LEPHALALE - Robbers don't even bother coming through the windows - they use the font door. These are the words of a shocked resident after thieves forced open their front door to commit robbery.

The residents attended a function on Saturday evening and returned home at about 22:00. They awoke to dogs barking furiously at 01:00 but didn't see anything out of place as they checked the house.

The following morning, they noticed that the front door was ajar and had visible marks of forced entry.

A laptop, a handbag and wallet with cash was missing. The robbery was reported to the Lephalale police.

According to the residents no finger prints were found by po-lice.

“We are absolutely traumatised and don’t feel safe anymore,” the woman said.

No arrests have been made.

Police hunt cop killersPOLOKWANE – Police in Limpopo are look-ing for two unknown suspects responsible for the killing of a 44-year-old warrant of-ficer who was attached to Crime Prevention at the Bolobedu Police Station.

The incident took place around 19:00 on Sunday evening at Ga-Matipane village in the Bolobedu area, when warrant officer God-frey Mantlhake (44) and his girlfriend were standing next to his vehicle in the street.

Two unknown men approached them and pulled out fire-arms. Warrant Officer Mantl-hake was shot three times in the head and chest before the suspects fled. The motive for the attack is not known.

An appeal is made to anybody who might have witnessed the attack, or anyone who might have more information on the suspects to provide it to the investigating officer, Major Shingange at 078 531 8184 or 082 469 2625.

LEPHALALE - The EFF has responded to the recent unrest at the Lephalale TVET Col-lege by stating that the college is the only professional educational institution in the town and shouldn't be allowed to fail due to poor management.

"Having an illegal strike at the Lephalale TVET College during a time when everyone is saying that people of Lephalale are not educated can't be tolerated when properties are being vandalised and damaged," says Jan Sello Moselane, who identifies himself as the EFF task team leader.

"We are of the view as EFF that there is no one who can embark on strike without reason," he states. "We have given much at-tention to the cause of the strike and are say-ing the management of the Lephalale TVET College are the ones who must account for what is happening within the institution."

The EFF task team demand that the TVET College management explain why the students claim that they have paid tuition for subjects for which there will not be adequate lecturers?

"We can't be happy seeing students, the future of tomorrow, being prosecuted be-cause they have been provoked," he said.

LEPHALALE - Police reports confirm that a man apparently died in a car accident in which the Lephalale Mayor, Jack Maeko, was also involved.

The accident took place last Saturday in Nelson Mandela drive.

Warrant officer Frans Makoena of the Lephalale police reports that Maeko was driving the one vehicle when it collided with the other.

The Lephalale Municipality confirmed the incident and that Maeko sustained minor in-juries. The man in the other vehicle died.

"At the time of the accident he (Maeko) was driving a private vehicle in his private capacity," the municipality's communication officer, Valerie Cilliers, said and declined to comment further except for wishing the Mayor a speedy recovery.

Police confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

"We are sick and tired of our government when it comes to protests. The [using] of rub-ber bullets [to our fellow people in SA] is not supposed to be tolerated," he says. "There must be other means of resolving the issues of striking people rather than using rubber bullets and arresting people."

No official statement has been made by the Lephalale TVET College with regards to the strikes despite assurances to the contrary made in February.

Environmental go ahead for ThabametsiLEPHALALE - The department of environ-mental affairs has granted environmental authorisation for the establishment of Exxa-ro Resources' planned 1200MW coal-fired Thabametsi power station, 26km north-west of Lephalale.

The Thabametsi power station will in-clude access roads, coal storage areas and bunkers, a pipeline for water supply, coal loading and off loading areas and conveyor belts, power plant production units, ash dumps, wastewater treatment facilities, a high-voltage yard, overhead power lines to connect into the Eskom grid and office and maintenance areas.

In 2014, Exxaro reported that it planned to invest R16.1 billion in growth capital investment at its Grootegeluk mine near Lep-halale. The plan includes the development of the new Thabametsi open-pit coal mine and beneficiation complex. Transnet also indicat-ed that it aims to improve rail volumes on its line from the Waterberg to 27mtpa from the current 2mtpa at a cost of some R5-billion and is reportedly targeted to be in use by 2016-2017. Previous reports from Transnet indicate that the new Liné will run from Lep-halale, Thabazimbi through to Mpumalanga.

Elna glo die regte behandeling by laas-genoemde hospitaal het haar man se lewe gered.

Conrad herstel wonderbaarlik

LEPHALALE - The residents of Krulblaar and Kameeldoring streets in Onverwacht in are unhappy after the municipality repaired a water pipe, but failed to close up the hole.

Residents feel that the open hole is a safety hazard and informed the municipality that it has not been filled.

LEPHALALE - Various of the employees at Lephalale Municipality went on a ‘go slow’ when they had to work without Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for almost two months . Employees gathered on the grass in front of the municipality daily last week. “We are not on strike, we are just not working. When people strike they are violent, we are not violent,” said one of the employees. According to SAWU's Peter Thulare the union negotiated with the municipality to hand out new PPE on Monday. Services were up and running by Monday afternoon and some of the waste removal vehicles was seen working overtime to clean up all the domestic waste in the residential areas.

A new tomato pest called “Tuta absoluta or Tomato Leaf Miner (TLM)” has been promi-nent in the news since 2006 as it emerged in Europe where it caused serious damage to host crops.

The pest was detected in Sudan in 2010 and the invasion has subsequently crossed the Sahara desert, being found in Kenya in 2014. The most recent records are from Tan-zania (unconfirmed) in August 2014. There are no records of this pest occurring in SA. The main concern is that it can cause serious yield losses of 50 to 100% and it can rapidly develop resistance to pesticides.

Tomato plants are the main host but other plants in the family Solanaceae, such as egg-plant, peppers, potatoes and several weeds, are also attacked. The larvae (worms) of this minute moth pest tunnel inside leaves and may also enter the fruit. This damage causes leaves to dry up and die and fruit such as to-matoes to become unmarketable.

The pest spreads on seedlings as well as fruit. Considering its rate of spread in Africa, this pest may be detected in South Africa in less than a year’s time. Prevention, early detection and rapid response will entail a coordinated approach between DAFF, Provin-cial Departments of Agriculture (PDAs) and

Pest Alert: Tuta absoluta (Tomato Leaf Miner)industry to ensure growers are protected as much as possible from this pest.

The National Plant Protection Organisa-tion of South Africa (NPPOZA) within DAFF is developing an early warnings system (EWS) for this pest in collaboration with the Tomato Producers Organisation, PDAs, Potato South Africa and the Potato Certification Scheme. This is in line with the South African Emer-gency Plant Pest Response Plan (SAEPPRP).

More role players will be approached in the development of the EWS to ensure all relevant organs of state, as well as research organisations, agricultural chemical manufac-turers and suppliers, commercial, small scale and subsistence producers are included.

Considering the high volumes of tomato production in the northern parts of our coun-try, this pest must be taken seriously, since tomatoes are a staple crop for small scale farmers, and contribute immensely to job creation and economic growth and most im-portantly, are a main ingredient in at least one food source for the majority of South Africans every day (either fresh or processed).

Please contact DAFF in case of suspicious looking symptoms on tomato or potato leaves or tomato fruit. For technical information call Jan Hendrik Venter on 012 319 6384.

Ever arrived at a dam, looked at it and wondered, “Where on earth am I going to start fishing?” The easiest would be to just start fishing right there at the launch ramp and methodically work your way around the shoreline, but this is not necessarily the most productive way to tackle a bass dam.

Most experienced and successful bass anglers know that catching bass is all about location, location, and location. You need to locate the habitat that will hold bass. You do not need to waste your time fishing the whole dam to catch a few fish. Identify the productive 10% and increase your odds of catching bass consistently.

As the seasons change bass will relocate but they will never move far away from their home base. The basic requirements for a bass’s survival are food, oxygen and cover. Find all three elements in abundance and you are guaranteed to find bass.

FoodFood could consist of baitfish, insects,

crustaceans and occasionally reptiles, mam-mals and birds. The key is to look for areas with a high concentration of food, especially baitfish. A rocky bank may be home to a horde of crabs and other aquatic insects.

CoverBass use cover as a place to feel secure

and ambush their prey. However, bass do not exclusively use cover to feed. They will hunt and chase down prey when the oppor-tunity presents itself.

Fishing with Christie

Where to find bassWood

In fishing terms, wood may mean the fol-lowing:

Standing timber and fallen trees, totally or partially submerged.

Stumps. Brush. Logs and logjams, floating or sunken. Man-made wood structure, including

fence rows, docks and pilings. Wood is one of the best places to look for

bass but not all wood will hold bass. One of the secrets to successful bass fishing is to believe in the following statement “OUT OF PLACE IS THE PLACE!!” Look for anything different in any given scenario...one piece of driftwood wedged amongst a patch of weed, or...one dead knoppiesdoring amongst a for-est of flooded leadwood, or...a small stand of flooded stumps along a rocky bank.

WeedMany bass fishermen consider weed

to be the ultimate cover for bass. This is because most aquatic vegetation produces oxygen and plays host to a multitude of life forms which potentially feed bass.

Weed is classed as any form of aquatic plantlife and may include the following:

Hydrilla. Lily pads. Watch for movement. Spooked

bass will zigzag through the pads. Be patient and wait a minute or two. The bass usually come back.

Floating weeds such as hyacinths. Emergent grasses. Subsurface grasses (milfoil, hydrilla and

coontail) Green mosses.

Reeds Look for nice green healthy

growing plants. Brown, slimy looking plants may be dying and not ideal habitat for living organ-isms.

RockRock on its own is not as at-

tractive as weed or wood as it does not produce oxygen or af-ford bass the opportunity to hide deep within the cover. However, it does trap food and create ideal habitat amongst the gaps and cracks between the rocks, which in turn attracts smaller bait fish and other living organisms. Find the food and you will find bass.

Look for change in structure amongst the rock - a transition between small pea gravel to larger chunky rock, or a rock pile on the edge of a drop-off, amongst weed or standing timber.

If you can find a combination of all of the above (food/wood/rock/weed), you may just have found that proverbial ‘Honey Hole’ that everybody always hopes to find.
