THOSE QUESTIONS...THOSE QUESTIONS...1) What have you learned today?Cat’s penises are barbed.

2) Favourite track of all time?Impossible to say but the one with the most impact was ‘Welcome to the Terrordome’ by Public Enemy.

3) It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? ‘Love Come Down’ by Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King.

4) Who are your top 3 producers/DJs right now?Knxwledge, Pitch and Pete Cannon.

5) If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Some sort of dull back-office administrative role. Thanks hip hop!

6) What was the last book you read?‘Breakfast of Champions’ by Kurt Vonnegut. Can’t recommend it enough.

7) Favourite thing on TV?I saw a thing on BBC Four recently which was just a barge going down a river for about 4 hours. Best TV in a decade.

8) Are you afraid of anything? Erm, yeah. Loads of stuff. Notably Britain’s increasingly rapid descent into Orwellian dystopia.

9) Tell us something people don’t often know about you...I’m not very good with technology. Life is cruel, I have the geek look but not the skills.

10) What are you doing tomorrow?Resting! Just finished the first weekend of my new album tour, which was straight off the back of a European tour with The Mouse Outfit, so it’s time for some sleep.

1.) What have you learned today? That I’m pretty good with a pair of garden shears. Maybe in a different life I would be a landscape gardener or something. My hedge is looking immaculate.

2.) Favourite track of all time? That’s impossible to answer! But I do love ‘(Sittin’ On) The dock Of The Bay’ by Otis Redding.

3.) It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? The Hives ‘Tick Tick Boom’ or LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Daft Punk Is Playing At My House’. That’s until someone into Clean Bandit turns it off…

4.) Who are your top 3 acts right now?I’m really into a punk band from Stevenage called Bad Breeding, a local hardcore band called Seven Crowns and in terms of a live act, LA punks The Bronx always deliver.

5.) If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead?I have a day job so music doesn’t really pay my bills but if I couldn’t do music I’d probably be doing artwork for bands, gig posters etc.

6.) What was the last book you read? ‘Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage: A novel’ by Haruki Murakami

7.) Favourite thing on TV?Right now, This Is England ‘90 but I also love The Last Leg.

8.) Are you afraid of anything? The dark. Anyone who says they’re not is lying.

9.) Tell us something people don’t know about you... I collect old original Gameboy games, cool huh?

10.) What are you doing tomorrow? Well it’s Sunday night so I will be at work tomorrow and then in the evening I will try and write some new tunes, watch some TV and justify a beer or two by saying I earned it.

Dr Syntax and Pete Cannonrapper / PRODUCER

Dr Syntax and Pete Cannon are famous amongst the UK hip hop community for their collaborations, delivering the work of a humorous wordsmith over contagious beats in releases like Benny Huge, Killer Combo and brand new album, Elaborate Anoraks, released in September. As well as smashing it together, these guys are individually recognised as some of the most respected artists currently out there in their own right. Dr Syntax had a successful start to his music career with the instant-classic Self Taught EP and later became well known for performing with hip hop veterans, Foreign Beggars and remains a regular collaborator with The Mouse Outfit.Pete Cannon was practically born with a pair of headphones as an umbilical cord and has since become a talented producer across several genres. Not only has Pete worked with Dr Syntax, he has produced for a large number of artists like Stig of the Dump and Dirty Dike, being recognised as one of the top hip hop producers currently in the UK.The enigmatic pair will be touring their new album this autumn, so we caught up with Dr Sytanx ahead of their Bristol gig at The Attic Bar this month. Upcoming shows: 10 October, The Full Moon and Attic Bar

Ghost of the Avalanche Band

Ghost Of The Avalanche are a two-piece, noise-punk band from Bath.Built on a love of listening to 80s punk tapes and watching old horror films, bassist/vocalist Nick Wiltone and drummer/vocalist Miles Per-Hour formed their heartthrob duo with the purpose of stripping music back to it’s bones. The result is much like those old monochrome horror films, a slick, eerie aesthetic on the surface, with a beast below.Whilst drawing comparisons to bands such as Death From Above 1979 and The Bronx, the band themselves insist their influences lie in early 80s hardcore (Black Flag, The Misfits, The Ramones) and 50s pop (The Ronnettes, Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison). To-date the band has released three critically acclaimed EPs, 2013’s Hide The Truth, 2014’s Body Snatchers EP and on September the 18th of this year they released their follow up, the This Is Earth EP to rave reviews. The Bath-based noise makers will be supporting the release by touring the UK extensively throughout October including three dates supporting The Ordinary Boys.We caught up with bassist and vocalist Nick to ask those all important 10 questions…Upcoming Shows: 22nd October, The Fleece (supporting The Ordinary Boys)

INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT

IDLES

The Bristol based new wave band Idles hit the ground running in 2012 with their highly successful debut EP Welcome. Earning support from BBC Introducing in the Southwest, Idles went on to tour with their release earning nationwide respect. Band members Joe, Mark, Lee, Adam and Jon were praised by many for their first EP, but after a successful start, the band went on hiatus to focus on writing new music and to perfect their ‘violent, passionate, guttural and honest style’. A year and a half later, Idles have finally returned with their eagerly awaited release Meat, louder and heavier than ever.

Lead vocalist Joe Talbot met up with Nitelife feeling a little worse for wear after a hectic shift to talk about the bands success, the reason behind their year and a half absence and the anticipated EP Meat.

The self-described “heavy, aggressive, short sounding” band

has often been pigeonholed under post-punk, but really Idles sound developed from a variety of different genres when two friends just came together to jam. Idles band members Joe

and Adam were good friends before the band came into shape. “I started the band with Adam the bassist about six years ago now, and it started off with just us fucking around until we found other people to join. The next one to officially join was Mark the guitarist

who we met through DJing. Then Jon and Andy joined, but then Andy left so now we’ve got Lee. We thought we sounded alright at first, but we were absolutely awful really.”

It seems being friends with your band mates works to the advantage for Idles, especially when it comes to making music. Joe was quick to point out the advantages of performing with friends. “We’re all really brutally honest with each other and there’s definitely no fucking around. But because we’re so close, no one gets offended which is great because if someone

does something shit, we can turn around and tell them that”. The year and a half break probably did the band some good, giving them time to master this skill, as Joe continued to explain how this open way of communicating didn’t occur overnight. “It’s taken us a long time to get to this point, but we love each other so it’s all good.”

It’s not every day you hear of a bands debut EP attracting support from BBC Introducing, so Idles must be doing something right to achieve respectable backing for their debut 2012 release. Joe humbly downplayed the title though as he nursed his pint. “It was BBC Introducing West, so it was kind of local. I thought we were rubbish for a long time, but we had a lot of friends who were promotors, so our friends helped us out and were very supportive”. But even though the support was strong, Joe’s uncertainty sounded like he believed they didn’t quite deserve the attention they initially received. “In my opinion, we were getting an unfair buzz about us because we were getting good slots”. Whether Joe believed the support they received was justified, the hype surrounding Idles was still going strong, the group was rightfully labelled ‘Bristol’s next big band’.

Back in full force with a new EP, Idles are stronger, louder and more aggressive than ever

Page 29: Nitelife October 2015

LOCAL TALENT // 29

After such a fast paced start, the local band decided to take a step back from the stage to focus on writing new music. “We just wanted to get tight playing live and make a new album”. Much to Joe’s disapproval, the main reason for this decision was to take a break from playing live though. “It was fucking boring if I’m honest. Bowen is definitely all about recording new music and that is great, but I just want to get on stage and do live shows.”

Back in full force with a new EP, Idles are stronger, louder and more aggressive than ever. The sound of the new release is bragged to still share similar attributes to previous releases, but Meat dishes out a lot more juice. “It’s meatier than Welcome,” Joe laughs. “But fans can rest assured that they will still hear the same raw energy in the new EP. “It’s nice, it feels like we’re a new band again. Our sound has changed a lot, but you can tell it’s still us. We’re just a lot heavier. My lyrics have changed too. It’s a lot more honest and it’s a lot more brutal. We’re just getting heavier as we get older, I just think we’re becoming more like disgruntled old men. It sounds like we’re pissed off all the time!”

The Idles return to Bristol with their Meat EP launch party at The Louisiana this October, to celebrate the return of the new wave band and their long awaited release. After a year and a half of practicing over 12 hours each week to hone their sound and write new music, everyone knows this show is going to be unmissable. Many reviewers rave about Idles unforgettable live shows, but what makes this band so memorable is their live performances and electric presence on stage. Chatting with Joe, you could tell he was itching to get back on stage. “It’s the only thing I think I’m really good at. It’s therapeutic and an outlet, especially with the subject matters I focus on in my lyrics.”

But wherever they perform in the country, Idles can’t beat the home comforts of Bristol’s music scene. Joe started to talk about what differs between the Bristol music scene in comparison to other cities. “It feels like Bristol has a belligerence towards the rest of the world. It’s like we’re all in in a private joke that no one else gets. If you listen to a lot of Bristol bands like Spectres, they don’t sound like anyone else, or if you listen to The Naturals or St Pierre, they don’t sound like anyone else either. They are just belligerent in having fun. Everyone does their own thing musically and it’s like a belligerence to do what you want and to have fun. I think the reason why a lot of bands fail is because they have the perspective that if you don’t get big, then you’re failing. But really, if you can enjoy hanging out with your mates whilst doing something really awesome and something you love, then you’re winning.”

After what will undoubtedly be a great show at the Louisiana this October, be sure to grab the latest EP Meat due for release 30 October. What’s more, keep an ear out for a new album and a couple of remixes to follow.

TEACHINGS IN DUB X DEEP MEDI: MALA & STRYDA, 27 – 28 NOVEMBER

This November, two heavyweights from two different musical worlds will come together – a clash of the Titans – for a very special two part weekender, Teachings in Dub x Deep Medi.

Headed up by one half of Bristol reggae roots outfit Dubkasm, DJ Strydra’s Teachings in Dub events aim to educate fans of dub music about reggae soundsystem culture.

Earlier this year, the Bristol institution hosted Mala’s seminal dubstep label Deep Medi for an evening, which brought Mala, Pinch, Commodo, Kaiju, Kahn, Gantz and Compa together on the mighty RC1 soundsystem in the intimate setting of Trinity Centre.

Tickets sold out in half an hour and the night was such a resounding success, that Mala and Stryda decided they would follow up with a Teachings in Dub x Deep Medi weekender, with huge names representing both genres across a Friday and Saturday night.

“Lots of people didn’t manage to get tickets,” Stryda explains. “We didn’t want to change venue, because I do all my things at Trinity and we really love that venue. And we wanted people to see some of those bigger names in a more intimate environment.”

The November event will be more of a collaboration than the previous, which was more about showcasing true dubstep music on the soundsystem it deserves.

“In terms of the dubstep world and the Teachings in Dub world, both sides are going to be very well covered – it’s very, very exciting,” says Styrda.

This is about respecting music across the board

PREVIEW // 31

“This is not a dub-to-dubstep thing, but about respecting music across the board. The things that are coming out now on 140bpm, but also giving that respect and signal to original Jamaican soundsystem culture.”

The full line up will be released in October, but at the time of going to press Mala and Stryda revealed exclusively to Nitelife that Goth-Trad and Jah Shaka will feature on the line up, as well as Mala and Dubkasm themselves. With many more big names being kept under wraps until tickets go on sale.

Deep Medi label boss Mala is recogised as being at the very forefront of the dubstep movement, emerging in 2004 with fellow dubstep producer and longtime friend Coki as duo, Digital Mystikz.

“For us, this feels like a really special full circle in the sense of where my roots, and a lot of dubstep’s roots, lies in,” says Mala. “Obviously it’s not just about reggae or roots music, it’s more about a soundsystem mentality. We’re making music to be played on a soundsystem.

“I feel like what I’ve been doing over the last decade is in a mature place. I couldn’t have done this when I was 24/ 25 years old, but now with the experience I have and the artists I’ve worked with, it feels like the right time to connect reggae soundsystem music with the UK heritage - where we do cut dub plates and DJs have exclusives that only they have.

“It was my love for jungle music and growing up listening to pirate radio stations in the early and mid 90s that really gave me my musical education. Not just in terms of wanting to make music, but also the music scene’s social structure or make up. There was that thing where only certain DJs could get certain tunes off producers.

“I was very much like that, I only gave my music to people like Hatcha, Code 9, Youngsta and maybe only a couple of other people ever got music from me back then, and it’s still very much the same now.”

DJ Stryda started his career playing on pirate radio Ragga FM in the 90s. He’s since become a staple on the Bristol reggae and roots scene, establishing Teachings in Dub in 2007 with members from Bristol students’ Bristol Reggae Society, which operated as Room 2 of Pinch’s legendary Subloaded nights at Clockwork club on Stokes Croft.

“My first gig was when a guy from the station said, ‘Do you want to come and play some tunes at my uncle’s house next week?’

“His uncle’s place just happened to be the renowned ‘blues’ club, Ajax. I went down on Sunday and played roots music all night.

“It was an amazing place with a sliding door and you’d have to go down an alleyway to get there. You’d pay your quid to get in and it would go on until 7am.

“The first time I saw Mala was when dubstep had first really come about. Pinch asked me to come to one of his nights and it was Mala playing with Stg Pokes on the mic. Mala was playing acetate dub plates and it was minimal, instrumental music with sparse lyrics just thrown in every now and again from Pokes, and I just really felt it. You have to hear dubstep on a soundsystem to really connect with it and understand it, and I did that night.

“It was just great to see a whole new generation of people coming in and enjoying soundsystem dubplate culture with a unique UK twist to it, and I really embraced it from there.

“And I think Mala’s whole cutting of dubplates, keeping music exclusive for soundsystems, that whole approach is very in keeping with what we do with Dubkasm.”

There hasn’t been any weak years of music for dubstep, but there’s been really strange years from a media point of view

When dubstep first emerged in early 2000s, it was one of the first really new sounds to be heard in a long time - and probably since. Mala, Coki and a handful of others helped hone the sound to become the phenomenon it is today.

“There were people doing dubstep before DMZ got involved,” says Mala. “You had what Forward was doing. I feel that our involvement was further reducing the music, we took out the breaks and left an even more minimal, sparse beat. I always focused on my basslines to drive the tracks.”

As that heavy bassline took hold and the sound grew more and more popular, dubstep was jumped on from every angle and subsequently gained a bit of a bad rep, with even the likes of Britney Spears having a crack at it in her in 2011 track, ‘Hold it Against Me’.

“I didn’t hear that one,” Mala laughs. “But it’s kind of funny more than anything.

“When it comes to music, some people don’t care like that. They’ll happily pick up anything and they don’t care if they bastardise it, or water it down or clone it, or regurgitate it.

“And why should they care if they don’t care? I don’t judge or punish someone just because they decide to jump on a sound that’s trendy, it’s kind of what most of the world does, isn’t it?

“You hear it on adverts and stuff - you don’t hear a dubstep track, but you hear the groove, the pattern, the emphasis on the mid-range bass…

“I guess you can look at it in the way that what a small community of people did from a small underground place managed to have such a massive impact.

“I might be bias, but I don’t think there’s been any weak years of music for dubstep, but there’s been really strange years from a media point of view, and a hype and trend point of view. You just had to look deeper…

“And now all of the hype has gone, you can see it again because everything else has moved on.”

Tickets for Teachings in Dub x Deep Medi will go on sale in early October. Keep your eye on the Facebook event page for further information and line up announcements.

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENCES WITH

DAVE SMEATON

Dave SmeatonJob title: Bar owner and operator

thespottedcowbristol.com theloveinn.com the small horse inn thechristmassteps.com

Over the course of his career, Dave Smeaton has gone from centre stage (with Chic’s Nile Rogers dancing right beside him) to taking charge behind the scenes, turning his knowledge of the music industry into a career, delivering successful business after business.

Dave is director of Bedminster’s Spotted Cow, part owner of The Christmas Steps with Crack Magazine, director of The Love Inn, which he runs with promoter and events giants, Team Love; and he is also the director of Big Chill Bristol – which is due to reopen this October as brand new venue, The Small Horse Inn.

“I’ll still be involved,” says Dave. “But basically Team Love are going to be taking over The Big Chill and they’ve got big plans to turn it into something very new, very exciting, and very different. I can’t really say much more than that...

“They’re excellent promoters and event organisers – certainly one of the best out there at the moment – and they were interested in getting involved in the venue, so we thought it would be a good decision.

“After six years of Big Chill, it was time to move on and start a brand new venture.”

Dave began DJing in Bristol in the early 90s, as one half of the popular Rainy but Funky, a DJ project with friend Neil Kitsell.

Dave also become involved with Bristol trip hop label, Cup of Tea Records, playing guitar on several tracks released by Bristol band, Purple Penguin.

“I still DJ now, at a push. Back then I was DJing three or four times a week all around Europe and North America.

“My career highlight was probably DJing before Chic, and Nile Rogers coming and dancing with me behind the decks.

“Nowadays, I’ll do a handful of gigs a year. I always do the West Holts stage at Glastonbury because that’s a fantastic one. But after 20 years, I’m quite happy just doing the business side!”

Although today he sees himself as more of a businessman, it was Dave’s involvement in the music world that led him into bar managing.

“I had a clothes shop on Park Street called Alterior, and pre-internet shopping days, clothes shops were an important place for people to hang out, listen to music, and be around art.

“It was a real hub at the time, all the local musicians used to shop there, and Banksy was a regular.

“And from there, I got more involved in trying to do something around music in Bristol from a business perspective.

“With friends, I opened a club called Native, and it just kind of grew from there.”

10 years on and with four of Bristol’s most successful bars on his roster, Dave now takes more of a backseat in terms of DJ and live bookings, passing the torch to the “younger and fresher” faces, he explains, and focusing on the important business side of things.

I got more involved in trying to do something around music in Bristol from a business perspective

“I used to be involved in a lot more of the DJ bookings and creative stuff, but I’ve mostly passed that on with the Team Love guys and the Crack Magazine guys, who are really good at that and more involved in the scene now. I’ve got to give them credit for the success the bars have had musically.

“Running a bar is a lot more hard work than you imagine, but it can be really rewarding.

“An average day involves a lot of paperwork. I have to spend a lot of time on legal stuff!”

Dave jokes, “It’s all very dull, but it’s definitely more fun than your average 9-5.”
