Business bits/Sake brokkiesSouth Africa is facing a self-inflicted economic slowdown caused mainly by a strike in SA’s platinum mines, but a recession this year looks unlikely, central bank Governor Gill Marcus said on Tuesday. April manufacturing data re-leased on Tuesday backed her thinking. Output fell much less than expected. Marcus said the good thing about SA’s economic slowdown was that the solutions were within its control. The 2009 recession, by contrast, was largely caused by the global financial crisis. - Engineering News South Africa relies too heavily on personal income tax and on value added tax (VAT) in its overall tax mix. The tax system is “at full stretch”, and further demands will distort economic activity and the behaviour of taxpayers, Chris Evans, professor at the school of taxation and business law at the Australian School of Business warned this week. Only 338 724 of the nearly six-million registered taxpayers reported taxable income of more than R500,000 in 2012, but carried the largest burden of personal income tax. “You cannot squeeze more blood from this stone,” Prof Evans said at the annual TaxIndaba. - Business Day

- Landbouweekblad

The appointment of a permanent CEO for Eskom is at an advanced stage, Eskom chairman Zola Tsotsi said on Thursday. This follows the resignation of former executive Brian Dames, who left the company at the end of March. Collin Matjila had since been appointed as the acting CEO of Eskom. - SAnews.gov.za

Fraud on the rise in LephalaleThe Lephalale police have issued a warning this week that residents and especially job seekers should be on the lookout for fraudsters who solicit bribes in exchange for jobs. Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena told Northern News that incidents of this type of fraud are on the rise in Lephalale.

People, desperate for work pay an amount to secure a job just to find that there was no job in the first place and that the money is gone.

Mokoena urges the community to report incidents of fraud to the Lephalale police.

Mokoena has warned that family members of prisoners should not pay money to people claiming to be police of-ficers collecting bail money.

He said cases have been reported were the next of kin of a suspect were contacted by a unknown person to say that a certain amount needed to be paid to secure bail. The money was paid, and the person was never heard of again.

“We urge the community not to pay money to people claiming to be police officers.”

Vehicle owner soughtA vehicle that appears to have been involved in an acci-dent was found abandoned next to the road near Marken on Tuesday morning. The police are investigating and anyone with information is asked to contact the Villa Nora police station on 014 763 2432.

Funeral proceedings of a prominent Mokopane business-man, Malesela Frans Maphoto, became the latest battle field in the Mogalakwena power struggle when former mayor, Thlalefi Mashemaite, allegedly threatned to hijack the pulpit and ‘speak’ if the family allowed current mayor, Malose Mabuela, to address funeral goers on Sunday.

According to a press statement by the Mogalakwena municipality, a group of people led by Victor Mokosi wanted Mashamaite to replace Mabuela on the programme.

Kate Maphoto, the widow apologised to guests and the delegation from the municipality. “As you can see on the programme that item 09 we had mayor Mabuela to give the message of support. I was approached by the programme di-rector Mr Mpyatona who told me that there are people telling him that the Mogalakwena mayor is Tlhalefi Mashamaite not Mabuela.“I told Mpyatona that according to the latest devel-opment I know Mabuela is the mayor of Mogalakwena Mu-nicipality, they were here during the week and we didn’t see Mashamaite here. I told Mpyatona that the programme must continue as it is. He left and came back saying they told him

that if Mabuela is given a platform then Masha-maite will also speak and no one will prevent him,” Mrs Maphoto esplained. She chose to have neither speak at the occasion.

“We are disappoint-ed with this prulish be-havior of some council-lors and others who call themselves councilors,” Mabuela said after the proceedings.

This is the second time Mashemaite’s followers have un-dermined Mabuela as the elected mayor of the munici- pality. At a department of social development event on the 28 May Cllr Sam Montane instructed the programme director to remove Mabuela from the programme.

“Be vigilant”- Lephalale policeThe Social Crime Prevention unit of the Lephalale police conducted a door-to-door cam-paign this week to highlight the rise in ATM fraud and theft out of motor vehicles at busi-ness- and shopping centres in Lephalale. They warned the public to be on the lookout for suspects who loiter around shopping centres and in parking areas and to report any suspicious movements to the Lephalale police on 014 762 1000.

The people of Mogalakwena municipality will have to wait for a written judgement on the municipality’s appeal against a high court order that set aside the interdict preventing Dikgape Makobe from taking over as administrator of the municipality.

Dikgape Makobe was appointed by the depart-ment of cooperative governance, human settle-ments and traditional affairs (Coghsta) about a month ago to administer finance and other func-tions at the municipality, but was interdicted from entering the offices by the mayor, the municipal manager and council.

The department convinced the court to set the interdict aside, but the municipality immediately appealed.

- Adele Essakow

The SPCA in Mokopane is broke and in desperate need of financial aid, the association’s chairperson, Mar-celle Maritz told Mogalakwena mayor, Malose Mabuela when he visited the SPCA last Thursday.

Mabuela, the ANC chief whip, Phuti Pila and the speaker, Melba Mabusela, visited the SPCA upon Maritz’s invite. She is hoping the municipality would release funds allocated for the SPCA sooner than the scheduled re-lease date later this year.

“Right now we have peole who haven’t been paid salaries this month and we are running out of food for the animals we care for,” she said.

The SPCA no longer received funding from the national lotery and relies entirely on donations and fundrais-ing projects for its day-to-day expenses.

Higher water pressure the reason for burst pipesLEPHALALE - Several water pipes have burst in Onverwacht and Ellisras over the weekend leaving residents without water at certain times.

According to the strategic manager at the Lephalale municipality, Khoro-shi Motebele, water infrastructure and especially asbestos pipes in parts of Lephalale are old and not able to withstand the higher water pressure.

Water pressure has increased significantly since the new bulk water sup-ply came online earlier this year. “The current infrastructure is not able to withstand the higher water pressure and the asbestos pipes are bursting as a result. We have, however, taken the possibility of pipe bursts into account during the planning phase and have budgeted R3.5 million for the upgrading of water pipes. This will be available to us in the new financial year, which starts in July. We are currently in the process of appointing a consultant to do the job.”

The reservoir at Palala Street was partly flooded on Sunday due to a pipe that burst over the weekend.

Mogalakwena still in limboThe appeal was heard last Tuesday when judgement was

reserved. The judge indicated a written judgment would be delivered in due course but did not men-tion a date.

“What it means is that while still waiting for the judgment, the department or the MEC cannot interfere with the running of the municipality,” municipal spokesperson, Malesela Selokela told the media last week. According to the New Age the municipality claimed the department’s decision to place it under administration was irrelevant and aimed at shielding the fired mayor Thlalefi Mashamaite and six councillors sacked due to alleged misuse of public funds.

Earlier, the department denied the allegations insisting the action was aimed at bringing stability to the municipality which was threatened by internal conflicts.

Medupi: First power early 2015The Medupi power station in Lephalale is on track to add 800 megawatts (MW) to Eskom’s electricity capacity by early 2015 acting chief executive, Collin Matjila, said last Thursday. He gave his assurance that Eskom will have the first unit of its Medupi power plant (Unit 6) on track for synchronisation by December 2014 and operat-ing by the first quarter of 2015.

Newly appointed Minister of Public Enterprises, Lynne Brown, is also optimistic that Medupi will produce first power by early next year. “All the required qualification documentation and defective boiler welds have been quan-tified and repaired. The successful hydrostatic testing of the Medupi unit 6 boiler signals that the matters that had caused the delays have now been successfully resolved and the boiler is mechanically complete and ready for the commissioning process.

A Passing-out parade for the SAMHS (South African Military Health Service) January 2014 MSDS (military skills development) intake took place last Friday at the Mogol club sports grounds in Lephalale. The group completed their Basic Military Training this week. The parade which also honoured Col W.T. Nieuwoudt as outgoing Officer Com-manding at the Lephalale training centre consisted of a battalion in mass with the participation of dogs and horses. The SAM-HS Band also participated in the parade and was excellent as always.

Surgeon General of the SA national de-fence force, Lieutenant General A.P. Sedibe, congratulated the members on parade say-ing that they have come a long way, under difficult circumstances to become part of a

Daarom wil ek soveel daarvan moontlik geniet.”

King’s College learner excels in USA

Petro Barnard, a Grade 11 student and head girl of Kings College in Lephalale, recently travelled to America to compete on behalf of the South African team of Accele-rated Christian Schools.

The meet was held in Pennsylvania, where 2 565 students from all over the world competed against each other in more than 150 categories. Petro excelled, and came back with a silver medal for her science collection; she was also in the top fifteen for her scrap booking and animal photo. The South African team spent an unforget-table three weeks in America.

A week in New York and Washington DC; a week at the International Student Convention and a week at Disneyland. When asked if she would like to go again, she answers with a quick “When?”

A teacher at the school says about Petro: “She is not only an ambassador for Kings College, but also for our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ and we are very proud of the way she represented the school.”
