Can you tell us a bit of the history behind The Zen Hussies? We formed in the year 2000 in the Hat and Feather in Bath at the open mic sessions, where Hat and Feather has now sadly turned into a wanky steak house. We started out quite formally as a little three piece and expanded quickly into having a brass section, to the point where now about twenty or so different musicians have played with us at one time or another, and now we’ve settled on the regular six people that are in the band now.

How would you describe your music to anyone who hasn’t heard you? It’s hard to do so without sounding pretentious! I guess it’s kind of tongue-in-cheek, swing, jazz, rhythm and blues, ska, original music, good-for-dancing and quite funny lyrics.

What place do you think Jazz and Swing has in Bristol?

I think it’s much healthier now than it was probably ten years ago. There seems to be a lot of young people playing jazz now, more so than there were a while ago. And now with Bristol having its own International Jazz and Blues festival I think that can only get better.

There are of course loads of venues, which is always useful. And there are plans via the jazz festival to twin Bristol officially with New Orleans (the birthplace of jazz), which if that happens would be amazing. So I think on that front things are looking pretty good really. I don’t think Jazz will ever be as mainstream as it was in the 30s, 40s and 50s, but it’s always going to be there I think.

One thing Bristol is good at is music. Historically, Bristol musicians have always been top of their game across a multitude of different genres. And while the city has earned itself a reputation as the UK’s Bass Capital, there exists a strong undercurrent of jazz, swing, and rhythm and blues; with Bristol’s own Jazz and Blues festival launching last year. This has meant that loads of brilliant jazz-based acts are coming out of the city all the time. Topping that bill are The Zen Hussies, with their own brand of swinging stomp, jazz, blues and ska, topped off with a healthy dose of humour and wit.

Eminent in Bristol for fourteen years, The Zen Hussies are renowned for putting on a great show. We challenge you to go to one of their gigs and not find yourself bopping wildly, drawing into your diaries your next booze up with the group. Luckily, they’re patrons of the city and they’re usually found not far from a decent watering hole with a welcoming stage (catch them this month at The Thunderbolt on 20th June).

While you’re likely to hear a couple of popular covers like ‘King of the Swingers’, the majority set is their own material combining an original mix of Jump Jive, Swing and Dixieland Jazz, Ska, Rhythm and Blues and Gypsy Klezmer to name but a few, with three full length EPs under their belt.

We caught up with front-man Jonah Flatfoot (AKA Jules Landau), the lead vocalist and the only original member of the Zen Hussies, which over the past fourteen years have welcomed twenty or so different members. However, the current line up, with the addition of a new(ish) drummer, have been playing together for 7 years and things looks set to stay that way, with their current line-up being stronger than ever.

The Zen Hussies are: Jules Landau (Lead vocals, guitar, clarinets, harmonica), Charlotte Ostafew AKA ‘Cha Cha Gabore’ (baritone sax, vocals), Jonny ‘Split Lip’ Bruce (trumpet, vocals), Tom ‘Rocket Pants’ Allen (double bass, vocals), Sebastian Gutiez AKA ‘Count Sebski Velo’ (guitar, vocals) and Rhii Williams (drums and percussion)

A lot of people think of jazz acts as paying homage to the old-fashioned. Would you say this is true or is it something that’s still current, or on it’s way back up even?I think there’s definitely a nostalgia attached to it because it has got so much history. I mean jazz is a loaded word because there are so many different types of it. From sort of 20s stuff to really out there noodly stuff. For me personally, jazz is only really jazz if it’s rooted in the blues and once it’s no longer rooted in the blues, it’s something else; it’s not really jazz any more.

I think there’s nothing wrong with people feeling nostalgic about it and keeping the music alive, but it’s also good to try and inject it with something from today as well, without necessarily going down the road of electro swing - which, personally, I’m not very fond of.

What we try to do is write music in the spirit of that era, without necessarily conforming to just playing cover versions of what’s already been done, but to try and capture the spirit of it in a modern way.

Having seen you live many times, I can vouch that you put on a good show. Where do your performances get their energy?I guess like most performers would say, it’s kind of a release from the mundane boringness of everyday life. And once you’re on stage you can, not necessarily become a different person, but you’ve got a license to reveal sides of your personality that if you did so in every day life you’d probably get sectioned for!

And we have also in the past been awarded the title of ‘South West’s Most Exclusive Drinking Club’, so perhaps that has something to do with the energy that goes into our performances. As long as we’re not too drunk during the set, but afterwards...

And how do you all fit together? In terms of writing and putting your music together...It happens all sorts of different way really. Sometimes I’ll have a pretty much complete song that I’ve written myself on guitar with words and versus and choruses and then I’ll take it to the band and they’ll arrange brass lines and hooks and that sort of thing. And then other times it’ll work that someone in the band has got an idea for a piece of music and they’ll arrange it and I’ll come in and write some words, quite often in the rehearsal room itself, that go with the spirit of the piece of music as I see it. And sometimes it will change over time and get re-written, sometimes things will resurface after years and we’ll finish a song after we started it five years earlier; and sometimes it will happen really quickly and you’ve written a song in twenty minutes.

What have you got lined up for the summer and where can we find you?

The next Bristol gig you can find us at is on 20th June at the The Thunderbolt. We’re going to France for most of July gigging at lots of little of festivals out there. And we’re hopefully going to the Island of Sark in the Channel Islands for the folk festival over there which will be a strange and beautiful experience I imagine. We’re playing at Iford Manor Festival on the Glastonbury weekend, which we’re headlining on the Saturday night. We might yet find a way into Glastonbury - we played there last year. And gigs are coming in all the time (keep up to date with upcoming gigs on their facebook page: fb.com/zenhussies).

And what are your long term plans for The Zen Hussies?

At the moment we’ve got about six new songs that aren’t on any recordings. We’ve been writing some more stuff in rehearsals, so at the end of the year, once festival season is out of the way, we’ll start work on the new album which will hopefully be out at the beginning of next year.

Any thing else you want to tell our readers?

Please don’t vote Tory in the next election (laughs) ...Or UKIP! And just that if anyone out there is starting a band or trying to get into music - keep on doing it. And do it for the fun, ‘cause the money can be rubbish but the times are brilliant!

The Zen hussies have created their own brand of swinging stomp, jazz, blues and ska, topped off with a healthy dose of humour and wit.
