Reprazent on the same bill!

“The Reprazent album will definitely be out this year – we’re just polishing it off. And I think people enjoy that there is some substance to this, we’re playing the long game!”

In March this year, Roni and Krust released their Formulate EP on the newly reformed Full Cycle – their first collaborative work in over a decade. And while we can expect more new music from the masters, they’re looking forward to introducing the next generation of Dies, Suvs and D Products...

“It’s the new breed, so to speak,” says Roni. “We’re looking forward to working with younger people. We’ve had so many demos from so many people.”

While they haven’t officially signed any new artists yet, Krust has suggested that there are a few they’ve got their eye on for the label. “We’ve been road testing in our Full

Cycle shows and there are definitely a couple of people we want to sit down with,” he says.

Old fans of the label will be pleased to hear that they also plan on making the whole Full Cycle back catalogue, including unreleased tracks and remixes, available digitally.

“There’s a big demand for it,” says Roni. “ We’re going to be releasing a few new tunes, with a remix of a tune from back in the day, for example.”

Talking about their set at Love Saves the Day this month, where they’ll be joined on stage by original Full Cycle frontman, Dynamite MC; Krust and Roni both say they’re looking forward to bringing Full Cycle home.

“Your hometown is where you want everyone to come see you and support you,” says Krust. “And to be on that bill – it’s a great look for us. We feel honoured to be on the line up.”

“Playing at home is a big deal,” says Roni. “There’s people you know from days! But playing down at Motion or Stokes Croft is a big deal, the fact we are still doing it is a big deal.

“Last year, playing with Reprazent on the main stage at Love Saves the Day is a really good memory for me,” says Roni. “Being added to the line up last minute and having my mum sitting in the wings. She’s 79 on Sunday – you don’t mess around with that! She’s still here and still loving the music.

“There’s a genuine resurrection going on here. We’re looking to reclaim those tents we once held the marquee for and invite other DJs to come participate in a Full Cycle party.”

Bristol-based production team Love of Dub are recognised for bringing some of the finest dub and reggae to Bristol, including their particularly famous sell-out Valentine’s Day events, featuring the likes of Soom T, Dubkasm, and RSD to name a few.

The Love of Dub team have set out to deliver another unforgettable event this May, with their fundraising night at Bristol’s Trinity Centre for local anti-poverty charity, Matthew Tree Project and Full Reach, a charity fundraising to set up a new children’s home in Bristol.

To secure a sell-out fundraiser, Love of Dub have pulled together a heavyweight line-up, featuring reggae singer Hollie Cook and her go-to band General Roots, plus MCs YT and Solo Banton, alongside independent collective Roots Factory, London-based soundsystem Unit 137, with added Brazilian Maracatu drumming from Afon Sistema to top off the night. There will also be a ‘secret’ after party with special guests at an undisclosed location until 6am.

Nitelife had a chat with headlining act Hollie Cook in the run up to the Love of Dub event, to talk about her musical upbringing, her experience working with punk rock girl group The Slits and how she became the reggae performer we know and love today.

Hollie Cook is often recognised for her soft vocals in the sun-kissed single Milk and Honey, taken from her 2011 self-titled debut, along with the 2014 follow up album Twice, both produced by Prince Fatty.

“I think I started singing in the womb! My parents said it was quite apparent from a young age I was going to get into music, because I sang an annoying amount when I was a kid. My interests always leaned towards music and performing in general, with ballet, drama and all the precocious kids’ stuff, but as I got older I began to take it all more seriously.

“When I was in my teens I met a group of like-minded people at school and we started a band. I didn’t do too well at school, so as soon as I could leave, I did and continued making music and doing what I enjoyed.”

With musical parents like the idolised Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook and Culture Club backing singer Jeni Cook, it’s no wonder Hollie’s passion for music began at such a young age.

as a performer, including opening for The Stone Roses for their 2012 comeback tour.

“Opening for The Stone Roses a couple of years ago was like the biggest gig of the year in the world and it was just a bit mad. That was almost too weird for me to get my head around it at any point.

“I always find everything is a big moment for me though. Stepping out on stage every time and there actually being people there is a big moment. Every time it happens I just think, wow.”

With a promise of a new album on the horizon, Hollie Cook will kick off her summer tour of festivals starting with Bristol’s Love of Dub event this May.

“Music was just what I was surrounded by and what I have in common with the rest of the family. I think their high hopes of having a successful lawyer for a daughter were very much pushed to one side after a few years of getting to know me.

“Going into music isn’t really a secure kind of ambition in the sense that it’s an uncertain type of work, but at least my family could totally relate to where I was coming from and supported me and offered decent advice, so I was very lucky for that.”

Before becoming one of the UK’s current favourite reggae singers, Hollie was invited to become part of the legendary punk rock band The Slits, to embark on one of the most influential periods of her musical career so far.

“I knew The Slits and frontwoman Ari Up from a very young age through my parents, and one time when I was about nineteen she showed up saying she was recording new Slits material. She wanted to have a bunch of young girls singing on this particular song, so she was calling up all of her friends trying to round up all of their daughters! She always had a very strong idea of what she wanted to do.”

“So I literally came in to record my vocals not thinking anything of it, but Ari approached me after and said ‘oh you should come and sing with us when we play live’. I just thought she was being polite, but a year later I was going to their rehearsals. I didn’t really know what I was doing at the beginning, so I just completely went along with it. Next thing I know I was performing with them for the next four years or so.”

“The whole thing was totally unexpected for both myself and my dad. I never really planned on ever being in a punk band, especially a band that were peers and long-time friends of my dad’s band back in the 70s.”

After a four-year journey of touring with The Slits, it was the inspiration of working with such an empowering group of women and the tragic loss of frontwoman Ari Up that drove Hollie to pursue her solo career.

“I had gained so much experience and confidence performing with The Slits. It was the ultimate learning curve being surrounded by really strong women. I was only nineteen when it all happened which is a really weird time to be a girl anyway, so it was very cool to be empowered and feel like I could do it on my own.

“I had already started working on my own stuff as well as being in The Slits, but when Ari passed away, I felt there was nothing else I could’ve been able to do at that time. I would have lost my mind so I threw myself into an album and that sort of kept me occupied. I just had Ari in the back of my mind the whole time and that’s what powered me on.”

Hollie landed on our radars as a solo performer in 2011, with her self-titled debut album featuring French producer Prince Fatty, who she has continued to collaborate with since.

“At the time, Fatty was working on his first album and he gave my friend a copy whilst it was still in the works. It was right around the time when I was looking for people to collaborate with so checked it out and I loved it. At that point most of his stuff was instrumentals, so I didn’t know what he was planning.

“I got in touch with him and introduced myself saying that if he was on the lookout for any singers then I’d like to do some work with him, and he was really cool about it. He’d never heard me sing before but he was really welcoming and invited me down to his studio. I said I had this song lying around for a while called Milk and Honey, so we tried it and it worked out really nicely. After that we just carried on!

“He lives in Brighton so I just kept going down to Brighton every now and again and recorded a load of songs and soon, without realising it, we had managed to get half an album’s worth of stuff together. It was quite nice the way it happened. We were doing it because we loved it and without any real plan, and then it turned into an album.”

This month we catch up with events coordinator and sonic artist, Jamell Ackford who helps put together the eclectic music and events programme at the amazing Trinity Centre, who are celebrating 40 years of music this year.

What does your role at Trinity Centre involve?I liaise with club and live gig promoters and coordinate general hires like meetings and conferences. I also deal with the tech side of things – if it’s a community event we will set up the PA and AV equipment. Plus, we have a small team that curate our in-house events, such as our annual Garden Party and Fireworks Night. I design a lot of the artwork for flyers and ads, create contacts on the club scene but also re-establish past connections with acts such as Smith and Mighty.

How did you end up at Trinity Centre? I moved from London to Plymouth when I was young, then studied Fine Art at Plymouth College of Art before I came to Bristol. I did the usual experimenting with all mediums before I found sonic art. I loved creating installations with audio elements and moved on to performing my work for a short while. I liked to record everyday sounds, then splice these to create a track. While I was doing this I was working an unfulfilling job in a supermarket, but I got placed on the music and film section - I like to keep it all relevant, you know! Once my studies were completed I did the whole travelling experience and recorded sounds wherever I went. Once I came back, my twin brother and a few friends were moving to Bristol and that seemed to be the way forward. I love and miss the seaside life, but I needed more - more creativity and opportunity. I refused to do the same old jobs so signed on and started looking for creative work. It’s such a hard area to get into but one day I drove past this wicked looking building and wanted to know more. Trinity had a few 6-month contracts going with the Job Centre so I applied for the facilities role that was up for grabs. I ended up getting the events assistant role, made a groove for myself and now they can’t get rid of me!

Can you describe a typical day at the office?One of my new colleagues describes our office as ‘creative chaos’ and I completely agree. There are endless ideas flowing, some are crazy and some are not, but most are ideas that can be worked upon to expand our programme of events. But a typical day is pretty much a load of emails, lots of music, throwing ideas around and setting up for events that are about to take place.

How does a show night look for you?A show night looks quite relaxed at the start of the day. It’s usually almost too calm. We will most likely have theatre rehearsals in our upstairs space or an exhibition prepping for their opening show. Things usually start to take shape in the

afternoon with the sound and lighting crew loading in. If it’s a club night there’s more of a transformation of the hall, which is always exciting to see. Once the tour bus turns up I find a lot of the artists want to know about the history and who’s played in the past. I feel proud about the building and how far it’s come so I’m always happy to have a chat about it.

The remainder of the run up to the show can be challenging, because as we are getting ready for a gig or club event, we still remain open as a community centre. You may get fans swinging by trying to get a glimpse of the band, as well as music students coming in to record in the studio upstairs. But I love the unpredictable nature of Trinity.

What makes Trinity Centre special as a music venue?For me, Trinity is an amazing bit of history for the city. It’s our 40th year of music and that’s an amazing accomplishment for a venue. It’s a unique experience walking up to a big church, excited to see your favourite band or dance all night to your favourite selectas. All that energy is contained in one hall.

We are very lucky to have had so many iconic artists pass though our doors, Gorillaz, Prodigy, Eek a Mouse, Massive Attack, Public Enemy and Duran Duran, and we continue to get these little gems every year. Soundsystem culture is a massive part of the heritage of the venue. Trinity was passed to the African-Caribbean Community Association in the 70s where many a dance took place. This culture is still thriving; I’m trying to think of a sound system that hasn’t passed through Trinity…

Has there been a standout moment for you during your time at Trinity?BBC 6 Music Festival was great to be part of. I’m not usually affected or star struck by artists coming through the doors, but we had the mighty Saul Williams come and perform on the Saturday morning of the 6 Music Festival and I was blessed enough to meet and chat with him. When I was younger it was him who got me into reading - his spoken word work is out of this world. This man speaks so much power! The only other person that would make me star struck would be David Attenborough.

What’s been your personal career highlight? My personal highlight is working on The Garden Party. Of course, this was going before I joined Trinity, but the event has grown and developed each year. Last year was the biggest yet - we booked the big bad Ishan Sound ft Ossia and Rider Shafique was headlining. We saw over 5000 people through our gates and this year’s is set to be even bigger.

What’s the best thing about your job?My favourite thing about my job is that I have the freedom to create. We are a multi-use venue and have a team of talented individuals that take on and greet opportunities that come our way.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?I hope to be putting together more in-house events and expanding on the reputation Trinity has built up over the years. Home and work life can be so busy, so I’m just excited about what we are currently working on.

What have you got coming up at Trinity that you’re most excited about? The Garden Party, coming up on the 8th of May, with a great line up of local artists like Lionpulse, Rattle, Yama Warashi, The Evil Usses, Bodywork DJs, Luui, Many Monika, plus theatre shows and an installation by Jimmy Cauty ‘The ADP Riot’, which was shown at Banksy’s Dismaland.

And on the 30th of September we have a Trinity takeover, collaborating with the Bandulu Gang presenting Sureskank 10 Years Strong. I can’t tell you much yet but this will be a massive show.

What advice would you have for anyone wanting to get into a similar role?

Either be stubborn and just keep ploughing on until you get something you love doing, or just try and get some experience within events. Events and venues are plentiful in Bristol, which opens up more opportunities to get involved. I think volunteering is a great thing to do if you have some spare time. If you mix the passion you have with a little experience, then you’re on your way…

THOSE QUESTIONS...THOSE QUESTIONS...1. What have you learned today?Axl Rose is gonna be the new singer for AC/DC… Interesting.

2. Favourite track of all time? Far too hard to say... Although the recent passing of the legend that is David Bowie made me realise just how much of an influence he had on my life both musically and generally. Hunky Dory was one of the first records I bought. So on that note, definitely as one of my favourites, I’m going to say Life On Mars? The strings get me every time.

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Hank Ballard - From The Love Side. So funky! If that don’t get people up, I don’t know what will!

4. Who are your top 3 acts right now? Well I can say what I’m listening to currently: I was introduced to a band called Khruangbin the other day, and have been listening to their album The Universe Smiles Upon You a lot lately. Really nice chilled vibes. Also, Akua Naru - The World Is Listening, and Michael Kiwanuka - ‘I’m a Black Man In a White World’… Big fan of his music.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I think I would go into art. I’ve always loved to do it, but don’t really have as much time for it anymore. It’s another expressional outlet! I actually created the artwork for our soon to be out What You See EP, and had a lot of fun doing it!

6. What was the last book you read? The last book I read was 1984 by George Orwell, bit of a classic isn’t it? Scarily accurate too!

7. Favourite thing on TV? I actually don’t watch TV, so couldn’t really give an answer on this. Actually, only ever when there’s a Leicester City football game on. We’re top of the league, y’know!

8. Are you afraid of anything? I can’t handle small spaces and I’m not massively keen on spiders, but I’m working on that one!

9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I find it very hard to go a day without eating humous…. It’s an addiction!

10.) What are you doing tomorrow? Drinking lots of coffee, running, teaching a guitar lesson and rehearsing getting ready for our What You See May tour. Bring it on!

1. What have you learned today?It is not lucky when a bird poops on you - it’s gross, upsetting and for a some reason, a little bit funny, but mainly the first two things.

2. Favourite track of all time? Arghhhhh whyyyyyy are you asking me that like that’s an easy thing to answer? God, I don’t know! Something by a Lauryn Hill or Erykah Badu, but don’t make me choose one track, it’s giving me heart palpitations.

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again?Charly Black & J Capri - Whine & Kotch (if it hasn’t been played and pulled up 1000 times already).

4. Who are your top 3 acts right now? Hiatus Kaiyote , Anderson Paak and Kiko Bun.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I’d still be doing something creative - I love making clothes and drawing. If not that, maybe working in PR or marketing for a creative industry. Something I could be passionate about.

6. What was the last book you read? Not that Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham

7. Favourite thing on TV?I just binge watched the new season of Trailer Park Boys. I’m alternating between Ru Paul’s Drag Race, Girls, and Broad City at the moment. Oooh, Game of Thrones is on soon! Yusssssss!

8. Are you afraid of anything?The dust that comes off of moths.... What is it? Pretty sure it’s made of poison.

9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... Once a friend of mine told me that he thought haloumi tasted like a used prophylactic and it kinda ruined my experience of that particular cheese.

10. What are you doing tomorrow? Playing guitar, writing and recording new music at home. Oh and cutting out a dress from a pattern I bought the other day, I got some amazing fabric from Brixton market and I want to wear something new for my gig on Saturday!

Local reggae, drum and bass, and soul darling Eva Lazarus is quickly becoming one of the most recognisable faces on the Bristol music scene. We got to know Eva first as Dub Mafia’s effervescent front woman and then through collaborations with the likes of Stanton Warriors, Etherwood, Dub FX, Mr Woodnote, Danny Byrd, Jus now, Gotsome, Dr Syntax and Pete Cannon and Serocee. But now it’s her solo career that looks set to take off in a big way.She released her first mixtape ‘Konichi Wah Gwan’ last year, which showcases what she’s been up to collaboration-wise (listen free on her soundcloud page: soundcloud.com/evalazarus, but her solo work is building traction too, with a debut solo EP in the works, featuring contributions from DJ Die, Show n Prove, Rymez and Brad Baloo (Nextmen).
